Drug testing and footbag in the Olympics

General footbag-related topics that don't fit elsewhere go in here.

Do you think we should start doing drug tests at major tournaments?

Yes- if that's what it takes to get Footbag into the Olympics.

But who should do that? Sport is in the position of already needing to test people for performance enhancing drugs and having organising bodies and people who can enforce the rules. There is no International Politicians Committee or similar. The same goes with acting and music. There also isn't any connection between the organisers of sports and the organisation that does exist in politics, music and acting. If the sports organisers have the view that all role models should be regularly drug tested they don't have any power to enforce that onto people outside of their jurisdiction. Politicians, musicians and actors may have a different perspective and not support testing for recreational drugs.

I think clearly there isn't any impact on the legitimacy of the role model argument based on whether other groups adhere to it or not.

i say yes. i made a number of posts in the old "drugs in footbag" thread detailing why, but i don't feel like reposting them or weeding through the number of spam posts in that thread.

Before footbag needs testing it needs a decent field of competitors. Theres under 500 people who compete in any form at footbag annually. And thats in the entire country and maybe the whole world.

Yep totally. As I said in my first post - at the moment drug testing is impractical. If the support continues to expand eventually we will have the resources to do it. When that happens I'll fully support drug testing for recreational and performance enhancing drugs. When footbag gets officially recognised by the IOC as an official sport and is large enough that they couldn't remove that status or if they did it wouldn't matter, I will launch my campaign to remove recreational drug testing for drugs that are not also performance enhancing.

I'd like for footbag to become an officially recognized sport by the Olympic committee.

Tomorrow (July 5) in Chicago we are doing an official olympics shred. Taste of Chicago (A huge event) has a big Olympic sports 2016 promotion area set up. Scott D. has an official footbag tent and desk set up to help promote and we may go on the Olympics stage in between official event stuff!

Our olympic promo went great :) We had tons of kids playing footbag their first time. every once in a while me or Scott would do a run to wow them. It still not impossible to have footbag on an olympic stage in 2016.
