no, but then again, maybe. no, because since i started playing in climacools my body has felt great and the old pains footbag used to bring have stopped entirely. possibly yes, because my new ones are all redHenryG wrote:i think that these new satan shoes, climacools, have hurt you.
thanks for the support guys, but i think it'll be better to try not to think about footbag, so i plan to focus on the other parts of life, and try to put footbag out of my mind completely. i'm going to try
BRB, off to get better...

so i quit smoking... for like 2 days
yeah, for some reason i though it would be a good idea to quit smoking the week i had 2 big assignments due and my midterms started. perhaps not my smartest move ever...
needless to say i was super duper stressed, got into a fist fight with my boss, got a split lip (that's okay though because he got a black eye and a split lip), and almost lost my job. so i was sent home for the rest of day and the next day i had a meeting with him, the chef and the owners. they said i should be fired, but i won't be because my manager isn't pushing for it. the busy season is starting and they need me. And this is also my first "incident". i have been put on probation indefinately though. so if i do anything naughty i'm gone. so, yeah, i'm smoking again, but i think i'll make another attempt soon. tuesday is my final mid term so i'll try again after that. footbag is still a no go. the hip has been twinging a bit but not as frequent. i have been kicking alot at the bus stop and during my spares, but i haven't done anything harder than clippers, legovers, atw's, mirages, swirls and flappers. i have some free time headed my way, so i plan to make some appointments to see some specialists.
over and out.

I need to quit smoking too. Hopefully you can get back into footbag shape. It sucks for anyone to have to deal with that sort of thing. Good luck!

Oh and Andrew if you're going to stop smoking, as you've probably noticed, you'll be a bit stressed out. To relieve that stress there's only one way to go about it I think: sports. Maybe something more constructive than "Workplace bare-knuckle fist fighting"... do some weights, swim, run whatever till you're EXHAUSTED. Just my 2 cents!

last week i had one isolated session simply because i couldn't not play any longer. did alot of spins, worked on some ducking, some light dexless. i'm uber rusty, some things i used to have dialed we just not happening, like blenders and drifters, but other things i used to have serious trouble with were super easy, like symp whirls and swirls. my old symp whirl record of 2 got smashed. i hit 5 good sidea and 4 flip
weird. i stayed away from shuffle for more than 8 or so contacts and focused more on incorporating a variety into my strings. i hit some realy stylish stuff in my opinion. since i'm not a stylish player, but more of a technical player this was really cool to me.
some high lights:
-pdx blender> drifter> spinning osis> symp whirl> far symple swirl
-blurry pickup> muted pixie same osis> muted stepping same blender
-symp whirling swirl bsos
-whirling swirl> far symple swirl> mobius
-and old fave--> tapping legover> dso> dso> tapping legover
-blurry drifter> pdx drifter> flurry
-blurry whirl> mobius> far symple swirl
-far symple swirl> far symple swirl
i thought i was on the road to recovery because the day after there was no pain at all. i was really stoked on that. i felt good through the next day, and the next day as well. monday though i went from nothing to full sprint for about 100 yards to catch my bus and since then it's been painful and sore again. damn, so close.

Fourandahalfmonthsandcounting...
It's been a while since i've had time and the ability to sit down and have a good look 'round on modified. Most of my online time recently has been done at work, because i haven't had an internet connection at home and i forgot my school password. The few times i have been online at work have been pretty sketchy, since only managers are allowed in there, and i've had to break in. In recent weeks i pushed a bunch of quarters into the catch so when you close the door it will stay shut but it dosen't latch very well, and no one seems to have noticed. give it a hard shoulder and it pops right open, much easier than using a spatula and a butter knife to work my way in...
so i guess i'll do a little recap of the last 2ish months and get my legions of fans (hahaha) back up to date...
Not much to report on the injury field, i'm still being super conservative about how i move my body and i'm trying to avoid fast movements and odd positions that might set off another recession. on the up side, i'm feeling pretty good. i haven't had any hip or groin twinges in about 3 or 4 weeks now. i can do all my basic daily living activites without any pain or discomfort so i guess that is progress.
Since my internet connection got cut off i have found it much easier to not think about footbag. which is what i wanted after all. it's easier to get through my day with out running combos through my head when i should be listening to my class lectures. I think alot of this because i got involved in another activity.
I started spinning again, and i'm just having a grand old time! i used to spin records back in like '98. i must have been about 13. any way, back then a friend of mine had bought some turntables, ended up never using them and decided to sell them. at the time i didn't have the money to buy them off of him, but he let me keep them at my house untill he found a buyer. i had them for about 4 months and had started amassing some skills when he finally sold them. ever since then i had wanted to get some decks but always had some thing more pressing to do, like buy fencing equipment, go on trips, new skate decks and snowboard gear, a car, etc...
In high school i got into a hip-hop crew and got on the decks from time to time when i wasn't rhyming. we used to do tag team hous parties where one guy would spin untill he wanted another beer, or to talk to some one, or what ever, and would tag some one else from the crew in.
Any way my friend fijola (AKA Dj Polly From Farside Records who was one of our sponsors at the tournament and was our DJ) came to work one day and told me it was time i got some decks, and she gave me her old mixer, which is really nice BTW. I pretty much had no choice but to go out and buy some decks.
Any way, i'm spinning a solid mix of dark and funky breaks, leaninng heavily to the electro side of things. for what ever reason i'm not really into vocal stuff that much. i'm starting to make little ventures into DnB because it's pretty fun and easy to spin.
Polly wants to bill me for a gig next month but i have enough trouble in the basement with friends let alone a heaving dance floor. Plus i just don't have enough vinyl (but that's changing much to the displeasure of my bank account). if some one played one of the tracks in my crate that really limits me.
my current favorite tracks are as follows in no particular order...
Evil Nine Feat. Aesop Rock- "Crooked"
BreakFastaz- "Free Fall"
Breakfastaz- "The Pressure"
Plump Dj's- "Blackjack"
Soul Lions(?)- "Snow Over Arizona"
(?) vs The Prodigy- "Smack My Bitch Up" Remixes (edit: i LOVE mysterious white labels!)
Cut n Run- "Breaks Lock Up"
Jan Francisco- "Infatuation"
for those of you who like hip hop check that evil nine track, it's a good cross over, plus who doesn't like aesop rock?

I don't.
But, that is still awesome. I've always admired people who could spin vinyl well. Do you have any recordings of yourself scratching/mixing?
Oh, and got a DJ name?
G/l with your injury. Injuries are really dumb, but you get through them.

i have one i did last week at a friends place, because i don't have the soft wear or hardwear on my computer. it's only 20 minutes long and it's pretty good except for a key clash between track 6 and 7 which i totally didn't notice untill i listened to it after. i don't know if i really want to post it. maybe i will post a new mix once i get high speed internet again.Stephen Barnes wrote:that is still awesome. yes i have a tentative one. my mixing style is pretty abrupt, i prefer cuts to blends (but that's quickly changing as i am getting better at longer progressive blends) and a friend said "your style is like, beat match it, line up your bars, lube it up and slam it in there." so my current dj moniker is Spit'n'Shuv...Stephen Barnes wrote:Oh, and got a DJ name?
Book me to spin at your footbag after party, wedding reception or batmitzvah now! My calendar is filling up!
wow, i just realized all my monikers are sexual...
thanks. i am going to try a very very light session on monday. like tiltless with butterflies and osis.Stephen Barnes wrote:G/l with your injury. Injuries are really dumb, but you get through them.
okay, well i didn't really cover much after getting decks so we'll continue with catching up shal we?
Almost all of my focus has gone into school which has been great! i got straight A's last term (well to be honnest i got a B+ an A and 2 A+'s so that evens out to straight A's in my head). Things have been going really well in all my classes. My biggest fear going into uni this year was about my writing. i used to be a really good writer and i was afraid that a 2 year break would have dulled my skills and then going to write university papers would be really difficult. i was pleasantly surprised to get my first paper back with a 97% and have the top mark in the class! I think it was probably a result of working on it really really hard and it payed off where as the others in my class probably didn't put in nearly as much effort. either way it worked out really well for me.
christmas was fine. i got alot of cloths, which is good because i always spend what money i have on every thing BUT cloths! the only real kick in the face was my sister got me new shred shorts, knowing full well i can't use them untill i heal. her heart was in the right place, and she has a good eye. they are climacool shorts in the exact same colour as my new shoes, so i'll be all matched up and what not when i get to bust them out! sweet!
so i get this eamil from a reporter for the University of manitoba newspaper saying, "i heard about you from a friend of yours and i was wondering if you wouldn't mind doing an interview about footbag."
i was totally up for it and we did a phone interview which was great! she asked really interesting questions and we talked for about 45minutes-ish. And the end she asked what school i went to and sheepishly told her U of Winnipeg. I said i guess she'll have to focus on the other guys. She seemed confused. i asked if she had gotten incontact with erik or derek who go to the u of m, but she hadn't so i hooked her up with their numbers an e-mails. she asked if i could give her some international contacts so i hooked her up with a couple e-mails of guys i really enjoy hanging out with and havebeen in the scene for a long enough time to notice the changes. at the end she put out a really great article that took up an entire page. great exposure because a couple days after the paper came out i was introduced to some friends of friends and they said "OHH, you're the FOOTBAG guy from the paper!" and it really blew me away that people read it. AND that they were now calling it footbag!!!
New years, all my plans fell through and i ended up staying home with the family. the first time i have done that in 7 years! it was alot of fun too, we played some games and watched a movie. i stayed up having my own little party in my room spinning untill about 3am.
the only person from the footbag world is scott ellenberger (our big local net guy) at various bars and shows and stuff, and jess once when she wanted to buy another tee shirt. any way from talking to her it sounds like she has been playing solo 3-4 days a week, which is huge. she's hit magellans both sides, pixie legovers are getting easier now (and she's had pixie sets chest high!), drifters and is working on whirls. oh she's also hitting spining clippers and ducking clippers more consistantly and smoother! i am so stoked that some one still acctually plays in this city! i tried calling mark to see what is going on with his school program but he hasn't gotten back to me. i called josh as well but he never called back either. bummer.
and now we are all caught up i guess. i'll see all you guys and gals again in a couple months...
