Just did the 10 minute trainer Cardio, Abs and Yoga Flex. I'm sticking to the "getting started" workout schedule that comes with it and 4 days in I haven't missed a workout. GO ME!!!
Although I didn't fully keep up with the reps cardio felt better today. I've been focusing on staying on the balls of my feet both in workouts and everyday movements. I watched the clip I filmed for the one shot challenge and it looks to me like I'm mostly landing on my toes. A second opinion would be great. Abs is still super tough. This was only the second time doing that workout so hopefully it will get better in time. My arms are so weak that I can't hold the plank position for very long. Yoga is relaxing all the ladies say it is. I would recommend it to all footbag players as a way to increase your flexability. It can hurt, but it's one of those good hurts.

Thoughts on DS
Thanks. Got some reading to do. I found the stuff describing the actual system on 4kast, but I was still looking for the modified discussion I knew would be so good.C-Fan wrote:Most of it happened here.sen wrote:Open, Shut? Down? What else has changed?

Edit: I'm going to throw my initial thoughts on DS here. I've read the first 3 pages on that thread. So far I mostly agree with DS. I LOVE open and shut. Down is also awesome. I think I'm gonna try to hit shut down again next session. The reason I like these isn't simply because the old names were "gay", "girlie" or "hippie." But because the new ones do, imo, describe what you are doing. Some people (Damon I think) argued that JOBS did a better job than DS. I disagree for the simply reason that I just came back from a very long break in which I was doing something else with a lot of terminology that clouded my mind. I forgot a lot of my footbag terms. When I came back i could remember if "in" referred to moving from in or if it was to in. Open and Shut are pretty clear on what they are doing. Down is a little different, but if you think about it, it works. Renaming one direction of atw makes sense too. Maybe the other sports that use the term will follow suit. What's wrong with being innovators? As far as history goes... I'd love to see what Kenny, Peter, Sunil and those before my time think of this. Hell, for the matter I'd like to know Vasek's thoughts. Or whatever that new world champ's name is. The list of developers and supporters of the system is impressive. A few opinionated modified users seem to be very vocal, but so far I have seen little to have me think this system is not worth the change.
One person's post saying that if someone was put off by the old terms (pixie, fairy, butterfly) then they are not a potential player anyways. I'm not sure what this meant. Then again the person saying it wasn't from NA and probably doesn't understand the stigmas related to this terms. Playing footbag throughout my high school years I can tell you that the jocks I went to school with would not touch the sport if they knew the very base of what was possible started with pixie, fairy, butterfly, and dragonfly. I don't think footbag ever had the hippy, pot smoking slacker stereotype in Europe. And if it did I don't think it stuck as hard. With a good portion of the world still being stuck with that stereotype I think any system that moves us away from it is good. I knew some great athletes in High School who caught on quickly to the little bit of footbag I showed them. Easily hitting atw and orbit in the first 15 minutes of touching a bag. But they had reputations to uphold back then. They were the kings of the school. Out there winning basketball, soccer, hockey, badminton games. They wouldn't be caught dead practicing their fairies in the gym.
Edit2: I've finished the thread now. Not that I have any different thoughts on the DS afterward. It seemed to turn into an Osis discussion. Although it was nice to see were the Damon/Ken osis battle I was greeted with when I returned to Modified came from.
What I got out of that whole thread was that every shredder has their opinions. Some are more vocal about them. I saw lots of players very vocal about their opinions who, while WAY better than me, are by no means top world players. I wish more of the best players past and present would present their thoughts on it. I also noticed a rift between NA players and the rest of the world. NA being more likely to favor the new naming system specifically. And further a rift in the NA players between those ready to take footbag in a new direction and those that want to cling to the history. I have no problem with history and wish it was clearly preserved in one way or another. But who can tell me who invented the term pixie? Fairy? DLO? Why don't we use Thunder and lightning? How can we say we need to stick to the old names when we don't really know where they came from. If the story is known please point me in that direction as I've seen a few fuzzy explanations but that's it. nothing concrete. Maybe some jerk walking by an early freestyle circle said, "Wow look at that fairy move! What a stupid hippy!" and the term stuck? I hope that doesn't offend anyone, that wasn't my point. My point is: What good is history without the story?
hey, I've been meaning to post in here to give you props on your drive to get back in shape, and to use footbag as part of that. Keep up the good work, I've been following along but haven't posted until now.
as for the whole DS thing... I'm of the opinion that as long as everyone can talk to each other about the game, it's all good. So, while I didn't see the need to take the effort to change what was in place already, if everyone adopts the new system it'll work too. Just like there are hundred of languages around the world, there's more than one way to talk about footbag.

Thanks Bob! Nice to see your still reading. I find it kind of funny that a few people read my blog. I've met very few people who post on Modified and I don't think the ones I have met read my blog. It means more than you know to know that a few people do read it. And Bob, it's great that you've got a few guys shredding with you now. I think when I last left you were soloing it most often. Nice to see you've found someone to pet your kitty.
I just finished my 10 minute trainers for the day. Cardio, Yoga Flex and Total Body. This is my 7th day. One week without missing any of the scheduled workouts. I'm pretty proud of myself. According to my phones workout app I've burned 4000 calories in the past 7 days. So why aren't I losing weight?? lol I'm sure it'll come. I had hoped to have a footbag session today, but my morning errands ran until after 2pm and I'm supposed to go to a friends in about half an hour so I'll try for tomorrow. I'm gonna stick to the specific schedule that came with 10 minute trainer for the first month and then I will start customizing it with some footbag sessions thrown in.

Week 2 of Ten Minute Trainer Started. Did Cardio, Abs, and Yoga Flex today. On cardio there was only one exercise that I didn't do full reps on and more that my reps were very weak.
After my three 10 Minute Workouts, I went straight into a footbag drill session. Taking a lesson from Bob's Blog I'm drilling 1-2 things at time. I think I'll do this as pretty much my only footbag playing for a little while. Today: BASICS. 50 each strong and weak Toe and Clipper stalls.
50 Alternating Toe Stalls.
50 Alternating Clipper>Hand catch.

50 alternating toe stalls.
Tried clippers without the hand catch and it didn't go so well. Will work on that.
Only about 10 minutes in Footbag today, but that's right after 40 in other workouts. Time to hit the shower.

Drenched.
10 minute Total Body, Abs, and Cardio.
Right after into a Drill session.
50 ATW on Strong Side
50 ATW on Flip Side
Osis>Osis
Spinning Osis strong
Switch>Mirage rpt
Also had a decent feeling spin on my flip. I've never been able to spin on my flip. I did my ATW drills 5 on one side at a time. Seemed to work well. Next time I play it's orbit drilling.

10 Minute Lower Body, Abs, Total Body. I switched to the blue resistance bands. I didn't think they would be as big a difference from the yellow as they are. While testing them out before the workout I wasn't sure I'd be able to do it, but I managed. I think I'll leave them on. Mostly it intensifies the arms workout.
22 minutes of footbag following the above the workout. I drilled Orbits in the same manner as atw earlier in the week. 5 strong, 5 flip. Orbits are way weaker for me. It took the whole 22 minutes to squeak out 50 on each side. With atw I was done in 11 and had a few other highlights to boot. Not once, strong or flip, did I hit all 5 consecutively. Either hand catches to reset or total drops. /sigh
In good news, I've lost 6 pounds since my last workout. GO ME!!!

I didn't mention it yesterday, but that workout marked the beginning of week three without missing a workout. Sadly the next two weekends are going to cause me to miss a few days. I've already planned to make sure I do some light workouts while I travel to visit family. Nothing as intense as I've been doing though.
