Didnt get as much play in this weekend as I had first hoped.

Ive been feeling so stiff that even casual play was becoming tiring and making various muscles in my upper legs begin to hurt, so I avoided temptation all weekend and let myself rest. On top of that, I seem to have picked up whatever Jamie had for a few days, so now Im all bleary eyed, runny nosed and feeling somewhat sorry for myself.

I think I might be overdoing it, so when Im feeling a little better I intend to come up with a more structured routine, maybe four sessions a week of focused freestyling drills with a proper warmup before hand. Ideally, Friday will be a rest day altogether, giving myself a full day to recover so I can play til I drop over the weekend.

Oh, and still no USL either, Paypal wont take my bank card for some unbeknown reason :(

Wahey!

Just bought some Alcantara and another piece of material that from the description and picture appears to be Ultrasuede (but the seller couldnt confirm this) so in a few days Ill be able to start stitching some Green, Cream and Deep Red bags, with some turquoise in there should this other material prove its worth. I picked up some microfiber dusters from the local Lidl supermarket on a bit of a whim too, and stitched those in my never ending quest for the ultimate cheap-ass substitute, and theyre actually pretty good. Nice and soft, stall very well, and Ive made them a smaller size too (has helped no end with getting to grips with dexing). Ill get some pics up after im done sewing the next one.

Ive not been completely out of action, last night I managed a casual half hour or so just playing some passes back and forth with Jamie. The stiffness in my legs is gone, so i managed quite a few good side ATWs last night, barefoot and in both directions. I cannot wait to get my hands on some lavers though, or even just some cheap, lighter tennis shoes of any description right now. I feel that although the Laver will be an absolute essential, right now I do need some new trainers for just general use, and it cant hurt if they just so happen to be Laver-like in their appearance :D.

If anyone wants to know what footbag feels like in Airwalks, go and find yourself some wet cement, stand in it, and shred :D

Just a quickish mid-weekend update. The weather is freaking sweet right now. Loving being outdoors, loving how good it feels to be hitting cleaner and cleaner kickless runs, loving how im starting to reap the results of all my self-set drills, but most of all I love that feeling of the sun beaming down on and the sweat stinging my eyes. I could play this game til I drop.

Bought some new trainers, as close to a laver as my budget could afford. Airwalks again :D but this time canvas tennis-y style shoe. Im not much better in them ( I can ATW in these :D ), but im no worse. They are just so much lighter.

I am also making an attempt to give up smoking, hence the slight "brain-slurge" feel this post might have. I say attempt, its currently 7:30pm UK time, and so far ive smoked two since waking up around 9:30am. Given that the average is 20/25 a day, im looking at a ~90% reduction :D Its after eating that it gets to me, really struggle with that, always knew I would.

On a side note, Ive also hit 9 atws back to back on my good side (one short... dammit), 4 on flip. All in-out, out-in is still... interesting :D but coming.

I love footbag!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Breaking news : Jamie has just phoned up, he's just hit 4 ATWs back to back having only really been drilling them properly for under a day. Hes finding them easier than me, the little SOB  Still, he cant clipper yet :D

Its been a constructive few days :)

I have been trying to give up smoking, but its not been wholy successful. I am smoking a lot less though, the average was probably around 25 but since saturday, there hasnt been a day that I had any more than 8. It has made a small difference, maybe with time itll make more, but the most change will come when I finally bite the bullet and stop. Following on from some advice from Rieferman, aka Bob, the 1st of next month will be the day I WILL pack up for good :)

Footbag wise I couldnt be happier with my progress. Having managed to squeeze a bit more filler into my one and only good bag and get it back up to a better weight, ive managed to improve on the components of my game. Im happy with the way I play from toes and insides, my good side clipper is 90% consistent, with my flip not too far behind. ATW in to out on both sides is now something that I can introduce into a string if im feeling brave (and I know, I need to learn out to in too :P ). I can stay kickless for strings into the teens and occasionally beyond.

Psyched up on the way the weeks been going, I went to Jamies last night with the intentions of attempting something new. And ill never forget the evening....

I spent a few minutes going over the basics of a leg-over with him, did a few attempts myself then tossed him the bag. It went something like toe > attempted legover > dropped > sighed > toe > legover > handcatch.... I was miffed, to say the least, but so happy for him :D He, like me is unconfident in his ability, and so we always play in private. Im determined to get at least one bit off footage out of him though, and now he can see some progress I hope that wont be too far off.

Of course, not to be outdone, i grabbed another bag and we drilled like crazy for ten or so minutes straight, both of us barefoot and both of us more often than not at least footing it. Im pshyched, and I hope to have them locked down in time for Shred Mablethorpe.

So, yes, altogether a highly constructive week. Im a bit healthier, im starting to see signs of improvement, and I now totally get why ATW is the first around the ball trick to learn. Ive bought some Alcantra from eBay too, i know its not the best, but its so so purdy, and so Ive started work on my "offical" first ball, pics to come. Though, ask nicely, in the chatroom perhaps, and maybe ill send you a sneak preview piccie :)

good job on setting a quit date. After a couple days quit, you'll try to trick yourself into thinking that "just one" is ok. Or, "maybe just because I'm partying tonight" etc. Don't be an idiot like so many other smokers - plan ahead to win those arguments with yourself.

Btw, I've set myself a reminder in outlook to message you on the 1st to encourage you and be sure you're sticking to your plan.

Ian-> +1 Kudos on quitting smoking. I'm sorry if you already wrote in your blog, but I have no time to read through. Was footbag the catalyst?

Bob-> You're awesome.

Roy, yep, footbag is the reason! Even on a week of a cut-back routine, i can tell the difference.

Theres a better buzz to be had from landing a new move or hitting a long string than any chemical can give me! Save for plenty of caffine perhaps :)

And Bob, thanks for your support :D Im looking forward to a happier, healthier, kickier future!

Moving into the weekend, Ive got lots to focus on now. My current trick list includes legover and ATW now, and Ill still be drilling them, but ill also be putting focus into working them into some strings, which I will of course video and bring here for the perusal of the modified posse :)

Ill be filming in various locations around my home town too, as sort of a teaser flick for Shred Mablethorpe, which is now not much more than a week away. I have to say, the nerves are setting in, but im sure once Nick and Matt get here, all that will fade away into a blur of stitching, shredding, chewing on BBQd ribs and more shredding.

So for now modified, I bid thee farewell, and a happy weekend. Ill be back on monday, sore legs and all!

Yo ian!
One week to go! Don't be nervous either, first time I played in public I was on a main street in japan! Atleast u will be able to understand what the spectators will be saying!
I'm getting quite excited now, yay!

so pleased to hear you're getting some dexing moves now ian, just wait until you get the new shoes though!

i hope you're not nervous about meeting us! we're nice guys, honest (although inherently weird seeing as we kick around a small "bean bag" for at least an hour everyday...) ;)

bet you'll be fine in public too, people are generally impressed if you can just stall the bag! let alone do it behind your back and go around it!

They have arrived!!!

[img][/img]

And oh my god are they good. Im always skeptical of claims such as "these shoes will improve your game" but in this instance, had I made the bet, I would be chewing on my hat right now. before i modded them, before i even laced the damn things, I was outside hitting clean clippers both sides.

Still no grand progress with my other drills, but then, stitching has become an obsession of late. Now I have new shoes though, and with Shred Mablethorpe approaching, its time to step it up a gear. Legovers and ATWs, clippers, and with luck, clipper > ss Legover too (ive come close. As long as I dont plant in between, this seems a fairly straight forward trick, and might be my "big one").

Peace out!

Oooo the weekend is almost here!

Its nought but a few scant hours now until Shred Mablethorpe begins. Ok, still over 24 to go, and technically it doesnt begin in earnest til Sunday morning but still, im stupidly excited. Luck is on our side with the weatehr too it seems, not a rain cloud in the sky at the moment. Videos are great and all but to be able to see some of the tricks ive been trying to hit up close and personal can only be a good thing.

Loving my lavers, now festooned with red laces. Ive even plans to wear a red shirt on the day just to remain fully co-ordinated :D These shoes help so much, im upping personal bests all the time at the moment. Not quite made the magic 10 for clipper >> ss clipper yet, but eight is still a pretty number :D (good side only, flip clipper is still not quite right)

Umm.. yeah... thats about it. Next time you hear from me ill be a sweaty, collapsed mess, grinning from ear to ear and buzzing off the adrenaline :D

Now its time to really rack up the adds on these shoes :)

What a weekend.....

Figured it best to get all of this blogged while its still fresh in my mind. The feeling is certainly still fresh in my legs. Makes me glad for once that my job involves me having to sit down for eight hours :D

Anyway... It all started saturday night. Nick and Matt arrived around 8:30 I think, to find me already getting into the spirit of things stitching up a trade bag. It didnt take long before i was picking Matts brain for advice on different patterns :) Thinking about it, I took the opportunity to get advice on anything and everything that I could think of.

It didnt take long before we were up at the beach, hunting down a well it spot to shred on. That was my first proper circle, playing under the lamp posts, the music murmuring quietly in the background, only intermittently disturbed by the sounds of the North Sea sweeping along the coast line. Thats one hell of a footbag-based memory for me. Again, the advice was free flowing, my toe set was cleaned up, and legover followed shortly afterwards. In shoes. With a proper bag. This was closely followed by an unexpected double high five, a hit-a-new-trick celebration ill be carrying on into every circle I join from now on :D

The next day saw blue skys with a little cloud and one of the hottest days I recall this year. We hit the beach just after ten in the morning, and I tried not to focus on how busy it was. I was there to represent a sport I love and god dammit I was gonna give it everything I could give (as it turns out, by the end of the day, I pretty much had.... :D ).

We returned to the spot we'd played at previously the night before. It was a quieter area of the beach, not as much foot traffic, but there were still plenty of heads being turned, and the occasional "Hold on, look at this" could be heard. As the circle flowed, I lost track of time and the nerves slipped right away.

We went looking for another spot, and found a great raised area just in front of the fairground rollercoaster. Our enthusiasm was obviously not shared by the ride owner, who when asked why we couldnt play there said, and I roughly quote "Because its a public walkway.... and its private". It took a lot of self control but i managed not to laugh in the guys face, and temptation resisted we did as all well behaved boys do and moved about three feet away onto the main walkway. Im still puzzling over how an area can be both public and private at the same time!

Eventually we moved on again and went to shred near.... you know what, theres a video coming, im not gonna spoil the surprise, needless to say, I think Nick and Matt would both agree it was certainly an unusual backdrop to a video :). Again there were lots of turned heads, I watched some people walking backwards at some point trying to catch glimpses of what was going on.

The midday sun was becoming relentless at this point, and lacking any area of shade in which to chill out in, we headed back to mine, where Nick made a family visit, and I sat while Matt stitched an entire bag to my half of one. I still conceed that if i hant been cooking hotdogs on the barbecue at the time, Id have finished at about the same time :D Matt was kind enough to leave me enough material for two bags, and some filler for both. Itll come in handy, as the way my legs feel right now, I dont think ill be doing much shred today.... not too much anyway

Upon Nicks return we headed up to the beach again for one last session, but I was truly feeling jelly-legged by this point. Again, more interest, and one young lad who had been watching us in the morning session returned. He is now the proud owner of my purple sand-filled bag. Who knows, maybe we'll see more of him next year. He certainly seemed keen.

And thus, my first footbag jam did draw to a close. A full 24 hours of nothing but footbag, footbag and more footbag. I cant thank you guys enough, youve boosted my confidence a hell of a lot. Shredding in the back garden just doesnt have the same level of appeal anymore.

You also helped me produce the following highlights, I hope Ive got this list right :)

 Legover bsos
 Mirage
 Far legover
 Clipper > Op Clipper

Yeah ok it wasnt Worlds, and the turnout may have only amounted to three, but a jam is a jam, and I enjoyed every single minute of it!

sounds like a fun jam! you should cut the leather off of the toe and inside surfaces on your lavers. Just be careful not to cut through the thin layer underneath!

props on your new move. I love double high-five.
BRICK!
