New Moves
I should probably just let this whole thing drop, but this post in particular really highlighted how miserably I failed to get my point across, about why I thought it was such a bad name, and why it really bothered me.BainbridgeShred wrote:I really think some of you are making much to big a deal out of the Cripwalk name, it's a dance done more by private school kids everywhere in Seattle than a dance that will get you shot in very FEW places.
And why make it a race issue anyways Ken?
.
OK. I`m gonna try one more time.
Say somebody hit a new trick and decided to name it: `Lou Gehrigs Disease.` That would be in poor taste, right? I mean, it`s an awful disease which kills people. Very FEW people die from it, but it`s still a horrible disease right? You can see why that would be a bad name to name a trick. Oh yeah, and on the off chance that anybody who has a family member who died from Lou Gehrig`s Disease, or who works in a hospital with people who suffer from LGD... if any of those people happened upon footbag in the future, do you think they would be amused by a trick being named LGD? Maybe it wouldn`t be enough to turn them off from the sport, but still.
There`s my example. Keep it in mind while reading this:
`Cripwalk` is a dance done by members of a gang called the Crips. Maybe prep school kids from nice families who live in nice suburban neighborhoods who don`t carry guns and don`t have friends who have been shot, maybe those prep school kids also do this dance. But originally, it was a dance done by members of the Crips (who happen to be mostly black and latino.... not to make it a race issue or anything, just stating a random fact). The Crips and the Bloods are 2 of the biggest gangs in North America, and every year gang violence is responsible for killing thousands of young black and latino youths in America. Is the Cripwalk responsible for this? Usually, not directly, no. The cripwalk, as well as gang signs, and gang colors are symptoms more than causes of gang violence. But gangs (not just gang violence, but gangs themselves) are responsible for fucking up and killing the lives of lots of teenagers every year, in America and elsewhere.
Now, considering how the footbag community is mostly white middle class, it`s pretty likely you don`t know anybody who has been the victim of gang violence. It`s also pretty likely most footbaggers don`t understand the extent to which gangs can destroy people`s lives. But if you did, you`d see that it`s not a laughing matter, and its more than just a dance prepschool kids do. Back in the 1980s, people thought HIV and AIDS were only problems in the Gay community. People sometimes called it `Gay cancer.` I wouldn`t be surprised if prep school kids in Seattle during the 1980s joked `I heard Ken got gay cancer over the weekend!` and it was funny because it was a problem they didn`t have to deal with. But just because a problem doesn`t immediately affect you, and you joke about it, doesn`t mean that it isn`t a horrible problem which should be addressed respectfully.
Moshing butterfly sounds like a really cool trick. Something positive, something good and fun. Naming it after something related to gangviolence, which is a really sad and serious problem... doesn`t seem cool. I dunno, as somebody who is half-asian, I think I would have been turned off from footbag if, when I started playing, I learned there was a trick called Nipwalk, or Chinkwalk. If footbag ever does get popular enough to generate interest in urban black youths, I think names like `cripwalk` will only turn them off.
My 2 cents, for whatever its worth.

The only move I named is "croissant", typical french breakfast pastry. If I duck it, I'll call it "croissant au beurre" (same pastry only cooked in butter)... pretty sure this whole breakfast foods won't catch on in the footbag community but still, I think it's a refreshing change. As for the crips and the bloods I thought that was part of the 80s and that these gangs were truly a thing of the past.
Cheers for enlightening me on that front Ken.

actually, there is a truce btwn crips and bloods. they still dont like eachother, but the violence has disapated greatly. In any case, i dont see Cripwalk being a bad name for a footbag move. I read ken's whole post, and understood it, but naming tricks is not about being socially conscious. Sorry. Go tell ryan to change the names of Superfly, Dolomite, Blackula, and Shaft. Tell Chad to re-name gangsta Party. Oh yeah, how about re-naming barfly- that encourages our young footbag players to go drinking and become alcoholics. And we sure dont need that! Your Mom . . . is that constructive? Tombstone . . . please, lets not encourage death, and gravedigger?. I think you get my point. There are already lots of offensive names. If we are to start prohibiting certain names from being used for future footbag moves, we must first change those unacceptible names of footbag's past. thats what i think. I do the cripwalk (in the safety of my own home tho . . .)
My name: Jeremy Mirken, AKA Chocolatey Shatner, AKA jerk enemy rim.

How is Dolomite offensive? I thought it was like a rock or mineral or something.

Gangs are most certainly not a thing of the past. There is very real gang activity going on in every major city in the USA. It's just doesn't get the new coverage anymore because they already milked it for all the fear and sensationlism they could get from it.
You know, maybe somebody should tell Chad to re-name Gangsta Party, seeing how Brian MacKenzie hit it at least 2 full years before Chad did.Senor Grommet wrote: Go tell ryan to change the names of Superfly, Dolomite, Blackula, and Shaft. But yeah, Shaft, Dolomite, Superfly, Barfly, Tombstone, Gravedigger... none of those move names are offensive. Let`s not get ridiculous.
Up until now, the only generally accepted and used movename which I think is really offensive is `flaming tard.` That`s pretty awful.
But honestly, the examples Mirken listed aren`t very persuasive to me, nor are Chainsaw Massacre and GYBAS. Even the people giving those examples must be able to see the difference between `flaming tard` and `barfly.` Come on guys.

And you must be able to see the difference between Chinkwalk and Cripwalk. They're on far different ends of the spectrum. The level of political correctness this shows is amazing, I simply could not imagine any black person being offended by the name, it just wouldn't add up.But honestly, the examples Mirken listed aren`t very persuasive to me, nor are Chainsaw Massacre and GYBAS.
