Yes mec,
Terdelt? Count me in!
January 7
I kicked a LOT on Saturday. Here's the story:
I went out to the park again an hour before sunset (which is at 5pm these days
) and kicked a little. I hadn't formulated any goals beforehand other than to "kick well".
When I play in public, I sort of automatically go for long runs. I avoid trying new (single) tricks and concepts that are hard for me. That's the kind of stuff I keep for my solo sessions in the garage where it is too crammed to bust big.
Anyway, I had a nice little satisfying session with some semi-long runs and okay combos.
Shortly after 5pm I headed home only to discover that
1/ my parents were out
2/ I didn't have my f*king key!
After the initial gust of frustration I reckoned I could be worse off: I was wearing lavers, I had a couple of footbags in my backpack and, as long as I kept moving, the motion-sensor behind the house would provide me with light.
"Let's kick some more!"
I tried some single tricks and short combos until my parents came home, which in the end took another hour! The bright side was that I figured out the zoom set and that I hit some nice gyro stuff (normally just another one of those voids in my game).
Speaking of voids, I also tried some eggbeaters and dlos, also stuff mostly absent from my game. Only now, after almost two years of footbag, have I hit my first toe set dlo
. I've always set dlo from clipper, neglecting the toe set as 'unnecessary'. Recently though I've figured out that one of the reasons why I'm having such a hard time hitting eggbeaters might be the TOTAL absence of toe set dlo (from the very beginning of my footbag career)...!
January 8
Another low-key sesh. I bore in mind that I was gonna go for a pretty long run with a friend of mine afterwards.
NEW TRICK: diving mirage. Another one of those tricks I probably could have hit a year ago, but I just recently thought of it. In fact, it feels a lot cooler than its ducking (4ADD) counterpart...!
I'm gonna watch a video now, then shred.
Oh yeah, I wanna translate. I mean: translate professionally. As in: for cash. Probably on an independant base. That would be a LOT more in touch with my degree, at least more than my previous job at reception! It has always been a sort of dream too, so I think I'll be gathering some information one of the coming days.

I had a very laid-back day on Monday. In the morning I accompanied my gf's sister to her job. Here's the story: she teaches Dutch to (adult) foreign people. There were oral exams on Monday and they needed a layman for an extra vote in the jury. And that was me, although I wouldn't call myself a noob when it comes to language teaching (I'm familiar with the theory at least
). Anyway, it was pretty cool judging foreigners' Dutch.
Some of the students called in sick, busy, pregnant, whatever, so work was done before 12 noon. So I was looking forward to a chill-out afternoon in sunny winter weather. THEN, I managed to get on the wrong train even though there were only TWO trains to choose from
so I got home a little later anyway.
I did get home in time for a little shred in natural sunlight though. Moreover I taped my session which was inspiring and motivating as I had expected (and intended). I haven't reviewed the footage yet but here are some highlights of the top of my head:
*A few nicely long and varied strings.
*Spinning after a duck BS. It took some time to figure out what I was doing wrong on my flipside but the key is to go slow. Catch high after the duck, go low, don't rush the set (straight up!). Before that, I slurred the set, tossing the bag in all directions.
Another step in my quest for 10 unique guiltless dexless...
*cooled down with a new osis record: 28
Still a long way from Vasek's 1,500,000 though.
The plan for tonight: get my ass to Brussels to meet up with Max, Seb, Lex + for a BFC shred. Yeah!

January 10
I had a pretty cool session yesterday evening with the BFC.
The attendance was as follows: Max, Lex, Jul, Ben, me, and argh crazy shredder whose name eludes me for the moment. Seb couldn't make it due to not-so-serious car accident that was somewhat aggravated because the car was borrowed from a friend.
Anyway, it was nice to see some old school BFC members again, namely Ben and crazy shredder whose name eludes me for the moment. I always have to get used to the latter's style though, for he is crazy. He has a pretty aggressive, jumpy, karate kind of style. Anyway, all was well in the end because no one (nor bag) got hurt.
Alexis has finally received his lavers. They're the sweetest! They're red and too small. D'oh! I told him there was nothing to worry about as either his feet or his shoes will adjust in time. He is hoping for the second.
Of course he needs to play them in first, but I think his game has become a lot more consistent over the past months, which isn't entirely due to the lavers...!
Jul's progress is one of the most satisfying I've ever witnessed. His style is beginning to form itself. I saw him hit nicely controlled far legovers and pdx mirages, midstring dimwalks and smears, and a ducking almost clipper. Flip pixie needs work!
He is also trying to figure out atomic, tried stepping in a two man circle with Max and did some pretty high sets, or so I've heard.
EDIT: I forgot to mention the most notable fact, that is Julien was kickin' until late last night even though he had his first exam today...! Now that's what I call hackrifice.
I read Max' report on this session (see Maxblog
) and he sort of minimalises his performance, yet I saw him hit some very nice things among which some long runs, superfly, his first ever flip nuclear (he hit nuclear clipper
, then paradox tap, then paradox tap BSOS
). Even when he's not on top of his game, he is still impressive.
He also devoted a LOT of time explaining wauxpin to me but my retarded visualisation abilities insisted that there was some sort of rake involved, until I finally figured out that the bag passes all the way behind you. Only after Max' 1,410,759,021th demonstration.
As to my shred... well according to Max (again: see Maxblog) I was on top of my game although my perception was different.
I played okay, but my runs were sort of shortish. Weird things were happening to my flip spins. I did hit some deep barflies though which was very satisfying, nailed toe set dlo (yeah, after my outing of being almost unable to do toe set dlo I might as well work on them
) and footed bubbabeater too many times.
Reminder to myself on dlo and bbbbeater:
-set to your front (bubba)
-set low (both)
-keep first dex leggy (bubba)
-ATTACK the dexes! (both)
-lift legover leg higher than you think (dlo).
That should do it!
Oh yeah, I edited and uploaded a vid (17megs, 4.52 mins) from a session with me, Max, and Jul from December. Check it out! It's the one at the bottom named "ULB session".

I did like a 15 km run and had a huuuuge natural high somewhere halfway through
. I hadn't felt that in quite a while (not as a result of running anyway). I'm enjoying so much I think I might do some local races in 2006.
January 13
Had a 50 minute session. It was the first time in weeks that I could shred later than 5pm. Days are getting longer! Awesome.
I hadn't played in three days so I felt a little rusty, which was seriously annoying me. Then I decided on a whim to get rid of my socks which, as I had hoped, improved my bag feel a lot. I figured: Vasek often plays without socks and so do some other top players. I bet they know why.
Mediocre session throughout, although the-loss-of-the-socks was beneficial. Will try that again.

Urgh! Eating breakfast cereals at 4.42pm. What's wrong with me...?
Job Notations
I've been surfing the web all day gathering information about translators, translations, translation offices, independent translating, translation tips, and oh yeah some footbag too.
I've been giving it some serious thinking whether to start translating independently or at some office. Friends and relatives advise me to go for the relative certainty of the latter, but personally, I feel the scales tipping towards the former.
I mean, I was gonna start writing job applications today but, as I was looking up some profiles of translation companies, it struck me that most of them work primarily/only with freelance translators anyway. If the choice is between working under the guidance/surveillance of someone
or doing the exact same thing at my own pace, at the time and place of my choice... well, then I'm prepared to take the chance.
I have an appointment with someone from the 'werkwinkel' (literally: 'job shop') on Thursday to 'elaborate on where I want to go professionally'. It's an 'invitation by force' IMO, i.e. if one fails to get one's jobless ass over there, they can withdraw one's benefit - not that I'm benefiting in any way now.
Anyhow, when I received the invitation last week I was like 'argh, stop bothering me, I've just figured out what I want to do and I'm about to write job applications'. Now I think the meeting might actually be fruitful. For all I know the woman may have some good advice.
Footbag
Nothing much from that part
January 14
Long nice session, first at the park, then home. Good work on spins and gyro. I hit gyro pickup (new trick, BS) and had a not-so-intense go at some other spinning tricks.
The sun was out the whole weekend which was awesome.
January 15
10 minute session of BOPs before running.
January 16
1h10 of footbaggin'. Just halfway through I thought I'd call it a day when suddenly I realised I had too much energy left. So I shredded some more a lot more intensively than I've probably done in weeks...!
I think one of the problems with my recent trainings is the lack of intensity. Some sessions would go like kick>run>drop>stare>think> (rpt). Yesterday I tried to avoid stare>think to obtain kick>run>drop>run>drop etc. and after only half an hour I felt an improvement of my game that would normally take me two whole sessions. Merde!
I'm gonna go cut my hair now. Ain't no hairdresser gettin' a dime outta me.
Cheers.

My advice: don't work independantly. At least not yet. Working independantly has some very real benefits (as you stated) yet the drawbacks are HUGE. Just trying to figure out how / when / what amount of taxes to pay is rocket science. The amount of paperwork one has to do just to get "independant" status is a nightmare also. Trust me on this one. I would advise you to get some starting position in one of those offices if you can. The security is great and is something you get accustomed to very quickly. I htink the whole freelancer thing is a lot easier to get into once you have a certain proffessional experience and know-how of your sector.I've been giving it some serious thinking whether to start translating independently or at some office. Friends and relatives advise me to go for the relative certainty of the latter, but personally, I feel the scales tipping towards the former.

Just my two cents (and yes I've worked independantly before)

Thx for the advice though.

Hmmm, I think I should be fine there. There's an organisation that does that for you for a sharp price (less than €100).The amount of paperwork one has to do just to get "independant" status is a nightmare also.
You're probably right about that. I'll give it some more thinking. I hope the 'werkwinkel'-woman can help me out somehow..I would advise you to get some starting position in one of those offices if you can. No kidding! That's pretty cool. In what sector was that, if I may be so bold as to inquire into thisand yes I've worked independantly before

45 min kick today just before sundown. I was goofing around with the components I've got dialed, like usual. Then, I decided on a whim to go back to schooling some fives, which I hadn't done in a while.
Hit:
blurry whirl first try.
Soooo close to mobius! It missed my foot by less than an inch flip and it hit my ankle on strongside. Daaaamnation!
Then I tried toe drifter and sealed it BS first try. Yay. I used to go for downtime drifters from toe last summer but never hit it. A few months later I realised it's easier from clip so I totally neglected toe drifter until today.
Cooled down with infinities and did the sweet number of 69, my second best ever although a long way from 110
.
-------------------------------
Today's most glorious fact, however, came to me by e-mail from Holland. A publicity company contacted me on behalf of one of their clients (a chewing gum factory or so). Apparently, they intend to set up a campaign comparable to Kellogg's a while back. Kellogg's included a "footbag" (actually more of a kicky ball in plastic) in the packages. Don't know if this was an international initiative, they did so for the Belgian market anyway.
Anyhow, the chewing gum people are gonna do something similar but I have the impression they want to stay more in touch with how footbag actually is. Hence, I got an e-mail saying they were looking for the "best footbagger(s) of Belgium/the Netherlands" for a film/picture shoot. Woot!
I explained to them that we have not yet organised a national championship etc. etc. but sent them some videos from my gallery which they were pretty enthousiastic about
.
So here's the deal: a Belgian delegation (the other BFC members are pretty wild about it too) will represent footbag for a Dutch filmshoot next month. Then, the gum people will use the recorded material for billboards and a small online 'trick section', so the people at home can shred while they chew.
Amazing!
What is also cool is that, apart from the expenses, we'll probably get paid like €500-€1000 for the thing too or so I've been told...
Crazy. I'm curious how this will work out.

Sure Doc, if you can make it to Rotterdam on that particular (and not yet determined) day, you're most welcome! Will keep you informed.
I think the more we are, the more accurate their idea of footbag will be. I mean, although footbag freestyle is mostly singles and most freestylers spend a LOT of time schooling on their own, footbag is all about being together. You know, the posse-feeling that few outsiders can understand.
All depends on the day but if there is no problem there are not much reason who could stop me from going to Rotterdam.

Ello,
January 19
Very deep, high, and consistent torques. Yumm.
I also kind of discovered a cute BOP drill. It goes like toe>ss butterfly>osis>pdx mir> (rpt)
Today’s job notations:
The woman from the ‘werkwinkel’ who is supposed to facilitate finding a job didn’t prove VERY helpful today. I sat at her desk for 45 minutes and in fact the only thing we did was setting up a personal profile and then doing the same thing all over again after her computer had crashed.
She did give me some advice, but not about the things I had hoped for :-/ I also don’t know yet if I will take her advice into account. Hmm. I just hope I’ll have a job before our meeting next month haha.
Speaking of which, up to now none of the translation companies that have received my application and cv have responded in an explicitly positive way. If I don’t get lucky one of these days I will probably go through with the independent profession thing.
January 21
Started off my 40 min kick with shuffle and almost equalled my tripless record of 8. Gna! I dropped on a bloody ripwalk of all tricks:-s . The string went like atom smasher>legbeater>blur>dimwalk>sidewalk>ripwalk>sidewalk>ripwalk (drop). Inspired by this, I also went for rubberman but kept failing on the turning point. I should be able to do about 10 tripless.
New trick: atomic clipper. I would very much like to downtime that, toe reverse drifter is sweet.
After the shuffle I shifted attention to some low-dex stuff due to painful legs. Okay spins and ducks, but where did my gyro go…..?
Oh yeah, I was gonna compete in the online comp but failed to hit my sick three (as my sick 1 in fact) and didn't want to enter with anything less than that.
Next time.

Sunday January 22
45 mins of kicking. Same idea: started off with shuffle but a little into the session shifted to low-dex stuff. The best run of the afternoon was probably one with ducking paradox mirage BSOS.
I also footed spinning mirage a few times BS. Man, that trick is weeeeird! I think I have to figure out a more efficient way to tackle it because I feel like, after the spin, I can't stop the motion and come back in time for the catch
. Perhaps that's due to my mediocre spinning set in general.
That leads me to a little priority I've set for myself. As I can hit torques, drifters, and barflies cleanly and pretty consistently now, I think it's time to move on.
A new short term priority is getting good at basic spinning tricks like spinning osis, spinning butterfly, gyro mirage. I've hit all those on several occasions but never really got them dialed.
A long term priority then is being able to spin from several components like double downs, drifters, and also osi. A noble priority.
Reading Zach Marine's blog also got me pumped about drills again, so I came up with some toe drills that should affect my toe play:
pixie legover>fairy ss pickup (rpt)
pixie ss mirage>smudge (rpt) (or: fairy ss mirage>smudge or: pixie ss mirage>fudge, once my fairies are decent).
And once I can toe and spin well, I'll be goooood
.
It's chilly but nicely sunny outside so I think I'll pop out to the park in an hour and a half for a sundown shred.
Must shite now. Ta-taaa.

I definitely think you are on the right track Wim.

Thanks dude!
I just got off a nice session on the turntables. Ahhhmmm
January 23
1h of bagging.
On the flipside, I had a good basics session with consistent torques, drifters and strongside blender
I feel some progress on my little get-better-at-spinning resolution. I hit a bunch of spinning butterflies but had trouble with spinning osis (although I could do that over a year and a half ago...
). When I went for spinning osis I accidentally hit spinning butterfly, which I thought was a good sign
.
New trick: spinning mirage BS (sketchy catch on one side).

The understatement of the century! It was friggen' coooold! It took me 15 minutes of hopping and bopping just to get remotely warm and I didn't break a sweat the whole hour.Wim wrote:It's chilly but nicely sunny outside so I think I'll pop out to the park in an hour and a half for a sundown shred.

January 24
45 mins of kikkin'.
Did some longish runs, of which one starting with legbeater>pdx whirl> around 15 contacts with rip, blur, and ducking clipper>spinning clipper 'almost' BSOS.
Great progress on the spinning resolution! I hit spinning mirage (new trick since yesterday) and spinning butterfly with a +50% hit rate. Also hit a few spinning osi.
January 25
Again 45 minutes.
I had a hard time warming up and initially I kept dropping on every other trick...! A little into the session, however, I finally managed to hit ducking clipper>spinning clipper BSOS. On to (rpt) now!
On a sidenote, I also finished stitching my 2nd BAG. It's even smaller than the last one and has bleed holes (unlike my 1st
). I'm getting the hang of this stitching, although I cut the pentagons a wee bit too big for the hexagons so some of the bleed holes may be too wide. I'll post a pic soon because it looks pretty sweet! Next bag should be bigger though
