Thanks for the video for day 22 Jay. It was really great, especially the far swirl>ripstein>rpt....I watched it 10 times in slow-mo.

keep such good things coming.

haven't had time (and internet access) to watch your videos yet, but from what I hear they seem to be really good. Weiter so!

Hey Footblog. What's new?

well, a few things. I just came back from NYJ, got some new shoes, and need to start learning and drilling different tricks. While the basics are awesome, I sort of feel like my "toe shuffle->clipper downtime tricks->a few stepping/spinning toe tricks->toe shuffle->clipper trick" phase needs some spicing up. I think that maybe now is the time to start drilling the elements to add to downtime tricks, so that my strings have steady highlights. I don't think anyone really would like to watch any of my strings twice at the moment, and I'd like to change that in the upcoming year.

Things I'd like to drill in the future are....

Stepping->3/4 adds. Torques, drifters, whirls, eggs, flails, dlo's, blenders, reapers, and the blurry versions of course.

Which brings me to my next downtime challenge, grifters. Toe grifters are forgiving, and Anssi mentioned to me that perhaps the best way to get Grifter solid is to master them from clipper. Yesterday, during what I'd like to call a "Clown" session, I couldn't get ONE sticky awesome grifter from ss clipper. My clown session was that, all day I was wearing my lavers and then I warmed up in them. These lavers are black and SUPER snug from David Clavens. So, when I JUST couldn't handle the "new laver" sole anymore, I switched to gunits...Which are .5->1 size too big for me. The rest of the session I felt like a clown.

I am debating shaving off some of the sole, but I also don't want to ruin the shoe. I could just suck it up and walk in them everyday, but I also don't want to play in Gunits anymore. I feel though, that if I played in Lavers I would start having leg pains again, as after the 15 minutes in lavers yesterday my knees started to ache, and I could just tell the extra amount of TOE crank you have to use would make my shins hurt. I haven't had shin splints for 2 years, I'd like to not go through them again.

I might just use my brand new pair of Gunits that are also snug, so I don't have to use Clown ones. Then while this is happening, wear down my lavers from walking for the spring when I'd start to use them.

Stitching at times is more than un-rewarding, so I think I'll be happy to not stitch for another few months to a year. It was cool making a bag a day for a week+ though.

It is going to be weird dropping again. Like, when your string consists of solely 2 dexes from toe, 1->2 dexs from clipper it is pretty easy not to drop. Venturing into inconsistency land is going to feel immature I am sure. But imagine how much fun it will be to hit COOL stuff! I'm not imagining blurry torque->zooming death muffin, but more like, stepping ss dlo->fairy drifter->mobius type stuff. When the cleaver pumps out some cleavage like that, people pee a little.

NYJ's biggest highlight for me was the drive with Johnny/Rishell, the 18th floor hallway shred, and watching David/Johnny also have a session in the 18th floor. During the drive to and from Chicago, I got to know Johnny/Rishell a bit better, which was nice of course. Johnny keeps getting more and more badass as time goes on. The hallway shred I spoke of was when Matt, Zac and I played, with Eric Chang and Erik Chan watched. I'm not sure I hit anything mindblowing, but I think I can learn from it. Usually, when I play with people above or below my level, I can remain happy and eager to see what they are hitting, but playing with people around my level brings out the weird competitive side in me. I mumble and talk to myself alot, and I think I turn into someone else for a bit. The thing that I liked hitting the most was far rev swirl->swirl*rpt for the first time.

Dave and Johnny's drill session will be incredible. The only person who got all of it on tape is Eric Chang, and he is the only person who controls that footage. I suggest you butter him up if you want to see two sexy east coast behemoths dropping combos and busting that's what she saids.

Maybe I'll actually be competitive next time. :\

That was really disappointing on my end, probably should have rested more with you. :P

Dear Jesus, it is about time I started hitting more technical drills! They are the most satisfying set of accomplishments ever. As intended, the more dense/technical side of my game is what I would enjoy to see progress the most this year. I think I can hold off on trying to master whirlwind spender and whirlygig for a few years, and really get an interesting game before that.

The last few sessions I've been building up my stepping set, and I think soon I'll be ready for whirl war 2. I've got ripwalk->stepping ss whirl*rpt 8 contacts, within one session of schooling, and I'm pretty sure that sidewalk->blurry whirl will be my next session. A week more of schooling those, and I hope my dear legs will finally do what they have always wanted...Whirl...I'm just about to cross that line where I can say "I don't suck at whirl anymore" and I think when I hit that drill multiple times, I will be able to say I have crossed that line.

I'd be willing to bet Andrew T. Grant has hit that drill multiple times. Sly dog.

Tonight I got another new stepping drill, parkwalk->stepping ss dlo. That was really rewarding, because I started the session dropping on stepping ss dlo almost everytime, and then I progressed to butterfly->stepping ss dlo, and then once that was consistent enough I progressed to that repeat, and then I tacked on a pixie set and there it was. Tomorrow is Fog's turn with a dash of Dimwalk.

Here is a plug for Johnny Suderman footbags, as the one I used tonight is soo good. Just wash it with some moisturizing body wash, head and shoulders, and a bit of love and you'll be off to the races.

Grifter is proving to be a nasty new downtime move, but I've gotten a few drills with it. Tomorrow I might have a session with Jorden, so now that I CAN hit it perhaps I can ask him to point my knee in the right direction. Watching Anssi really helps them, because on my own I was doing them all wrong. I'm happy Olav is starting to kick again.

For the last 5 months, I think I played almost everyday. This year I'm going to see if I can get 312 sessions, which means 6 days of the week I'll kick. Since I've got a bunch of months of history behind me, I don't think this goal will be hard to accomplish. So far I've had 4 sessions in 4 days, so 4/312.

Dont play too much Jay, rest for 2 days a week.Better for your joints. My footbag marathons stressed my knees leading to an injury which toke time to heal and i dont do ps whirls or blurry whirls now too, its not the time yet.

Just my 2 cents.

Props on the drills, great combos!

Would anyone care for me to do a Vegas Jam writeup when it's done? As in, a multiple page experience thought for thought?

I really liked reading Nathan's style writeup of nyj, where he gave each person some words and still went through the event chronologically. It inspired me to start typing again.

+=-=+

Thanks for your thoughts Aleksi, I know that you're speaking with good intentions and I smiled about that fact.

On another note, Jorden still remains the coolest person in Hamilton that there ever was. I am very happy that he continually shares his experiences and thoughts with me when I inquire. He's a wise fellow.

+-=-+

On another note, I'm going to be flying to Texasland in February for Family visiting. The Austin crew (namely, Ben and Cody) really have a place in my footbag reality as they were a large part in me enjoying Worlds 2007 at all, which is still probably the most influential week of my entire life. My family isn't in Austin, but I really hope I can make something work while I'm 2->3 hours away from it.

I'm still avidly enjoying trying new and dozens of drops drills. I find more and more, that the secret to getting more consistent with stuff that is foreign or new to you as a footbag player, is to really delay and remain balanced throughout the trick. Hitting combo's where the last trick is barely a seal is starting to become a real tease, because [partially learned from example, DC] you should be able to hit the entire combo and play out of it.

I will read your Vegas Write-up however you decide to write it! I really wanted to be there!

PS: Are you going to take some footage while you're there? Would you make a sweet Vegas Jayum vid? Please?

Me thinks your getting good. We need to play. The Ontario connection is semi strong right now. If we could connect easterly and south westerly with centrally (Toronto) than I believe good things can happen. Ontario has dope talent. I feel like most of Ont's shredders might as well be on the moon because we never shred together. hmmm....

Well, it turns out that school is making me rather busy, and then with Anssi coming, and then midterms after that I can't justify the 1-3 hours it takes to write up a Jam. So, I guess I could just write a smaller one, but that would not serve the jam justice. Whatever, I'll just write certain sections of the jam before my next tutorial.

Walking up to the site, on Friday.

So, there I am, gunits on foot, Byrin on my side and Ben Skaggs+Rory pumping their brilliant calves up the stairs to the exact location of the Christmas Calendar of this year. I was excited as all hell to see what Byrin was up to, since I had heard such great things from Johnny about Hackrifice 10. Byrin, a new role-model, is quite like Erik Chan for those of you who don't know him. He has a soft tone, a great outlook and a really nice smile and style. You know how Byrin really stalls those gyro tricks? That is how he speaks. Just a gentle, nice way of expressing what is on his mind at the time. The fact that he looks like the Iron Man, also helps. I first see Zeb Jackson in rather long footbag shorts busting a trick or two, then I notice the windy gusts blowing leaves too-and-fro, and then I look to my right behind a few crates and PENSKE busted a ripwalk. First trick I saw him hit, and exactly the one I needed. Manna, a person I think most people are interested in meeting was also in his Circle. I hugged 'zee Eric Chang with a camera near-by and put down my stuff on the said Crates. It was time to do an everlasting warm up. This day, had a weird temperature and wind, where NO ONE Sweated, and no one every really got warmed up I think. Like, you know when it is super hot and humid and you are just grinding the sweat and footbag desires out of yourself? This did not happen on this day, and instead it felt like a day in the park. It was hard to get any good strings because of this, relaxed feeling. I wanted a sandwhich cut in halves.

The Key: So, between the hole in the chainlink fence that symbolizes the pathway between Ben's house and the Student Center where we would play on the second day, lies a mysterious black Key. The other 6 feet to my sides did not notice this key, but in preparation for this very moment, my posture had been horrible enough to notice a black key on black asphalt. This key had a website address written on it, "coraline.com" and that was all. How spooky. Rory, Ben and Byrin came up with some possible things that this key could do. Rory thought that it could serve as an advertisement for something, but seeing as it was in the middle of an alleyway that really didn't make sense. We went to an "omelet" place, which, to Canadians is thought to have a few more letters and none of us had an omelet. Rory got Lobster Eggs benedict, whamo friar tuck. I think we all started to get a little more comfortable with one another, and we had a more interesting chat than the day before. I liked this most of all.
So, once the days' sunny shred was done, with my new Quantums and terrible insoles in foot I felt as if I hadn't hit a single trick all day. And in fact, I didn't hit any tricks all day, I basically just did the motions of what a trick could be, and the bag stayed on the ground. It turns out that my quantum insoles had been pointing OUT on my clipper, which, coupled with bad crank just spit the bag off of them. Once I replaced the insole, I was in business. A new day had begun, and I checked the website address on the key. Turns out, "coraline.com" is the website address for a new movie coming out by some obscure author that RORY actually likes. Good call Mike. I checked it out, and apparently some girl on Flickr begged her cousin from Chicago, who also randomly found a key on the ground of an alley, to have the key. I feel special that it happened the way this did.

Sunday shred was neat, since it was really warm and sunny and everything just felt like that Anssi day 24 video. Just a relaxed, fun day of casual shred. Ben Skaggs and I drilled 90% of the time, which was cool. He is so above my level, but it was nice to relate to him like that. The only notable thing that comes to mind that I can express in the next 4 minutes before class (I wrote these paragraphs out of order) is that we did some synchronized stuff between Evan, Ben, Manna and I. We hit single tricks or small drills only to minimize the drop counts. Ripped Warrior took the longest, as Manna/I dropped here or there, but never in the same round, and both of us flipped from our strong->flipside just to see if we were more consistent either way. The ripped I have on the video is flipside. After the shred, we went back to ben's place and watched Jorden Shred. I can only appreciate more and more how good he is, and was 3 years ago.

School on monday was pleasant. For those who don't know, I flew out from Vegas at 11:40 PM on Sunday night, flew to cleveland, stopped over at 5:00 or so AM, and then to Toronto arriving at 9:00 am. The trick here was, that I would have NO sleep to speak of, be tired from the jam in general, have to pick up my car at a lot outside the airport, drive 40 minutes to Hamilton and get to class for 10:20.

So, I had a FULL, sweaty clothing laptop, footbag gear backpack and 3 shoeboxes of brand new Quantums and my old pair of Gunits dangling from my arms. I speed walked throughout all airports, and got many fumbling funny looks, since I had to go through so many pockets and procedures to get out passports and whatnot. Then when I responded to airport officials that I was coming back from a hacky sack tournament, they proceeded to say "They still have that?!?". I figured maybe perhaps I should have said I came back from a weekend at the slots and fondling strippers, and that would have gotten less funny looks towards my juvenile face.

When I got finished flying and eating nothing for many hours, I got in my car wiped off all of the snow and headed to good 'ol hamilton. I then noticed, that since I had not considered the time it would take me to find my parked car by transit, pay, and exit the lot I would be even more late for my FIRST tutorial in some important class. Not a lecture I could sly-ly creep into and sit down, but an interactive let's sketch engineering stuff lecture. Knowing I could receive a grade of zero if I was too late, on my first important tutorial, I decided not to go home, and instead park my car and go straight to class. Due to lack of sleep and poor judgment, I for some reason brought my backpack and boxes of shoes with me, and didn't notice until halfway across the street that just took forever to get across I decided to keep going. I figured taking a zero by going home and being really late, would be worse than going to tutorial and getting virtually only attendance points.

So, I went to JHE 319, and walked in to the only empty seat in the middle of the rows in the classroom smelling like footbag and not sleeping for, more than a day straight. The kids in the class were all working on some assignment that I obviously missed the instructions for, and since I was 20 minutes late I didn't feel right in disrupting the class and asking the T.A's what I should do. Turns out, I should have brought a SPECIAL sketching pad, pencils, a fancy eraser, and some printed out homework sheets to this tutorial, and all that I did bring was sweaty clothes, a passport and 3 boxes of shoes with droopy eyes and no motivation to breathe. Eventually, after I just put my hands around my eyes and tried to wake up to reality the T.A came by, and just handed me some pencils and a piece of sketching paper and pointed me to the board. As an exercise, we had to copy and re-scale really weird figures to get our minds working right. Without the instruction of the T.A's, and without having all the special printed sheets I took the 45 minutes and did it all, beating multiple other students, and when I handed it into the box it looked exactly like the kid ahead of me. So, here's hoping that I actually got perfect on such an adventure, to end a perfect weekend.

The next 8 hours of class were a bit more exhausting and jaw closing. I had a good sleep that night.

Haha, I'm glad your drawing lab thingy went well. I'm imagining you with blood shot eyes staring at the paper and then the board and thinking: I'M GOING TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. That's hardcore. I ended up getting home at 4am with a headache and sleeping right through my 10am optimization class. Luckily, all I missed was review.

Well, these last sessions of mine have felt great. Since I'm back in the, new and improved Quantum 3's, which, as of yet do NOT HAVE any manufacturing defects to speak of. Hooray! Anyway, I've been drilling 3 concepts a day doing the most fundamental drills I can think of. If I want to get good one day, I must listen to the facts that every good player, outside of Evan Gatesman apparently, drills the hell out of the basics. This isn't to say before that I didn't drill "the basics", I just think that I moved on too quickly after I satisfied myself too soon. So, I'm now drilling the things I was drilling 6 months ago, with a vengence. That's right eggbeaters, I wont let you suck anymore.

After drilling pdx whirl a bunch today, I remembered that at vegas jam, when doing synchro stuff had to say "My tomahawks aren't consistent enough to rely on for this". That pissed me off, greatly. So, I did a few of them. Highlight of the day = Spinning whirl->Tomahawk bs, and tomahawk->spinning whirl bs. I forgot to do ss egg*rpt today. Damnit.

Also, as my third concept outside of whirls and egg's for the day, I did grifters. I ended on 4 flipside grifters in a row, and it took forever. The grinding feeling of just trying that so many times in a row felt great. In the "basics" category I've got most of the bases covered, and I experience great feelings learning a new one. After this, I footed spinning grifter, with one try flipside. I clicked the elevator button and descended 8 floors into my bedroom. I think my "strongside" grifter would take roughly half as many tries to get 4 times in a row (this is all from clipper, because toe grifter is much easier) so I plan on getting my flipside more consistent before I move on with strongside. My only tip for getting a good dex on grifter is to think about dexing it with your thigh, instead of calf. I doubt that would make sense to people unless I grabbed the bag and demonstrated in slow-motion. By the way, if there is a name for Grifter butterfly, so, the "dadacurve" of grifters instead of drifter, I'd like to know.

Whatever, I just don't want to the grifters or have grifters which are questionable like Vasek's.

Maybe I'm twisted, and everyone will respond "IN Final shred Vasek's grifters were perfect! What are you thinking?" Well, my response to that is perhaps, but I want the deepest ones ever, none of this "I crank my ankle and go over the bag so it looks clean, and play 8 hours everyday" nonsense. Sigh, Vasek is so incredible. Does everyone recognize HOW good he is? Some comments make it seem that way, but then I recommend that you double how good you think he is, and that is really how good he is.

Maybe.

/////////

Another note, about where I play.

Recently, I switched from the underground garage to right inbetween the elavators and one of the small gyms my building has. There is more than enough room to play, light, heating etc. However, I have noticed some shocking results from playing there.

->In the 4 months I played in the underground garage, one person ever acknowledged sincerely what I was doing. One guy took a camera, from his car, stopped and video'd for a minute and took off. There were a couple more who said "neat" or something to that affect, but that was it.

->In the few weeks I've played in this well lit, public place I get more than 2 comments everyday. It seems also, for some reason, that the asians on the floor comment more than anyone else.

->Girls seem to work alot harder for their bodies than guys do apparently. There is a complete variety of girls who go past me from the elavators to the gym, and multiple per night. There may or may not be 1 guy the entire session in those gyms.

->Females also, seem to have a different concept or working out. It seems that (nearly) every girl is well dressed, has all makeup/hair/whatever else done, just to go sweat.

->Guys on the otherhand, suck at working out. I have yet to see a guy exit that gym with a drop of sweat. This is where alot of comments come from, because as I play for 2 hours I typically run well over when someone goes in and out of the gym. Guys usually say "Man, that must be a hell of a workout eh?" and related comments.

->Also, comments by guys typically have to do with "what tournament are you preparing for?" or "That is a workout" or "That is insane", acknowledging how hard footbag is. This is in contrast, to female comments which always consist of more personal questions like "How long have you been doing that?" or "What exactly are you doing / What is that you are doing?", more conversational.

So in conclusion, what I initially started this second edit to say was that a sweaty shirtless kid in a garage is less approachable to the public than a shirtled glistening kid in a well lit area. If people ever try to recruit people, or make money busking I suggest taking these two things into account. I imagine both of those concepts are trivial and well known, but I just didn't know to what extent.

It is neat actually interacting with humans :)

Thanks for the comments guys, they genuinely made me smile.

Today was a good 3 hour session I think. I started off by drilling all the things I drilled this week, being Eggs, Dlos, and an assortment of other things. For some reason in my white Quantums, and REALLY responsive legs I felt like I was Vasek. Like, you know when he just RIPS those dexes, and POWERS through stuff? I had that feeling for the entire session. I couldn't say why, but I can say that my best session time is always after 9:00 PM, any time before that and it just doesn't feel right. I guess humans are creatures of habit, and when I have school all day, and then play inbetween 8/11:00 pm, my body would get used to that time.

Anyway, egg->ss egg*rpt was nice to PUSH through. I don't want to give off the impression that I was good at them, just better than before. I got 16 contacts of that, and dlo->ss dlo*rpt. Of course, this took many, many attempts. I then switched to blenders, and got infinity->blender*rpt many times. I changed my posture on my flip, so that when I blender-ed it felt more sticky, and less "Is it there?->ey". I then drilled double switches, and got 16 (number of the day?) contacts of magellan->double switch*rpt. Since I have never done this drill, I had to figure it out, which was a pleasure. Sinking the dblswitch more, was the key.

So, a double switch I typically do the dexes going upwards because I learned delusional first. I usually just half delusional toe bail, and there is my dblswitch. So, when my foot is raised a foot and a half, it is hard to pixie. So, slowing things down, and thinking Byrin-stalls helped alot. Spinning to anything works easier when you stall the clipper more than you'd want to, so I suggest you try it. Just imagine pdx whirl->tea time->spinning clipper*rpt. You know you want it.
I then had a bit of string time, where I did some grifters, which, since I had Vasek legs today were stickier than normal. It just seemed I could pull and push my feet around the bag with less twitch and more control. I did a couple blubbermans, since at Johnny's yesterday I was feeling off. I hit my best blubberman to date, which had all sets completely uptime. Every quantum had a good 6->12 inch rise after I completed the dex, and it was really easy. Normally at least 2 of the quantums are kind of peaked/already downtime by the time I'm done the dex, which makes for a harder set on the trick thereafter. This blubberman reminded me of some Euro 06 Vasek video, the one where he does the best symp string ever, on those planetfootbag-1000 dollar-shred mats. Symp whirrs and blurry Whirrs, God. Not "god," as a sigh, but, God. The man himself, did those blurry whirrs.

Anyway, I learned a new trick at Johnny's yesterday, which is flurry. This brings me to a hypothesis about what my particular body does with footbag.

learn trick, have bad form, leave it for a few months, learn other tricks, try the "learned trick again", it is easier, hit it alot, leave it, *rpt....And then 1.5 years later actually have "mastered it". I mean, I was watching some videos from the first page of my blog, which, are 1.5 years old. I was just learning those tricks then, and I am now mid-stringing them. The outcomes of this progress, I suspect will follow the same pattern, but will get easier with time. I figure as long as my body stays in good shape, and I learn to "learn" faster and easier, I could cut this process down dramatically.

So yeah, the rewind that I did both sides today, that I hope to have mastered by 1.5 years is pixie paradon->flurry.

I also read most of Jorden's blog, up until worlds '07 this weekend. I noticed he bolded stuff that he was happy about, so I threw that into this post.

Did I mention I'm picking ANSSI up tomorrow? I am really nervous that he wont have enough to do here, since I'm in school and everyone else is working. Shit, I completely forgot to get started on his apple+strawberry crumble! GRUNT, get this lead off my hands, I have to bake at 11:38 PM!
