I just finished a book called "Amusing Ourselves to Death" by Neil Postman. It was written back in 1985, but it is even more relevant today.

The general premise is that Television has made this culture less intelligent and less capable of being actually informed on relevant issues that effect everyone. The very nature of television and it's need for brevity and entertainment thwarts attempts at serious public discourse.

This book picks up where Marshall McLuhan left off and continues the conversation of how the medium's in which we choose to communicate says as much or more about us as a whole than does the content of messages being transmitted.

He touches on the many aspects of TV's influence - from marketing psychology to how it effects the dissemination of knowledge and what is considered to be important and what is not. He says many things that are already somewhat apparent to us, but he brings it all into focus in one short and wittily written work....

Allan, you are so cool that I am going to use decent grammar and possibly punctuate. Check it out boys and girls and girls and boys:

Televsion can be useful in ways that books can't. A guitar soloing video can teach technique in ways that a book of a similar subject can not. However, the book could impart more theory in less space.

Anyway, its capitalism and profit driving that is evil. Not television. TV is the tool of choice by those evils at the moment. I believe this is an important distinction. I would be a shame if people revolted against TV blind to the greedy forces behind it. As I wrote that sentence I wondered, "What is responsible for capitalism?"

haha, this reminds me how Postman refuses to do a TV interview because of his position on TV and serious discourse. I read 'Amusing Ourselves to Death' too and its really good for the reasons that Allan mentioned.

Sam, read 'Europe and the People Without History.' Eric Wolf(!) shows how the growth of global merchant trade instilled primitive capitalist practices in Feudal states and eventually with the 'crises of feudalism', capitalism with its high production capabilities took over as the dominant mode of production. Wolf explains it way better than me. There should be a thread devoted to capitalism, but back to TV...

There are some positive aspects about tv. Most of the channels i watch are actually educational. i love watching the history channel, the discovery channel, national geographic and channels like that. Sometimes i watch other shows but not very often at all that it saps from my life. Most of the time it is after i get home from work and im just having a nighttime snack before i go to sleep.

Main reason TV (And to a much larger extent, movies) are what's ruining our youth is because the viewers, and the executives, don't view what they're doing as art, even though it is.
