Fuck fuck fuck fuck

Well after working all day to loosen up my neck, and feeling halfway decent by the time I got home, but jittery from too much advil, I got ready to kick, stretched in the kitchen and on my way out to the barn folded my left ankle (the previously injured one) over. Heard a grotesque popping/cracking and felt searing pain on the outside part of my foot. Fell to the ground like a ton of bricks and started yelling 'fuck fuck fuck'. I hop inside on my right leg and crumple to the ground with more yelling (I think Keegan learned a new word today).

Interestingly, within 10 minutes, the searing pain was gone, and I felt somewhat normal. Huh? So strange.

So I went out anyways and played really lightly for 25 minutes to determine the damage level. Severe crank hurts, but other than that, I was pretty OK. I'm very slightly puffy and black and blue and sore, but not like I feared. I truly honestly without question thought that was it for footbag for me. That's how bad it was initially. So strange.

So, 'fuck fuck fuck fuck' has turned into taking it easy on crank moves for a few days and seeing how it goes.

Some days are just not meant to be. But I'll be thankful tentatively that it wasn't worse.

edit: What a way to start a new page eh?

Well, it turns out my relative lack of pain last night was due to adrenaline (sp?) or my body's defense mechanisms or something. Becuase my ankle is hella sore today. Can't walk very well. Neck is also still stiff.

So, I will be forced to take the rest of this week and weekend off I think. I'm icing the ankle at work and will visit a doctor if anything makes me nervous of this being anything other than a simple sprain. So far I don't think there's any rips or anything like that - I think a rip would result in extreme pain and lots of swelling, but I don't have either of those. Also, my strength in straight away motions is fine and pain free, it's just anything to either side that hurts.

My neck is what it is, and it will be better in a few days. So I just need really be careful for a few days, and follow the RICE routine so that I can try to play next week I guess.

Damn it. Weight loss and kicking have been progressing so nicely, I didn't need this setback right now. My mindset was really in a positive place and I was feeling good about myself. Damn it.

OK fine, I'm going to the doctor's this afternoon. It's probably just a simple sprain, but why do I have health insurance if I don't use it? Better to be safe than sorry.

If you're bruising, that means you're bleeding, which probably means you've got some tears. From the pain and swelling you described they might not be severe tears, but still... a week off might be too optimistic. Good luck & take care of that ankle.

ha ha, I didn't even see your post before I posted that I was going to the doctor's. Sound advice though, thanks!! Everything I'm reading online says "just go to the stupid doctor's office to be sure".

My doctor is cautiously optimistic that it's a minor sprain without any rips etc. To be sure there aren't any breaks I had an x-ray this evening and will know the results tomorrow. He thought that if there are no breaks, I should be able to lightly work the ankle out as soon as Monday. Keep your fingers crossed!

Still haven't heard back about the x-ray yet, but I'm hopeful. From a starting point of 10% strength, I'm already up to 65-70% strength. Advil + ice + elevation etc. Cracking and popping a lot, but it always has done that (just not this much).

Good news! According to my doctor, there are no breaks in my ankle or my foot, and no tendon rips either. Just a "mild deep sprain". That seems like an oxy moron to me, but he explained it this way >> "You didn't massively sprain the entire ankle, it's limited to one specific area.. therefore, 'mild'. However, the one area that you did sprain was tweaked pretty nicely.. therefore, 'deep'."

I'm sure he was dumbing it down for my sake. I'm walking normally now and straight ahead motions are pain free. I can do my rotate-my-foot stretches to about 50-60% of usual. Crank out (like an outside stall) is pain free. Crank in (like clipper stall) hurts pretty bad still.

Doctor encouraged me to play lightly starting on Saturday. Light play, plenty of pre and post stretching, follow practice with ice and advil. He thought a week or two of that sort of routine would get me back up and running and would ward off the ankle becoming overly stiff while healing.

So, I'll take tonight off from kicking again (I've been lifting still) and relax tomorrow night too. Play on Saturday.

Rotation exercises are about 80% today, and cracking/popping when I move around is close to being what is was before but stlill slightly more than I'd like to hear. Pain is mostly gone. Held some footbag cranked ankle positions last night and can feel pain, but it's dull and distant. Feel a little weak and jittery. But, I'll play tomorrow and see what I can work on that doesn't make me nervous. If this rate of improvement continues, I think I should be 100% by end of next week, and I think I can be productive in the meantime.

Tonight, beeeeers. I don't drink during the week anymore, and I don't usually look forward to the arrival of the weekend solely because I'm allowed to have a drink. But this week was rough across the board, so I gotta say... I'm gonna get a little tipsy tonight. Maybe I'll build a fire out in my fire pit >> a cold night with a warm fire and some beers is a good time. Or maybe I'll just watch ESPN and play guitar and have some wine. I dunno, but tipsy is going to be part of it tonight. I've earned it.

beers...

Well, it depends on my motivation - night out on the town, or just sitting home. Usually, because I'm watching my caloric intake, I drink something like Bud Select (which is tastier than Miller or Coors light, but has same calory count) which is only somewhat satisfying because I really like tasty beers. But, on special occasions, or when I'm out at a bar, I lean towards hoppy beers in most cases. Victory Hop Devil is one that everyone knows, but not my favorite for some reason - their beers have a heavier taste than I want. Good pale ales are a favorite of mine. I'll enjoy a stout or porter as well, but those are usually 1 beer and switch types of drinks for me because I get full from drinking them. Many of the micro brews have been tried at our household.

For Thanksgiving we got the holiday mix case from Saranac. Except for the caramel porter, I liked all of them. The Oatmeal Stout was my favorite, but the Chocolate Amber was really good too.

Actually, back in Selinsgrove (where I went to Susquehanna U. for undergrad) there's a brew pub (creatively named "Selinsgrove Brew Pub") that we visited a lot. They've actually been named nationally a few times as one of the top brew pubs in the country. A legit brew pub (not a big commercialized place) with originality in their selection is really something I enjoy. Happens very infrequently for me these days though.

And you?

Played today for about 40 minutes. I did a little bit of a lot of things. My ankle was not that flexible at the start of the session - even kicking was sending the bag forward instead of straight up. Clipper drills were even a little bit difficult. But, after warming up, I was able to do whirls, toe whirls, pdx whirls, ripwalks, butterflies etc. So I was pretty encouraged.

My damn period key is sticking..............

Anyhow, called it a quits early and stretched really well after. I'm icing the ankle now. We'll see how tomorrow goes.

Put about 50 minutes in today. Anything clipper/inside related is just a little off still. I'll take tomorrow off, because I'm a little sore. I did learn that I jump when I do stepping set, but it's not a jump, it's a switch of weight. Like, your upper body should stay in the same place and you switch from supporting your weight to high knee. Hard to explain but it gets me more set height (because previously my peak during the jump would cause delay until I reached the ground again, therefore set height was wasted) and I'm more balanced. Hit rip > rip a bunch of times starting on both sides. Drifter > drifter a bunch on both sides. Lots of whirls and lots of toe whirls. I'm a little nervous to really go for pdx whirls because my ankle feels clumsy, so that wasn't clicking. Tomorrow, day off. Tuesday maybe switch it up and focus on atomic so I can stay off the clippers a little.

edit: I got under armour leggings today and boy do they help out in my shred barn.

Thats a good thing, Riefer-man. Energy and motivation, thats rare and precious stuff for me now-a-days. I haven't been able to summon up the get-up-and-go to get any real kicking in lately at all, and its a bummer.

Jon - kick tonight if you can. I'm playing at 5:30 p.m. Then visit my blog and let me know what you hit and I'll do the same. Almost like we're shredding together. I'll be working on atomic. I don't remember you hitting atomic ever/much, why don't you depart from your normal practice and do 30 minutes worth of atomic practice?

I think Jon stood me up for the prom

Well, I worked on paradons, barflies, and atomic mirage (where atomic set and mirage are on opposite legs). My ankle is still not right so my clipper and butterfly are pretty much useless for about the first 20 minutes of each practice until it loosens up. But whatever, I'm not going to let that get me down - although it's tempting because I'm sort of at this "getting better at lots of things, but mastering none of them" phase. Instinctively, that makes me want to focus on one component for many practices in a row so I can master one fucking thing, but my 31 year old body isn't happy with me when I do that (needs me to mix it up). Tack the bum ankle on top, and it's easy to get down. But I'm not going to! Even if I can't tell sometimes, I'm getting better with each practice. And skinnier too.

Anyhow, enough with the self pep talk. Paradons went well. Several times I hit paradon > pdx mirage > repeat on other side. Nice deep slow paradons. I cannot hit barfly, and have not ever hit it. But I will be able to hit it very soon because my form and sets are so much better now than ever before. Just a matter of timing. Atomic, thanks to watching Anz Tips, was working nicely. I hit atomic mirage a bunch of times strong side, but not on weak. Tried and tried. No luck. PM'd Kjopa (sp?) because I really like his atomics and would like more vid of how he does them. Again, I found with both of these concepts that I was jumping, rather than switching my weight and lifting my legs. When I concentrated on not jumping up so high, I had more time to do the tricks.

Damn I typed a lot for a shitty session

Sorry, Bobby,

It was five hours of over-time for me tonight. A little more than last night. Just got home now, round-about 10:30 pm. This is the kind of stuff thats been keeping me from the game. And its been irregular, coming in fits and spurts, for the past three or four months. When I'm not actually working over-time, I'm de-motivated to start training, as I may put in good hours of practice one week, only to have to abandon my training the following two... I think my travails may conclude just as the year does, and then, perhaps, I'll recover my motivation in the new year. Also, by then I'll have made enough extra to pay for my laser-beam-eye-surgery. Not that I really needed to make any extra for it, but what the hell, its nice to think of an extra expense as being covered by extra income. Anyway, I don't like to be told when to play by anybody. If you don't stop trying to motivate me, then I'm going to take over your blog with my boring sob-stories of my wage-slavery. Nobody wants that to happen. I'm glad you're feeling motivated -- now keep it to yourself !

At least I had good music for company tonight... Got all the way through Live Dead and then American Beauty. Its been a long time since I'd listened to Live Dead at a high enough volume to really appreciate it. I'd practically written off "Death Don't Have No Mercey", having totally forgotten how hard Jerry jams out in the middle of it. And "Love Light"... so good. Now I need to find a really good version of "Good Morning Little School Girl". Any suggestions?

bitch and moan, bitch and moan.. ha ha just joking

Live Dead.. Funny, I've been listening to that recently too. What you say about needing some volume to truly appreciate is totally on the money. First track at loud volume really is enjoyable in my opinion. Really washes out my brain or something like that
