Big day yesterday; got a huge paper and presentation (both part of a group project, which are always even more stressful) done, and I feel they both went well. Definitely a big load of stress off of me. I celebrated by going to a friend's house, having a bottle of Hennepin by myself, and bowling my 2 best Wii scores ever: 247 and 237! :) I also celebrated by getting a ton of sleep, which is good because I was running a pretty bad deficit these last few nights.

I feel physically good today, and I have a camera reserved. I'm gonna film tonight's session, and then make a (minimally edited) video for Zeb's calenda(e)r.

It's a bit weird for me to think that I only have one month left at Cornell. Next semester is in Washington, and then I graduate and I'm gone. Thinking of it that way doesn't give me much incentive to get a social life, but it does motivate me to get one last footbag video done. Tonight will probably be the last time I take out a camera from school... also a bit weird. Hope I play well; I haven't played in over 4 days! 8O Definitely looking forward to shredding again.

It's snowing outside.

Braved the torrential rains last night to go to the gym and film a session with Luis. Really glad I went; 4 days without footbag is too long. It ended up being a good session. Luis hit a bunch of good stuff, like dyno-dyno, a good smear, and spinning osis. I was able to hit a bunch of good tricks and combos, but my string length was pretty poor. I'm not that surprised or concerned about that, given how long it's been since I've been able to play, much less play regularly. I was just happy to be playing, and happy that I was able to hit some big tricks.

Today I went to the media lab and captured the footage. It's always such a good feeling to sit there and go frame by frame and find out that your trick or combo was clean. There were 2 tricks in particular that I was stoked to have filmed cleanly for posterity. I don't want to give anything away until I put out a video, but in general I was able to hit a lot of my highlights from the last few sessions. Some of them I had filmed already, but this time I got them all from a much better, closer angle. The only things I forgot to try for on camera were the WHAT?! variations, and gyro whirl...but I wasn't really feeling that side spin yesterday. Overall I was very pleased with what I hit.

Tonight my department has the equivalent of prom, but with open bar. We'll see how that goes...

Random observation: I really like watching footbaggers who have good style. At the moment, some of my favorites are Penske, Takumi, and Nick Landes.

I haven't been able to access the internet at home recently, which has had a few interesting effects. The best side effect is that I've been going to bed earlier, which is definitely a good thing. The other big effect is that I've been watching old footbag vids on my computer. I like my collection. I watched an old vid of Chilly Philly 2 in order to watch some old Riefer footage to give him feedback. I really enjoyed lots of things about that vid. It was cool to see Flash just destroying shit back in the day, and Yacine when he still played. Ales back when he was still Bruce Banner, and not the Incredible Hulk. I also got a big kick out of watching Dave Clavens compete in intermediate shred30. Crazy how far he's come in so short a time.

So prom last night was a lot of fun but predictably I got pretty drunk, which meant I was hung over today. As such, I went into tonight's session with low expectations, since my body was still in recovery mode. To my pleasant surprise I ended up having a very good session. I mostly focused on playing with double spins, but I also had some longer runs where I was looking to bsos tricks (not combos, too tiring).

Highlights

*double spinning butterfly, new trick
*double spinning legover (spinning merkon), new trick
*Wrecking ball (spinning gyro mirage), new trick.
*flip DSC a couple times
*a run with food bsos and gybas bsos
*a run with dyno, pdx egg, pdlo, blur, ducking clipper, and ripwalk all bsos.
* some clean gyro whirls

The first time I hit DS butterfly I sealed it with a controlled handcatch, but then decided I wanted to seal it with a run. I did within a couple tries, and this proved to be my favorite run of the night. I started with DS butterfly, but a few tricks later my shoelace came untied. I ignored it, hit a DS osis in the same run, and then had DSC off my foot at the very end. That would have been so cool to hit 3 different double spinning tricks in one run. I'm really happy that double spinning is becoming more reliable. It's such a fun concept. When I first started hitting it, I wasn't sure if it would become a reliable component, or just something that I'd hit a few times. Like, it was possible that I'd hit a few DSCs, and be satisfied with that. But now I have hope that it may become part of my game, even if only on one side (I've hit flip DSC like 5 times, but it's far from feeling natural). It also gives me hope that I've been able to hit more than just clipper out of the set.

Recently I've been ending sessions by trying barefoot tricks after I've taken my shoes off, and while I'm warming down. I've hit TATW i-o a few times in the last month, so I decided to try it o-i tonight and had some promising looks. My attempts in shoes (for either) have been less than encouraging.

Got dinner with Luis after the shred. Here's an excerpt from our dinner conversation.

Luis: “So you're allergic to shellfish?â€

Double spinning ducking would be something I can't remember seeing before. That'd be cool.

I've been having fun reading your blog lately. Your game has a lot of good things going on. Looking forward to video footage that you've been talking about.

I don't know that I've seen the Chilly Philly footage you're referring to. Maybe I did though. Hard to remember. Those were fun events. I hated but loved running them. I'm sure you can relate.

Gyro whirling inside...

So at worlds this year i was doing blurry and pdx whirling inside stalls, and people informed me that "whirling inside" is sometimes called "whiz." At Cornell Jam 2 I saw mathieu gauthier hit gyro whirling inside, and I wondered: "is that trick called jizz? Ewwww...."

Got in a solo session last night. I was tired and my body didn't feel like warming up. Still felt good to play, just to clear my head. I spent all day working in front of a computer, so I needed to jump around.

Highlights:

*double spin osis first try. I didn't try much double spins though.
*whirl x17 one side, x19 other side. Felt like I could have done more on either.
*lots of easy zoom tricks on both sides.

Today I'm sending off the very last of my footage to Rory to make a vid of me. The last session that I filmed went really well, and I didn't want to waste the footage on some badly edited piece of crap that I would do, so I'm sending it to him so it meets a better destiny.

That, combined with the fact that I don't have much time to edit (because of school), means that I may drop out of the xmas calendar this year.

EDIT: funny, bob posted as I was writing my response to Pete.

Double spinning ducking is definitely possible, and I'd be surprised if it hasn't been hit. Still, it is an intriguing challenge for me personally. I remember seeing Felix hit spinning ducking spinning something or other at Worlds 03. Eli got it on film too. As for the whole "love-hate" with tournies you've run, I completely relate. The main thing though is that people have a good time, and that you get a chance to go to a few tournies that you don't have to run.

November 19th, 2007

Forgotten highlight from last session:
*dyno x4, new personal record. In theory I should be able to smash this, but setting a new personal dyno record really isn’t on my list of priorities.

Got in a solo shred last night at the gym. There’s definitely a different rhythm to solo sessions. I went into the shred with the loose goal of working double spins, and on my walk over there, the idea of trying flip mind bender also danced into my head.

I warmed up slow, but even in the warm-up I could tell that double spins would be fine that night. They’re getting pretty reliable on strong side. I should type up a list of tips that helped me learn them. I know I’m far from being good at double spins, but I think I have a few tips that could help others out.

Highlights:

*Flip mindbender, new trick. DSC and blurry torque in the seal.
*Strong mindbender, rare.
*DSC bsos, 1st try. :D Had double spinning osis off my foot in the seal… there really was no reason I should have missed the DSosis, I was just too excited.
*Bl. whirl-bl. whirl-psw-psw-tomahawk-pdx torque.
*Wrecking ball again. In general, just assume that all my strongside doublespins are set off of ducking clipper, and happen between the 4th-10th trick in the string.
*DS osis midstring pretty easily a few times.
*barefoot TATW out-in off of my foot. Argh!

I was excited about flip mindbender, less because it was a new trick, and more because it showed me I’m still learning. Some tricks I pick up naturally, and other tricks I have to invest actual effort into learning. A little while back I was messing around with flip mullet, and happened to be filming myself. When I saw my attempts on the screen, I could see that I was setting the bag too high, and overall just timing the move wrong. Evidently, this wasn’t a move that I would have just felt out naturally. I adjusted my technique, and sure enough my flip mullets became much better. Tonight, rather than just flail away at flip mindbender, I decided to try and apply the flip mullet technique. Happily enough, it worked. The cool part though, is after hitting it flip, I readjusted my strongside technique, and hit one of my better strong mindbenders ever. I was definitely a little proud about this. I think in some ways it’s a lot easier to acquire footbag knowledge these days. It’s easier to film yourself, it’s easy to find tips online, and it’s relatively easy to find footage of moves too. I also think some players are taking a more cerebral approach to the game, which probably explains the faster rate of improvement.

Barefoot TATW o-i should be a fun challenge for me to crack. It’s funny, because I first learned DATW o-i, and in some ways that direction is still stronger for me (mostly as a downtime component). I think I hit TATW i-o first because my pixie is so strong on that side, I was able to put it wherever I wanted. All I really had to work on was the next two dexes, which was just a matter of practice and timing. TATW o-i is just the opposite for me. The first dex is what messes me up (maybe because my fairy is so weak), but I feel confident grinding out the last two dexes. In fact, I’ve had some of my more successful attempts by not thinking of the first dex like a fairy, and just trying to tack on an extra legover at the end of my DATW. I think TATW o-i will end up being very similar to i-o, in that the first dex isn’t quite a set, but isn’t quite a normal dex either. I’m gonna continue trying it at the end of my sessions.

Still reading? One final note, only tangentially footbag related. During Cornell Jam 2, a few people stayed at my house: Jon, Ian, and his protégé Matt. One night we went grocery shopping, and Ian and I got ice cream. I finished my ice cream (Klondike caramel-pretzel bars, highly recommended) within a week of the tournament. But I just assumed that Ian also finished his ice cream while he was here. Tonight, as I was rifling through the freezer, I realized that that ice cream container that’s been there for a while was Ian’s ice cream! I was really stoked to realize that, because he bought some premium shit. It’s like, Haagen Daaz caramelized pear and toasted pecan, or some ridiculous gourmet flavor. CFJ2 is like the gift that keeps on giving. Thanks Ian! :)

Still reading.

It's great to hear you're still playing and improving. Last time I read Modified injuries had you thinking about slowing down. Your talk about the mental game and improving has made me want to shred again. That's what I came looking for.

THanks.

 @ "gee whiz." I really like that.

It's thanksgiving break now, and I've been enjoying chilling out at my sister's place. We had lamb for Thanksgiving dinner, I've been drinking lots of nice dark beers (Sam Addams Cream Stout, Smuttynose Robust Porter) and scotch (Talisker), and playing a ton of board games. More than anything though, it's just been nice to have a change of scenery. Wednesday and Thursday were so nice here in central Jersey, that I was able to walk outside in a t-shirt. I haven't been able to do that at school in over a month. I felt like my soul could breathe again; I loved it.

Tomorrow I'll likely hang out in the city with some friends from undergrad. I didn't even pack my footbag gear for this trip... I kinda wanted a break from footbag as well. I'm not injured and I'm not burnt out on the sport, but I definitely sensed that I could use a small break. I'm excited to go back into The City tomorrow. I love the bustle of it all, the variety, the endless possibilities. Just stand at an intersection for 5 minutes and look around. So many different looking people, so many languages, so many possible stories. Being at school you sometimes forget that the world isn't just rich white kids between the ages of 18-22. I miss that bigger world outside. But on the flip of that, I know I should really absorb and relish my last few weeks at Cornell when I go back, because next semester isn't going to be the same feel. I predict that next semester will feel more like I'm back in the working world, and taking night classes. But it won't be that strange microcosm of college that I've been in for the last 3 semesters.

Since this is my footblog, I feel like I should briefly recap my last session, just to be thorough. I last played on Tuesday afternoon. I got out a camera, found it was messed up, got another one, and then ended up having a pretty bad solo session in the gym. I was kinda surprised to have a bad session. A few nights earlier I had a meh session, so it wasn't like I was due. Also, I wasn't stressed during this session because I had just finished up all my school work, and break was about to begin for me. Even so, I ended up playing really badly. I must have played for 80 minutes or so, and throughout the course of it all only had 3 highlights which were remotely video-worthy. I haven't checked the footage yet, so I'm not even sure that I have that much. Between my lack of good footage (I sent all of my really good stuff to Rory) and my lack of time, I'm beginning to have doubts about whether I'll be able to make a video at all for the Calendar this year. I think that at best I'll be able to contribute a video with low-level shred but funny editing, and at worst I'll either drop out or release a very boring tripod video with low-level shred. I'm just not going to worry about that now.

On a positive note, my social life has taken a turn for the better. While this will hopefully make me happier, it also might eat into my footbag time. But again, I'm not going to worry about that just yet.

I think it might be fun and therapeutic for me to make a "thanksgiving list" of things I am grateful for which are related to footbag, but it could be super duper cheesy. F* it, I'll give it a go. I may come back and edit this later.

Ken's 2007 Footbag list of Thanksgiving.

I am thankful...

* that I discovered footbag at all. It's a bit of an obscure sport, there's a little bit of a stigma to it, and if things had gone differently, I might not have ever found it. Considering that it's my favorite thing, I feel really fortunate to have found it. Some people die before ever finding their passion.

* that I discovered footbag when I was 17. That was good timing for several reasons. It helped get me through high school/college/post grad life without getting into drugs or other stupid shit. I remember coming to the realization that drugs and other risky stuff could wait for later, but my shot at actualizing my footbag potential was when I was young, and not to mess with it.

* that I have been able to see so much of the World thanks to footbag. Footbag has allowed me not just to travel to places, but to have connections to cool people in those places to befriend, and show me around. Moving to Japan was much easier because of footbag, and other times footbag saved my ass.

* that I didn't drop out of footbag in the year 2000. I actually did for 6 months. During my time off I came to the realization that footbag is only fun and worthwhile when I play for myself. If I hadn't had this epiphany, I might have stayed out. I would have had a 3 year footbag career. Instead, I can now say that I've been in the sport for 10+ years, and that I've had most of my proudest accomplishments over the last 7.

* for all the really good friends I've made through footbag. I've made some friendships that really transcend this sport. There are people who have dropped out of the sport who I am still tight with, and there are others who I know will continue to be my brothers even if either of us drop out of the sport. It's amazing to me that I would not have met them if not for footbag.

* that there are shoe alternatives to Rod Lavers. Those shoes never fit the shape of my foot, and made footbag painful for the first 8 years of my career. I love my G6s, and I'm happy that people have put in the effort to find other shoes which people can shred in.

* that there are still people out there who put on footbag tournaments. It's often an expensive and thankless job, but its what keeps the sport and the community going. I love that there are so many tournaments every year, on both coasts, and in other countries and continents.

* my health. I've seen many players have their careers derailed or shortened due to injury, and I have to say I've been pretty lucky. 10+ years into the sport, I'm still playing, and playing near the peak of my game. I'm thankful my body has allowed me to do this.

It's getting late now, so I'm off to bed. I may add more later, but for now I think I covered some of the ones that are most important to me. I've been thankful for footbag for a long time now, but I think it's good to actually think about and specifically list why.

It's been over a week since I've played footbag. Today was supposed to be the day... I got my gear, finagled a camera from the lab, and then realized that I don't have my footbag. Luis hasn't picked up his phone for the last 5 hours either. Fuck.

Hopefully over break I'll get footbags from Waylon, Zeb, and Erik. Definitely looking forward to having more than one bag. Fuck.

This is the 1337th post in my blog. Obviously, I felt under some pressure to have a leet session.

I played tonight for my first time in about 10 days. That's pretty crazy. I got out a camera and made plans to meet with Luis, but he had to bail. That's a shame, because I don't know how many more chances we'll have to play at Cornell before I leave. :(

I warmed up really slowly, because I knew my body hadn't played in a while. Despite being very slow and careful with my warm-up, I felt weird pain in my right knee. Damn it. I played through the pain, and ended up having a decent session. But it's a couple hours later and my knee still feels weird. Sucks.

Just finished looking over the footage from the session, and overall I'm pretty happy with it. Only one trick was "the," but I'm putting it on the video anyway because I like the sealing string. That and it's still a 3  Predictably my stamina for runs was down, but I hit 3 new tricks, all of them cool triple dexes. I also hit DSC-blur for my second time ever, and had DSC-fog fly off my foot. My double spins seemed to deteriorate over the session, but at least I hit a bunch of DSing tricks. Looking at the footage, I was surprised that I hit so many DSCs midstring. They're feeling easier and more reliable for sure, but I want them to be tighter.

Spent a little time putting the clips in order. Hopefully I can get a good song from Luis, slap it on, and then send it to Zeb for the calendar. I feel a bit bad about making such a low-quality video. All the clips are tripod footage from solo sessions, and there's not much in the way of long runs. That said, there's a few good tricks and combos, so might as well release it. I just want to contribute to the calendar and add to the variety.

It's crunch time at school now, which is stressful and a little exciting at the same time. Snow and slush on the ground makes it harder to get anywhere, including the gym. While the slush sucks and is inconvenient, it does make me feel smart for going to DC next semester to avoid the worst of the winter.

My Mom sent me a New York Times article about how doing your hobby makes you mentally sharper and better able to deal with stress. Reading the article made it clear to me that they were talking about footbag, and that I should make a conscious effort to get out and play during this period. It's just really hard to find the time.

I made it out the gym last night and played for maybe 10 minutes. I got in like 3 warm up strings (which were super fun) before I was recruited into a pickup basketball game. It was 2-on-2, which meant I was completely exhausted when we finished. We lost, but overall I was happy with how I played. I scored all of my team's points and had some good fakeouts which let me get easy baskets. After the game I decided I'd try and hit barefoot trixie (triple pixie). I figured that it should be doable, given that barefoot TATW has become more consistent lately. I gave it a few tries, hit it, figured it was thin, and then hit it 3 more times. I felt confident that at least one of my last ones was definitely clean, and was content to end the session on that note.

I think 2 good goals for winter break would be to hit TATW in shoes, and to hit my first beast.

I haven't played in a while, and I'm feeling on the verge of insanity, so I figured: what better way to kick off a new page than with an insanely edited Japanese footbag video?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=YJDvC6y_EvA

There's not much footbag in it, but the editing alone is worth a watch. This guy is as crazy as Sam (that's a compliment Sam).
