Had a blah session in the basement last night -- felt really drained. Concentrated mostly on the basics, drilling etc. but my endurance seems to have gone out the window. I hadn't played seriously in quite a while before that (last time was when I made the video), which is probably the reason for my tiring out so quickly. Frustrates me how long it takes to build endurance and how quickly it seems to dissipate.

I'm going to really try and step up the frequency of my practices in an effort to build endurance for longer string length and to simply get better faster. Here's to hoping that I can stick with it after last night's discouraging session.

You can do it!! I've taken lots of really long breaks from footbag and it always takes a while to feel normal again. Just stick with it, it'll come back.

Well, you were right, Tony!

I had a tight basement session last night -- mostly drills and attempts at some moves that have been thwarting me. I played for 2+ hours which may or may not have been the best thing to do for my legs.

 10 consecutive, alternating butterflies drill
 10 consecutive, alternating osi... osii? drill
 5 consecutive, alternating ducking clippers drill
 10 consecutive, alternating mirages drill
 Pendulous ducking butterfly
 Footed pendulous ducking reverse whirling rake
 One very clean weak-side whirl
 Multiple reverse whirls, some consecutive, on both sides
 Blurry legover > dimwalk > string (without TOE stalls)
 Clipset ducking butterfly > op clipset ducking butterfly > string
 Other strings that I can't recall (going to bring a pad of paper down for the next session)

Stoked. Kyle Thompson from the Binghamton area is coming home for the holidays and there will definitely be some shred going down. Finally get to shred with someone else from the area (even if it's only for a winter break).

Thanks bro! It definitely felt good -- I'm imagining that the other pendulous move that I listed would feel even better to hit.

Had another session last night in an effort to increase my stamina during runs. I hope that the increase in frequency won't spell disaster for my legs though -- already feeling the shin splints starting to crop up. I stopped playing when I felt them; hopefully that will keep them at bay.

Nothing really new to report... last night's basement session was focused entirely on longer strings without BOP bails (even though I don't consider some of those moves "bails" for me) or toe stalls. I did hit a cool, spontaneous link after a few tries though:

 Refraction > Torque (probably the second Torque I've ever hit!)

If you can, get hold of an offcut of carpet or a big rug that you can shred on. You dont need much, 6ft by 6ft does me. I need to find myself a new one actually. I left my last one outside overnight once, and one of the local cats left a deposit slap bang in the middle of it

Mark! Wow dude! This shit rips hard! I'm liking the fact that you're using some dope ass pendulous sets and executing them. Props man! I really can't wait til we kick again! Sounds like you style has really gotten some more pizzaz (not pizzas). Awesome to see you've ELIMINATED TOE STALLS!!!! I can't tell you how much I like the fact that you're using pendulous sets now. That just clicks with how your style looks. Sick that you and Kyle get to kick a lot over break. You guys should definitely take video. Happy Jolly Days!

Sticks on the Ground

PA Jam was sweet (thanks again, Nick!) -- good friends, good times, good shred... bad weather, but we made it work. I was glad for the event in a lot of ways, including the fact that it had me drilling again in the two weeks leading up to it. Also, and more obviously, I love the footbag "high" that comes from being at a jam. I think I enjoyed being at a jam more than being at an actual tournament. The killer shred was there without the pressure of remembering routine cues or worrying about dropping on sick three.

I also managed to hit one new trick (thanks, Boats!):

 Reverse Whirligig (Blurry Symp Reverse Whirl?)

Going to be doing some serious drilling in the near future. I have a packed schedule these days but I plan on making time to get a lot better than I am right now. Here's to hoping that actually happens.

Dude, I don't know how many times I have to say it -- that river was definitely not there when I released the disc. Flash flooding.

Had an awesome session at the tennis courts the other day... well, awesome up until the last few seconds.

 BSOS/B2B Ripwalks into strings
 Lots of Reverse Whirls
 Several RPTs of my BOP drill
 10 contacts of clean Ducking Clippers B2B
 Long strings that generally felt more controlled

And, last but not least:

 Dimwalk > Reverse Whirligig > Long String

I felt amazing until I tried to bust a weak-side drifter. My leg "miraged" the bag without a problem but when my left foot went to wrap around my right leg into clipper position for the delay, my left foot hit the inside of my right ankle, rolling the right foot over onto its outside surface. Crunchy.

Suffice to say, it was a crappy way to end such a good session but I'm taking some time off. I was able to walk it off without much of an issue and now I'm drooling over footbag videos while I recover. Lame.

Had an ankle recovery session in the basement last night. I just moved some sound equipment down there so I can crank some tunes. One more step towards converting that space into an all-season shredding area.

The session was decent... I took it easy so as not to bother my ankle. The time off that I've taken over the last month for recovery has really shown in my game but I hope to rectify that as the ankle gains strength.

I learned something about my pixies last night: when I'm setting for something like dimwalk, smear, or plo I don't even have to think about the set and I exert a very small amount of effort. When I'm setting for a same-side downtime component like sidewalk, pixie ss legover, or pixie ss dyno I constantly hit the bag with my leg and really have to concentrate to get the set clean. I know that I should have the same pixie set for all moves, straight up and down and that I should control the height but my body doesn't seem to agree.

Stoked for NYFA jam this weekend. I'm admittedly a bit nervous about driving my car into the city because I haven't really ever done a lot of city driving but this will be worth it. Looking forward to seeing everyone from previous jams and meeting new people. Hopefully my ankle is to the point where I can enjoy some light shred on each of the days.

NYFA Jam 5

Post by RipWalker »

Well, this weekend confirmed my hatred of city driving, but I can safely say that it was totally worth it.

The fifth iteration of NYFA Jam was an awesome time! Here's a brief write-up:

Friday

I got into the city at about 8 or 8:30 PM (I think) and found an obscure side street to park on. I was real nervous about my car getting towed or ticketed but it turned out to be a great spot (as confirmed by Bruce). I called Bruce and rolled over to his apartment which was such a sweet(s) place to crash. Honestly, everything in there from closets to cupboards to his freakin' faucet and shower made my house seem so dated in comparison (especially the robot shower w/ Sac-Wash(TM) technology).

We rolled over to Matt's place as soon as I unloaded my gear. I didn't end up getting to see Matt's actual apartment but it looked similarly awesome and the rooftop w/ hot tub was prime. What a great view of the city from up there too! Nick, John Goode, Matt Kemmer and I played a little bit of foursquare with a light-up bag. I came into the first game in the middle but that apparently was the "spit-a-rhyme-that-rhymes-with-your-score" game. The second game was the "name-an-animal-whose-gestation-period-is-that-of-your-score" game. No one actually knew any of the animals (with the exception of 9, duh) and no time scale was specified so the things we came up with were pretty hilarious. After foursquare came some hot tub time for some and general hanging out. The Boston crew rolled in late and it was real cool to see Doug again and meet Kevin and Pete for the first time. It was also the first time I had met Matt Kemmer and it was great to see Nick, Jackson, John, Matt, Drew, Dave, Bruce, Waylon, and Jay again.

After Matt's roof it was back to Bruce's for chill/crash time. I don't really remember much because of how tired I was. My work schedule typically has me in bed by around 11 or 11:30 and up at 6 AM every morning so my body was tweaking out. I think I crashed relatively early that night (maybe 2 AM).

Saturday

Pete puked in Bruce's kitchen sink.

Sunday

Just kidding -- I'll do Saturday and Sunday in separate posts as I'm at work right now and should probably do some of that. More to come!

This is the worst write-up ever. It's like reading what came out of Pete's mouth Saturday morning multiplied by what came out of Kevin's mouth Sunday morning...

NYFA Jam 5 Write-up Continued...

Saturday

Ok so Saturday did actually pretty much start with Pete puking in Bruce's sink. My work-schedule body woke me up at like 7:30 so I just laid in bed for a while until Nick got up and started getting everyone pumped to kick.

While we waited for everyone to get moving, a few of us went out to the front of the reception hall place next door and kicked a bag around for a bit until it started to rain. Eventually, everyone was up and we rolled over to the breakfast place that Bruce had told us about. The food there was awesome and the coffee was free (and good!), though I think they were a bit taken aback by 10 hungry footbaggers showing up to the already-crowded eatery.

Throughout the day, I had been testing out my ankle via different stretches and movements and it actually felt pretty good. All the same, I was sure that I'd rather not burden myself with competing (though I definitely should have, looking back on it now).

After breakfast, we headed back to Bruce's for a bit and then started our journey to Central Park. I guess some of the trains were out, or maybe just the stations, but we had to walk part of it. I remember trying to find footbag-related words on the posters in the trains with Nick and at least one of the rides had us jam packed and me uncomfortably close to Doug Tank (anything under 10ft is uncomfortable when it comes to him). I think Pete was trying to trick off of one of the benches on the train too -- might have been going for mobius or torque... maybe he was just reading Sweets -- I can't remember.

I had never been to Central Park before so seeing it for the first time was very cool. I knew a lot about it but I never realized exactly how huge it is. The weather was not the best on Saturday. A misty rain hung around the whole time we were there, sometimes building into a drenching rain that kept us cloistered under a walkway covered by trees. These circles were fun but I felt that I couldn't really enjoy them because of the weather. Eventually, Doug, John Goode, and I went off in search of cheap hoodies or long sleeved shirts to buy. John manned up and asked a random couple who directed us to the gift shop of a tavern right in the park. Everything in there was quite expensive but John ended up getting a hoodie and I scored a youth large hoodie for half the price. The hood was useless, covering the back 1/3 of my head like a spandex yarmulke. Oh well, it kept me warm so I didn't complain, though I didn't hear the end of it for the rest of the weekend from Tank and Goode.

Circle comps were great. I got a little bit of filming in with my ghetto flip-type camera and really enjoyed watching everyone's styles. Jay tore it up, as per the usual, but I saw some really good strings from John, Doug, Pete, Ben and others. I don't know anything about trick names, as most are aware, but I think Jay hit something like Superdeeduperfly to start a run. I have it on film... maybe.

Mid-way through the comps I was ravenously hungry but I didn't want to miss anything so I just quieted my stomach, which promptly began eating itself out of spite. Thankfully, Matt Cross and others organized a sushi party shortly after circle comps finished. The walk to the sushi sucked but the sushi itself was amazing. Freakin' spicy tuna for the w!n. Some of us were noobs and didn't know about the special going on so we ended up getting another whole roll of sushi and got a half off deal. I love sushi. Watching Matt and Barrett make origami paper dollars that held quarters was cool.

I'm getting hungry just typing about sushi -- I'm going to go eat my lunch and finish the rest of Saturday later on.

doug only hates on your writeup because he can't read.

good meeting you and having my liquor stolen by you too :) Mark! thanks for the compliment on my style. I dig your trick selection (rev whirls, dynos, refractions) and that nuke same dyno attempt mid string was badass.

I'll be in the summer for sure this summer i hope to shred with you again.
