The 2007 US Open Footbag Championships July 6-8
Sole Purpose is busy as usual gearing up for the 2007 Open, it's shaping up to be another great event! A few updates;
The again will be all six freestyle events. This includes:
Rippin' Run
Sick One
Sick Three
Routines
Shred 30
Circle
The way we are formatting the competition schedule for this year is tentatively this;
Friday:
Location: Pioneer Square, downtown Portland
Demos at Pioneer Square, registration all day
Saturday:
Location: Willamette Park, just south of downtown (very beautiful park on the waterfront). This is the day that freestyle and net are in the same location.
Competition begins, as last year, one round for specific events.
That evening there will be a player's party/cook out on site, with another new surprise event in the works (I think players are going to really dig it)
Sunday:
Location: Pioneer Square.
Finals, award ceremony.
There will be some crash pad locations again, as well as a host hotel, more on that soon.
There will be more information to come of course, we look forward to seeing everyone out here, and crowning the 2007 US Champion!

I just talked with Nasty Nate and it sounds like he's down to come up to Portland this Sunday with me (5/20). I'm way stoked on the Pioneer Square shred sessions. I told my mom that I was planning on going there. Strange, she knew exactly what I was talking about since she walked by the sessions one sunday afternoon. I don't know of any footbag club with that much public awareness. The MFA aspires to that level of street cred. I know it's not the right weekend for the U.S. open, but it's the best I can do since I'll be working in the Idaho backcountry for the entire month of July.

I cant afford going to worlds this year I dont think so Im defiantly going to make it to the open this year! of course ill need a place to crash or maybe someone wanna split a hotel room?
Your next task: Go to the bathroom.
Wash your face.
Put your shoulders hunched upwards.
Look really, really slowly upwards towards the mirror like in the movies
And slap yourself in the face.
With your game face on.
And go shred with jim.
It'll work, trust me.

This year is turning out to be even more exciting than the last. The pioneer square venue will be off the chain and will attract more people and sponshorship than last year. Some crash space will also be provided at my house (or appartment if I can move out by then) so start planning on where your going and how soon. I can't wait to see everyone again!

With prize money for the event, it depends on a few factors, including how many people enter. Last year we did not have a set number until the last registration was turned in. The numbers of actual entries may very well be in the in the area of last year's, but it's not said and done until we close registration. It will be divided up a bit differently this year, but the same rule as last year applies; the more a player kicks ass across a range of events, the better the take. As always, there will be a great amount of prizes as well and medals as well.
I really encourage as many people to compete as possible, for a couple of reasons. Besides supporting the event, it is a good chance for freestylers to gain some experience with these events. There aren't too many competitions in North America at the moment that offer the full range of events (Routines, shred 30, Rippin' Run, Sick One, Sick Three, Circle). The Open is a good place to gain experience performing in the various competitions, or simply see it happen in real time. It's also a great warm up for Worlds and simply a fun time in general.
Anyway, more info to come. See you here!

This is in reply to the question about just kicking events ('hack events'), we will probably have a few events such as 'Last Kicker Standing' (the person who kicks the bag the longest wins), and Timed Kicks, (something like a minute to get as many kicks in as possible). This is tentative, but we have quite a few casual kickers as well as beginners and want to cater to the full kicking crowd, whether freestyle, net player, or again, casual player. Anyway, more info to come shortly!
The new promo vid for the Open is up, thanks to everyone involved.
