All I'm saying is a little innovation would be nice to see more widespread. No need to tell me to QUIT and to call me an old fogey. There are other possibilities for being creative than unusual surfaces stalls. Do what you want. That's what I do.

Very true! I hope you didn't take those attacks personaly. Somehow shots and jabs end up in my posts but I am, in theory, attacking the issue and not a person.

I am certainly not anti innovation, I am just also pro traditionalizm(although somewhat hypocritical because I've been known to self serve). My enjoyment of repeating blurry whirls may change when I have been around for more than 4 years, but I hope that isn't the case... 4 years?!!? time sure does fly!

I HATE THE MONOTONY OF FOOTBAG!

Being a farely new player in this sport, i quickly realized how boring alot of the shred most people use really is. It seems like i am one of the only people who actually freestyles using all different surfaces on my feet. I hate how mostly all tricks that people do are either from toe or clipper, its so kintu.
This is why when i enter in the sick competitions i tried to use unique tricks that most people do not use, which is why i placed high in both. I eventually want to be able to do runs with only insides and dragons rather than toe and clipper....but that may take a while

Seriously though, more people should do this! People should stop doing the same tricks and show some uniqueness, or else footbag will start to become boring imo.

EDIT: after posting this i just hit symp inside bubba and spinning lap>inside>hopover>flapper drop

I've been using symple to break up my runs and throw in a bit of originality. It was originally a means to an end - a platform to help learn other tricks, but now i just dig symple atw's and legovers etc. I don't think you really need to be that innovative to be creative there are a lot of moves that have kind of fallen by the way side and can be revived with some creative links.
I don't really like to assume what others think in this sort of way, but I think most footbaggers find what they enjoy doing move wise and follow it, its just that most people like shuffle, and the guiltless/genuine standard moves so much, and there is so much to learn to be able to do it well it leaves little time for originality. I'm unconvinced this the product of any external pressure - such as competition rules or peer pressure - which obviously contribute to the situation, but certainly are not its sole causes, and certainly aren't problems to be solved - they will always shape the way people play - but only as far people let themselves be shaped. I.E you're free to do what you want.

yeah I think the point about competitions is silly - Janis if you want to organise your own competition where unusual things are more taken into account than go ahead. I think the popular aspects of freestyle are more common because more people like them (duh). If people wanted to do really hard head stall moves they would. I really don't feel like I am forced to get good at any specific move - the moves I am good at, I am good at because I either wanted to be good at them or because they are suited to my game. I understand that these days with so many footbag videos out there, things can get monotonous and more variety is appreciated by some people (probably most people) but I hardly think it is accurate to suggest that people are in any way forced into getting good at particular moves and not others. If somebody puts out a video with a 6 add move ending with a head stall I will go nuts with props for that person and if they hit something like that in a sick 1 comp I can't imagine it not winning. I just have no desire to hit such a move.

what you do in your shred is completely up to you, I'm not going to tell anyone what they should have in their shred, that's entirely up to them. The topic was originally about freestyle being "free". It seems there are some people out there who think that a head stall is not footbag, this just reinforces my earlier points about the lack of creativity. I really couldn't care less about the self-righteous remarks about what is and isn't footbag, as I will continue to do the moves I enjoy.

to me fotbag , or at least the all the videos i see is liike listing to steve vai play. its really skillful but after i song it all blends together. the ay more simple things is what stays in your head. their should be a topic section about new moves. and not topics about "is this a move. how many videos have you seen where break dance move been combined or others things. i have a move i never have seen. the cartwheel Pendulum. just do a pendulum and folllow through in to a cartwheel. i know that it wont "flow" into shred, but see how many people wil drop their jaw.

lots of good posts...

I think freestyle is as free as the styler. There are no real rules or limits besides what we choose to impose on ourselves, and physics.

To those displeased with the monotony of footbag, I have good news; the ability to change that is in your hands. Learn some messed up, weird tricks, and throw them in your strings. If you make it look good, others will notice it, and some will want to include that kind of weirdness in their own games.

keep it weird!

on a more serious note. i think right now footbag is at a more accessible point than it would if it were to evolve further with "weird" stalls and components. as in, i think if the general trend of footbaggers were too move towards more difficult stalls midstring and setting of more varied places, it might look less professional sport and more stoner dancing. though there are a lot of really difficult components that everyone can appreciate and can be thrown in loosely with generic shred, which is a combination that i think works, and should be employed more widely.
