Played a bit today. No footage.

• Started the session concentrating on my strong-side hippy atomic. Hit a dozen or so legbeaters out of my strong paradox mirage

• Practiced the combo of deep, weak clipper, deep ducking clipper, weak paradox mirage, weak legbeater. Hit close to or around 10, on the high estimate, but the form is getting much better

• Hit some weak sided drifters, including a nice string that also had far buttefly swirl in it. Oh well. No footage. Forgot to hit the record button.

• Ended the session with practicing my weak spinning clipper. I made some major breakthroughs, and I ended up actually hitting it into my strong-side drifter.

• Hit ducking butterfly x5, second try and they felt pretty decent.

Hey Ian, I just thought I'd post to say I really liked the run at about 2:20 in your most recent video. I have a lot of work to do on my drifters... I definitely couldn't hit one out of my flip spinning clipper. Keep it up!

Hey- thank you for your encouragement :)

25 minute session today before sundown. I really haven't been working on either my cardio or endurance, but I have been going on plenty of walks to rehab my bad knee and schooling isolated concepts.

Here are some highlights from tonight's impromptu session, after a huuuuuge pita...

• Drifter flip first try of session
• Drifter bsos
• Paradox barrage bs (first try of session, left side)
• Flip rip out of ducking clipper-whirl (first try of session-footed, sealed second try)
• Ripstein from clipper, first try of session

Wooo! This is a new side to Ian that I haven't seen! Hitting DLOs and stringing out of Drifter and hitting Pdx Drifter?! Great dude! Watched all the videos... Damn man! You've really improved since your MFA. Keep it up man. Looking awesome!

Thank you for the kind words, Nick! I already miss kicking with you guys.

Today I had the luxury of kicking for a few minutes, in-between scattered drops of rain.

Since I knew that the session was going to be brief, and since I knew that my knee was still recovering from last week, I had to be careful to use my limited time carefully and well.

I hit, perhaps my best paradox torque to hand grab ever, and on my first try. I would have to say that Pipebomb gives advice, at least to me, like to nobody else.

I followed this up with two separate strings where I hit the strongest mid-string legbeaters I have ever hit. A lot of this has to do with the time, thought, effort, and P-Bomb help, but ultimately, it's the stairs in my new digs.

I discovered that my knees are screwy from bad clippers- one's where I am clearly not coming down enough with the bag. So, despite my injury I tried a couple, and low-and-behold, I was nailing my flip simple swirls out of them. This led to a string where I concentrated on my form and successfully stalled/held onto the flip-side simple swirl, followed by one one the other side.

Anyway, it was short but it was certainly sweet. Can't wait to get over my injury and find more time to play.

I was going to give you props on the pdx torque, but realized I should give you more props for working on improving your clippers. We've both been playing for a long time, but every now and then it hits me that its never too late to refine your basics. I try and do this periodically myself. So props on working on something that will pay off greatly (as you already see with your flip symp swirls) in the long run, as opposed to immediate gratification.

I'm excited for your game now that you are done with school. When I finished grad school, I had so much more time to enjoy footbag, you can't help but get better.

Thanks a lot Ken. I had a short-but-major session today and your encouragement helped frame my focus. Big-ups!

• Mid-string leg is still nice on my right side

• My strong clipper with a persistent cushion of the delay led to the best swirls and steps that I have yet to hit- real-flowy, making it clear that I have to recover my right knee and practice the same way on the other side.

• Spinning osis bsos. Hit weak side first try.

• Footed paradox torque bsos. Hit the move several times. Sealed it only a a couple times. Actually really stuck the delay once.

• Some good strings with some of my best form yet, ending in hand-grabs!

• Insanely close to swifter

• At least one very good swirl on my weak side, thanks to a more controlled, held delay

This is how I feel too. I don't know your game or history that well, but I've been following your videos for a while and feel that if you really want to progress the best thing for your game would be to take a step back to tiltless shred. You'll have opportunities for much more variety in your game too this way and longer runs, which are some of the most satisfying things, I find, in hack. Pushing for spinning osis BSOS is super fun, but will be so much easier and more efficient if you can first master osis and, before that, clipper. At the very least, spend half of your session working on your basics and the other half going for hard stuff that you really want. I've had to realize this the hard way so many times over, as I lose so much progression and skill every time I'm injured (which has been pretty much an annual occasion!) The best way for me to reclaim my ability is to start from the ground up. Sometimes I want to blow past it because I know I'm better than what I'm doing, but that never really works and ends in more frustration because the basics aren't just a starting point, they're the foundation that has to be maintained throughout the entire development. I usually start every session with, like, 15-20 minutes of kicking and tiltless.

Hi Eric (sp?),

Thanks- this is good advice. I had to take some time off because I was drilling tiltless and holding my clippers too hard the week you posted this. Now I am back and easing in. Trying not to aggravate things.

Here's a video from yesterday. I like the 15 or so eclipses and the personal record (31) of b2b legovers first try. I will try to post from today's session later tonight. Peace.

Oh yeah- the original track was a beastie boys song but youtube ate it...

I have been playing a bunch despite the extremely humid weather.
Here are some of my recent highlights as a record, for my memory:

• I have improved my clipper, in that I come down with it more now and stop it more in the manner that I do my consecutive clippers. This has led to the ability to do a manner of other things: drifter out of butterfly, more consistsent spins (especially out of ducking clippers), major progress in swirls, simple swirls and dynos.

• I have been working on this drill where I start with weak-hippy-atomic out of PM and then try to bsos it. I am actually learning the first part now, have hit the drill, am learning to hold my weak toe stall out of PM longer, and have made considerable progress on my strong side atomic.

• Torques are so much more effortless- now I just need to clean up the form and learn how to stick them longer. It blows my mind to finally be able to pull out the occasional Paradox Torque on either side. This is a huge milestone for me and it is reflective of am organized and focused mindset in general.

• Hit 16 consecutive eclipses multiple times now. Seems like push-ups, in that I have a consistent cap before I lose my form and get frustrated.

What's your overall eclipse record?

And glad to hear the flip clipper practice is paying dividends. Do you play with anybody these days?

See you at East Coasts in NYC?

Hey Ken,

My Eclipse record is 16, I believe. I think I can break this now, because I have been working on my form recently (tighter, more concise, tiny sets), as a result of the weather being too humid to string long. However, I am probably going to wait for this heat to break before I try to work on stamina. Also, since I am rehabilitating my dumb-right-knee, and showing so much progress on creating small goals and concentrating on form I may just stick with the current session-model for a bit. What's your record? 25? I plan on crushing that sometime in the near future ;)

The flip clipper business is huge, but it's not just the flip... I really have a problem that I need to work up to resolving, both physically and mentally. I had a few lengthy strings where I practiced some painfully boring BOP drills with remarkably crisper form, but my video recording capabilities suck at the moment :( . Anyway, I am more proud of this than just about anything, but I need to work on my form and weight so that this all feels natural. It's not there. 180lbs is my average weight and I think I need to be closer to 175 or even 170, or at least let my muscles/body work up to the new level of stress and precision that I expect from it.

I am not kicking with anyone at the moment. I live 4-5 blocks from Friendship park which is amazing. I work on professional development, etc during the day and cool off afterwards. It's a good model for now but I need more income and I long to establish a permanent presence in NYC where my girlfriend and NYFA reside. In the meantime, I have access to free living and studio space that a NYC artist could only dream of, so I am making the best of the current situation.

I will do my very best to be at East Coasts. In the meantime, my career, girlfriend, and our families are my priority, but I am working towards being in a position where I have more opportunities to travel, shred and hang.

Proud of my session yesterday:

• PM-Hippy legbeater BSOS, with other good stuff in the string
• Paradox barrage (first try)
• Torque-wauxspin (first or second try- I forget)
• Some other decent strings

Took the night off to let my body recover a bit. Lower left hip/back area is sore. Maybe it's from deeper clippers. I am not sure, but playing just about every day for a week can't help that much.

Still playing just about every day, though I did take two days off because of lower back pain. I believe that it is attributable to paradox torques, so I am going to back off from those for a bit.

On Friday the weather final started to break. It felt like it might shower, so I left my laptop in my bag. The storm was advertising itself but it never quite materialized. As a result, I played to my body, my natural pace and form- not the field of vision laptop, nor the battery life. I enjoyed the storm and concentrated on maintaining good physical conditioning (knee has been bothering me too) and emphasizing the taking of weight on my support leg/knee, as well as cushioning/holding delays longer. It was a huge improvement. As a result, the next vid is not quite as cool string-wise, but it demonstrates massive improvement of form.

Not sure of what that link used to be in the last post. What I do know is that those lower back pains turned out to be a very big deal after all. It has been about 6 months now that my back has been really messed up. I haven't played the sport more than a few times. Even bop seems to hurt. I have lost so much muscle and stamina. I feel gross. Tomorrow I am going to try to get back into the sport. I will ease my way back in. Ducking clippers, spinning clippers, and tiltless. Hope it goes well. About two or three weeks ago I randomly decided to hit 1500+ consecutive kicks (first try). That was nice. Then a few days later I tried week drifter on my weak and injured side. Got it first try. I think my back has been hurting me because of bad clipper form and repetition on that side, contributing to many flaws in my game and the injury. I am hoping that I will get the chance to make these corrections to my form and strengthen back up without having to retire indefinitely from the sport. In the meantime, I'm going back to the books and trying to wrap my mind around classes/arrays in Java/Processing. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

I can commiserate with the back pains. Mine is back to getting good now. Last march, december, and last month or two, my back has been jacked. For me I think it's because lack of playing. Lower left back. It's been better now that I've been playing once a week, and doing some exercises with it.

That sounds exactly like what I am experiencing. A pain in my lower back that seems to make it hard for me to play but at the same time, feels better when I do, with restraint. Going to force myself to play and get back into being active. Starting now.
