zach no need to cut the side walls of the lacing stripe off.
It's a matter of how clean your pixie is. Don't fling it around the
place, but be sure the bag has left your foot before you start dexing.
Actually, the walls help you to get a clean pixie set. Of course, it
will be harder, but once you've got it down, it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm still not a master of the pixie by any definition, but what helped me was visualizing the move in two parts. One is the initial straight lift which gets the bag up off of your toe, and the second being the dex. I used to have trouble with my ATWs and pixies because I would melt these two steps into one. Thusly, the bag would remain on my foot when I started the second part/dex and would get flung off to the side. If you concentrate on letting the bag come away from your toe and then perform the dex soon after, you should be a bit more successful as you progress. Setting the bag higher will come as you grow more comfortable with the motions and build muscle memory.
