Yes, it was a question (hence the question mark :D). It's worded weird though. Still a question.

butterfly CAN be symposium.
symposium butterfly does NOT get a body add for the symposium.

Okay so it is a Symposium Butterfly but with no symposium add. Thanks for clearing that up. I apologize for straying off topic.

adds

Post by Senor Grommet »

See, now the symposium butterfly add question is up for debate. . .

Which is easier?
1) ripwalk
2) stepping op symp. butterfly

I think 2 is harder.

what about:
1) sidewalk
2) stepping ss symp. butt

or:
1)legbeater
2)atomic symp. butterfly

In each case, I would argue that the symp. of the butterfly makes the move a great deal harder to execute, warranting an additional add. However the butterfly would have to be executed cleanly without pulling the bag thru, you know? Many people prolly dont feel the same way as I do, and may even think it is add hunting, but maybe symp. buttterfly is just one of the easier symposium tricks to perform. Not all symp tricks are of the same difficulty you know (symp torque vs. symp dlo). And just because 1 trick may be easier to perform than another, does that mean that the easier trick deserves to have its number of adds lessened?

example: ripwalk and clip set flux are two 4 add moves. Ripwalk is comparatively easier than flux. Does that mean that since ripwalk is easier than flux that it should be only a 3 add move? No, because ripwalk, according to the add system, fulfills 4 different add components, and thus is deserving of 4 adds.

Similarly, although symp butterfly is an easy 4 for some of us, is still fulfills 4 different add components, a thus deserves 4 adds unless performed in a manner which warrants less adds (wrapped behind the support leg).

What do you think about these arguments Chan? Johnny? Everyone?

It is always said that the Job's Notation is not a measure of difficulty. So let it be like that. If Symp. Butterfly was turned into a 4 add, then people would complain about it not being worth that many adds and end up calling people add-hunters. But they are forgetting that Job's Notation is not a measure of difficulty and it shouldn't matter if it feels like a 4 adds or not.

Job's was created to divide moves into different components, and I say if a Butterfly is Symposium then it should get a symposium add, it's as simple as that.

Thus : Symposium Butterfly - 4 adds. But to believe that statement you must accept that the Adds system will NEVER represent dificulty accurately.

People too often try to manipulate the Add system to try and make it measure difficulty (PDX, X-DEX). I repeat: the add system will NEVER accurately measure difficulty, don't try and make it. If you do... then there are debates. Paradox debates are all to common, and all because of people trying to change the add system. Leave dificulty and adds to be two separate entities. They are two different things entirely.

Well I don't know if that made ANY sense, and I did repeat the words measure difficulty alot... oh well.. I think I got what I wanted to say down. All I do know for sure is a Symposium Butterfly is 4 adds and that difficulty and the adds system aren't compatible.

If it should be 4 adds, then why not make it be 4 adds? Like what is holding us back?

Only in Mirkenland. :)

I agree some people can do it cleanly. Not many DO though. Also, it's barely harder than butterfly. Not even a full dexterity. Bah humbuh.

Since the add system was created to try to guage the difficulty of moves, then I think that it should continue to be modified to more accurately represent difficulty, but it'll never be perfect.
I just hit my first 5-add this weekend. It was a zoid diving butterfly. I haven't hit a 6 yet.

Yesss! Finally I can post in this thread.
First five - Pixie Ducking Butterfly.
Hit it twice on Sunday (first time no one was around to see it, so I was pissed), hit it even better the second time when everyone was watching.

I've had to access a crappy public access computer just to post this... That's how stoked I am. :D
