I was born into a religious family too. My uncle (my dad's brother) was the pastor of our church. My family kinda strayed away from it though. My parents got a divorce, and everyone in the church kinda dissowned my father in a way. Even he parents. That kinda really pissed me off, and turned me away from the whole church thing. We were really close to alot of the people on the church, and it took my grandparents and relatives almost 10 years to forgive my father. I guess in the time i lost my faith...i don't mean to defy you in your blog dave, but i don't have much faith anymore.

im alos a Biology major in college, and really into the whole science thing and evolution. I think that maybe God or whatever it is may have a place in this earth, but its not nearly as big as alot of people think it is

im not Lutheran myself (baptist :)) but i certainly have gone through many struggles, times when i've questioned everything i believe and my true motivations behind my actions and beliefs. i wont give you any unnecessary advice, but i'll pray for yah. i have actually felt really convicted about being a total hypocrite lately, not living my faith or having the right attitude towards other people. but anyway, good luck man, keep an open heart and mind.

Footbag Philosophy : The Foundation

I've always been interested in the mental aspects of footbag almost as much as the physical. I always wonder what other people feel when they play, how they think. I know sometimes when I play my mind drifts, but I wonder if some people are insanley focused. I'm also interested in how people pratice. I know many good players just play. I did this for about a month, and it made me a little better, but then i went back and did like 100's of foundation tricks, and I instantly saw results. It's quite amazing how muscle memory works and such. I think the whole concept of footbag/gravity is really unique. Just makign it stop on your foot and then being able to control its next path is something.

Anyway, I thought I might make weekly or so updates about a topic relating to my philosophy on the game. Footbag for me hasn't been smooth sailing, quite the contrary. I had terrible style, bad form, inconsistancy, you name it. But i feel like i overcame most of those obstacles eventually through some clear thinking and advice from others.

So I think if i had to pick one topic to deal with advice wise, it would be the idea of foundation in footbag. I think footbag is like a house, or a cake. You start with a thin layer of kicks and basics, and gradually make that thicker before moving on. If you put too heavy layers on weak layers, your whole thing crumbles. This is why you can't hit matador everytime if your legbeater sucks. It just makes sence. But even though it does make perfect sence, I see people doing way too hard tricks for their skill.

I think my basic ideas in shred have revolved around making the most solid foundation I can. I used to do like 200 mirages each side, every day, all summer. Substitue mirage with legover, atw, clipper, etc and those were my sessions. I can remember barely breathing but pushing through 100 atom smashers when I needed to skool atomic.

The best way to school single concepts and to build a foundation is like this. Set a target number (I always used 50 or 100), and then just keep hitting the trick. Everytime you hit it counts, if you hit it, keep going. Thus, if your doing mirage 2, 1, drop, 4, 3, would put you at 10. Keep going till you hit 100. I think this is good because 1) your doing the trick and 2) your playing out of it.

Anyway, doing stuff like this builds a foundation. Footbag should be at its perfection a square, with your mastery of each layer equal. But in actuality, it is much more a pyramid, with tiltless at the bottom and 7's at the top. Thus it really isn't a bad thing to be inconcistant at montage, as long as all your things below are large enough to hold improvement in that area.

In conclusion, skool your basics if you want to be good. If your going for blurry whirl when you cant hit 20 whirls in a row, your hurting yourself. I think most of my bad sessions come because I'm trying too hard stuff. Why bother trying whirlwind x 3 if you cant hit ps whirl x 10? Anyway, this is just my take. Some people are really good at certain stuff and suck at other things. But I think a large view of footbag with everything interrelated is the way to establish a solid, consistant, reliable game.

Played for an hour before work. Highlights:

8 contacts of paradon>barrage repeat both sides
16 contacts of blurry whirl>stepping ss whirl repeat
16 contacts of ducking butt>spinning butt (repeat)
spinning ducking butterfly>blurry whirl (repeat)
flurry>pixie paradon>blurriest>flurry>pixie paradon

Not bad, and my style felt really relaxed. Off to work.

Yeah, theres a ton of churches in Korea, and lots of Koreans are hardcore christians. I think that of all the Asian countries, Korea is where Christianity has been the most widely accepted.

I'm glad footbag has expanded your mind David. It bugs me when people who are supposedly liberal in thought, are similarly close-minded about Christians. Close-mindedness on either side of the belief spectrum is counterproductive.

On the footbag tip: props on 5 unique triples.

Holy shit. I fucking love you.

For starters, the notions that you once had "terrible style, bad form" or were inconsistent is a HUGE inspiration, because you are one of my favorite footbag players (Funny I've never exchanged a word with you; videos can bridge quite a gap ;).)

I'm a strong believer in drilling, and I'm glad to hear that if I keep at those basics, or bottom layer moves (as boring or as monotonous as they may be/become), something great can come of it. Funny you mention muscle memory, because it is a concept my friend and I bring up often when drilling..though I don't hear it mentioned much by other players.

Thanks for posting what you did..I agree with every word and you've rejuvenated the faith of having a solid foundation in me. I hope to read more of your footbag philosophy.

I don't mean to bring your blog off topic, honey ;) but in regards to this muscle memory, Morawski....
I have personally witnessed, several different times, Rippin' Rick Reese show up out of the blue, not having played in 8 months to a year and a half, and still completely school everyone at the party. THAT is muscle memory. And yes, it's important.

Hey.

Haven't posted in a few. Just shitty sessions to report really. Going to play in about 15 minutes, see if I can improve. Played barefoot with mike last night, that was pretty fun.

Life is life. Truly the Clavens cycle. school>work>home. Shred intermingled.

Hoping CSS footage comes out so I can critique myself and start a new chapter in my game.

Wish my parents would let me go play footbag this weekend with josh. Won't happen.

Stay positive.

Don't let your madre get you down. There will be plenty of footbags to be kicked in the future with many people. And many more barefoot sessions with mike and others.

Suggestion: Why not try to break your toe kick record. What is it now.... 4?...?

So... your coming to FL this summer, right?!

muah!

Blog,

The past few days have been interesting. Not in a bad way, just a lot happened and I had a lot of problems and stuff. But I fixed them all, and I think that’s because I didn’t get really hyper I just kinda chilled and fixed them step by step. My biggest problem came this morning when I got pulled over for speeding. But I fixed that, and didn’t get a ticket. And now im fine.

So lately ive been trying to be pretty positive and all. I don’t know, im not some wacko hippy im just trying to not be negative. Its been working pretty well, and I feel pretty good. Trying to just calm down and such. This led to a pretty good session last night, and an overall ok feeling throughout my days.

Tonight I went and rented “what the bleep do we know.” Mainly because loren baum was a friend of mine and now he moved to India and he said that this movie really had a lot of what he was into in it. being the interested frined I thought maybe I should educate myself about his decisions, so I went and rented it. I watched it with my friend Allison who is pretty open about shit.

The first few minutes were interesting. Lots of just like weird analysis of stuff. But then it got really sketchy. I like to think im pretty open minded but some of this was either like really weird, really vague, or just really like unrelated. I walked away from the movie feeling a few different things. First off I feel like most of it was common sence. Like not all the wack science shit, but the basic concept that you control your destiny and decisions was something I already believed in. it seemed like if you were a pessimist who thought your life was predetermined then the movie would impact you. But it really didn’t impact me. It was just like the science behind why you have bad days and shit, and how you can change your life for the better by thinking positive. In case your wondering, my recent positivity hasn’t come from some movie that I just watched tonight.

So anyway the movie kinda didn’t do much for me. Some of the stuff was really out there, and some of it was just dumb. I didn’t feel rebirthed or anything. I just felt kinda like “ok, cool?”. Idk, you would think I would be all offended because they say there isn’t god and stuff but I really didn’t. well they did say there was god, but in the like, spirit sence. It was a lot of views mixed together, and it wasn’t really concise. I felt like the message really wasn’t there. Or maybe I’m just stupid. That’s always a possibility.

The really dumb thing was that at the end it shows you that all these people you listened to for 2 hours really know whats up in their field (or so they say). But the last person is some chick named ramtha, who is a “being” that is being like, tapped into by some lady. Like, weird paranormal stuff. So I don’t get that. If you want to be taken seriously why would you have some 35,000 year old being channeled into you? I mean even if its true, save it for the sequel after you haven’t freaked out a lot of people.

So anyway my life hasn’t changed, and im not moving to India, but I really want to know what loren saw in this flick that made him want to like, turn his life around. Really I think it is this coupled with some other stuff. I guess ill find out one day.

In other news there isn’t much to talk about. No girls, just work shred school. I guess its alright. I don’t really like talking about like, girl shit in my blog, so I wont. That’s what fanmail is for.

I hope to kick tomorrow. I hope you do too.

I saw that movie when it came out in theatres. i thought it was an excellent movie, because im really into quantom theory, and those types of movies.

One reason why it might have seemed vauge, is because almost the entire movie is based on theory. Some things they cannot totally explain, but they know are there, because they can be witnessed.

If you wanna watch a similar movie to that, you should rent Waking Life. Its a very different style, and i think it has alot more things in it that anyone can relate too, or even be remotley interested in. I've watched it a few times, and its got a cool message. If you liked what the bleep slightly, you'll definitley like Waking Life alot more.

peace man

First Day of Spring 2006

Today was a harsh realization about how much I suck at footbag. And part of me doesn't even care. I played with mike and I was just dropping all over the place. No highlights. Sketchy stalls.

I'd like to get all gung-ho about footbag and come out this rut, but I'm not really sure if another 200 hours of my life is worth getting back to where I was. In some aspects, I feel like I've peaked.

Perhaps the warmer weather will bring a warmer personality.
