Maraxus... I'm assuming you want a PC and not a Mac or a Linus? Just curious. I'll be getting a Mac next year for my major (music) in college.

It's an open-source OS. (It IS open-source, correct?) I've never used it, but I've wanted to. I'm sure a programmer on here will be able to provide a better explanation.

My sister owns a Dell Inspiron (not sure of the model). It runs very quiet and is very light.

I don't know a whole lot about computer models, but my sister seems to be happy with it.

Linux is very useful if you know how to use it.

I don't see why people are smashing alienware so much. Alienware made its name not by selling a p.o.s computer for the smallest amount possible. They make sure every thing they make runs at it top performance, and test the shit out of everything before they send it out. If your not a hardcore PC Enthusiast then Alienware isn't for you.

The cheapest computer is almost always the one you build for yourself, I built mine identical to Alienware (in looks) with the performance I wanted and it was only like $700. Unfortunately labtops aren't so easy to build IMO.

For good reliable, non-hardcore labtop, I definitely recommend Dell for performance, price, and service. I would never recommend a Compaq or Hewlett Packard, performance and service for the price is just not worth it.

Linux is a worldclass OS, i've been using it since 1996 as my OS of choice. It's not windows or macos, or unix really. It's linux. It won't run windows software, or mac software, but there are lots of programs availabel for it. It's mainly useful for servers, programmers, and users who do a lot of string and stream processing.
