I find that bike blog I wanted to start SO scary to try and write in. The bike community can be REALLY hostile online, I don't know if I want to invite negativity from a huge crowd of people.
I will perhaps take a run at it after I have done my video part and the dust has settled on the worlds reaction to the video.
I have some good stories to tell though, so lets get on with it!
Gymnastics on Monday this week was pretty fun. My buddy Cyrus wasn't there so I was a little lonely but I made do. I practiced round off to back tuck on the tumble track (tight tramp thing) and once my confidence was up I asked one of the coaches what I had to do to get to the point of doing it on the sprung floor. He said to just practice getting the jump out of the roundoff clean and then have someone spot you and just go for it. I guess the spot part skipped my mind because my head said GO! and I just went and did it! It felt so cool! Total dream come true! I tumbled upside down on my hands, then back to my feet then sproinged up into a flip in the air, AS IF!
So I wound up hitting round off>back tuck several times on the sprung floor. They said my form with my arms was all wrong, but it was just so many things to be thinking about in one operation. I will get them way bigger and cleaner tomorrow at gymnastics.
It was the last session of this sorta shy/quiet/overweight Japanese guy that came out regularly, he was moving to Vancouver. He brought some Japanese candies as a present to give to Allen the instructor and to share with the class, I thought that was so nice of him! I chatted with him and gave him help on how to find a similar place in Vancouver, he seemed really grateful that I helped him out, that made me feel good, hehe.
Last weekend Pengpeng and I went tobogganing and it was lots of silly fun! A really crazy thing happened afterwards but Peng won't let me tell the story! haha (We got busted by the cops!)
On Friday after work I went and checked out the Toronto International Bike show. It was intimidating being blasted by so much marketing and egos, I just sorta bounced around looking at things that I wasn't the target market for. I saw a totally bored guy running the Accelerade tent, they had jugs and glasses so I asked if I could have a cup. He rolled his eyes and grudgingly forced out the speech he has probably had to say 800 times that day that he knows I don't give a shit about. I nod and listen and decide on grapefruit something and say thanks and walk off saying to myself 'mmm! Now I'm Accelerade-d!'
The BMX area was pretty loud and crazy, they had bleachers set up facing a gnarly street course that they were running comps on. They were doing heats of 4 riders at a time, each rider would session a bit and they'd take turns.
I watched for a while and eventually felt like wandering some more. The BMX tents were way too intimidating with crazy loud hip hop and hyper stylish people all in the way. Oh yeah, everyone in the BMX scene dresses all gay with tightpants like me. haha, apparently fashion matters alot when riding BMX.
A bit of magical serendipity came into play next.
So I for weeks I've been obsessing about the BMX/fixed hybrid tricks I want to be hitting and I've been drilling in my garage as best I can. The whole time having this thought that it'd be amazing if I could hook up with the Mississauga (next town over) BMX guys that I'd met at the skatepark and convince them to ride fixed with me so that I'd have people to push me and to look stylish with. A few of them had told me that they were interested in getting fixed gears but that was the last I'd heard of it, I figured the pull of the happening BMX scene (there are apparently ALOT of them into it) was too much to keep them from ever taking the plunge.
Well I was walking along behind the bleacher when I heard this guy shouting "HEEYYY!!! DUUUUDE!!HHHEEEYY" from the top of the bleacher. I figured he was shouting for someone else because who would shout for me?? Well it turns out it was one of the two guys that told me he wanted to get a fixed gear! I didn't fully recognize him at first but he said 'I met you at iceland skatepark!' and it all clicked together and I suddenly realized I had steered the multiverse once more and pulled him into my web.
We shouted up and down to each other until I decided to come up to where he was. We shook hands and reintroduced, his name is Hans. The story gets even sweeter at this point, he excitedly told me that about a week ago he had bought a fixed gear and that he'd started learning tricks!
I find this particularly exciting because I know that he is a skilled BMX rider, I've seen him RIP, so I can't wait to work with him to see where this can go. I needed this to happen, I have about a month and a half of time left to film for my part and I needed to meet these guys to really push me.
Now if only my new fork would arrive and the damn snow would let up. It keeps friggin snowing! This is the snowiest winter since like 1939 or something, whee!
I know why too, it's because it's my last Canadian winter for a long time so nature gave me a doozy with oodles of snow because I wanted to be reminded of the mega snow of my childhood. Yes, the world revolves around me.
I am 2 days into P90X, I decided it was time to go for it!
It is IN. TENSE.
I want to be so ripped! Fuck it! Let's do this!!!

That's a silly trick I hit today for fun. I just wanted to do it because it was possible.

Have I even mentioned the fact that I lost my job?
Yeah, I lost my job for no reason, just a hothead manager taking something unrelated out on me.
It's okay though because it has motivated me to get a REAL job, and by that I mean my first real engineering job. The obvious point of that is to gain some experience in engineering, and of course make a big pile of money.
The only reason I hadn't gotten an eng. job yet was because I didn't want to get stuck here with some job, ideally I'd pop off to germany in a month or two and then get my first real job. It is a combination of timing and logistics but it now doesn't make any sense for me to move to germany so soon as losing that job killed the pipeline to my bank account. It would have been a tight squeeze at the rate I was saving but it could have been just barely possible, but now it is impossible.
I am just going to play the cards as they come though, at this point it makes complete sense to just go ahead and get an entry level mechanical eng. job somewhere and maybe grow up a bit.
I have high hopes that my first plunge into adult type jobs will be a big motivator for me to pull all my shit together, I feel like I am SO close! I am doing WAY better at alot of the things in my life that I've struggled with and I am feeling strong. A job that allowed me to make REAL money (entry level positions are about $20/hr in my field) and gain experience that will make getting a job in Germany a thousand times easier. In retrospect, it may have been quite difficult to get a job as an inexperienced foreign english speaker so maybe this all makes lots of sense.
So then, what does this mean for my plans to move to Berlin? Ahh! Berlin! I OBSESS about Berlin every single day of my life, I have never been so in love with a city, it is SO many things I need right now.
The plan up till now was to move end of April, as in, in a month.
Losing my job two weeks ago took the wind out of the sails of my money ship. (I am on a metaphor spree, they will all be groaners and totally needless) The tight financial arrangement had no room for a stoppage in cashflow and here I am at a logjam of sorts. So since there was no room for a change in pace, and then a change happened this obviously means my moving will be delayed.
How long though?
It is so easy to say that I could just work there as long as feels right and then fuck off to Berlin but there is alot attached to that that can complicate it. A company sees an employee that they've trained as a valuabe asset and in general they want to hang on to something like that. I won't be signing any 1 year minimum contracts or anything, but I really don't know how long makes the most sense.
I will need several thousand dollars to be able to fly over and land with enough cash to stay rolling for a few months and still have some padding in savings. If I get a job within a few weeks (fingers crossed! (I will get further into what I am doing to get a job later)) it could take 2 - 4 months accumulate the amount of money I need. Where does that put us?
Summer, I guess.
Geez, I find this all sorta frustrating. But I guess it's not generally considered 'easy' to move your whole life to a different continent.
I really dread having to tell the Berlin guys and Jan that I am going to be even later getting to Berlin.
Sigh, it's all worth it, I want this so bad and I am going to get to Berlin eventually. If it is now or in a few months that doesn't matter in the big scheme of anything, this is my LIFE, a few months is sorta whatever.

I went and visited Kingston and it was really awesome.
I went and saw Against Me! with John Bagi and we had alot of fun. We ran up a crazy big tab on his buddies tab that had many many overpriced pitchers and pints. At the end of the night after we'd already left his buddy pays the tab and it was magically only $26 dollars! hahah
I only heard about this the next day, I thought it was a good punchline to a good night. I actually got so drunk that I don't even remember the walk home, then I retardedly didn't drink ANY water and then get this... more magic.. I had NO hangover the next day!! What the fuck??!?! None of that adds up, just like the tab.
Both of them were a bunch of good and none of the bad, sweet! I guess that probably means that all that beer converted to muscle instead of gut, right?
I went to a job fair with Pengpeng today. It was terrifying!
Peng looked SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CUTE in her little miss professional outfit! EEEEEeee!! TOO CUTE!! I gave her lots of hugs. I wore slacks and a dress shirt and tie and a casual blazer Peng got me a while back. It was fun playing dressup. I was too scared to talk to any of the job people, it was an insane gauntlet of people packed into a conference room at a hotel. I found the whole situation REALLY intimidating but Peng gave me courage and helped/forced me to go in and talk to some engineering companies and give them my new fancy resume.
I talked to a few and I liked the sounds of one of them, we'll see if that leads to anything.
My fancy new resume is due to the fact that I have been going in for daily half-hour sessions with this nice lady that works at the Job Center, a government run employment assistance workshop place. We took my embarrassing amateur loser resume from university and pounded it into shape over several renditions. I know have a kinda slick looking thing that I can shove out into the job market. The next step for me and Karen (my job lady) is for us to dive into job postings on all the magical places they have connections to. Whee!
Aw man, as much as I am going to save money... oooohhh wheee, it'll be fun to be able to spend a little. I am a consumer whore!
I just want bike parts, fuuuuck!

Sucks about Berlin though Tom, the GOOD news is that my friend Liam now has his liscence, so that means REGULAR OAKVILLE footbag sessions. Of course, when I say that, life will come into play and we will probably only make it every couple weeks, but you know...

ever thought of applying for jobs in berlin while still being in canada? of course you can't go to a job interview straight away, but at least you can already check out what the job market in your field looks like. try www.stepstone.de and www.zeit.de/jobs.
