Hey jay, glad to hear your game is moving forward and that you're making some good academic progress towards college. what schools are you looking at?

any news on that "vote for jay" pin?

are you even aware of the meaning of these pins are to Tom and I?

I will explain.

Footbag scenes are largely dependent on someone in the region being the go-getter, the one who organizes tournaments, makes all the phone calls, gets people to design shirts, posts in the blogs to keep people psyched, trains new players and organizes sessions, etc etc. Tom has been one of the main people (arguably THE main person) in Southeastern Canada for a few years now, but he's moving, and the scene will take a major hit if no one is found to fill his shred shoes and take over.

We were talking before and during NYJ, and Tom, Peng, and I think you should be that person. That's what the Vote for Jay pins are all about, we're "voting" for you as King of the southeast Canada footbag scene. We think you're a good player and would do a good job, and just want to offer some encouragement.

If you go to college in a metropolitan area, you could get a lot done for footbag. Are you looking at any big cities?

Really? I guess I have confused what productive is for myself. This isn't a stab at you, rather me. I jump around to so many concepts per session that I just never feel fulfilled with one of them, so I always feel like if I had went for a BIT longer I would have magically acheived my goal. Perhaps I shall try more focused sessions.

As for Universities, I have applied to Waterloo, not far from Toronto, Western in London, McMaster in Hamilton ( :twisted: ) and Carleton (ottawa). I am going to have a car within the next few months, and I do NOT want to waste the opportunity I have with all the amazing people in Canada AND New York. I honestly wouldn't mind [I say this now, who knows what gas prices will be] dropping in on an RFA session every once in a while, or go up to see Johnny or Jorden regularily.

Peng told me that I should organize a Tournament when I get to University, and I think that would be an awesome idea! It would be really awesome to become a solid footbag player to represent Canada, a good stitcher, AND tourny holder. Photoshop isn't hard, fruity loops is just fun, I've got loads of video software, so promoting tournaments shouldn't be a big deal. I think the only issue I'd have with a tournament would be my lack of confidence, but I'm sure that I would take lessons from the Greats. Whakahakee 2 would be an honour, (In warmer weather).

Montreal = best city for footbag in Canada? I'd vote for it.

Day 1.
Matthieu.

Mathieu, my friend Liam and I played in the old school room, where we all played decently. Mathieu surprised me the most, because he became 100% more consistant from NYJ, where I had seen him play last. His runs were pretty varied, even throwing in random PS whirls here and there. Of course you can expect gyro DLO's, Vortex's, Assassins and the usual out of him. He began the session with a smog, as his first trick if I remember correctly, and nailed a spinning motion to end the session too. It was a shame that he had a broken toe to deal with, as his balance was a bit off apparently.

I played ok I guess. My favourite highlight was at the very end, I learnt how Mathieu hits vortex's, which I am determined to mid-string-all-day-long now. As well, I hit ps whirl both sides within about, 10 tries each side after Mathieu helped me along with each try. Damn what a sexy feeling trick. I am one step closer to having as sexy of a move as matt cross does...And everyone else, but I'll assume PS whirl is Matt's trick. Sorry.

Day 2.
Mathieu and Sebastien.

We met in (sp) Jouliette train station, where Mathieu lives very close to, and we had a circle of first Mathieu Liam and I, and later Sebastien came.

Wow Seb is good.

His warmup run consisted of high guiltless/tripless shuffle, which later progressed into some other insanity. It is all a bit Hazy, but my favourite run from him was either a double dex run(which apparently could have been better. BSOS'ed pixie paradon, blurriest, blurrier and in another run he bsos'ed SUPERFLY) He also had a great eggbeater run, which, if memory serves me correct he got bedwetter and ps egg bsos. His spins are desperately effortless, where he just turns on a dime with such ease. I think seeing him spin will help me learn them properly. He is such a solid player, and his double dexes are just, well, you all have seen them.

Mathieu played similar to the day before, hitting some weird stuff here and there. By weird stuff, I mean guay/inside tricks, randomly mid-string.

I played coldly. It was a tad bit chilly in the train station, but definetly warmer than outside. It snowed terribly that day. But I hit some good runs, I think I bsos'ed far swirl, blender, torque and fairy mirage in one string one time. Other times my runs just, were very repetetive which annoyed me. I hit some new tricks, my favourite being a PROPERLY done torquescrew. None of that refraction crap, a pure sexy dyno. THANKS mathieu for showing me the footwork on that. I also relearnt flails from Sebastien, who did them oh-so-effortlessly.

Day 3.
James.

So, I wake up and read on the 'fizzied (which finally got back up....grunt) that James was able to play, and contacted him accordingly. I went to his awesome apartment building, and we got to play near a pool which was PERFECT, as the humid atmosphere meant that you could warm up very quickly. He was excited to be able to play Super Smash Brothers Brawl, which I thought was awesome.

Despite his critical-ness towards himself, he is a good footbagger. His emphasis on style and form is very precise, and it shows. His runs aren't boring, because everything must be done uniquely, no osis->butterfly, no smear->dimwalk, but rather osis->zooming pickup or smear->tapdown. He also has good looking spins, which allowed his runs to look cool. He got ps whirl b2b first try, which looked effortless.

Irish Cream what?!!? It came up in conversation, and he humbly said "I can do that trick". After a couple of tries, it flew upwards off his foot in a fashion that said "I indeed can do that trick" to me. Kick ass.

His alpine game also is very good, form wise. Every duck is curled right around his neck, which made me realize as to what people meant when they told me "don't set so high". He can also do a WIDE variety of sets and downtime tricks, namely having deep double downs. Thanks for explaining those to me :)

I personally played well I think. It seemed that my sets were consistant as ever, and yes as said above, hitting atomic torque, first try in my entire career was kinda surprising. I was more excited to hit little apple bsos for well, the first time seeing as I learnt it that day. While it isn't a hard trick, it just makes me feel SO much closer to big apple, one of the cooler footbag moves.

All in all, James really inspired me to have more, cool links in my runs. I shall master zooming as well, as I have just discovered it's greatness.

Gyro osis->mobius from James was cool. Quick change in momentum.

Did I say doof? His knee's shouldn't be allowed to do that.

The one trick I completely forgot to hit was flail, but other than that every concept I could think to hit mid-string I did hit. We experimented alot I guess.

THANKS everybody, you guys made for a great trip to montreal. If the montreal jam doesn't happen at the same time my exams are taking place, I will try and make it for sure.

Starting with a quote,
Today a kid in school commented on my g-units. "Yo, why you cut up yo shoes like that?"

BECUASE I CAN!
I really hope that in actuality David Clavens said that, in a very, well, agressive-poet style.

For footpack needs, I've got a few things on my mind.

In Sessions I need to concentrate more. I thought a bit tonight, read successful peoples blogs, trying to figure out what makes their brain let them footbag so well. That was very unsuccessful, as Jorden/Dave don't really show that side of themselves, at least in the early years of their blogs. So, I concluded that obviously I am putting in the time for footbag, I just think that if in the session I played a bit smarter vs harder, I might get places quicker. More quickly.

Another thing I might try a bit more often is, making videos, asking opinions etc. I asked Dave today how toe blur can be done easiest, since tripwak is in fact, an easy move. He said posture is a big thing, and aunt-jemima knows that my posture during footbag could use a broomstick up the spine, so maybe tomorrow when I try it I could have a complete new toe blur. Hope so.

I am really really excited for, next month. I should be getting an automobile and drivers liscence, which means I can pay Johnny, Tom and Jorden visits MUCH more regularily. Time flies by, so I imagine it will seem like tomorrow that I can make that happen.

Whirling swirl->infinity->whirling swirl->infinity->string.

I have this horrible habit of expecting too much from myself during my Routine-Practise. I've watched many routines over the last month, and I know I don't have to have crazy-super-tripless 2 minute string, I need to have nice tricks with solid delays to catch my breath.

Too bad I still drop my footbag(s) during it. I dropped a ss mirage today on my fourth trick, and then I did the next 1:20 seconds dropless. :?

I stepped out of some barflies and pdx whirls too, which was nice. I rarely try to do it, but I figure that if I want to ever be good at stepping, I need to be able to do it out of anything.

Quantum is coming along. A few days ago I really started drilling it, and the first quantum I did today I thought was my strongside, then got confused, and realized I just did the perfect set on my weakside. The "I'm pushing my foot sideways upwards and outwards" quantum, instead of the "I'm hurling my foot infront of my body" quantum.

Footbag today was cool. I got home from a friends house, sat with my family for a bit while we watched some reality show, and then I went upstairs showered and got on a larger pair of shorts (so, still above knee-height, but longer than footbag shorts) and did some english homework. My family notified me then that we'd be going out and having dinner, and possibly a movie or something. I had time to footbag. Dave said spins and ducks would be something to practise, so wearing longer shorts, I didn't even have the change to do them! For some reason that was VERY cool, because it reminded me of summertime when you can just walk outside and play footbag...

Anyway, my routine is coming along, well, it has come I guess you could say, because I did it a couple more times with only a couple of drops. Seeing as I have to perform for my school in May sometime, I am sure it will be fine by then. Also, in August I'll have to do it for worlds, and if I don't have it SOLID by then, I guess you could call me a failure.

I've been trying to do more of the non-standard 4 adds in my strings lately. I figure if in the middle of one of my rather, 2-year-old-footbagger-trick-selection strings I can have these tricks down, it would be more refreshing for people to watch. Since I am no where near ready to throw blurriests and crazy whirl tricks mid-string, (although I guess I could if I wanted...but that would defeat a couple of purposes) I want some of these tricks.

Spinning was DOWN today. Same with Ducks. Yesterday I drilled zulu/weaving/ducking/diving way more than I ever have before, and my neck muscles ACTUALLY are sore. It lead me to think if I built those muscles up, if they would actually appear to be, muscles. My odd brain imagined a 6 pack on the back of my neck, but more of a two-long -muscles-down-the-back-of-my-neck-pack.

Some drills I worked today.

Spinning clipper->ducking clipper*rpt->gyro clipper->diving clipper*rpt
Gyro clipper->gyroclipper->duckingclipper->*rpt

My gyro clippers aren't quite as straight as my spinning clippers. I think I do more of a reverse-osis style set, because that is how I started drilling Gyro 4 months ago. Stupid me. One of my sisters friends is on our phone, yelling and crying at one of her 'friends'. What do you do about that :?:
I haven't heard a 14 year old girl cry about someone hanging up on her since, ever maybe?

I threw some blenders and infinities into spinning drills too. Drifters as well, but I find that I release my drifter way to early, or just to snappy, which makes gyro clipper alot more natural than spinning clipper.

Sorry James, (if you are reading this) I completely forgot to drill Gyro Clipper with no plant until I started writing this.
=======

The rest of this week I spent getting all excited to go to Toronto to play footbag. JOhnny and Jorden even were going to show up, so instead of drilling I was doing alot more strings, trying to fit harder stuff into them. I found this funny, as well, I don't have to impress them, so why do I feel the urge to, you know, try and do harder shit? I was trying to put a whole bunch of barflies and pdx whirls into strings, and I noticed that I was doing far more osis bails than usual, because my balance was always off. So, even if I got a bunch of those tricks in one string, I am sure it looked like shit.

Which brings me to my next point, how come barflies and pdx whirls put me off balance? I am setting as straight up as I can, and moving my body accordingly. So I figure it must be in the catch of the footbag. If I do play with Jorden/Johnny tomorrow, which I hope I can make happen, then I hope to ask them.

Most confidence building trick of the day,

Pdx drifter-ducking clipper-vortex bsos. 4 strings of it.

I am reading Jay!

No matter what anyone says, gyro clipper is way cooler without the plant.
:wink:

Playing in front of great players always makes you want to try your hardest stuff. Plus they really know what they're doing. I reckon you'll have a great session :)

Glad to hear your progress, looking forward to playing with you at GRASS and/or MSJ

The plan is more or less, meeting Jorden at the YMCA a couple blocks from his house. I am likely going to get a drive there, and then meet at Jorden's house. If he has to pick you up from the Go station then maybe I'll just head straight to the YMCA. I'll call both of you before Saturday just to clear things up, and where/when we are doing stuff.

Also, if I were you I'd bring a camera, because modified seriously needs a new Jorden/Johnny video. I told Jorden to bring his too, the more the merrier I guess. I would have absolutely no problem filming you guys, but of course playing would be the first priority.

Um, Julian (germany) asked me to make another update video for him, like I often do. So, because this blogpost is a useless one for Johnny, I'll throw it here so that you guys can well, not feel like you wasted your minute or two reading this.

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=fq5TOWuDYpU

And of course the best stuff didn't make it to youtube ;) I was tired as hell from a long weekend, and I'd rather post the harder stuff if it looked good, not sloppy/tired. I mean, do you see how many infinities and ducks are in the strings? It never hit me that when you are tired your style changes that much.

Hey Jay.

Your style has improved TREMENDOUSLY since NYJ. I enjoyed that vid. Pixie Muted Swirl is really hard and you made it look really easy. Props.

Good posture on everything too.

Dude, nice shred. If you're playing with Jorden and Johnny, definitely make sure you get tips on your game from both of them. I don't know about Johnny, but I know Jorden has thought about the best way to hit almost every trick he's ever done. So, if you're doing something wrong, he can tell you.

If I had to give you advice on your game, it would be RELAX. You look really stiff when you play. Just let it flow man! :D

Overall, good stuff. Keep it up!

Today was awesome! A tad chilly, but way better than the last 4 months in Canada.

I feel compelled to do a short write-up of today, because I don't see other footbaggers that often, so I will Smile

Friday Night: Call Johnny, and try to set anything up that I can. We agree that it would be the most conveinent to meet around 11:00 so that we would have ample time for Shred. I post in the FAT thread, and wake up to see that a bunch of other Footbaggers are interested too!

Saturday: So, I get a drive to the GO bus station that my town conveinently has, and massage a few footbags until my silent 1:15 journey in the depths of bus 02914 was over, (I COMPLETELY made that number up) and walked outside of the GO bus station downtown toronto. I was about 45 minutes early, so I went to walk inside some massive transit type building, and then amble out because the lack of people that thought the building was as interesting as I was.

I walk out, and see none other than TOM MOSHER, who I had NO idea was coming today, across the street. Little did I know before today, but Tom Mosher has the keenest set of eyes that the world ever did see. He just instantly saw Jon Haber walking at least 200 meters away, before I even looked in the direction. He claimed that his phone vibrated, but it was just killer-instinct.

We walked to a Bike Store for Tom and Haber's Fixies, and meet up with some eccentric salesman. According to Tom all bike store owners/employee's are strange, and some of them just creepy. I didn't find this hard to believe, because my local "Up-Your-Bike" owner is fucked. Anyway, Jon then accumulated some blue tires, which he threw around his shoulder all the way through toronto. Pretty nice set of hoola-hoops according to the population of Toronto.

We get back to Union to find Mike and Johnny, which felt cool. That "I don't see these people but every couple of months," feeling. I'm sure 99% of you, well, not FAT Wink but, 99% of anyone else knows this feeling whose been to a tournament. We press the on button to get onto the sunny side of the street, and walk to Ryerson University; Dundas Square had security prepared for about 5000 asians. No joke.

We find Alex along the way, and go to a Greenhouse/Sauna hallway above some cool grass and tiles 30 feet below, and get ready for Footbag. I warmed up with Mike and he gave me alot of compliments, which I don't often hear. It felt really sincere too, so it meant alot. Mike is a cool guy, and I'm happy I know him; I mean, I see him twice a year, but you can just tell that he's awesome. I hear he's getting married, so apparently more than one person thinks the same way.

Alex busted long tiltless strings, and mike drilled ducking clippers like crazy. He will overcome his record soon, he was consistantly around 5 I think every time. Anyway, Tom Johnny and Mr. Jon Haber played, well, played literally. Handstands were of the essence, and Jon RUINED his knee on the wall somehow. I am pretty sure my knee's felt it through his knees, and I felt really bad even though I had done nothing to cause it. He shook it off because he is a tank, but it must have hurt. Johnny shredded alot, I should mention. Some of his strings were just, super styley. I am not sure if he cares for me saying these things on modified, but I will because it is a shame no-one knows it except for him and I.

Whirr->Whirling Blender->almost spinning swirl.
Rubberman->blubberman. He stringed in and out of them.
To grasp the awesomeness of this combo, I feel everyone should watch a new born child say his first word.
Barfly->high plains drifter.

I know it isn't intense or anything, but watch Johnny do it and you will know what I mean.

So, Tom Mosher played footbag too. He hit FLUX like BUTTER. Some would say that it *ahem* may have not been butter, but Tom convinced me anyway. They had a handstand contest, Where Tom came first, Johnny second, and Jon third. I played footbag. Johnny and Alex also had a mirage race around a "track" and somehow, they rounded a curve and ended up just sprinting.

I did some tricks I guess, I really wanted double spinning clipper. I probably tried both sides about 30 times interwoven throughout the day, and I footed it (as in, it hit my hip and I sole kicked it) once. I got about 5 of them to land just 1 centimeter shy of my dear foot, which was depressing. I gave up because, last week I just hit double spinning toe, so, why not take a break and just, learn it instead of trying so much that you hit it by a mistake? I think I played just about as good as I should have. Sometimes I wish I tried for more variety, but it was cold enough that I didn't want to be too ballsy....

We packed our shit up, after Johnny hit some crazy stuff, really close to what must have been a 14 add move, the extra 2 adds for style, and went to Quiznos. Quiznos was tasty, and by recommendation from Johnny I got the Chicken Cabornara(sp) which was, unplacable. I am not sure what the sauce would be best described as, unless the more cultured people of this forum know that Cabornara is the sauce itself.

Tom and Jon are just funny together, especially because they have a seperate bike world to relate through. Johnny Mike Alex and I added intermitantly, but Tom/Jon really made it a sweet 20 minutes at Quiznos. Your mom jokes were explained, hobo's ALMOST pissing on the side of the street were observed, and I can't do any of the jokes justice on an internet forum. Shit.

We went home.

As for the Jay-Boychuk blog exclusive, here is some of the stuff I hit...

Drifters, pdx and gyro around everywhere.
A bit of nuclear,
Spinning, which I was happy to bail with.
Pixie, atomic, fairy and quantum.
Quantum was the crappiest out of all of them. Grunt.
Blenders, Dyno's and Refractions.
Swirls. Ripsteins.
Wow, Ripstein sounds like such an epic name. Say it,
Got some furious in 3 runs, two of it was Jani on my strong side.
Phoenix, fairy ducking butter, and ripped warrior bsos. THe last fairy ducking I tried twice, but I just wanted to get it.
Some barfies too. Pdx whirls. Blagh.

Footbag is going well, actually, upon close reconsideration it has been going ok.

I have been drilling fundamentals and, just tricks that should be staple alot. Alot of repetitions, alot of drills, and a bunch of 30 second breaks because of exhaustion. It all started about a week ago when I said to myself, after the FAT session ''How am I going to significantly improve my game from this session, to G.R.A.S.S?'' and while I was pretty consistent at that session, there were certain times when I thought to myself ''Why did I infinity that, not ripwalk?'' etc. So well, I guess you could say I am ironing out a few BOPS here and there.

I got a new puppy, female, Pepper, who takes up some time though. Little doggie is awesome and all, but it is also quite the responsibility. I can't say I am surprised though, it just sucks when you have to put her in her room (Laundry...) so she doesn't decide that defacating all over the place is a goood idea. Then she cries through your entire session, but you know that if you give in all she is going to do is associate crying with getting anything she wants.

Peachy.

I meant to drill atomsmasher b2b today. Shit. I am going to my friend Liam's house today, and he shreds every so often, so perhaps I'll drill them there.

Knee: So, I am not entirely sure how it happened. For some reason, the inner edge of my knee cap is ''bruised''. I did not smack it on something, and I didn't suddenly injure it playing footbag. It makes me think 'Ok, well, then I hurt it over time', but I played footbag for the last couple days hitting a variety of tricks, and it isn't like one movement is causing me any pain. In fact, I play painless. It just feels weak when I try to sit up from a chair or something like that. Weird. If it is better tomorrow, after today's footbag then I'll keep on drilling daily, but if it isn't maybe it would be best to rest. But, footbag doesn't hurt at all, so, like, growl. I just want to at least play as I am NOW at GRASS, not take a break and go backwards or anything.

Speaking of grass, I am going to start the prize bag. So, fairwell dear blog readers. I find it really neat how, drilling the basics makes completely unrelated concepts easier.

88% English, 86% History, 85% Calculus, and don't know Physics. I hope I can get my physics mark above an 85%, so that my midterm report card in a couple of weeks allows me to get accepted to Waterloo University...85% admissions average...

Some things I was hitting yesterday, which I shall continue to drill for the next couple of years....

Barfly->barfly->barfly->barfly...

Atomsmasher->Atomsmasher->Atomsmasher->atomsmasher.

Pdx whirl->Pdx whirl->pdx whirl->pdx whirl.

Blender->Blender->blender->Blender.

Far swirl->far swirl->far swirl->far swirl.

pdx drifter->pdx drifter->drifter->pdx drifter->pdx drifter->drifter.

Nuclear same clipper*2-> infinity->nuclear same clipper*2->infinity.

I also hit...
My first series of stepping to barfly and barfly to stepping tricks. They were really easy to step out of surprisingly...New cool links :)

Whirr, ripstein, whirling swirl, both sides, in two seperate strings. Got my first whirr bsos too. Thanks to Will Diggs for showing me how to do Whirr at GRASS. (which is, symp whirling set, plant and bend support knee, push up with support knee, clipper. Hardly any dex movement)

I need to get my quantum set where my atomic is...

hi jay. you're getting really good at the bällchen-spiel. have not trained for a few weeks. busy with my thesis and the puppy (smilla, australian sheperd) katrin and me have since three weeks. getting into footbag again when i have more time on my hands. what kind of dog do you have? you're right, being responsible is strenuous(?). but it's so much fun seeing her grow.
markus got something wrong with his miniscus(?). was in hospital and won't play for the at least 4 month... :(
hope to hear from you in the summer. all the best, matthias
