But 30 minutes of the Simpsons a day is all the TV I need.
What about Television?
Love it. Even if I'm not watching it I just about need to have it on as white noise. Mostly watch cartoons and history channel with some comedy thrown in the mix.

It probably does rot your mind but so do drugs and booze. TV is my anti drug! So if I ever catch anyone here who's badmouthing TV (saying it's bad for your mind) drinking or smoking pot or something I'll punch you in the zipper, followed by the faec :p.
I HIGHLY doubt that study, the TV may be ON that long during the day but that doesn't mean they're watching it the whole time.
Without TV it would be alot harder for us to find out about new products that we wish to buy. Don't like TV? Don't watch it, sit and wait for a time machine to be invented then go back and kill the inventor. But you'll probably never know about the machine because the first place we'll hear about it is ON OUR FUCKING TVs!!!

They also spend a 3rd of it sleeping, and I guess the other 3rd would be working. Why doesn't everyone just quit their job, stop watching tv and fight to get crank legalised so we can all really start living!Stephen Barnes wrote:The average American watches about 5-6 hours, approximately one third of their waking day, watching television... :-\

or sex or work or pay taxes or drive or have my own place or high school or.... the list really goes on. These are the classic symptoms of Imthirteenitis. Generally, those classified under the category have low credibility in retorts due to lack of experience. To put it in easy words: "never say never"Stephen Barnes wrote:I don't do TV OR drugs.

Monkeys don't talk and look at them! They have a good ole time. And what about all those people who protest by vow of silence? Could be this talking thing is highly overrated.

I like television. I like futurama, family guy, and chappelle show. These are good things because they make people laugh and that can cure lots of things.
My babysitter up until kindergarten was MTV. I don't have ADD and I don't have to watch television everyday. The only thing it did to me was give me a soft spot for 80's music. Blaming the problems of society on television is dumb. I'm sure people that are addicted to television have a lot of other problems in their lives and would turn to whatever else was available for escape if the television had never been invented.
A thread should be made on computers. I love my computer, and it definitely has more hold on me than a television ever will.
Is there a thread already and I missed it?

Seriously brad!
I was just about to bring that up . . . but now that you already have:
To Stephen Barnes: Dont try to sound cooler than you are. Who really cares if you dont watch TV but you? Certainly we don't. We do however understand that you must be sitting your ass down in front of your computer, probably no more than 1-2 feet away from your monitor, typing these silly messages, pretending to be better than you really are.
Don't deny your addiction to one mass media gadget while your existence flourishes only within the existence of another!
Did that make sense? Anyway, not to pick on Stephen, but seriously, even though many of us say we dont watch TVs, we cant say that we dont veg out in front of our comps. Lets just face it, its not really the lesser of two evils.

Good point. I've cut down on my computer vegging out a lot, lately. I'm down to maybe two hours a night, now. It may not appear that way, since I'm logged on 24/7, but I'm usually not there...
Anyway, this topic wasn't brought up so that I could brag about not watching TV, but rather so I could get some feedback from you guys that I could use when writing a speech for my speech class on why Television isn't worthwhile (or... something to that effect).

Chris man, that was hilarious. Seriously, nothing personal Stephen, that just cracked me up and i thought it deserved 'burn' recognition.
it does seem like stephen getting singled out
sorry, back to the topic....
I jus moved into a downtown Mpls apt (with 3 random girls
Free Speech TV - a non corporate news channel that broadcasts stuff from around the world
Comedy Central - Chappelle Show + S. Park
Skin-a-max - to watch when all the girls come home
So yea, i think TV can be informative, humourous, and fun if you have many diverse options.
It's set up like a deck of cards,
theyre sendin us to early graves
for the diamonds
they use a pair of clubs to beat the spades(ratm)

so... err... juan, buddy... when can i come down for a ...um... jam?
any hoo, i don't watch alot of TV, or movies, but i do spend stupid huge amounts of time on my computer. it's not that i think it's rots your brain, TV just doesn't have enough selection, you're stuck with what ever is on the select channels you have. the internet seems like it has alot more to offer. well to me any way. i did vote for "Bad" how ever, simply because it suited my opinion best.

I haven't really watched TV for some 5-6 years, except for few periods of time stuck in different circumstances than usual!! I guess I could say that I watch an average of 1 hr/ week.. (if not less..!) Only thing I really miss is the News, but I try and keep up through newspapers..
I think TV offers many good and usefull things, but the problem is picking them out from all the shit... (excuse my language!) -and not get sucked into the next program and the next...and so on...and letting it take all your (precious) time, energy, motivation and creativity.
I've roughly calculated that the amount of time my peers spend in front of the TV pretty much equals the amount of time I spend kicking my footbag. And if I were to chose between the two...... hmmm... well...
I wasn't brought up with a TV either. I lived in Africa till I was about 14-15 and spent most of my time climbing trees and playing football on the streets...!! (and going to school... of course!)
Computers is another interesting point and they definately are starting to work their way into my life!! -I better go now..!

The V-chip is an awesome FCC invention used to opress America's youth.
Good idea, never really took off, but they sure do advertise it a lot.
Personally I'd like to see a totally uncensored TV Network System, like cable only no censorship at all. I just want to hear the word fuck and see Janet's Tit without Howard Stern getting fired for it.
