Re: Canberra, Australia via SCL - Daniel Boyle
Not yet, it seems to be getting much better now, I had a longer kick yesterday and it didn't hurt at all. I will keep an eye on it though. The other thing with these big debates is that people get so attached to their opinion and defending it that they then take away their enjoyment of playing the game, which is not a good thing.

I haven't read all 300 comments in that thread, but I was impressed when Mark Monistere said, "Hm I have to think about this." It's nice to see someone who is willing to re-consider their stance after hearing differing opinions.boyle wrote: 15 May 2018 14:03 The other thing with these big debates is that people get so attached to their opinion and defending it that they then take away their enjoyment of playing the game, which is not a good thing.

Re: Canberra, Australia via SCL - Daniel Boyle
I've just come back from doing a little demo at Nico's preschool. It was quite fun and went well. I've never done a demo with kids so young before, but they were really good and engaged. We just did a short time, but nearly everyone had a go, and at least balanced it on their foot or kicked it up in the air and caught it in their hands. I've also given the preschool a bunch of bags so they can have a play with them throughout the rest of the year.
It's actually quite a while since I've done any demonstrating (not since they had the event at the local shops last year). Sometimes I think I would like to do more of that stuff, in an organised fashion, but I think it's best to just do things every now and then when they come up. So it went quite well, I might try and line up a similar thing at his daycare centre later in the year as he will be going to school next year.
Something that came up on that thread on Facebook I mentioned before, is that there should be some sort of crowdfunding to support footbag. It's actually something I've thought about doing for sometime, but I don't know if it's a worthwhile activity. It's obviously not a good investment if you want to turn some kind of profit, but quite a few people mentioned having a GoFundMe page or a Patreon campaign. If you had a system where people could send in a video with what they wanted to do (put on a competition, put out a sweet video, attend a competition etc), then they had to give something back (most likely by video, blog post etc). It is something I have been thinking about for sometime and I have a little bit of money at the moment which I could kick start (pardon the pun) a project like that with.
Unfortunately that money won't put myself to going to Worlds this year, but let's see what options the next years come up with, hopefully can go to one or both of them. They've just put the bidding process out so we will see what the options are.

Good job on the demo. Yeah you used to do a ton of that didn't you?

I had great fun doing that demo. I have gone on and off doing demos and things. I did a lot in Chile because I had a pretty flexible schedule. I also did a lot when I lived in Melbourne some time ago (2007). I have done some really cool ones over the years (also some not so good ones).
This one was very good, because I was going there already, it's in my street and the children reacted very well to it.
On the funding stuff above, I had a long chat with Caroline the other night talking about this and a few other things. We will see what we can make with that. Whether or not we set up some funding things, I'm planning to start doing some online competitions later in the year.
It's still been quite nice weather during the days. I had a couple of visits to the Belconnen skatepark this week, had some fun hanging out by the lake.

I haven't really been playing for long enough to work on much new stuff. That problem with the knee seems to have disappeared. Still have a bit of an issue with somewhere in the rib, but it hasn't stopped me playing at all. I haven't really had any time to put aside to a longer session so I can't really say it make too much difference.
I have a few days off Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. Hopefully on one of those I can get in a session in the sun, that would be cool.

Re: Canberra, Australia via SCL - Daniel Boyle
It's still 5. I've dropped a 6th trick quite a few times and I think I could probably do 7 or 8 if things turned out well. I really should have got to that 6 mark by now, but it hasn't happened.
I put up a new vlog. Not really much footbag in that one, I think the clips that went in there are already on my Instagram. That brings an end to the vlogs I made for my trips away to see The Butterfly Effect, those were some fun little escapades.
I had a pretty good session yesterday in the garage. I came close to pixie ducking dlo, which I had never really had much of a go at before. I did hit pixie ducking symp mirage, I think I've done that before.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BjUcrccA_mQ
Today the new trick was pixie ss torque. This took a large number of attempts, but I got it a couple of times towards the end.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BjWcB21gaVZ
So the run of a few days off work is complete, it was a pretty good weekend all round. I took Nico to the ice hockey on Sunday, we have never been before. That was quite fun, and the Canberra team had a strong win (4-1). Also the Raiders even had a victory. Nice to get the win in the last second for a change, rather than the loss.

Re: Canberra, Australia via SCL - Daniel Boyle
I had a long solo session today. 2 hours as a matter of fact. I never really play for that long, but it was nice out. I didn't get so much sleep last night and I started kicking just to wake myself up.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BjbGv20ArbQ
I started out going for the 20x20, but I mentioned in Erik's blog that I was hitting 19s and 39s it was driving me made. Instead I worked on fearless (same result, going crazy).
The Instagram clip shows one of the better results. I was hoping to get that 6 I mentioned above and I only came close a couple of times. I don't normally spend so long in a session just trying fearless, but it was something on my mind today.
I actually think with things going to play I could get 8, possibly 9.
(phoenix>blurry whirl>spinning whirl>spinning ducking butterfly>spinning ducking osis>ducking PS mirage>motion>paradox blender>tomahawk
If I could get that far maybe I cold throw something else in but I don't really see myself getting that far. Before getting to possibly 8 or 9, I should stick with getting to the next number, which is 6.
However, today the though was adding to my regular sort of combinations to make something a bit more. The most common combos that I hit are
phoenix>blurry whirl>spinning ducking butterfly>spinning ducking osis>motion>pdx blender (I haven't hit that complete combo, the other option is to start with darkwalk and go into the spins.
What I realised today is that I'm not having any tricks on both sides to go for these higher numbers, so I have to work on the flipside tricks, they're not consistent enough, or I can't link them properly. The other thing is you want to go for your strongest tricks that are more reliable.
Anyway, the two moves I added to the possibility today were a spinning whirl before the spinning ducking butterfly. It didn't really work out, but I think in future it's quite possible. It may also work between the two spinning ducking tricks. The other addition was a ducking ps mirage after spinning ducking osis. This gave a bit of a pause (and a touch of the toe as well).
What I need to work on is some tricks to do ahead of the phoenix. I am too weak on that side, even with something like ducking ps mirage. I think the best option is spikehammer, but it doesn't give me power to go into the phoenix, and is not very reliable. To go to a high number of those kind of tricks you need to stick with your strong options, so I need to get some of them a bit stronger.
The other idea is to do a pixie motion out of the ducking ps mirage, but I think that is a bit risky. Worth a try the next time.
I have this silly idea, I might even try and get it done for Joulu this year. It has very little though put into it, but the idea is to play on many, many tennis courts, preferably dilapidated (the worse condition the better) and in strange country towns, wearing Rod Lavers shoes.
I've seen a couple of cool edits lately, I think I'd like to start putting some stuff aside for a shred edit, rather than a vlog or a quick Instagram.

Re: Canberra, Australia via SCL - Daniel Boyle
Love the clips.
So close to 6 fearless!
Ugh, ducking ps mirage is such an awkward 5 to link out of and into, but it's one of my easiest 5s... I've never really practiced this at all, except the one session yeears ago where I hit 6, but the combo I planned that is probably easiest for me is spinning ducking butterfly > rev mullet > spinning ducking mirage > ducking symp whip [repeat] > rev whirlygig x2. Now that my ankle is getting better I may work at this a bit each session. Thanks for the inspiration!
When I struggle with 20x20, I do BOPs or super easy stuff just to get the contacts. After a couple of these I usually start to play better again... it's weird, but neat. Every 20x20 session feels fulfilling and that's why I've been keeping at it. Even if I hit nothing super neat, it feels like an accomplishment.

Re: Canberra, Australia via SCL - Daniel Boyle
I came super close in that one. I'd never really though about linking ducking ps mirage before, because like you say, it's quite awkward. I found motion out of it to be pretty easy, and today I actually hit ducking ps mirage>pixie op motion. So that's a further idea. Unfortunately I didn't hit anything else of note.
Yes, I've been falling behind in my 20x20 missions, it's been quite a while since I've done one. Here's a clip for today. I'm sure I cut the end out, but it just goes on with me not really hitting anything after the main run.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BjoSWODAoeh
I'm going to be teaching tomorrow. It's actually the first time I will have been teaching this year. I'm quite excited by that, as the work has been quite boring in recent times. I will of course hope to sneak in a little bit of footbag into the day. I think it's going to rain tomorrow, so that might be a bit of an inside thing.
We went to a mortgage broker today, to find out how much we can borrow. It was reasonably positive there.

Re: Canberra, Australia via SCL - Daniel Boyle
I want to do the 20x20 but I have been failing to keep count! But in a not so distant past I was working hard for 100 contact guiltless (with variety not just bops) and the thing is the more you train to do lots of contacts, the more you do
So even if you fail, I think you are doing the right thing to try to do as many possible runs of lots of contacts, keep at it!

That's another one I've got to go back to, I got 92 not so long back, that's very frustrating. In reality in those 20x20, I really try for some big numbers, because if you get 100, that's 5 done straight away!
I think both are very good training. I don't really do much drilling (as in, doing a set combo like drifter>pdx drifter rpt or whatever, xanabox combo)- I probably should, but I find it pretty boring in all honesty, probably because I keep dropping.
The hardest thing for me with the 20x20 is to set aside the time for it, I find I generally need about an hour to do, and I often have much shorter sessions.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bjt-ViTAGR9
Here's some clips from the last couple of short sessions. Spinning ducking motion from yesterday and pixie ducking motion today. I also hit spinning diving butterfly on the flipside. I think that's new, but maybe I've done it before. Not very confident with that though, if I could get more confident with those flip spin ducks, well then I could really boost after the fearless combos. However, that's someway off.

Re: Canberra, Australia via SCL - Daniel Boyle
Today was about enough talk of 20x20 session, more doing. Got there (eventually). Looking at my records, seems it's the first time I've done that since mid April.
I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but I have some good records now over the last few years in terms of how many hours of sleep, what I eat, what I drink, what exercise I do, what books I read, if I write anything, some good things that happen in the day and how much money I spend.
https://www.instagram.com/p/Bjvm71vAaWr
A friend asked me early in the piece if I had noticed any difference, and at that stage I couldn't see too much difference. Now that I've been going at it a few years, things seem to be improving.
Anyway, this 20x20 session was a little disappointing, as there were very few 40+ strings, actually not that many 30 plus either. Plenty of times I could barely get started at all, but eventually I got there. My work schedule is a bit better than usual this week. I only had the one shift (yesterday) with an 11pm finish. Not sure how that will make any change to my time available to play - probably not much.
A weird thing happened in my hometown where I grew up the other day. It's a small town not too much happens, but this guys killed a coupe of people (including his Grandma) in some kind of made rampage. Weird world we live in.

I never really set aside time for 20x20, I kind of think of it just as the majority of the session and try to fit other things within that framework. So if I wanna BSOS a specific trick, I'll do it and aim to continue the run to at least 20. If I don't, and I keep failing while trying other things I just dial down the difficulty until I'm playing to my standards again. I also takes breaks, so usually when I hit each 5x20 I'll take a break and do some harder, funner stuff, then go back to the 20s after, so it doesn't feel like a chore. But overall it always feels satisfying to get the 20 done, regardless of how well I'm playing that session.
Props on the alpine motion sickness and alpine potion! Huge tricks!
Also, sucky about the shooting.
So many selfish people in the world.
That's why it's so important for those of us that're sane to stay positive and optimistic.

Re: Canberra, Australia via SCL - Daniel Boyle
Yes, I usually break it up like that. I usually just try and get 5 to get things running (and if things are going disastrously by that point then I usually think it's not a day for the 20. A lot of the time I don't actually play for so long, so that's why I have to think about setting aside some time for that.
So after the 5 fairly easy ones, try for 5 more that are just mixed, hopefully get some flow to it, maybe jag a couple of bigger numbers. Lately after getting to 10 I will try and work on fearless for a little while, or also shred 30. After that, usually try and get a few easy-ish ones, maybe get a few of those higher contact runs, try not to get to many 19s!
Xanabox I haven't done, I think I've done 4 or 5 contacts actually, a long while back. My flip paradon sucks, so that's a problem. It's a little bit better now so maybe that's something to look at again.
I'm happy to be doing some of those bigger motion based tricks, though I'm finding I can't really play out of them with very much. Have to work on that.

Re: Canberra, Australia via SCL - Daniel Boyle
Ah, I see, I guess I just wrongly assume that people play in the same kind of intervals that I do, which is fewer but longer sessions. I can see how it would be much harder to get 20x20 in shorter sessions. My sessions are usually 2-ish hours, so getting 20x20 isn't too difficult. I also never solo, which probably helps a lot too.
Would love to see xanabox. I don't think I've ever even tried. I never practice double switches.

Re: Canberra, Australia via SCL - Daniel Boyle
Yes, I would say my sessions are not really in the common style. I just try and make use of my short breaks and things, but it's good if I can get a long session. Unfortunately pretty much every session is solo, though every now and then I can get in a kick with some other people and that's really enjoyable.
I really find that I struggle at things like Worlds though, because I'm used to playing for maybe 30 mins, or an hour or so each day, but then you're there and everyone is kicking for 4 hours or so. I was taking a look at xanabox today, couldn't get it but was just trying some of the different parts, I think I could definitely get the 5 contacts, but the last paradon will give me a lot of grief. We'll see about that.
I cleaned up the garage today, spent a couple of hours doing that and it was really worthwhile. It really opened up the shred space. Lately I've had too many things in the way to really kick properly in the garage. One big difference is moving a small red table that was quite close to where I normally kick.

You can see the difference from a clip like this - https://www.instagram.com/p/BiJUvjWgkrU
(Though neither clip gives the full picture, which I think is even more impressive). Anyway, I'm on my days off from work and that's very nice. Took baby Jasmine out for a long walk in the stroller today. I was hoping to still see some autumn colours around, but seems it's a bit late for that.

Wow, yeah, huge difference!
I guess based on what Mathieu says in his blog it sounds like we all have pretty difference standards for how our sessions run. Weird that you find the paradon the hardest. For me it's definitely the reapers and double switches. I don't think I've ever tried the drill though. Maybe worth a casual shot today. This is probably the closest I've come, but I don't think I've ever drilled reapers into anything...

Re: Canberra, Australia via SCL - Daniel Boyle
I got 2 rounds of 20x20 in the last two days. It was good to get them, because I could have easily not played at all. We had some friends over for dinner last night, ate plenty, had a few drinks. I really felt like doing something, some kind of exercise later, so I went for a kick. I did manage to get the 20x20 eventually.
This morning I was playing around with Nico in the garage, he was making a mess of my newly tidy area. As we were playing I was doing some footbag, which I wouldn't have been able to do before tidying things up. It's only really half tidied, but there's so much more space in there for kicking. But I managed a 20x20. Almost all the runs were only just over 20 though, not much variety as well, I'd like to work on incorporating more of that. Something I'm evening working on is for every couple of clipper tricks, just to bring in some sort of toe trick, get some more balance on that.

I was actually happier with this run out in the freezing cold with not really footbag equipment on. https://www.instagram.com/p/BkB1s31gC6l It's starting to get a bit cold here. Maybe some snow in the city. I guess for those with regular snow, that's nothing. I'm due to volunteer at a school fete thing tomorrow. Hopefully if it's going to snow, the thing won't be on.
Anyone have any guesses for the upcoming years of Worlds? They've asked for bids for 2019 and 2020. I would like to see Spain and Japan myself. I don't have any inside information, but that's a couple of places I'd like to go. My Dad has just come back from Japan, it seems he had a great time there.

I want to go to Japan! But I also need to save up more than I currently have I think...
Just wanted to say I appreciate that you post links to your Instagram runs here. I am on Instagram, but I try to keep my feed purely art, since that's why I got it, and don't even follow anyone else aside from like my best friends. So I miss out of IG hack videos unless they're cross-posted to Facebook or here.
Also good job on the 20x20s
Toe tricks are hard! I probably do very few tricks that end up on toe, and the majority of my 20x20 runs probably have zero toe-to-toe tricks... Hmm.. Maybe once I fix my back I'll try to do more toe stuff.
