Confused.

About once or twice a month I feel the need to question my entire life and why the fuck I'm pushing so hard at footbag. Definitely feeling some of that now.

I know in my heart I want to give my life to this sport, and would have no regrets doing so. But inside me I feel the public out there really doesn't give a shit what I have to offer. To me I'm making the most of my time and not wasting it by picking up mundane or self-destructive habits. To the ignorant I'm really wasting my time, and the everyday life shit is what's important.
It's tough knowing the most successful circus performers and solo variety acts out there are in their mid to late 20s. I would give anything to be a successful performer and promote footbag that way. That's what I'm striving toward. But I know I would need more material. Way more. I would need to learn how to be universally funny and flirty and bombastic and all that other bullshit that I'm not. It kind of hurts knowing I still need 5 more years experience before I'm any more than a blip on the radar. People still patronize me and try to undercut what I charge because I'm just a kid. Not always, but sometimes. It sucks.

I'm going to be 20 in September. That's seems so old. Even though I've come a long way in the past 6 years it still feels like I was coasting most of the time. I could have done so much more to be well-adapted and not so introverted and inexperienced at life.

Another thing...

Freestyle footbag is headed in the wrong direction. Modified definitely perpetuates that. The trouble is all the wisdom and experience has been sucked out and replaced with many inexperienced and/or opinionated teenage players. The majority of people on this forum have a badly skewed view of what's important and don't get the big picture. This is probably what I find the most depressing/discouraging of all. It really disheartens me to see

1. squabbles about

- how many adds a trick is worth
- correct trick nicknames
- what gets xdex/pdx
This stuff is a reflection of the old and broken notation we currently use. It's meaningless, believe me. Use footbag as a means of expression, not as a calculator. Create art, not numbers. Adds are mainly what is holding back progression of style and trick innovation. Despite being 'World Champ' at shred 30, I think we need to either change or get rid of it. Like everyone says -- fuck adds. Besides, this system will be obsolete soon enough (hint hint). :D
2. so many off topic posts and threads. Do us a favour and play some video games if you don't want to contribute to the forum. It will add minutes to all of our lives. If you're on modified just to 'hang out', crack jokes and chat about non-footbag stories, movies or other trendy junk, please go elsewhere. That's not what the forum is here for. Kill time on your own time and don't waste our lives reading your word barf.
3. harsh criticisms of style instead of advice/positive encouragement. This drives me nuts. We're a sport where the serious players are few and far between. Does it make sense to flame and discourage a player that had the guts to post a video in the first place??? This is insane. To keep moving forward we can't be cutting someone up for playing a sport with such a steep learning curve. Keep it positive. You can say the same things and still aim to encourage and inspire instead of deterring people. Thoughtful posts please. :)
4. nobody trying to promote footbag or themselves as players. Take the time spent wasted on Modified to get some professional photos taken of yourself. Enter talent shows. Perform at fairs and school events. Pimp up your myspace site to promote yourself to businesses. Practice in a public place and hand out flyers or business cards. Most importantly, make videos that promote you and are directed to the general public!! (Look at my promo vid to get some ideas) Take a look at the bigger picture and do your part. Everyone can make a difference in the promotion of footbag, regardless of age. Who knows -- maybe you could even play footbag as a living if you play your cards right!! How cool would that be? Challenge yourself.

That's a load off. I would love to see Modified used as an outlet for people to learn. To learn about how to do the tricks that can lead to other new and exciting tricks. To learn about the boundaries of human possibility as to what can be done with a footbag, and players challenging the realm of possibility. To learn about how better to promote ourselves so that we can become sponsored and practice. Practice knowing that all the hard work we've put in won't be unnoticed or unappreciated in the end.

Before I go to bed, one piece of advice about style and faster progression:

Don't dwell on what is tried and true. What I mean are the tricks and links you have mastered and can do in your sleep. Instead, dwell on the tricks that are slightly out of reach. The ones that can't quite be called on by muscle memory. Aim your sessions towards practicing only these tricks and links (after your warm up of tried and true, of course). This will be challenging. And guess what -- you'll be frustrated. Extremely frustrated. If you can't get the trick, simply dip down and do it less one element. Master this with perfect form. Come back and try your harder trick. Tell yourself that getting closer to the move/link is still a success. It's a success because you are doing one thing -- progressing. Try your move, dip down and come back again. Do this over and over and don't stop till you get it. This is what will make you a better and smarter player, with faster and more noticeable improvement. The only limit to your game will be your imagination -- I truly believe that.

Good night Modified.

Keep it real.

I'm happy you wrote something long. I really enjoy brief glimpses into your mind, as they are rare.

I agree with what you say but am also guilty of most/all of it.

That's all. Thanks for the read.

i agree with pretty much everything you've said man, its cool people besides me feel the same way about modified, when i first joined (my generation of modifieders) i think set it on the down hill, all of them giving advice sometimes on concepts they themselves dont understand. Its pretty much why i dont check modified or post on modified NEAR as much as i used to, or maybe i should but try and reclaim the helpful insight that modified once had?

anyway thanks for the insight man,

hope to kick with you again at worlds ;)

thank you Jorden. Believe us, you are great. Both in footbag and life.
Don't get frustrated with this video event!! It's just beginning  . You got a lot of experience in that stuff and this is the most important thing. You are a great guy.

Could you do that trick without a plant?

Sick move no matter which way you look at it. Props

-=Tues. July 24th, 2007=-

Shred with Mosher yesterday. Results:

- bs bedwetter > dolomite swirl
- fairy same armageddon (barefoot)
- flaring drifter
- Mosher's tail but with a somersault
- pdx whirr a couple times
- new 3-dex set (you'll see...)

Watched Euros videos and read results.
Liked:
- Vasek semifinal (creative!)
- Sergey & Tina Shred 30 semi
- Vasek's ending of final routine
- Mikko winning Circle!!
Disliked:
- Vasek not competing in Circle or Shred 30 finals
- Most finals routines (too conservative and not enough variety :( )
- low Shred 30 finals scores

I usually don't post negative stuff, but Dave's posts rub off sometimes. :P

Two short videos coming really really really soon!
