This is a good topic... arms are important. When i was starting to kick I use to watch Ahren germans arms in raw shred... They were so stabalized, it made his whole style seem like the best. hands out flat with control of your fingers.

Some peoples hands are all curled up and contorted it looks weird.. remember that bad guy in Robocop who gets that acid shit on him toward the end, right before getting run over by the chick cop (murphy's partner).. That second when he makes eye contact with her before she runs him over.. To me thats what it looks like to have bad hands and arms... almost.

Look at professional sports.. Look at the critics they must endure.. People saying they strait up suck!... Even though thier talents are unbeleiveable! Ive hear people say they HATE michael jordon! That the lakers suck etc.. If only we were so popular to be hated... Negative feedback is something we are going to have to deal with if the sport is going anywhere.

I really hate how my hands curl up as eric described. It looks really unnatural. I hope I'll be able to fix that soon.

1. Im still angry at Sunil for beating me, Ahren, and Tu in WWF Smackdown, even when the 3 of us teamed up on him. Fucking Rikishi!

2. Rick Fox is a jerk.
3. When things go bad for the lakers, Shaq and Kobe just whine about their teammates.
4. The Kings beat them in the Western Conference finals last year. They even changed the rule about video replays for this season, because there were so many complaints about Samaki Walker`s 3 pointer counting.
5. Shaq is boring to watch. 10 years ago he hustled, did cool shit. Now its just back up back up back up slam. He should make a beeping noise when he plays.
6. When the lakers won last year they acted like they were the shit. Shaq even said: `Im not afraid of the sacramento queens.` I think some were even deluded enough to think they deserved to make the finals.
7. And if you have a problem with any of this Eric, I will have to whup your ass at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 at worlds.

Do you breath when you are kicking? Ellis mentioned that some people tend to hold their breath somewhat when they are concentrating during a string. Holding your breath can only cause your body and arms to tense up. Just a suggestion.

i agree dat... you're gonna be good. listen to the other shredders dat, you rock!

edit: god damnit...

Ah, so arms. I have believed that arms were important ever since watching Lon Smith at CSS3. When he spun he pulled his arms closer to himself. I have been taking differnt dance classes for 4 semesters now and you will never ever find a professional dancer who doesnt use their arms. Even if only their legs were being filmed, the dancer would still use exact arm positions to maintain balance and such. Your arms are connected, not just at the shoulder but at the brain. Dance has had thousands of years to be refined, I think if we want to get better at footbag, it would be more efficient to learn techniques from other diciplines, ie dance, martial arts, gymnastics, whatever... as much as we can and apply it to footbag. Obviously this isn't a substitute for footbag but a supliment.

Edit 2: ......

I just remembered seeing this clip of JAmes Risden do this crazy ass run... then an osis, then right from the osis into blurry drifter > all this insane stuff. It reminded me of you dat. The way he does his osis, its more like a gyro clipper but with a low set. YES DATs the shiot.

C-Fan, i dont really like shaq either, but he must have done something right to be in the NBA. And yea, he hasn't been hustling lately, but he just came off an injury. Give him a break.. The all star game was what he needed. Hes getting back into better shape and playing better. This is a huge thing problem that the rest of the NBA Coaches are going to have to face as they loom toward the playoffs. Becoming a strategical obstacle should earn him respect, even if you dont like his style. I admit, he gets hell of boring watchin him but i still respect him.

If you want to bring that cheap Doctor Doom air combo im down, but I dont know if im going to worlds :(

You raise a vaild point Eric. When is it okay to talk freely about people's style? Obviously if I see a the'd move in a circle I'll call it out but that it very different from saying so-and-so has a shitty style on a public forum. I think there is too much shit talking on this list. Perhaps a freestyle mag is more appropriate for criticism.

Just a few thoughts

yeah but a forum where you were only allowed to say nice things would get boring fast.
Style is a very subjective thing, I really think it's OK for people NOT TO LIKE someone's style!! I'm not going to get into the whole freedom of speech thing, but lighten up people, it's a footbag forum! *FORUM*: where people come to talk (debate?) not just to flatter each other :)

well max, you used to have one of the worste style's on earth, but everybody kept on telling you (including me) and as a result you got much better.
anyway it is better to tell it people when they are actually in front of you than through a forum.

I just think it fucked up to talk shit about someone's style when they don't participate on this forum.
I speculate the reason more pros aren't here is because there's a bunch of shit talking going on.
It's way too easy to criticize someone behind the anonimity of the forum.

Lets back up for a second, here's what seems to have started Alex off:
Liam wrote:

I hear that, Zerbe. Spazziness can make footbag look real ugly. It's hard to avoid though, for most people, as the arms like to mimic the legs. Ever seen Chad's cute little hand double dexing when he hits scorpion's tail sometimes?
Man, I remember first seeing Sunil shredding. He had some awful arm spazzing... particularly a couple of years ago (anyone remember his quantum eggbeater from the CSS2 video? yowza :)). His arm spazzing really put me off watching him. But yeah, it's not as bad nowadays.

Liam out.
He had some awful arm spazzing, Past tense, referring to his arm movement as it was in a previous form before it became what it is at present. Liam just made an observation about Sunil's arm movement (based on footage from several years ago I might add, and I'm sure everyone would agree that they themselves are better now compared to how they were in the past) nowhere did he say that Sunil's style sucked. He was merely backing up your comment on uncontrolled arm movements looking spazzy (that's not a word but you get the point) and you've jumped down his throat.

This was a thread about arm movements, Liam made an observation on sunil's arm movements, and some how it's been turned into a "Don't say bad things about a persons style" thread, all I have to say is "what the fuck"? Where was there any talking shit about anyones style in this thread (apart from Grischa referrring to max's old style :P ), go back and have a good read ...

Ok back on the topic, arms definitely have a major impact in term of the mechanics of performing a move (building momentum, balancing/stability etc). They do contribute to a persons style, but I don't think they necessarily make or break a persons style (unless they really are all over the place and incoherent), and thus I think commenting on a persons arm movements (or something else like their shoes, shred attire, or their physical appearance) shouldn't be misconstrued as an attack on their overall shred style.

And for the record I'm too busy being confused by Sunil's blistering leg speed to be worried if his arms happen to throw in a random spaz :D

I must apoligize to Liam.
I really wasn't talking about his comment specifiaclly in some of the comments I made. I just think, and I know I'm not alone, that there a wee bit too much shit talking on this list.
I'm sure Liam is a really cool guy and meant no disrespect toward to Sunil.

So what's up with you southern hemi folks, are you going to Prague???

You gotta make it.
