In terms of string length, how are you on monitoring your breathing? The reason people recommend BOPs to increase string length isn`t just because they are easy- its because it`s easy to catch your breath during them. If you learn to breathe during other tricks, like ducking butterfly, symp mirage or pixie butterfly, and throw in those `breathing tricks` after every few tricks, you will find your string length improves.

One more thing: rubberman is rubberman regardless of which trick you start from. So rubberman starting on atom, leg, or blur.... all of those are rubberman.

Stay safe, good luck with the shred.

I've got problems with string length too... Actually, right now, I've got problems with playing. For string length, if you have to go to kicks to figure out what more you want to do, then do that. Dropping on the same trick... I know that pain...only too well...

How are you holding up man? I hope you're having a good thanksgiving. And we'll see you back here soon, right?

My string length is about an average of ten - twelve moves usually consisting of an equal amount of threes and fours. The best runs during the day are upwards of fiteen - twenty and then ofcoure I have the shitty runs that are well... yeah. I wouldn't say breathing is that big of a problem with me, my max BOPs are 43 I think last time I tried and I didn't drop due to breathing difficulties, so even throwing in the bigger moves aren't going to kill me either. My biggest problem is dropping on something I have hit many times before, maybe it's complacentcy? Whatever it is, I get frustrated as hell when it occurs, especially when the run includes fives and some nice combinations of much harder moves.

Thanksgiving was alright. They held a holiday feast at the chow hall but the line ended up being 45 minutes long so I sat through it while some high ranking army officers came through and shook peoples hands. The best thing was the apple pie with ice cream, it was the only thing that made it feel like the holiday. I called home and talked to my family, and ended up playing footbag for a couple hours. Then I stayed up late playing chess and bullshitting with random people.

I didn't hit anyhing new while playing footbag, but I did manage to hit almost anything I tried first attempt which was nice. Almost had Dlo > Terraging op butterfly but the second dex was a couple inches too low to scrape the butterfly out of. I also kept throwing in consecutive whirls, which were very tight, low, and controlled so it looked intense. My flipside symposium whirl sucks I found out, I can't seem to open the hole for the dex midrun. Lastly, Pixie Merlin fell off my toe :( . That would have been a nice six add to have hit.

I was kind of thinking to myself the last week if I should update this blog at all, why? I don't want to set expectations for myself then not meet them when I get back. Then I realized that even if I don't put footbag in it, I could still write in it because people are curious what goes on here, I guess I'll keep writing then.
I am back in Najaf, away from Fellujah, and in the only "Green Zone" in Iraq. I'm safe, alot safer then I was up north, and we were given yet again a new task to fulfill down here. I'll be standing guard, imagine that, for the next two months until I get home. I am not in my new camp yet however, I don't even know if they'll have the services this one provides, but I can sure hope.
I guess I will put a little footbag stuff in here still though. I just really hope that me hitting some of these moves makes it so anyone reading them expects more out of me then what I can give. I really don't think I'm that great of a player but I am getting better. I just wish I had someone to play with, but I guess I will come February.
Anyway, yesterday I found a nice twenty foot x twenty foot cement slab by my quarters. I decided it was a premium spot to play in, so I grabbed a couple energy drinks that they are giving out in the chow hall now, water, and four footbags. Two abshires and two old ones from Eugene that my mom sent me in the mail this past week. It was warm, about 70 degrees and roughly noon. Shortly after beginning I had some Iraqi workers who clean the area for the camp sit down near me and watch me play. They looked amazed and gave me alot of "Very good friend" comments of what they could pronounce in English. I didn't know they would be the for the next hour watching...
I did a few record attempts like I always do ofcourse, like Flipside Spinning Clipper X10 (That kinda meens it's not my flipside anymore but equal to my strong). Also hit Ducking Butterfly X6, which was crazy because it seems to come and go. After that I thought I might as well hit Nasty Nate's old combo, or try for it, so I hit Ducking Butterfly > Diving Butterfly > Repeat... I then hit Whirl X6 BS, one right after the other, funny how they both died on six. Paradox DLO BSOS was another thing I couldn't comprehend how I hit, since I blow at DLO's. Since I was hitting those I decided might as well try Fog, so I tried it both sides and it rolled off both sides multiple times, maybe another day. I gave whirling swirl a go both sides and it's just not happening, I can hit whirling reverse swirl, but this move is too much. The simple swirl at the end just doesn't seem to come back to catch the bag, any help? Simposium whirls are comming and going, yesterday they came, I hit alot of them including Reverse Swirl > Symposium Whirl both sides...
I look up at that and don't see my session yesterday though. During that time frame it didn't feel like I did all that, maybe to the Iraqi's it was even cooler, but to me it was just the same old stuff. I'll try to really keep what I am hitting here to retain when I get back home but I don't want to dissipoint. Only time will tell though, I have two months until I get home. During that amount of time I will work on sealing everything smoothly, instead of just hitting big moves...

Aaron, that is awesome! See, when you say you wish you had people to play with, it makes me realize that i dont. I have played with people for a total of 2.5 hours in my footbag career, which is about 5 months. I still progress, and music makes me forget, but you dont have music do you? I feel your pain, and i dont think you will dissapoint anyone when you come back, they will just be happy to see you and your great footbag skills.

Thanks for the words Henry. I couldn't believe how sore I was the other day after that session still. Trying to keep my spectator's happy I think I over did it a little and played a little too long and too hard. That night, even after alot of stretching before and after, I cramped up like crazy. I could barely sleep! Maybe tomarrow when I play will be better, I'm going for Torque > Pdx Whirl > Repeat...

Last session:

Date: December 7th 2004

Place: Unused tent with wooden floors

Music: (I bought speakers!) Tom Petty and the heart breakers

Weather: Cloudy but warm

Time: Noon - 2 P.M.

My last session was fun. I've been really trying to take everything I've been frustrated with the last couple weeks into account. My flipside especially, so I devoted this last session to 90% flipside moves and combos. Mostly those combinations that have become standard for me on my strong, and trying to catch them up on my weak. I also strained toes for most of the session because I am clipper guy and I needed to work on my toe game.

New Moves:

Terraging Op Osis
Flipside Ripped Warrior
Flipside Infinity Swirl
Sailing Butterfly/Tap/Mirage

New Runs:

Rubberman (Starting on Clipper this time)

... > Ripwalk > Ripwalk > Blur > Legbeater > Ripwalk > Blur > Legbeater > Ripwalk > ...

Diving Clipper > Spinning Clipper > Ducking Clipper > Repeat > Ducking Clipper > Spinning Clipper > Gyro Clipper > Spinning Clipper > Gyro Clipper > Drop

Overall, a real good session with alot of variety. I had alot of energy for some reason also, even though I had already gone to the gym that morning. I think it's because we're finally in one place, not moving around, and set for once. I am not being posted on guard either, I'm in charge of it now, woot. So I have plenty of time for footbag when I need to and hopefully be able to be comfortable with my game by the time I get home. Until next time...

Well it's been a long time since I have posted but I have a few things that I need to write about. It's not that I have lost my interest in my Blog or footbag in general, just that I've been busy and alot has been on my mind. It's been some time now since I wrote something out for myself. I was keeping a journal here in Iraq, but that lost interest. So I just need to write.

Lots of news really. For one, I am leaving Iraq at the end of this month to go to Kuwait. It's almost wierd because this place has become a second home. And you may think I have gone insane from all of this shit but I'm going to miss some of the things here. Like being able to go to the gym, eat well, and not be bothered with one task or another every minute. Which I have been fortunate to have this last month. Also, I knew that time together with my Marines would make us close, but we're really family now, which is priceless. My senior Marines aren't that anymore. They are still in charge of me, but we know so much about eachother and have been through so much shit the rank structure from E3-E5 is almost neglected. I still have much respect for them, but in a different way now, and I believe the same is true vise versa.

We are leaving Iraq anywhere from the 28th to the 2nd of February to travel to Kuwait, and ultimately, the states from there. The last flight should be from the 6th - 8th of February. My mother and sister are comming down from Oregon to see me come in, which was a huge surprise when they told me. I can't think of anything better than having that occur and thank them whole-heartedly for their decision. My leave thereafter begins the 18th of February until the 10th of March. Not entirely a month off, but that was my choice. I could have taken more days but I decided to save them for my next leave home. (We are limited to 30 a year)

Additional news in regard to myself is that I am back together with my Ex-Girlfriend Charlotte. I am very happy with this decision and can't wait until I see her. It was nothing I planned, we spoke for a few hours over the phone and descovered it wouldn't be right to not have eachother while I am back. It's the small things that I would, and do, miss and wouldn't know how to get along without her attached to me once again back home. Life is good.

Furthermore, I have already made so many plans when I get back that I probably should start writing them down so I don't forget. After my family visits me for a few days I'm going to go down to Pacific Beach and meet up with Richy. He says he's going to get me a pair of new CT520's and two bags before hand so they will be ready for me to purchase from him when I get back. Then we are going to have a huge make up session and sit back and enjoy the peace that the states will give me. The next weekend after that will be the beginning of my leave and it couldn't be better. First off, my girlfriend is going to be waiting for me when I get off of the airplane and I'm going to kick it with her and my old friends for the first couple of days because I need to keep my presence on the down low. Why? Because I told my mom that I wouldn't be comming home until the beginning of March. I'm not some sick asshole son though, her birthday is the 21st of February, and I'm going to surprise her that morning with presents, breakfast in bed, and my whole collection of photographs from Iraq. I think she will be pleasently surprised, especially when I treat her to a day full of activities including dinner.

Leave doesn't just start out sweet though, it's just beginning there. My dad is comming down from Alaska to see me from the 21st to the 25th of February, and I will be spending a few days with him to catch up. He's supported me more than anyone while I have been here and I owe him so much. I already promised him that when I get out oif the Corps I'll be spending my summers away from College with him to build a house.

From all of that something even better happens. I AM GOING TO CSS6!!! I already got my plane ticket with Nate and James and it's going to be Eugene represent at Colorado and it's going to be epic. I've never been to a competition nor an event nearly as large as this in my entire footbag career. It will definately bring the footbag craving that I have been so depleted of the last 6 months back in an instant. I am already shaking from excitement now, I can't wait.

Leave is going to be great, I'll definately spend as much time with family and friends as possible and enjoy every minute of it. I'm glad everything is turning out for the best, I just HOPE AND PRAY that I don't get extended still. It can always still happen but lets just say it's not going to. I can't have all this messed up, that would just be wrong. I think you would agree. So my conclusion is this. I haven't been writing because I have been planning all this. And even though I haven't posted anything about hitting new moves or combos it's not that I haven't been trying. I've just been busy. I can't wait to see everybody and have the best damn time of my life the 26th and 27th of February. God Bless.

I'm going to edit this and keep writing but I just got kicked off the computer, I'll write more tomarrow...

Well since I've decided to go to CSS6 I've been trying to practice more and get back into footbag. Mostly working on the basics, Bops, simple 3's, and standard combos. I've been eating well and working out so I have more energy and I can tell it's helping. I didn't manage much the last couple sessions, but here are some highlights:

New Moves:
Flipside Pixie Dyno

New Runs:
Stepping ss Clip > Blender BSOS
Dimwalk > Blur X 3
Reverse Swirl > Blur
Symp Pixie X4 > Merlin

Not much like I said but atleast I am motivated once again because in two weeks I'll be out of here. I'm definately going to try to get into footbag even more than before this deployment. I'm spending about a grand on recording items, including a camcorder, video editing software, and more RAM for my notebook that I'm getting. I really want to produce some videos for everyone to see, and capture some insane shit at CSS6. We'll just have to see for now though. I'm out.

THREE MORE DAYS AND I LEAVE THIS PIECE OF SHIT COUNTRY.

Yay for me. Besides that, my dad just bought me a Sager 9860 Notebook that costed him $3,300 as a present for me when I get home. That's right, a 3k+ laptop that is going to be pure ownage.

As far as footbag goes I've not improved any, I'm still trying to catch up to where I was in anticipation for going home. It's just the nerves are on edge and I really can't wait.

I'm Back!!!

I'M BACK FROM IRAQ!!!

Yay, so many new things to post. I'll just do it chronologically since it makes the most sense:

First off, we left early as shit on the sixth of January from Kuwait and we stopped in Ireland and in New Foundland. They said we were stopping for gas but what really went on was ALCOHOL pitstops. Our senior marines told us two "drinks" each but that shit wasn't enforced in the least. Everyone got really shitty in Ireland and the people there were great. Irish accents are the shit and I picked up a little leprechaun doll and a postacard along with some Irish chocolate. I drank two very large Irish beers and enjoyed them thoroughly. The same pretty much went down in New Foundland thereafter and then it was on to Cali.

We got back finally about four in the afternoon, turned our weapons in, and were greeted with many many people's families and free beer. I grabbed like ten of them first thing and went straight to my room to chill. Everyone was getting drunk as shit so I joined in and passed out at only seven in the evening!!! I woke up at about two in the morning and went out to enjoy the world that is the US. (I still feel like I am suppose to have my weapon by my side!)

Anyway, my first thought was FOOTBAG so I headed to San Diego and Abshire was very hospitable and we had a great session. It was only us two but it was the best session and experience I have had in 9 months. I surprisingly hit some decent moves and nice combos but my string length was really shitty due to the CT520's Richard hooked me up with. I managed to seal:

Blurry Whirl > Reverse Swirl BS
Paradox Torque BS
Pixie Op Blender BS

I loved it completely and Richard was busting some phat combos and runs ofcourse too. I only have one regret.... that I didn't stretch more. My legs are completely shot to hell today and I am suffering from just walking. I think I'll drink a few beers tonight and massage the shit out of them.

Well that's it for me from now. I can't wait until my family comes to see me in a few days and then head home to shred with Nate and James then Colorado!!! Woot, peace out from CALIFORNIA!!!

:D

I am so happy. Thanks for the comments by the way guys, it's great to know people read this thing. As of right now I am sitting in a PC Cafe on Pacific Beach and just finished my breakfast. I hit the gym up this morning and I'm staying at Richie's house currently until I go pick up my mom from the airport tomarrow. We didn't throw down yesterday due to me being busy with some errands but it should be epic today since Jason is jumping in. I think I'll stretch like four times before I play and like all night after so I don't wake up screaming in pain like I did from the previous session.

I just hit the gym up and worked back and shoulders. I suppose I give off the military look because I had a walk in discount at this random gym and this hippy dude working out came up to shake my hand and thank me. It feels real good to be back and it's just going to get better.

Yesterday I was walking around Oceanside taking care of some errands and at the time, waiting for the city bus. This black guy walked up in front of the bus with a duffel bag and dropped it and walked off. I TOTALLY FREAKED. Hah, it's funny now but at the time I kept telling myself to not get on that damn bus and back the hell away. Anyway, about two minutes later he came back to grab it. I guess he was getting something from his car across the way... I have yet to adapt back within these last few days.

Well I'll post again what we all hit today on the beach. THe weather isn't looking that great but it's sunny as hell to me. That's all that matters I suppose. Once again, later from Cali!!

Jason Crook is whoa, and ofcourse, so is Richie. I played the other day with them both. Two sessions in the day. Thanks to Rich I got some Endurox to pump me through both and the one with Jason was awesome. I really didn't think I would do too well but here are a few things I hit:

Moves:

Pixie Ducking Whirl (First Try)
Blazing Op Butterfly (Each time I tried O_o)
Sailing Butterfly and Pixie Tap
Food

Combos:

Stepping SS Clip > Stepping SS Whirl > Reverse Swirl > Spinning Clip
Pixie Whirl > Reverse Swirl > Paradox Whirl
5/6 of Rubberman :?
Blurry Whirl BSOS
Symposium Whirl BSOS

It was just pure fun. Like I said Jason is crazy. He is fearless, really.. hehe. He makes some drills look like cake... Stepping ss blender > P. Torque > Rpt anyone? Yeah, he's great. I'm going to hang out with my family down from Oregon now. Footbag is good. Footbag is life. Life is good.

Last night I played solo and remembered thinking... god damn, I have spent nine months away and now I'm playing all by myself again, NOOOO!!! But it wasn't all that bad. I really wanted to work on some control and just might do it again tonight. I need to get ready for CSS6 and I think the only way to prep for such an event is to just... well play. Play like crazy, but not enough to hurt myself.
I threw on a Linkin Park CD in my fucking 3300 mad ass computer, and just shredded in my little room. I moved the chairs out of the way and decided to not stretch before hand because I wanted to change it up a bit and keep them tight. However, I always stretch afterwards, which I did.
Drills and combinations included Spinning Clipper > Infinity > Repeat a bunch of times, Ducking Clip > SS Butterfly, Ripwalk > Ripwalk > Infinity, Blur > Dimwalk, and I tried to pick up some new small combos like DLO > Drifter, Reverse Swirl > Blizzard, and Diving ss Mirage > Ducking ss Clip. Really nothing fancy but good drills to just have in my back pocket and keep runs smooth and long.
What I have noticed since I have gotten back is a new sensation of well... excitement. The bag just feels better under my feet, regardless of what I am hitting. Something you can't buy or train for, it's very rejuvinating to know that I can up my game right now without throwing in more difficult combos or moves. Instead of executing a new run, I'm going to just do the old runs better, stronger, and cleaner. That's my goal for now and I'm content with it. Which is very nice because I know where I am at for once in my game and I'm going to try to keep it that way for as long as possible.
Once again, it is so nice to be back and you all should take a moment to just look around and appreciate the small things you have. I don't really care that I'm currently living in a barracks being redone and that the services I had before are now gone in the building. As long as I have the essentials I'll be great. Oh yeah, and my footbag too. Then things are even better. I think I'll try to get ahold of Damon Mathews, we should definately get together soon. He lives so close, yet we have never played... that 'll be something to look forward to...

Well I haven't posted in my blog for some time so I thought tonight would be good to do some catching up. I have quite a bit to post about, and since I no longer am home in Oregon to enjoy my vacation, I will start posting more in addition to this post tonight.

I had alot of fun at home, did what I wanted, took advantage of what time I was given with my family, ect. I brought my girlfriend down from Oregon to California here until today when I sent her home. It was fun except for what occurred the first night driving down which I will not post because it's just too horrendous and pisses me off just thinking about it.

Anyway, I've definately started changing my style since I have been back, I am bailing to alot more same side butterflies instead of osis, and throwing in more complex combinations. CSS6 really inspired me to get back into footbag, and being able to kick with everyone there, Nate, James, Juan Rangel, Richard Abshire, and Jason Crook is just too much to not overlook. They have all inspired me in some way to improve my preformance on the game and I think I just might start getting into it like I was before I joined the Marine Corps. Back then, I was improving weekly. I pray to be able to get that much commitment and motivation again.

In Eugene I think I had four or five sessions with Nate and James, not counting CSS6. Some were good, some were okay, all were fun. Nate is busting so hard now it's uncanny. I think if I still lived in Eugene and had been practicing with him instead of joining and going to Iraq, I could be up there but that's just wishful thinking. James is definately throwing in different threes now, and has a large handful of fives to choose from. It's great to see improvement with both him and ofcourse, especially, Nate.

Well, in the last month as far as my footbag game goes, I have hit alot of new moves, tons of long runs, and definately new variety, the following are what I can remember off the top of my head:

Pixie Ducking Whirl
Blazing op Mirage/Butterfly/Osis
Double Blender
Blazing ss blender
Ripstein
Mullet
(Surging set is back) Bigwalk/Gyro Blur/Crispy Mobius
Zig-Zag
Whirling SS Reverse Whirl
Symposium Whirling Reverse Swirl
Atomic Whirl
Hurl
Paradox Tapping Blender
Gyro Blender
Symposium Whirling Dragon
Symple Blender
Whirlwind
Porque
Shooting Butterfly
Dominatrix
Sailing Butterfly
Pixie Spinning Osis
Tripwalk > Food Processor

And that's all I can think of at the moment. I threw in some moves I hit today for the first time (Blazing ss blender/Symple Blender/Symposium Whirling Dragon). I have noticed that both my sides have strong whirling sets and moves but they differ. My right side is alot quicker, so the whirr and double blender were possible, but my left side can do Blazing really well. I also have tried and done gyro whirling set and I think James can vouch for that. I don't think I'll try it again though, seeing as how it will mess your knee up really bad.

As far as sets go, Surging has seemed to come back a little bit, but not on my flip side. I have only sealed the most basic surging moves the last month but I'll try to step them up and perhaps get some larger more complex moves thrown in. Gyro reverse swirling (Moir's set), I can clean about 50% of the time but I'm having trouble with set height. I have come inches from op butterfly many times but can't seem to get that extra height... Blazing is great on my left side but needs a little work on my right, and finally sailing is getting easier every time I try it. I hit Dominatrix today for Jason and Rich, so that was fun.

Today was a great session to see Jason Crook bust hard. I wish there was more footage of him online because he is undoubtedly BAP level and beyond but people just don't know it. From what I saw of Lon, Penske, Red, and Daryl at CSS, he is busting huge. Today he hit some runs that are just godly, let me give you a quick glimpse:

Atomic DLO BSOS with Paradox Drifter > Paradox Torque BSOS in it
Food Processor > Blurry Torque
Long ass Tripless runs
Fog > Dimwalk Swirl Midrun

And he has hit Paradox Torque > Paradox Blender > Repeat in front of me before... so he is undoubtedly one of the best shredders I've ever seen and kicked with. Richard wasn't up and playing today which was unfortunately due to an ankle injury. Next week he'll be up for sure so we'll get a good session in then.
