The learning curve is very steep and because of this many prospective players give up very early.
This is a great problem with our sport, and particularly the idea of attracting new players. I'm not sure if it is because the new people are expecting to be guiltless straight away, or because the teacher is too impatient to wait for the new player to get to their level.

It's great more and more people are doing footbag projects within the university sphere. It is a good opportunity to try out some different projects, in a perfect "testing" environment.

In terms of the content - I think in the basic kicks area, you should talk about after first learning the kicks, you should learn how to link all the different types of kicks together. Then in the intermediate, talk about linking any tricks together - you have a bit of this in there already.

What is the idea of the assignment - I'm guessing it's about cataloging the info, so the beginner, intermediate etc stuff is all in the right place, and then the other things around that?

Thanks for the feedback!
Yeah, I'm going to talk about linking beginner and intermediate tricks. I didn't think about kicks though, so thanks! I won't make a new video, but I'll definitely write about it :) Any further feedback would be awesome.

The site isn't graded on cataloguing. It's purely web design, so almost half of the grade is going to be based on accessibility, while most of the rest will be on usability. So things like ensuring that it will load reasonably quickly even for a 56k modem, or that all navigation and content can be understood without pictures or videos, or if a user is blind and has to have the computer read the site to him/her.

Good session today. Got kicked out of our booked squash court though for not playing squash. No more gym for us. Frustrating. Where do other university clubs play during winter? Student Services Building after hours?

Bedwetters and wetdreams are solid. Maybe as good as fogs and hazes now.
Got fog > rev reactor > blurry whip > fog > atomic miss first try. Should be able to drill that in a few tries.
Did 20 rotations of osis > pdx mirage > near butt [repeat], so 120 contacts, to blurriest
Did 55 osii, trying to get 100 like Allan.
Bed > diving symp mirage BSOS
Dunno. Still not much runnage. Was getting right into a good vibe as we were kicked out. Sucky.

Apartment hunting is kicking my ass.
So stressful.

Terrible session today. We got kicked out of the track. We weren't even ON the track. We were next to it. It was a new low for footbag criticism though. The guy was super disrespectful: "There are people running here. Take your toy somewhere else!" It just filled me with negativity. The guy was so ignorant and spiteful.

The funnest part of the session was making fun of him. We had a master plan to draw dicks in the dirt on his car, since Zach and his sister somehow knew which car was his in the parking lot! He had a mullet and we decided that it would be brilliant to cover his car in dick mullets. It turned out that his car wasn't dirty enough to be drawn on though :(

So that's all of our gym options exhausted.
We were relegated to a random hallway in Alex's building.
Frustrating and unproductive session for all, I think.
I ran the camera, but I don't think any of us had more than a single run worth watching back...
The one run I had, I don't even remember what was in there, but I had a combo that I did later into the run and later BSOSed: alpine merkon > near DLO > far symp whip > ripwalk; it just felt kinda neat and different, and nice since I hadn't planned it out before doing the run, which is something I always get stuck in.

We have a rather large university so our case may be different than yours. We usually kick in squash courts but if those fill up we move to the racquetball courts located right above them. There are also 4 gyms at PSU where people just play pickup basketball and they don't mind if we kick on the sidelines. I have also kicked in the basement of a residence hall, a commons building, a classroom, a large auditorium, and the basement of our apartment.

In terms of getting kicked out... it's never fun - when we kick at PSU, people don't usually bother us because of the number of facilities available for use, and because we are a registered club and have the same rights to use the facilities as the others. People are generally appreciative of us and sometimes watch our sessions from the side. However, when we are on break and go home, indoor shred space becomes a problem. Still searching for a nice place to kick over winter break.

Thanks for the reply, Ivan. Yeah, we have a bunch of gyms in ours too and we were only kicked out of the gyms once, but the problem is we're not allowed to video there either, and music would distract the intramurals in adjacent gyms, so that was never ideal. It was really hot in there for some reason too. Anyway. Fuck Western. Seriously. I have one paper due Tuesday and then I have mastered the informations, you guys. Fuck this place.

We filmed an outdoor session yesterday. Really fun, but got cold fast. My best run of the night wasn't recorded though 'cause we didn't notice my battery died before I was able to plug in my PowerMonkey (that's what she said). It had lots of spinning ducking tricks and a double spinning clipper > spinning whip midstring somewhere... Oh well.

I was watching some of my older videos for some reason. I still think that 2009 was my strongest year so far. Hopefully I can get even better now that I'm done school and am not suffering any injuries. Maybe once winter ends and I can frikken play every day and actually practice stuff! That was such a good spring for shred. I could feel it. I was consistent and playing strong, hard, and injury-free.
I want it back!

Hey Luis. Great to hear from you :)
I think this is the video you're remembering?

I'm glad you liked the DVD. Which one do you mean though? I think I mean 2? The Voyage of the Dawn Shredder one and the Decade of Erik Chan one? I don't have either on disc right now, but maybe I could send you the ISO or something. I dunno. Also, I think 90% of the players in this video don't play anymore :(

Oh, you must mean this one?
http://www.footbag.org/gallery/show/12621

ISO is a virtual DVD format. So with the right software you can run the virtual DVD on your computer without needing the physical disc, and it will have all of the menus and content and everything just like the physical copy. It would be, like, almost 5 gigs or something, though, so I'm not sure of the best way to send something like that.

Haha, oh yeah. That was from the same sessions as this Andrew Grant video I made too. I think they both hit their first beasts here? Maybe Andrew had done the same combo before off camera? I don't remember. First on video though, if I remember.

Oh yeah, and my part. Which is significantly less DEXlicious.
I think this was when I was first starting to play again after my first major injury, taking a year-ish off? This is when I started to spin and duck a lot more.

Had a really fun day today. A 2-3 hour session with FAT (Cassy, Alex, Jorden, Camille, and Adam surprise appearance). Played pretty poorly with crappy runs, but still had a lot of fun, and it felt like a good session all around if just for the fact that we had enough for 2 circles for most of the time. Jorden seemed pretty on for not having played in 6 months. He said that he only "forgot 2 sets," I guess meaning that otherwise he was pretty satisfied with his level of play. Typical Jorden fare -- always mixed up. Adam is only getting better and better -- he makes hack look EASY. He floats around the bag and triple dexes like nothing. Consistently long runs too, and very dense. Alex was playing pretty well -- one run with stepping BSOS (flip may have even been mid-run?). I didn't play with Cassy much, and I'm not too familiar with Camille's game to gauge anything.

The one downside of FAT sessions is that often people just go their separate ways immediately after. Probably the main reason I was able to convince Jorden to come down was because I offered to play-test his board game prototype (and 'cause Cassy funded his trip by buying a set of juggling/footbag balls). But only Cassy and I hung around after to play and Cassy intended to leave shortly after a brief run-through. She ended up staying longer than I think she intended, but it was fun to play the game with her while Jorden watched our blind playthrough. Cassy prolly stayed for about an hour or maybe even more. But afterward I had a couple more playthroughs with Jorden and then we walked to my favourite board game cafe a km or so away where we played a few titles from his preferred game category (abstract strategy). I think I won every one. And also beat him both times at his own game :P He seemed to really value our input, which is cool. And I look forward to hearing about its further development.

It was a nice 11-hour day spent with footbaggers :)
Oh yeah, some highlights of mine:
-blurrier > rev mullet BSOS (first try)
-rev reactor > stepping whip BSOS
-footed double spinning clipper > spinning whip BSOS (first try?)
-pretty close to spinning rev whirlwind a couple times

EDIT: Oh yeah, also started a run with flip rev hatchet with a little bit of an intention of BSOSing, but a few tricks later ended up hitting the rev tomahawk > rev hatchet drill midstring :) I've maybe done it one or two times before and never midstring, especially with another flip rev hatchet in the same run :)

Had a really fun duo session at Tom's house today. It was really fun without any pressure. It was neat to just chill and stuff too. I think it was the first time we ever hung out just the two of us. I got to check out his Mosher Originals workshop, his bag collection, and stuff like that. And he had a drawing that I made him, like, a decade ago on his wall :D That was super cool and made me happy.

We filmed a bit in the vein of "Old and Rusty: Part 2" since his last session was also a duo with a Hackrificer. I felt like I had a bit more energy than him and wanted to keep playing, but it was nice to just hang out too. We tried a little football -- I hit ATW BSOS :p The second half of our session was pretty much drilling, which was really fun to do non-solo! We chose concepts and would try to 1-up each other with contacts. I broke my barfly record with 7 (he thought I hit 8?) My previous record was 6, I think. And his record is 10, so I wanna aim to beat that :p We also played this bail tricks game where you take turns adding a trick to a string and you both have to hit the same tricks and then add one on each time, and always switching sides. It was mostly tiltless but we were so bad at it. Hahaha. Really fun and great practice though.

And then I hit a new trick both sides to end the session :)
Bullwhip both sides
(colour BB code isn't working?...)

We're hoping to make this weekly, which would be super cool if there's a weekly FAT session going on as well and if I can throw in a solo. I really want to get back into shape. But the little training that we did made me remember that it's difficult for me to school -- my body is just so fragile. I can't do a lot of repitition. It hurts :( I also got to meet Ruby and baby Hella Mosher for the first time. Great day.

Likewise, Cassy!

Had a productive solo today. Second session in my new place. Hit some new things and some other not new things that I was still happy with. Making a video right now with a track I've been dying to put to a video for a while. New stuff:
-blaze > pixie whip [repeat] (like second try?)
-blazing barfly (kind of accidentally on flip, but I'm pretty sure the double down was completely the... I guess we'll see soon)
-nova > symp whip > far symp whip [repeat] (for some reason was pretty easy...)

also kept having pdx egg> symp whip > bubbabeater > symp whip [repeat] fall off my foot on the LAST contact... frustrating, but I guess that really schooled my clipper-set eggbeaters. I hit the drill eventually I think.
-blur > rev reactor > blurriest [repeat] (not new, but maybe first time on camera?)

I don't remember what else. I tried pixie whipping swirl both sides, but I don't have the timing quite down yet. I've always struggled with pixie paradons a bit, so that's something I'll have to work on I guess. The blurry version is so much easier -- it's got the right momentum.

For pixie whirling swirl, the secret is turning your hips DURING the pixie set. For whipping swirl I'd imagine its the same, though you can probably get away with less of a rotation.
