Nice highlights, Kevin. Props on Rubberman. I'm happy to see you're getting Mobii pretty easily now. And Alpine Legbeater is awesome.

Unfortunately, now I must deliver sad news for me... Traveling to Boston just isn't going to work with my schedule :( I've been wanting to go so badly, but it's not looking too hot. I will definitely let you know if anything changes.

Keep kicking dude.

you dont scare me danklas, I think ill be able to hit strong midstring soon enough.

Thanks for the props nick. Mobius is actually pretty easy for me on my strongside, I just don’t hit it with the confidence I know I can. Gotta say imma be pretty bummed if you don’t come out to boston jam, I need to see all the great stuff your hitting in person.

i have been playing footbag for 3 years this month. Working on a big post but i gotta go to the gym with kevin so heres some quick ass highlights.

-ripwalk>stepping whirl rpt
-gyro symp whirl
-blur>symp mirage>symple butter rpt. lol.
-ripped warrior>ps whirl both sides

beentown.

not even. i hurt my knee lifting and then shred aggravated it and this jam fucked it up even more. However, it feels alot better today and i need to chill with the jolly green at least one more time before he leaves us forever so probably tommorrow or something.

So the jam. Going into this weekend theres a shit ton of stress. I had been doing jury duty for the past two weeks so by the end of the week i'm pretty brain drained. My knee had also been hurting and i had been playing really good the past few weeks so i figuered that streak would come to an end when it mattered if i played well. Also, half the east coast and their fathahs bailed on a jam that we pretty much could have held whenever so i was pretty upset about that.

Anyways

Friday:

I started my day off in boston at federal jury duty for the case I was on that ended yesterday. My sister fucked up and was in town as well so I couldn't get a ride back to my house after leaving boston so my friend tony scooped me, after green things we went food shopping for the jam and I dropped off tony and picked up michelle and we headed for boston. The ride to petes was pretty easy and in no time I was trying gyro zulu In the church at petes parents house while his nephews whipped my bag at the celing whenever I dropped it :/ around this time douglas arrived and we quickly indulged in nerdy footbag conversations until it was time for food shopping where I got rashed on for my bagging skills.

The rest of the night was mostly killing time for Nyfas arrival. I wanted to sleep asap to be as fresh as possible for Saturdays shred but it’s pretty tough to not have a beer with bruce dole around so after doing so I passed out with michelle in a room filled with people who all shared the same nerdy obsession with me. It's a great feeling.

Saturday Morning:

Day started off shakey with some drunk ass guy from a bar pete frequents waking everyone up 15 times trying to guy cigarettes and generally being a drunk fucking douchebag. "stop touchin ya selves" So much for making a good impression of footbag tournaments for my girlfriend but I digress. Everyone woke up (again) around 10 and various breakfasts were made and much chapelles show was watched. Kevin let me know that apparently he was too tired to not play footbag and would not be coming. fucking lame lonnie, dont be a pussy. We left for the event site around one o clock and after discovering both our original spots had zero parking and one was under construction, Dank and Ian found an ill spot by the beach and the shred was on.

Saturday Shred:

I rushed through my normal warmup by myself behind a wall because I didn’t want to get distracted by the urge to freestyle and because I figured If I start like I normally do I had a better chance of playing well. Jumped into a circle with Marc Strauss, whom I haven’t played with since before my second injury, my main n1gga boatz and Waylon Lew. They had a really sick bear bag and they are cool people to play with so even with bruce dole himself and pete playing in this circle sometimes I made sure I stuck with dave and the bearbag. I like playing with Dave and Bruce a lot because as much as I love blur>dimwalk rpt I’m a sucker for all of the weird shit these two can do midstring.

I also think playing with dave and bruce makes me feel way less pressure so I just sort of shred and don’t think about it. Notable stuff from this circle for me was gig first try into a string, blurry torque first try into a string, first royal assassin into a string and just generally nice shufflely runs that I was happy with. At one point while I was stringing marc asked if I could do blurrier so midstring I hit step clip>rip>deepest blurrier I’ve ever hit>keep stringing. Was super stoked that I hit a move I the 3/5 deep midstring on call, Marc said it looked awesome and that felt really good. Waylon hit a few unsealed phoenixes and was trying some hard stuff. Dave was killing it though, long, stylely runs with flyers, spinning, double downs, twirls, terrages, barrages, torques just a grab bag of styley tricks, rev whirlwind midstring, rev gig (I think?) DUCKING SYMPLE REV SWIRL holy shit I will never hit that I think I screamed when I saw it, so awesome props dave.

Marc played pretty well too, he hit a pretty deep superfly and some long strings. At Somepoint during all this nasty nate arrived and it was cool meeting him for the first time. Tried not to bug out in fanboy mode. After everyone was warm, I started to ice my knee and then comps began……

thanks for the props nick, alpine beta blur is exactly what it sounds like. stepping ducking ps mirage or backside spike hammer.

Currently tucked in a corner at the library at my small community college listening to the levitate ep by Paper Diamond and drawing a pool table on AI. I think that “From Now Till….”, “Imagine The Possibilities” and “Steady Swinging” are the 3 best tracks on the EP. Other then long dense strings, spacing out for hours on illustrator listening to music like this is the most zen thing. Look into paper diamond, it’s free so you have the means and who dosen’t love kanye samples?

I hope once I get a graphics job in the real world im allowed to listen to headphones.

I’m writing this entry because I don’t know where im going with footbag. My knee, or whatever it is that is wrong with my leg still hurts a month later and I’m reflecting on the positives and negatives of continuing to play footbag. A lot of people on hit me up even people I don’t know and have never kicked inquiring about why I would want to quit or am considering it. I don’t know if writing about this type of thing makes me selfish but I kinda want to flesh out my own thoughts and my own footblog is a fairly appropiate place to do this. If you stick with me for the duration of however long this is, I want you to ask yourself if you would continue to play footbag, seriously, if faced with these things. not because i feel bad for myself or because I hate people that are freaks and can play everyday healthy, but simply Is it worth it?

Before Nyfa 2010, I was playing stupid amounts of footbag. I would play every Sunday in boston for 2-3 hours with pete and doug and ben little, then play outside at north station, then at my house, then in my basement once it got too dark to shred outside. At school I would play an hour before my first class, kick during gym for 45 minutes, sometimes during random points in the day and then finally by myself outside, at the y or in my basement. This lasted for most of spring 2010 because after hitting gauntlet and getting props from so many people, my ego grew and I wanted to be david clavens.

At nyfa that year, drew m. told me that in 3 years I could be as good as dave if not better if I just played everyday. My leg killed all weekend but I knew that once I was home this is what I would continue to do. That didn’t happen. My shin never stopped hurting, even a month after nyfa in one specciffic spot so I knew I had to see a dr. who said I had a deep break in my shin and that I was to be out of hack for at least the summer and had to wear a fucking robot leg brace. By august, I still felt that I had no end in sight. I got really depressed and started smoking more and distanced myself from my friends and girlfriend and chilled with the wrong people. School started and I began playing once a week in mid september with kevin and hit lots of new tricks both sides and started to feel the love for shred to come back.

didn’t play much in october other then a few times in boston and my doctor set the date for my comeback november 8th. On that day I played about 5 hours and had an amazing session. I missed one day of shred that entire month and quickly I was back to where I was (and better) then at nyfa jam 4. December 9th, my 19th birthday and barely a month after getting cleared, my other shin hurt and after taking a few weeks off i knew that the pain in my shin wouldn't let up. This is where I fucked up the most. Did every non injectable substance under the sun, fucked up with my girlfriend, wasted all of my money and fucked up in math the first semester of college. I saw my doctor in febuary or late january and the x ray showed another fracture and I was back in the brace for another 5 months.

I was so angry I only could shred for one month after waiting nearly six it killed me. I had a bunch of tests done that confirmed that I had a bone density deficiency disorder which just made me feel worse. Daryl genz, that kid cody who plays barefoot from texas and a few others stopped in boston and all I could do (if I showed up) was watch and feel sorry for myself, which is wrong. I snapped out of it and decided that if I’m going to improve my life and play footbag at all, I had to eat healthy, stop making bad decisions and go to the gym which up to this point I’ve been pretty successful with.

I hit up 2 (and helped throw 1) jam this summer, got my gf (and swagger  ) back, played at the highest level I ever have as of a month ago, placed well and hit hard stuff in a jam in a city I love surrounded by my favorite people and did well in school last spring. This is all good but now my knee has been hurting for a month and im conflicted.
You ever worked you ass off at something, only to have to stop doing it for six months, do it for one month and then rpt that, come back and have to build back up all over again? Let me tell you it sucks. At least I don’t have cancer or aids or something, but I’ve put my life into footbag and im wondering how much I really got back. I adjusted my whole way of playing this summer. 5 hour sessions in my basement were no more. 3-4 days of shred with sessions that weren’t epically long and filled with 3,000 furioius sets per side. Got new shoes, never played when it hurt. Went to the gym 2-3 days a week to make my legs strong, took mad supplements to make sure my bones don’t snap, only to end up getting hurt again right when I feel like I’m on the verge of a breakthrough.

What the fuck is that? I know it sounds like im bitching but I want to know what the point of continuing to play godamn hacky sack is if I can’t just play. I don’;t want to be david clavens anymore, I’ve known that for a REALLY long time. That’s fine but I don’t want to be peter bowler either who plays like 3 times a month, no matter how good he is. but why can’t I be kevin hogan playing 3 times a week trying to be as good as I can be? Is my form really that bad that it literally breaks my bones every time I reach a breakthrough? Why play if I can’t just be myself?

That’s why I play, because I like hitting the tricks I hit. I like having ripped warrior be easy and long shuffle and ps whirls and blurry drifters and all that good shit. Footbag just isn’t fun for me when I cant at least work towards these things. No point in playing tiltless forever for me. I like being me and feeling the flow of the bag chilling with my friends hitting good stuff with lots of high fives.

But heres where the positive side kicks in.

Spellcheck isn’t working and this is a long post so here sthe first portion. Gonna update immediately.

I didn't expect it to get cut off right when it was gonna get positive. Hopefully it gets continued soon. I have some thoughts, but I'll wait til you're completely done.

Also, maybe you should talk to Erik Chan. He's the closest situation to what you've described.

On the flip of that, footbag is so ingrained in me its not even funny. My ideals, worth ethic and plenty of other things are derived from footbag. Not a day goes by where I don’t airshred a blurry torque or a whirring swirl. Checking modified compusively makes so much sense. Day dreaming about mobius>barroque rpt is nothing new. Always wanting to better my shred game turned into the same way I try to better my life. These days I feel like anything is accomplishable (word?). I spend hours working with illustrator/ps/id so I can be the best graphic designer I can be. I don’t think I would be anywhere at all honestly If It wasn;t for hack. I had no motiviation, no idea what I wanted to do with my life and pretty much just wanted to smoke and play video games forever 3 ½ years ago.
I think like most footbaggers i tried a bunch of other hobbies, guitar/drums, wrestling, online hacking skating whatever but footbag is the one that really stuck with me. Shredding is just such a genuine feeling, I always feel like even on bad sessions that I’m working towards something and pete and doug will still recongize my progress.

Also theres just pete and doug in themselves, I owe them a lot. I can honestly say I would never play footbag if I didn’t think pete was cool when I first met him 3+ years ago. I thought it looked stupid as hell from the videos I saw but actually seeing mobius and blurry whirl and osis and all that in person from a person who seemed similar to me made me want to be able to do the same. I met pete on here and met him in person on the boston commons with two hacker friends who weren’t nearly as impressed as I was. I remember telling my friend nate that if I could hit osis then I would retire. Playing with doug for the first time was the same way. I wanted the confidence and control they appeared to have over the bag. I don’t think just any one would have inspired me to play with such a force that I did those years, but pete and doug and ben motherfucking little helped me big time and I loved all of the positive feedback and funny shit that happened at our really early sessions.
It’s cool how things played out. I like trying to one up them with jani walkers atomic dlos and superflys and stuff in the same way they own me with surging, reverse swirls, variety and just about everything  they’ve helped me out with lots of stuff, I couden’t hit torch r rack to beat doug in circle if doug never taught me mirage. We chill together too, me and pete saw the wu, drank sometimes, and hung out after nearly every session. Although I’ve gotten tips from amazing players, things like “set this much higher” or “swirl a little more behind you” will never mean as much to me as the advice about the ups and downs of playing that pete has taught me. I know that if I never shuffle outside of north eastern with people that have always been older brothers to me, I won’t be happy.

There are people I havent seen in years or have lost contact with that I miss less then then a lot of footbaggers. I have many friends, but I only think kevin and a few others are my best friends. Pete and doug and tristan definetly belong there too.

Cause footbag is more then tricks. I’ll be really fucking sad if I never get to hang out with bruce and boatz and the rest of the nyfa ewoks again, if I never eat piquante pizza with matt k or hit drunken superflys on the roof with willy, or never shred and chill in times square with john goode again or hit whirling swirls with nick cat . If I don’t see jay talk to himself midstring or cringe at matt crosses crank. Or geek out over everything footbag with dave beyers or screw martin. Or give t money props on hard fives. If I don’t rash on mike toolan at every chance I get my life will suck because although I’ve only been to 5 or 6 jams, people who play footbag with me know me better then most people do in my normal life. I am the most me when im playing. Footbag is so geniune and universal and I am the most me I ever will be when i spend time with these people and giving that up sounds like it will suck….scratch that will one thousand percent suck will suck.

Plus theres so much to do. I haven’t shredded with the ceiling fan, or played with dave more then once or met penske or nick landes or justin dale or plenty of other people. I havent hit nemesis big apple or montage or blurry torque b2b and I know that someday, I could do those things one day if I wanted. Because that is what footbag has shown me. Anything can be done.

I never thought i would be able to hit all the fives i can do bs or have people say i inspired them (wtf watch some ansii i suck you pussies :)). I never thought that i could get as good as pete and doug ARE, and for all that i am greatful.

Thanks if you read my bitching. I love footbag, the people it has brought me and the times it’s given me. Thanks to everyone I’ve ever drank a beer with, smoked a bowl with, played footbag with, given/received a high five, rambled about life and music with and did’nt view me the way the rest of the world does. You’re my favorite peopple for sure. I
feel like the positive out weighs the negative but I don’t know how worth (possibly) building my game back up is a third fucking time. If something is torn in my knee, word up I’ll do anything I can to rebuild it to hit flip torch r rack, but I don’t know if I can handle a third stress fracture….but I also know that I cant handle being without those godamn blurry torques.

I'm glad i didn't retire after i hit osis.

kh.
