Southern Footbag!

This Yankee, for one, is very excited to hear of the emerging footbag scene in New Orleans, and the south in general. I dunno. There have been clubs dotting the south from time to time, but it seems to be more timely right now, with the Southeastern Regional having its 4th Year in Georgia soon, and Texas still going strong after many years, and now New Orleans in between. Just a few more locations between these places could make for a very active footbag region overall. I can't wait to visit the Big Easy and kick it with you. Alas, it is not in my immediate plans, as I feel a little poor lately, ("stretched thin, like butter spread over too much toast") and I must save for Finland.

So, likely I'll not go to Jazz Fest this spring, but I've always wanted to, and think I'll not put it off for too much longer. Still, I'll daydream some, and perhaps entertain the idea. Maybe my tax returns will be bigger than expected (probably the opposite, though).

Informal or otherwise, make some sort of announcement for Jazz Fest and tell those Texas and Georgia guys that they should come.

Man, I miss shredding uber frequently. Anyway, Andrew and I got in a good Saturday's session today, and even recorded some of it, for sick three competition purposes. I'm pretty pleased with the recording. I won't go into the combo until after the competition, but mine's three three adds. I gotta confess, I wanted one, if not two 4s in there. I have a 3x4 combo in mind, but it'll be a while before I'm that proficient. I confess I'm disappointed in my progress since I've been back from Prague. I can blame two factors. Inevitably, school is an one. I feel my leather lavers are another. It's been recommended that I modify them and remove the leather exterier, but I like the way they are. I'm just going to get the mesh ones soon (with TTT1 and a Sandmaster). If that doesn't make all the difference, I'll only be able to cut off my 4adds and school pure fundamentals again until something clicks. I just feel like I'm trying to play above my means right now; it's frustrationg. Anyway, I hope CSS6 is kicking ass, even without me. Just y'all wait until I hit regionals.

Technical details have prevented my competing in this month's online sick 3. Nevertheless, training for it has been most helpful. My combo to be entered was butterfly>pdx mirage>eclipse. I wanted to start it with dimwalk, but that wasn't happening in front of the camera. We'll see for next time though; I'm also contemplating a pixie set into that eclipse. Anyone who wants to recommend which tier of competition I should enter such a combo into, may.

Today's session was very exciting for me. I've been schooling some basics lately, pdx mirage, legover, etc., so I was very pleased to hit something new: symposium whirl! I was very pleased. I had it stuck in my head after rewatching some Vasek Croatia footage where he's schooling some symp. barraging stuff. Watching him helped me internalize the gist of the symposium add. It really kicks ass that he and others can continue to inspire me even while I'm no longer 'round those parts.

Finally, the Jacksonville Fla. footbag club better be kicking, as I'll likely live there for this coming summer.

After sustaining a symposium whirl related knee injury, it was unfortunate that yesterday's session was so big for me. I finally got to meet that Larson gentleman from Baton Rouge I'd heard about. He lived up to his hype, throwing down drifters, pdx drifters, and other such excitement left and right. He hits dimwalk with greater ease than I, but shares my frustration with ripwalk. At any rate, it was fantastic to put together a circle with him, Andrew, Mark, and me together. A couple of other good kickers were present too. I was disappointed that I couldn't play at my best, what with my bum knee and all. I did do some good weakside training though, getting a couple of good weakside whirls in. I just hope I'm in good shape for regionals.

I just got the #1 combo in: lavers, sandmaster, TTT1. TTT1 is so dated; I love it. I see now, blur is miraging pdx mirage. I'm still damning my knees, but I persevere. I hit my first diving today too. Oh, yea, I love footbag... almost as much as I love Erin.

Some online investigation and some discussion with Mark (and a good viewing of TTT1) has revealed that what I thought were whrils are actually reverse whirls. I thought the distinction arbitrary at first until I considered that while symposium reverse whirl exists (indeed, I've hit it), there's no such beast as PS reverse whirl. This has helped me understand the paradox add appreciably more. My problem with whirls though, the real ones, is this that my dex leg keeps colliding with my support leg. I'll keep at it though, as I think PS whirl may yet become my first 5add.

Also, I'm in tears not to be in Prague right now.

After my mopey spring break, I was glad to play with Andrew and Mark again today. The New Orleans Footbaggin' Machines even played LA's first four square game. A net game is to follow, and if I'm lucky, ultimate footbag too.
Andrew had a good string in with pdx drifter, torque, and dimwalk all in there. Mark was throwing around a bunch of mirages, pdx mirages, and a good dada curve. I was pleased to hit my first real symposium whirl and also eclipse bsos. OH MAN! I just had an idea. Flying pendulum? Anyone? I'm totally gonna hit that soon, maybe even as soon as that torque I keep threatening to hit.

edit: oh, I also hit "105 on my cryptography midterm" and am currently schooling "five page fuzzy cryptography paper".

Much footbag excitement has gone down lately in my humble city. Four square is becoming a regular occurrance. I'm glad to see us so open to alternative forms of playing. I like four square since it's competitive, yet still has as much freestyle as you like. I'm also excited that our club has attracted the attention and membership of a girl from neighboring Mississippi. Diane's coming to town at the end of the month, just in time for Jazz Fest. So now I'm especially obliged to plan an exciting footbag event, since we're already attracting out of state players.

My personal accomplishments lately have been a marked, slow but steady improvement in my string length. Also, in Mark's company this past Sunday, I hit pixie legover and parkwalk. I fear my impulse to work on new big tricks may be hindering my progress in string length, which I know I want to improve first. As long as I'm improving steadily, though, I'm quite happy with myself.

Hola amigos. I know it's been a long time since I've rapped at ya, but I've been busy with German exams and cryptography quizzes. Regardless, be assured I've been playing, and I finally have news worthy of updating my blog with:

DOUBLE OVER DOWN!

Yes, I hit paradon. I think it was paradon. Is it still paradon if set from the opposite inside delay and not the toe? I did it once this afternoon in Pensacola and once again this evening on the levee here in New Orleans. Footbag plus travelling always equals fun.

Also, in local news, as UNO footbag grows, it attracts more and more attention. Recently Rob Creel and Andrew Grieshaber were shredding outside the Math building and the phantom newspaper's photographer began taking pictures for the next issue of the paper whenever that may come. During said session Rob hit symposium whirl and several flying tricks. Andew was reported to have drifted and torqued all up in it.

Here I sit in UNO's math building, the sweatiest, and likely the smelliest I've ever been, feeling righteous and victorious for the day. For even though I'm missing the first day of Jazz Fest, and even though I usually don't like to resort to enlarging my font,

I hit Paradox Symposium Whirl.

Twice. They may not have been the shallowest of dexterities, but I think my windows were pretty small. I THEed it twice before I hit it well, and even then I had to hit it once more before I could be confident in claiming it. Also, I was alone at the time, so I'm having to bestow these props upon myself, but right now, I'm one happy shredder. I officially welcome myself into the company of those who hit 5add moves.
