I used to do it when I kicked with my left (flipside) foot when I was learning to kick. Now it has completely gone away. I think you do it when your muscles aren't developed enough yet to feel comfortable/stable when kicking with that leg.

It's definately linked to what you're doing with your legs. I don't think it's about what you feel comfortable with, although it would exacerbate it. I have monkey claw all the time while shredding, but I'm extremely comfortable with my strongside, and fairly comfortable with flipside. I notice it even more while doing tricks like torque/frigidosis etc. I'm not comfrotable with those tricks and my arm and hand makes the same motion as my leg in that case. I guess the brain is sending the messages out wrong, or I'm concentrating too much on the movement so it's going to arm and leg. Dunno. But my usual monkey claw is just there... maybe a remnent of not so comfortable times?
