I ended up getting very antsy after work yesterday, and the weather was nice, so I caved in and went out to play. Put in a few safeguards to slow me down, which helped: I left my speakers at home (no routine practice) and I wore a baggy shirt.

For the first hour of the session I played while holding my iPod, and pretty much just flowed tiltless to Daft Punk's "Alive 2007" album. The cable didn't get in the way too much, and the music kept me in a positive mindframe. Very good way to warm up slowly; I think I'll do this more often.

Ended up having a pretty laid back session, which is what I planned. I don't think I made the ankle any worse, but it also probably didn't make it any better either. I'm definitely taking today off from playing, and will make a point to get more sleep than usual, in an attempt to aid the healing process. I think ideally I should lay off footbag until Thursday afternoon, get in a session that's mostly routine practice, and then don't play again until competition on Saturday. I feel like my shin splints bothered me more than my ankle did yesterday.

I didn't play very hard yesterday, and I didn't film at all until the last half hour. So here are my limited highlights:

*Two bag reverse swirl
*Gyro clipper x11
*spin clip-spin clip-spin osis repeat

My best string on tape from yesterday:

I think pixie everything would be a good challenge for me. It'd be hard, but do-able, and would improve my flip pixies while also practicing all my basic downtime components.

Bought my bus tickets for NYFA jam, so I'm officially going. In other related good news:

1. My ankle feels way better already.
2. Two of my bigger sources of stress (both related to housing issues) may be resolved by the time I leave on Friday. It'd be sweet to be able to compete without these two things looming over me. Hell, if either gets resolved that'd still be a huge relief.

A nice run from tonight:

Ken, that seriously looked like my style lately. Spinning Legover out of Osis > Symp mirages.... Ducking clippers out of osis... and clipper > ss DLO. Sweet stuff.

Edit - oh yeah and pdx mirage > plo... which I'm trying to drop that one. I swear I'll do it 4 times in a 7 contact run.
Josh Gayhart ... keeping footbag tuff since 2002.

Sweetness; one down, one to go. 8) I'm excited to go to NYC this weekend with less stress now. If my other issue gets resolved before I leave, this weekend is going to feel like a reward for successfully making it through a very stressful time in my life.
Tripp wrote:Edit - oh yeah and pdx mirage > plo... which I'm trying to drop that one.
Yeah, one of my long-term challenges is to cut out strong side pdx mirage from my game completely. I feel like I'm doing pretty well with it. If it comes very late in a string because I'm tired, then fine. But yeah, I used to over-rely on it, and had to make a conscious effort to cut it out.

Taking Tuesday off from footbag and getting to bed early paid off; my ankle felt noticeably better and my legs felt fresh for Wednesday's shred. I did a pretty good job of warming up slowly, by mixing up tiltless strings with random fun stuff like knee and cloud kicks, and trying three bag juggling.

The main goal of the session was to practice routines, which went well. I did four routines, two which were dropless, but in all cases I felt like my pacing was pretty good and I knew my choreo. It was a good confidence-builder for the weekend; the routine feels ready. I'm excited to try it out under competition pressure in a couple days. Depending how things go in NYC, I will adjust my training regimen for Worlds. It's a delicate balance between practicing a routine enough that it's second nature, and burning out on it.

Shred was fun. Flip gyro tricks felt better for some reason, and strong zooming also was feeling strong. Took advantage of this to re-hit some old challenges of mine.

Highlights:
*vortex-dlo bsos
*gdlo- whirl -spin clip rpt
*spinning osis-mobius
*spinning osis-gdlo-smog

I'm gonna try and get in a light session tonight, then take off tomorrow so I'm fresh for comp on Saturday.

NYFA jam is tomorrow! Very pumped up for it. I'm hitting the road pretty shortly after work today, so I did most of my packing yesterday. Here's my packing checklist/to do list:

1. Shorts, socks, and jerseys
2. Charge phone and iPod
3. Put routine song onto thumbdrive
4. Wash footbags
5. Buy favorite protein bars (Clif Builder's)
6. G-Units!
7. Water bottle
8. Charge camera batteries
9. Bus confirmation number
10. Debit card
11. Metro card
12. Ankle brace (just in case)

The other bit of preparation I did was playing footbag outside. Most of my practice over the last month has been at my indoor spot, because it's air conditioned and I can hear my music well. The NYFA jam, however, is going to be outside, and the forecast looks hot and humid. I figured it might not hurt for me to get some practice playing in muggy conditions, and DC was certainly obliging. I started playing after 8 pm, and the sun was already mostly down. That didn't stop me from gushing sweat the whole time. It was nasty out. I purposely left my camera at home, cause I knew I wouldn't have much daylight and couldn't afford to waste time filming. I also didn't plan on hitting anything video worthy; I mostly just wanted to stretch out the footbag muscles and work on stamina. I feel like having a camera makes me want to hit links or hard tricks, when I should really be focussing on string length and just dialing the crap out of basic spinning tricks.

Anyway, I was happy with how I played. My ankle has made remarkable progress over the last four days. It no longer feels stiff, but it feels like it tires out quickly. But yeah, it's about 90% now, which should get me through the weekend. I'll probably take a couple days off after NY to let it get back to 100%. My neck on the other hand, seems to have taken a step back in the healing process. I guess if I had to pick between my ankle and my neck, I'd choose my ankle healing faster. Anyway, I'm taking today off from playing, so I don't see either of my injuries hampering my ability to compete well this weekend.

hey, i messed my neck up about 3 years ago.. had to go to emergency room.. pinched nerve/muscle spasm.. couldn't even get good deep breaths in without shooting pain. To this day, it really is constantly in danger of recurring. Therefore, I have a series of stretches that I spend time on before/after every session, at the start of any activity, and that I do each morning too. I also have a strict cycle of replacing my pillow that I sleep on - worn out pillow is a common contributor to neck issues of many types.

all that to say this.. check that you have a good pillow that is right for your sleeping style, and look up "neck stretches" and just get in the habit of doing them. It's fast/easy to do, and believe me, you don't want your neck to become like mine did. It was horrible

How can tomorrow be July already, when it feels like May was just yesterday? You know how in old movies, they sometimes marked the passage of time by showing a calendar on the wall whose pages just fly off of it? June felt like that.

The good news is that I had a great time at NYFA jam this weekend. The bad news is that my routine went horridly. But really, that was two minutes worth of the weekend, and it won't matter in the grand scheme of things. It does show me, however, that I need to skool it a lot more before Worlds. Three weeks. Deep breath.

Considering how few tournaments I'll be going to this year, I'm gonna savor this write-up, and do one of my patented super-long entries with lots of details nobody cares about. Enjoy the ride.

I packed for the trip on Thursday night, and couldn't concentrate while I was at work on Friday. I dash home, re-check my bags, then metro up to Maryland to catch a ride with Vince and his friend Dylan. The first part of the trip doesn't go so well, as we catch traffic and take a couple wrong turns. Things take a turn for the better though, when I learn that Dylan used to live in Brooklyn, and knows the route (and shortcuts) like the back of his hand. In a huge stroke of luck, it turns out he used to live on the same street as Stan S, with whom I'm staying. Score!

Vince and Dylan drop me off at Stan's place. I dump my stuff off and we head out to a local Australian bar which is nice and laid back. Seeing the selection of beers reminded me of my trip to Australia: James Boags, Cascade, Tooheys (which I initially confused with Tui, which was a cheap NZ beer that I liked), and Steinlager (shitty NZ beer). Catching up with Stan over a good beer relaxes me, and somewhere halfway through the pint I feel the workweek wash away, and the feeling of a tourney start to sink in.

Saturday.

I wake up feeling pretty spry. Neck/shoulders still feel like crap, but my ankle is good to go, and I'm not tired. We get some omellettes at a Mexican place for breakfast, and already I'm planning my day around footbag: I consciously avoid the hot peppers and eat potatos in an attempt to give me better energy for the day. We get to the event site no problem, and I make the rounds greeting old friends. Daryl Genz showing up was a nice surprise; hadn't seen him since Worlds 07.

The first Open event of the day was routines, which were scheduled for 1 pm. When I got to the site though, Barrett tells me we're doing them at 12:30, so I warm up early. Right when intermediate circle ends though, it's announced that there's going to be an intermediate routine competition?!? This pushes back Open routines by about 40 minutes, which may not seem like much, but it was blazing hot out and my ankle wasn't in the mood to warm up, cool down, warm up again. I dealt with this problem by playing through the entire day straight, since competition ended up taking the entire day and came in irregular spurts.

I didn't watch any of the routines before me, since I needed to stay warm and get psyched up. When I stepped out into the competing area, I felt good. My song starts, and I drop my fourth trick. I feel more surprised than disappointed, and there's actually a part of me that feels liberated. Now that I've dropped, there's no pressure at all on for dropless. I kinda expected I'd finish with one or two drops max, but about a 40 seconds into the routine I drop again, and my choreo (and mental game) are thrown. I ended up dropping five times. Five! I half consider abandoning my routine in the middle because I'm so disappointed, but there's a big crowd watching and I don't want to disappoint them. I force myself to finish, bow to the crowd, and get out of sight before I find a bench to sit on and say "fuck" repeatedly.

Thankfully, I got Waylon to film the routine for me, and when I watched it again later I realized it wasn't as bad as I thought. In retrospect, all of my drops were careless, lazy drops. It wasn't like I was dropping because I was tired, or because the routine was too hard. While five drops was a disaster, it also felt like a fluke that I should be able to fix. So why did I do so badly? I'm not 100% sure. My body definitely doesn't deserve the blame; I think my mental game just wasn't entirely there. There were a couple things on my mind that I should have shut out, and when I didn't, the drops just snowballed. While I was bummed about my NYFA routine, I also am optimistic that I'll do much better at Worlds.

After seething for five minutes, I got my head back together. I told myself that routines were over, and that the most productive thing I could do would be to focus my anger and disappointment and use it to destroy the remaining events. All day we had good crowds, and part of me felt like I owed it to them to play well in the other events, given how crappy I played during my routine. This turned out to be a good motivating strategy for me. As the events got dragged out and I felt my energy waning, I'd just remind myself how shit my routine was, and it got me fired up to play well.

I don't remember circle comp too clearly. What stuck with me the most was that at one point the DJ played "Feel Good, Inc" by the Gorillaz, which is when I played my best. I hit ducking pdx torque, WHAT?!?, and Your Mom, which I thought were pretty good tricks to throw in competition. I also remember doing a lot more shuffle than I planned. I was hoping to use the new spinning style in competition, but in both rounds Ben Cooke (good spinner) was in my pool, so I ended up leaning on my old shuffle style more than I would have liked. Given that Circle was only 2 rounds, that meant I only did 12 runs. I think I was really happy with about three of them, and I had another three or four which felt like wasted turns, and the rest were average. Not my best showing, but I was overall pretty happy with it. It definitely got rid of some of the bad taste that was left after my routine.

I'll finish this up later. For now I'll leave you with a sick run from Jon Schneider:

NYFA write-up continued

Here's a video John Goode made of the NYFA jam, including parts of circle finals:

After circle ended, I felt better. While I screwed up routines, at least I performed well in the other marquee event. Watching John's vid, I wasn't thrilled to see so many paradox mirages, but it was in competition and given my routine disaster, my desire to play it safe was understandable. Overall I was happy with how I played in Circle.

The next event up was Sick 3. To tell the truth, this was the event I was least interested in doing, but I wanted to stay warm for request comp, and I also viewed it as another chance to redeem myself in front of the crowd. I hadn't prepared any Sick 3s ahead of time, but I figured I could pull something off with something ending in dlo to something big starting with pixie. I wanted to do something new though, so on the sidelines I practiced ewalk-blurry whirl-mullet, which was a combo I'd never hit before. The way the comp was run, we were allowed to try three combos, which we announced before we did them, and had three tries for each combo. So the shortest turn for a competitor would be three tries, and the longest would be nine. That's too many tries, in my opinion, but we were able to build and hold some big spectator crowds, so I guess the audience didn't mind.

I snuck a few peeks at other people's combos before it was my turn to go up. I saw Nate trying for vertigo-void-pdx torque, which I thought was crazy. I saw Pete hit surge-smoke-pdx torque (which ended up winning second place). For the most part though I focused on practicing my combos and staying warm. When I got up, I announced my first combo was ewalk-blw-mullet, and I ended up hitting it first or second try. With the pressure off, I announced my second combo would be fog-darkwalk-blurry torque. I wasn't able to hit it in 3 tries, which really surprised me. I therefore decided to make my third combo similar, but more interesting, by going for flurry-darkwalk-blurry torque. I ended up getting it on my second or third try, which was good for building up tension in the crowd. I was just happy that I hit two pretty cool Sick 3s in competition.

The final event was request contest. Other than routines, this was the event I was most excited about. I first saw request at Worlds last year, and thought it was super cool. I competed in it at NYJ, but I got knocked out early because my zooming and fairy sets were unreliable then. This time I was determined to do better than at NYJ. By this point in the afternoon, it was around 4 pm, which meant I had been competing for over four hours. That's both physically and mentally draining. As competition began, I told myself that I only had a little bit more to go before comp was over, and that I only needed to hit two tricks at a time. I also thought about my routine, and the thought of it gave me a surge of energy and determination to crush request.

We got some of our best crowds of the afternoon with request contest. It was an easy concept for the crowd to grasp: everybody has to hit the same combo every round, or be knocked out. Two tries. The very first combo announced was ATW-spinning toe, or flying clipper-squeeze. I was surprised by how many people got knocked out by this one. Most people chose the first option, but I guess toe-spinning threw them off. Flying clipper to squeeze probably intimidated some, because fliers are so rare these days, as are squeezes.

For most of the rounds, I tried to either hit the combo as a drill, or link both options into a single combo. So in the first round I hit ATW-spinning toe-flying clipper-squeeze. In the next round, the combo was legover to drifter, so I hit that repeat. Same with blizzard-paradon. On a couple occasions I needed my second try to hit a combo, which was exciting. Spinning clipper-reverse swirl was one, and spinning osis-inspinning osis was the other. I ended up winning on something like barfly-pdx egg, but we had such a good crowd going at that point, I decided to hit a couple more rounds. The next was fog-legbeater or blw-psw. I hit blw-psw first try, then I hit fog-leg-blw and had the psw off my foot. The next round though was two combos I suck at. The one I tried was sumo-smog, and to my credit I did hit sumo, but couldn't smog out. I took a bow and waved to the crowd, then called it a day in terms of shred. I hadn't been this exhausted playing footbag since NYJ.

I threw on some shorts and changed to skate shoes, which was a relief for my feet. I sat around for a while and watched people play, and then I joined in on some foursquare games. It was a real treat to play against Daryl again. Foursquare was a blast. I didn't play strategically (ie, getting people out in front of me and scoring points), but instead just tried to get people out with random snakes, psych outs, etc. It didn't matter if they were in squares below or above me, I just wanted to mess with people. After foursquare I watched some net, and then eventually went back to Bruce's place. A shower and a beer later, and I felt human again.

The players party was at Barrett's place, which would have been fine except the L was broken, so it was a pain to get there. When we got there I found out that I swept all four events, which meant I made some money and got first pick of the prizes. The prizes were pretty sweet, so thank you again to everybody who sponsored. I ended up picking:

*A green, mesh kolo shirt
*A heavy footfighter bag that I like already
*Three juggling balls from FreedomFootbags (I won three last year too, so now I have a set of six)
*A shirt from last year's event. I loved my one from last year, but it shrunk a bit and had a stain I couldn't get off. So this year I picked a size bigger.

I liked this year's trophies too. Vince ended up taking them back to DC for me, but when I get them back I'll make a video of them. They kind of reminded me of bento boxes.

After awards we just chilled out.

NYFA Jam: Sunday

Since Saturday night was so laid back, I made it a point to get up early so I could play with Pete Bowler before his bus left. It was great weather out again, but a little hot. I didn't use sunblock either day, so I ended up getting a pretty bad suntan in the shape of an NBA jersey.

Playing two man with Pete was tiring, but I thought we both played well. We both hit big apple, which is something everybody should do when they play in NYC. At some point Pete hit flux-mobius, which I thought was super cool. After a bit other people started trickling in. It was a refreshing change to play just for fun and not worry about comp.

Here's some NYFA runs from Sunday:

It was so hot out I had to periodically go into department stores to lower my body temperature, but on the positive side there was a kickass old-time band that gave us excellent music the whole time. At one point I remember they played Minnie the Moocher. Maybe the best music I've ever heard at Union Square.

After shred we went off to eat. We couldn't find a place that would seat all of us, so I ended up eating with Nate and Waylon. It's really pretty cool that through footbag I've made friends who are 11 years younger and older than me. After food we all said goodbyes, which didn't feel sad this time. Maybe I was just too physically exhausted. I hadn't pushed my body this hard since NYJ half a year ago.

Thanks again to NYFA for throwing this, the sponsors for supporting it, and Vince for helping things run so smoothly. It was great seeing everybody again and shredding. See you next year!

Given the fact that there were no girls at the party, I could have done a lot worse.

I'm falling a bit behind in my blogging. After NYFA jam, I took off three full days to let my body recover. The ankle is for all intents and purposes healed, though my neck is still a bit stiff. Thursday night I got in a solid session. I started off with some consecutives, then I played for fun, and I finished up by doing some routine practice. Routines went OK, but not great. Not sure if it was that my body was still recovering, or that I hadn't done routine practice in about a week, or if my confidence was shaken based on how badly I did at NYFA jam. But the best I could manage was a couple 2 drop routines. Hopefully I'll get back some consistency as I skool it over the next couple weeks. As I write this today, I am about two weeks away from getting on the plane for Worlds.

Shredwise I had a lot of fun. I messed around with drifter to spinning, and also with gyro swirls.

Highlights:

*Gyro reverse swirl. New trick.
*Gyro swirl bsos. Both sides were new for me today.

I was also stoked to hit this Sick 3:

On Friday I rented a UHaul and spent the day moving my roommate's and my stuff into our new place. I also bought and moved a bed, so by the end of the day I was exhausted. On Saturday I got in a solo session, but my indoor spot was locked due to the holiday weekend. I had some good moments, but I also got frustrated a ton. My mental game was overall really shitty. It was one of those sessions where nothing seems to work right; my camera was shaking in the wind, my ipod's controls weren't working, and even the jersey I wore was fucking things up. That's why I don't wear that jersey at tournaments.

Despite all that, I did eke out a couple highlights:

*gyro clipper x14, ties my record
*Pixie ss dlo x2

The other bit of good news is that during the process of moving, I found my old Phoenix Suns themed Waylon bag, which I had misplaced several months ago. Very happy about that. :)

Celebrated the 4th of July by drinking with a bunch of old coworkers and watching the fireworks from a rooftop. Woke up late on Sunday with a bit of a hangover, but after some errands and Wii bowling I felt ready to shred.

My indoor spot was again closed, but at least this time I didn't put myself through the pain of trying to do routines outdoors. Instead I just played for fun and went for a bunch of stuff I don't normally do, including nuclear sets. This was both good and bad. It was good because it made for a more fun session, and after my horrid session on Saturday I needed for footbag to be fun again. It was bad in the sense that playing with nuke sets and HPDs does nothing to prepare me for Worlds. Beyond that, it also opens me up to injuries that I shouldn't be risking. For example: at one point I hit HPD-superfly. While I had fun hitting this new link, it wasn't great for my right knee, and indeed, it felt a little weak today.

All things considered though, I think it was worth it to play for fun. With less than two weeks to go before I board the plane for Berlin though, I'm gonna make a point to be more careful with my training. No more whirling sets or big symp moves on that leg, and I'm also going to increase the amount of sleep I get every night, and decrease my alcohol intake.

Sunday highlights:

*Flurry bsos with a mobius. Flip flurries felt deeper than usual for some reason.
*blurry drifter-mobius
*HPD-superfly-pdx torque
*Ten unique spins
*blurry whirl-matador bsos

And a run:

Thanks Asmus.

Been playing a ton lately. Given the fact that I'll be in Germany in less than two weeks though, I feel like I need to get serious and pack in as much training as I can manage. I'm trying to be smart about it though, by doing stuff like shortening my sessions, getting more sleep each night, and reducing my alcohol consumption. I've also started studying film of the dropless run-throughs I've done of my Worlds routine.

On Monday I got in a solid session. It was nice to play in my indoor classroom spot again, since it makes filming and routine practice so much easier. The goal for this week's sessions is to warm up with shred, do 3-4 routines, and finish the sessions early. I did a good job of this on Monday, as I had fun playing with double spins, and then moved on to routines. I ended up doing 5 routines total, and though none were dropless, I felt like they were getting more solid. It was good for my confidence.
Shredwise, I was happy to regain my double-spinning ability. For the last few months or so I've really felt like I lost it, but for some reason it came back to me yesterday. I think my problem was that I was rushing the first spin. The first spin in a double-spin should feel close to normal speed (just a touch faster), and then the second spin is a lot faster. When I tried making the first spin too fast, I found it hard to get the acceleration for the second spin. By readjusting my speed on both spins, double-spinning felt a lot easier and more reliable.

Highlights:

*Midstring DSC-pdlo
*Midstring double spinning osis
*Spinning merkon
*blw to whirl with 2 bags

Probably my favorite run from Monday:

Unfortunately, I won't be attending USO this year. :( Between the hecticness of my move, the money I'm dropping on Worlds, and coordinating vacation time it just wasn't in the cards. As it is I feel lucky that I'm even able to make it to Worlds.

Thanks for the kind words about my game. I actually haven't been feeling particularly stoked on my shred lately, but I do feel like maybe spinning is finally starting to get easier for me. Due to a bunch of different reasons, I've been mostly solo shredding for a while, and it can be tough to keep your motivation up when you do that. Routine practice has also been eating up a chunk of my energy and creativity, but hopefully that will pay off at Worlds. 10 days from now my suitcase will be packed for the next day's flight. Wow.

Tuesday I had trouble motivating myself to play; my body just wasn't feeling it. Still, with Worlds so close I didn't feel like I could afford to not practice my routine. I played just enough to get warm, and then I did three routines. All three felt very strong; I didn't tire out in the middle and I hit most of my cues. The first was a single drop, followed by two dropless. Big confidence booster for my routines. I hit a mantis and then called it an early night.

In honor of Evan posting in my blog, I'm picking this run from Tuesday to highlight:

Got in a good training session on Wednesday. My plan for all my sessions this week is the same: warm up enough to do routines, do 3-5 routines, then call it an early day. I felt like my shred was better on Wed than on Tues, but my routines were a bit worse. Everything felt pretty solid though.

I ended up doing four routines, one which was dropless. I had another one where I lost control and kicked the bag, and it landed on top of a desk. It was near enough to me that if the desk wasn't there, I might have been able to recover. But really, that's still sort of a drop anyway. The two key things I need to keep in mind when I do routines are:

1. Stick to the plan. No improvising.
2. Breathe. If I drop and pick the bag up, breathe. When I pause on a cue, breathe. Inhale. Exhale. Repeat.

I just realized that "routines" anagrams to "tournies." Cool.

Shred highlights:

*8 flip spinning clippers
*pdx whirl-spin osis-pdx whirl-gyro osis- repeat
*blurry drifter-gdlo
*ewalk- tomahawk bsos

Wednesday marked my fifth day in a row playing, and was also my sixth session in the last seven days. While I'm happy I've been taking my training seriously, I also don't want to overdo it, so I took Thursday off from footbag.
