Maybe that Doctor was just stupid and thats why it took him a year to figure it out. I guess Im not smart because i figured it out in 5 minutes?

well usually teh smarter people are the harder they analyze things..some smart people though are capable of starting off with teh most simple and childish explanations first and then progressing..others start with the hardest possible thing and then get harder

yeah I don't think it really does correspond to intelligence. I just mentioned that because it took me ages to figure it out and reading that made me feel better. I definitly did over analyse and came up with same huge theories involving geometric sequences and prime numbers, but realised I must be on the wrong track and tried to look at it without using any mathematical ability apart from the most basic skills.

I'd agree it's not really intelligence in the normal sense. It's more a device to show how different types of people will go about solving problems.

I did basically what you did, matching certain geometric patterns with certain algorithms and whatnot (figuring out how the answer was sometimes 0 perplexed me a bit and forced more complex ideas). About the same time I started looking around for a pad and a pencil I realised I'd gotten way, way off track, so I thought more laterally for a bit and then got it. However that was after about 20+ minutes of trying and getting frustrated

Heh, just my kind of puzzle. Tried a few math paterns, then I got frustrated and looked a little closer.

Great puzzle, took me about 5 mins.

I was stuck on this for about half an hour until i got out a pen and paper and figured it out using algebra.

You've just got to know a few things about the puzzle, which you can get from clues that were on the webpage and said by people here who solved it).

1. Only basic math is used (so i assumed it only used addition/subtraction)
2. The order of the dice doesn't matter, and it 'usually' uses 5 (so it can be played with different numbers of dice). This suggests that each die contributes to the answer independently of the others.

Knowing this, you can assign each side of the die a variable, use a few trial runs to spit out some equations, and solve. math wins, creativity loses! :p

Algebra has little to do with it. By basic math they mean counting from 1 to whatever the total is.

I see patterns in this puzzle. Not equations.

What the heck are you talking about? Variables for each side of the die?

Here is a random 5 die roll.

5 3 3 1 6

Imagine the dice. The answer is 8. Only count the dice that have a dot in the middle. 5 3 3. Count the ammount of dots around the middle dot, not including the middle dot. 4 on the 5, 2 on the 3, 2 on the three. The answer is 8. You needed a pen and paper to work out an equation?

You get the answer by looking at a positional pattern on the dice.

Actually I completely see what Chris is talking about - and now feel like a complete failure.

Let me show you
Lets say 1=a 2=b etc

Lets say you role 53316 and discover it =s 8.
therefore aef 2c = 8
Now if you continue to do this with a number of equations, it will quickly become obvious that c=2 and e=4 with the rest equalling 0.

Chris is right - maths wins.

WORD JEREMY!!!!!

I used to be big into math until I decided to go into music, either way I'm gunna be a poor son of a bitch. Math and science can explain everything, even if logic can explain it easier. logic is a maliable, deceptive field brought forth by the science and math that is happening inside of our bodies. What our senses tell us isn't neccesarily what is actualy happening. Where am I going with this??? stupid logic...
