Got in another shred on Monday with Age in Maryland. For those of you keeping count at home, that's 4 sessions in a 10 day span. I almost feel like a footbagger again! Next week I'll be in Phoenix for work, so hopefully I can sneak in some playing while I'm there too, and eventually ease into spring by playing more than once a week.

Monday's session was short and we played on a super-slippery floor, but it was still a lot of fun. We played on a raquetball court, but it was so dusty that you had to wipe your feet off with water every run or so otherwise you would slide around. This made it really hard to do runs, so I mostly limited myself to short combos and challenges, and single tricks.

Highlights:

*GDLO-drifter-spinning butter-merkon, both sides (Reid challenge)
*Pixie front sole stall (James Randall challenge)
*Stepping front sole stall (James Randall challenge)
*A run with vortex bsos and weak GDLO. I dropped trying to bsos the GDLO.
*A run with GDLO bsos and weak vortex. I dropped trying to bsos the vortex.

The last two highlights in particular got me amped; my self-imposed challenge of GDLO and vortex all BS in OS looks very do-able. I also put in some token attempts at spinning mobius, and there's a visible light at the end of that tunnel too. If I work my double-spins and play on a normal surface, there's no reason why I won't be able to hit that.

I've been making good progress on my challenges these last few sessions. I've posted videos of a bunch of completed challenges in that thread, and am still open for new ones, especially ones that work my spins.

I'm hoping to get in one more session on Saturday or Friday before I leave for my trip on Sunday.

Props on getting my challenge with all the spins. Nice attempts on "the drill" I think you added a symp mirage though.

It's hard to say how many players there are in the DC area for several reasons. Due to illness, injury, school/work and the fact that winter is the offseason, we haven't been meeting up to play much lately. There are about 5 players in the DC/MD area who have freestyle shoes and would likely come out to play on a spring weekend if their schedule allowed. As for net, I think there's around 3 players in the area? Vince (yes, Bradley), Matt Evans, and I think Phil N are in the area. I'm counting Vince and Matt in both categories, so really there are only around 6 total players in the area. I am unaware of any net taking place during winter, and in terms of freestyle I am pretty sure Adrienne and myself are the only people playing regularly now. When it gets nicer I'm sure Matt Evans and Dan Shedd will play, though Dan is in law school so who knows how much time he'll have.
exudedex wrote:Nice attempts on "the drill" I think you added a symp mirage though.
Yeah, that was totally a brain-fart. The drill is so long I get confused the further I get along. I like it though, because it works a lot of different concepts and links on both sides. Given how much I am focusing on spins lately, it is easy to neglect other concepts, and the FTB drill helps keep some of the rust off of them. I think a good way for me to approach the FTB drill is by increments.

1. Hit half of FTB drill on my flipside. I still haven't done this. I've only done 8/12, whereas I've done 12/12 on strong.
2. Get both halves of FTB drill in one session.
3. Get as many contacts as I can of the drill, even if its out of order. Like, if I started on weak blizzard I might be able to get 16/24 of it done.
4. Hit the damn drill in its entirety.

As I mentioned in my challenge thread, the real benefit of the FTB drill lies in skooling it, and not actually hitting it. The path is worth more than the goal.

No footbag since Monday, but I have a good shred schedule for the next week. Saturday I'll play with Age, and then on Sunday I start a 10 day business trip to Phoenix and Denver. I don't think my schedule makes playing in Denver viable, but I will have a lot of time while in Phoenix, so I'm hoping to get in 2-4 sessions while I'm in Arizona. I'm looking forward to playing outside again, and also stoked to play with Josh again. He's gotten really good since I left. Hard to believe that was almost 3 years ago.

I would have worked out today, but I donated blood this morning, so I decided to take it easy. This was my 3rd donation since moving to DC a year ago. I think its a safe bet that I'll be donating regularly from now on, especially because I can do it during work hours.

I'm still up for challenges, especially ones that work my spins. I think next time I play I'll try for flip mantis.

Hey Ken,

first off, I assume that GDLO is gyro double leg over? Good work none the less. You seem like you continue to get more and more airy in your skills. I guess that means "light on your feet".

I think what your doing with these drills is awesome. And the fact that you put out so much footage is really amazing. I think more players could be doing this. Youtube is such a sick gift for us here at modified.

I hope you prosper with that FTB drill. I'm going to start on it now too if you don't mind. Give me something to work towards!!!

Thanks for the compliments and challenges guys. GDLO -smoke sounds like a good challenge. Ideally I'd like to step that up and hit it both sides or bsos, but lets see how hard it is on one side first.

Got in a session with Age on Saturday. We played on raquetball courts again, but thankfully they were a lot less slippery this time. I only really noticed the slipperiness when I switched to quantums, but that was only for a short bit of the session.

Age played really strong. Her foundation is coming along well. I spent most of the session just going for challenges from my challenge thread, and working on my spins in general. The most frustrating challenge was Tom's request for swirl war. The frustrating thing is that I'd already hit it earlier this month, but I hadn't hit it since it became an official challenge. I finally did manage it (video in my challenges thread), which was pretty satisfying. I also "re-hit" another old challenge just so I could get it on video.

Highlights:

*swirl war
*gyro clip x4 to blur bsos
*inspinning clipper x2
*spinning gyro mirage, and nearly double spinning osis in the sealing run. These are components I should work to build towards spinning mobius.

Video of the first 3 are in my challenge thread.

I also made good progress on the FTB drill. I think I could do the whole thing if I swapped out PSW for something easier, like blurry whirl or barfly. I'll post video later.

It's weird, because this is actually my stronger spin and stronger eggbeater, yet I'd been hitting it on the other side for about a year now. So is it really flip?

In exciting news, I leave my house in 10 minutes to embark on a 10 day trip out west. I'm particularly excited for the first 7 days in Arizona, cause I'll probably get to shred outside. I'm bringing my camera, but who knows how much I'll be able to update from the road.

My trip is going great so far. It's been blue skies and temps in the 70s and 80s every day I've been in Arizona. I've played footbag outdoors 3 times, and I've swum outdoors 4 times. I leave for Denver on Monday, and its projected to be in the 60s while I'm there. Back in DC it's apparently snowing, and temps are in the 20s and 30s. Hooray for well-timed trips!

In addition to enjoying a break from DC winter weather, I've also enjoyed taking a break from the internet. From the time I left my apartment in DC on Sunday morning until I arrived in Tucson on Friday night, I didn't go online once. It was refreshing to be offline all that time. And considering that my return to the internet was marked by this computer crashing and me losing a huge blog write-up...well, I wonder if maybe god is trying to tell me something.

The only real down point of my trip so far was today when my camera broke. Same problem as last time, though this time around I don't think I have a warranty. I will look into fixing it, but if its over $40 I think I may just buy a new camera which takes better video and isn't as fragile. Anyway, for the time being don't expect anymore video in my blog. :(

As I alluded earlier, I got in 3 shreds while in Phoenix. Super big props to Josh for setting up shreds, taking me to shreds, and even hooking me up with a sweet Munsterbag. If you ever make it out East, let me know so I can reciprocate.

On Monday and Friday I got in outdoor sessions with Josh at a nearby sports park. We spent the majority of those sessions just skooling concepts, as opposed to going for strings or anything. I would say I probably spent 40% of each session just working on my gyro clippers. On Wednesday night we got in a session with Josh, me, Mike Jauss, Conrad Rustad, and Blake, a new shredder from ASU. That session was more like an actual shred.

Highlights from all 3 sessions kinda blur together in my head. The things I remember from my game were mostly challenges I completed. Off the top of my head, here's what I remember.

Josh highlights:
*rev swirl-far symple swirl repeat
*dyno-far dyno repeat
*pdx whirl-ducking pdx torque
*gyro swirl off the foot. What made it cool though, is that the swirl wasn't symple. Crazy.
*blw-mobius

Ken highlights:
*GDLO-smoke, both sides
*Gyro clipper x14.
*A run with GDLO bsos, and weak vortex. Dropped on strong vortex.
*A run with vortex bsos, and a GDLO. Dropped trying to sauce gdlo.
*HPD first try.
*A very nice diving symp whirl.
*flip spinning clipper x7, new record
*pixie paradon-pdlo repeat

Here's a vid from my last shred in Maryland before this trip:

I'm gonna post now, cause I'm scared of losing all this in another crash.

Finally got back from my business trip out West. The weather was great, I got some good work done, met a lot of nice people, and got some footbag in. Still, it feels great to be home. 10 days away is a long time.

When I initially packed for the trip, I brought long underwear for the Denver portion, because I thought it might be cold while I was there. As it turned out, the day I landed in Denver was a new high for that point in March: 73 degrees out. The next two days I was there it also reached 70. Very nice surprise.

Given the excellent weather, I decided to get in an outdoor shred on Monday. The area around my hotel was pretty hilly, so I had trouble finding a good shred spot. I ended up just playing in a parking lot next to the hotel. While the spot kinda sucked for playing, it ended up being perfect from an exposure standpoint. But more on that later.

It was my first solo session in a while, so I decided to take advantage of that fact by skooling my spins the whole session. I set a bunch of spinning challenges for myself, and managed to get a bunch of them. As I've mentioned in my challenge thread, I'm skooling my basic spins on both sides and trying to combine it with my basic downtime tricks.

Highlights, in order of how stoked I was about them:

*gyro legover-drifter rpt
*spinning clipper-spinning osis rpt
*clipper dlo-spinning clipper rpt
*merkon-drifter-gyro clipper rpt
*gyro clipper-gyro mirage-drifter rpt

Halfway through the session, a tough-looking big guy with a shaved head and a leather jacket rolls up on a motorbike, dismounts, and starts walking my way. I expect him to say a variation of these three things:

1. Not bad, but can you do that with a soccer ball?
2. I used to do that in high school when we'd get stoned.
3. Give me your lunch money.

Instead, the guy tells me that he used to compete. Compete? As in footbag compete?! 8O As it turns out, the guy used to be a serious footbagger. We shake hands and he tells me he is Dan Chick, and that he used to play freestyle and net on the East Coast. He was active from 93-97, so we never overlapped at a tourney, but he had been to Funtastiks and knew people like Vince, Noah DuBreuil etc. How crazy is that? He tells me about a trick he used to do (like an i-o DATW bailed to eclipse), and I hit it shortly after he leaves. I do a short demo for him and his girlfriend, and then make plans to hang out the next night. But that's a whole nother blog post.

Here's a quick vid. It's the only video I shot of myself on this trip:

Got out of work early today, and it was too nice to pass up an outdoor session. Played solo for about 40 minutes and had a lot of fun. I printed out my challenges and spent almost the entire time just trying them. I hit a bunch, and made good progress on others. I'll try and hit them all again tomorrow on camera. Once I've hit a challenge, I think its a good idea to try and hit it again. While it feels good to hit a challenge for the first time, I think it helps my progress a lot more if I keep trying it even after I've hit it.

Highlights:
*rev swirl-far symple swirl-rev swirl. I want to drill this.
*Duck Clip > Spin Clip > Gyro Clip > Gyro Clip repeat. Hit this starting on both sides.
*Gyro Mirage> Toe Whirl > Spin Clip repeat. Hit both directions.
*Toe spinning clipper > ducking clipper > ducking pdx mirage [repeat] Also both directions.
*Toe Merkon > Toe Ss Drifter > Gyro Mirage. Both sides, and 5/6. I'll try and drill it tomorrow, but it's a weirdie.
* Gyro DLO > Toe Whirl > Spin Clip. Both sides, and close to sauce. Very do-able as a drill.

I was also close to ducking clipper-vortex repeat. I'm excited that my spins are getting good enough that I could get drills. I think I'll try for gdlo-whirl rpt tomorrow too.

I noticed in your gyro clipper clip that on your flip spinning you open up your arm, as opposed to your good side where you tuck your arm in. I wonder if if you tried to tuck your flip arm it would help flip spinning?

Thanks for the input Erik. Yeah, around the second session in Phoenix I started thinking about the same thing, and I started being more conscious about keeping my arm in on flip spins. It still feels a bit unnatural for me, but I think it will help me in the long run.

Got in an outdoor session with Age today. The weather was great, but I had a pretty rough session. I started off well, but then some guys started playing tackle football by us and the bad vibe they put off got into my head. Pretty much after every down they would get into heated arguments and threaten to kill each other, and eventually somebody got tackled so hard that EMS had to be called over, and they had to take the guy away on a stretcher. Definitely feel like the miasma polluted my mood.

Still managed some highlights though:

*rev. swirl-far symple swirl repeat.
*GDLO-toe whirl-spin clip-gyro mirage-toe whirl-spin clipper
*spinning whirl-spinning whirl
*spinning blender

I also re-hit a bunch of highlights from yesterday, and got some on film. While the session didn't feel like the most fun, I got a lot of spinning practice, and I did a good job of practicing my new flip spinning style, which should pay off in the future.

Gonna try and get in another session tomorrow with Vince and Age. My goal is to not try any challenges, and instead just focus on doing strings with as much spins in it as possible. The challenges are supposed to help me develop a better spinning game, but I don't want to lose sight of the bigger picture because of them.

Got in another outdoor shred with Age on Sunday. Age played really well and hit some challenges on tape, so look for that in her blog soon. I played alright. I'm in a weird transition phase with my game now. I used to be a shuffler with lots of dexes, and now I'm trying to become a spinner. Unfortunately, I'm at a point right now where I'm focusing so much on my spinning game that I'm losing my old style (which I'm fine with, cause its part of the plan), but my new style hasn't come in to replace it yet. So while my spinning is improving, and I can hit some big spinning tricks and combos, its not consistent yet. This makes my footbag sessions less fun than they used to be, but hopefully it will pay off in the long run. The way I see it, I pretty much got as much out of my old style as I ever will. Switching over to a spinning style will not only make for a good challenge, it will also hopefully prolong my career, since it should be easier on my body.

Highlights:

*sonic mirage.
*some decent looks at sonic torque
*DSC-pdx torque
*Flip DSC using the new "tucked-in arm" flip spinning
*spinning blender.

We filmed most of the session too, so if Age has time there might be a small vid coming your way.

Two random notes:

1. The more I think about it, the less likely it seems that I'll make it to the Boston Jam.
2. Set a new point record for a single play in Scrabble. Scored 110 points by bingoing with HUMILITY (the L was a blank). Ironic that I'm bragging about that word...maybe I should have made the blank a D.

It's my day off and the weather is nice, so I'm going to try for my 4th session in as many days. If I play I'm mostly just going to skool spins and drill a lot. Challenges are fun, but I still think my spinning foundation needs work.

Age: thank you so much for the video! I know how busy you are with school, so I really appreciate your time. I'm at work now, but I'll check it out when I get home.

Erik: sonic is like a double spin, but where the second spin is the opposite direction. So with a double spin you spin once, spot the bag, and spin again in the same direction. With sonic, you spin once, spot the bag, then spin in the opposite direction. I hit sonic (near) mirage at the 4:38 mark of the vid Age posted.

Had the day off from work yesterday and the weather was still nice, so I made it 4 days in a row playing outside. Nice.

It was a bit cooler than the weekend, and there were pretty regular gusts of wind, but it was still comfortably t-shirt and shorts weather. The forecast says spring isn't quite here, but I can tell its well on its way. I haven't seen any robins yet, but the college girls are already dressing like it's spring. :)

The session was dedicated almost exclusively to skooling my GDLOs and vortices. I'm happy to say I made some good progress on both sides. I really tried to keep these 3 things in mind for GDLO and vortex:

1. Set low, set straight.
2. Spin fast, especially on weak side.
3. Spin further than I think I need to. Or to put it another way, don't start the mirage dex too early.

For the most part I avoided challenges and just tried to hit both tricks as many times as possible on both sides. I think I hit flip vortex more times yesterday than I had in my entire career up until now.

Highlights, in order of how stoked I was about them:

*Strong spinning clipper x 11ish. New personal record.
*Flip vortex-pdx torque
*GDLO-legbeater bsos
*GDLO-toe whirl-spin clip-GDLO
*Flip spinning clipper x9ish. New personal record
*GDLO-atom smasher bsos.

The weather looks like it's gonna cool off this week with the exception of Wednesday, but I'm going to the Wizards-Hornets game that night, so I might not play again until Pittsburgh. I can't wait til it gets consistently nice out and I can play after work on weeknights.

Here's a vid from exactly a year ago. It's fun for me to see how dex-heavy my game was back then, compared to the spinning style I'm working on now.

The weather in DC has really been a roller coaster lately, but the good weather has been lining up real well with my weekends and days off. I got out of work a little early and snuck in a session before going to the Wizards-Hornets game (where I saw Chris Paul get 30 pts, 10 rebounds, and 13 assists!). This means that I've had outdoor sessions 5 out of the last 6 days. That's fantastic.

Despite having played so much recently, my legs felt fine. I credit this to my new spinning style. I hardly do any symposium tricks anymore, and I use very few sets. I'm hoping that this new, low-impact style will prolong my career by saving my knees/ankles/soles of my feet.

I split the session pretty evenly between normal spinning strings (to improve spins in general) and GDLO/vortex practice (to improve those 4 tricks specifically). It made for a nice balance where I didn't cool off too much, or get too frustrated with any one thing. I only knocked off one challenge from my formal list, but I hit some informal challenges I set for myself that day. Beyond that though, all this GDLO/vortex practice should help me knock off some more challenges in the next few sessions. The other positive is that I had a breakthrough with flip gyro clippers. The new "arm-in" spinning technique had helped all my flip spins except for gyro clips, which kept hitting my arm. Yesterday though, I got the hang of doing them "arm-in style" without hitting the arm. I really feel like flip spinning is finally coming along.

Highlights:

*reverse swirl-far symple swirl repeat, first try
*spinning osis-gyro clip-spin clip-gyro clip repeat, to gyro clip-pdlo-string
*Several contacts of spin clip-gyro clip rpt, and they felt easy.
*vortex-blur, both sides
*vortex-blurry whirl, first try! 8O

Based on the weather report and my schedule, I probably won't get to play again until Pittsburgh. I'm really excited for Pittsburgh. Beyond the fact that I'll get to see friends and play footbag, it officially marks the start of the footbag season!
