Sole Purpose Portland Footblog
Just quit my job, and had a 6 day vacation in Bend, OR. I got two sick sesh's in, and I have decided to start making a recording of my strings in this manner:
The date of the shred
The time I started
Any string that is 17+ contacts I put a tally (sp?)
Any string that's above 25 contacts I put a star and the number of contacts
Then the time I ended
I think that this record wil help me see my consistancy of string length, and what I still need to improve on. Only bad thing about those sesh's is that bend air is thinner and so I got winded easily, but I almost hit mobius b2b, and I set my new Tripless record of 10, and lots of fun strings.

First off: Byrin, we need to shred together again... soon!
Secondly: I'm sorry I missed it when you came here, Aaron. When will you be back? We should shred, I heard your game was SICK from Noah.
Lastly: Last night Noah and I had a shesh, the only bad thing was that he was tired, and couldn't really play at his peak. I also thought that the sesh was for today (not yesterday) so I had a morning sesh before hand. I turned out alright, cuz i was hitting some pretty sick shiz. I did spinning DLO - pixie paradon withought actually thinking about it, and I hit pdx blender - spinning osis, and then after I realized that I have never been able to zoom out of a blender, let alone a pdx blender. I also came close to hitting 4 fearless and had a couple of good 5 5's ideas, none of which actually happened. I hit rubberman easily, and then rubberman II starting with my flipside, so hopefully I'll be able to do 2 full rubberman II's soon. Oh yeah, my first two three dex moves yesterday, fairy ripstien to flurry. Good seshs!

Watch out everyone! I'll be in your neck of the woods from 9:00pm on Friday, February 10th until 5:30pm on February 12th. Who wants to shred??? I'll be busy at some point on the 11th. I'm down to session so long as it syncs up with my plans (friend's birthday). Looking forward to seeing all of you guys.
Today I was not doing well at the beggining of the sesh. I met up with Red and Noah at about 2 for a shred, but i didn't wake up until 11:30, and then drank a monster and had a bag of corn nuts for breakfast. I was so jittery the first 2 hours that I couldn't hit anything. The good part though was later on in the session, I bagged 5 5's!!! Here was the combo -
Sumo - Alpine Fairy Beater - Tomahawk - Spinning Whirl - Paradox Torque *hand catch*
I also footed a lot of other fearless atempts trying to hit 5, such as:
Blurry Whirl - Matador - Blurry Whirl - Void
Fog - Alpine Fairy Beater - P.S. Whirl
Spinning Whirl - Blurrier
Spinning Whirl - 69 (close enough to mention, but not actually footed)
Blurry Whirl - Spinning DLO - Pixie Paradon
Matador - Sumo - Alpine Fairy Beater - P.S. Whirl
Blurry Whirl - Matador - Paradox Blener - Gyro.... shoulder smack
Fog - Alpine Fairy beater - Fog - Pixie Paradon (close to)
Needless to say, the session got better for me after I mellowed out a bit

Epic Showdown
Tuesday night I was lucky enough to witness one of the best freestyle throw downs I have seen in quite a while. We had a busy week in Portland, Sam Potter came to shred with the group Saturday, and just a couple of days later Emily Kulczyk and Nate Lindscott came to town. We had a session that night at PSU rec center. Besides Nate and Emily, Noah Jay-Bonn and Nick Landis were present.
There was a five person circle, Emily was kicking great, very smooth, and Noah represented the skills people have come to expect, long unique combinations. I clocked in a little over an hour myself, the most I've kicked straight in a while.
Eventually Noah ran off to set up for a party his band was playing at later that night, Emily was stepping in and out, and I wrapped it up and took a seat. Last two freestylers standing; Nate Lindscott and Nick Landis. Now all through the session both were throwing down, Nate had been putting down some pretty long and creative strings when Nick stepped into the circle, then one of Nick's opening combos started with Fairy Atomic Butterfly to Baroque. Later Nate told me from that point it was on.
Throughout most of the session, I think the rest of us were just messing around. But from the point when Nick hit his first couple of combos Nate really turned it on as well. This is what happened throughout the session from what I can remember (Nick and Nate please chime in with anything that I missed).
Nate hit quite a few super long combos, mixed with Flurries, Grifters, Superfly, double spins, reapers (BSOS), and at least one all uniques mostly double dex runs. One great combo that stands out was about 45 contacts or so, Nate was already 30 or so deep when he ran into the wall behind him, played for a moment against the wall, the pushed back off it for another 15 strong contacts or so. Super creative, damn near perfect mix of technical right into spinning. Nate has lost a lot of weight, he's pretty thin, much lighter on his feet, with much skinnier legs. He's definitely stepped up both his add ratio and variety. As always, he was super innovative.
Nick answered with a barrage of well... massive barrage combinations that reminded me of some of Honza's barrage combos from Art of the Game. He followed those up by Rubberman 2 mid combo. Another combo that stood out was zoom set giro whirls BSOS as well as zoom set Vortex all in the same string. Also threw Fairy Ripstein ending in dragon stall (don't know the name) to spin. There were a few fearless combos, and a lot of high add ratio combinations with tons of fives. Some pretty close attempts were Jani Walker to 69, Spinning paradox Baroque, and the first half of what I was calling Rubberman 2.5, with Fusion instead of Legbeater. I think he also tried a combo he calls Glucosaman, which I'll let him explain.
When the session finally came down to the two of them some serious stuff had already been put down, and though friendly and positive, it was pretty much understood what it was really about, the title of best freestyler in Oregon. Nate has been super sick for some time, and since Seattle, Nick has improved exponentially, utilizing the winter downtime that Noah and I have not. When Sam came to town, we had a pretty relaxed session, nothing too impressive from Nick that day, mostly screwing around. I think it took Nate's energy for him to step it up.
Towards the end of the session, each one was (respectfully) trying what the other one was doing with some pretty sweet results. Another highlight was the head to heads. One for ripwalks, one for ducks, one for dives, and one for butterfies. Nate had the ducking clippers (or where they ducking butterfies?), but Nick kept up pretty well, going fairly deep. For ripwalks, both went in about 20 or so first try, Nick won that one ending with blurry whirls about 19 or 20. Nate rocked the diving clippers with a pretty high number, Nick hit more than I thought he was capable of. The butterfly contest was the best. Each one went about 90 deep at least if not more. The best part, both were taunting each other pretty hard while going head to head. Finally, only by three butterflies I believe, Nick got it.
All in all, the showdown was pretty epic, nobody was denying what it was when it was over, and everyone was very supportive and positive (no rivalries). I won't say who it slightly went to in the end, but only wish I had filmed it. Props to both freestylers, I believe both have the ability to deliver even more as well. I'd say the shred was one for the books in Oregon, and again, one of the best showdowns I have seen in some time. Lasting about four hours, I would be hard pressed to believe that there was another session that night anywhere that had more juice between two freestylers. It reminded me of what I really dig about this sport. Not bad for more or less a last minute session. Special thanx to Emily again for coming out to visit.

Nice post Red! Just a couple of things though:
Nate hit a 18 contact Tripless run (my RECORD is only 11, and he can bust 18 no prob)
Glucosaman drill (sp?) - Blurrage > S&M Smasher > Fusion (rubberman with all the downtime dexes doubled, although I have yet to complete the fusion on either side)
While Red was out, Nate and I had a kind of Fearless face off, he was hitting some combos that were pretty impressive (Pheonix > Blurriest > P.S. whirl, plus others with Superfly
) I finally hit my three 5 triple dex combo (Janiwalker > Fog > Pixie Paradon)
All I have to say is
Nate is a beast! That sesh was ridiculous! I look forward to the next time we shred, and I must admit that nate did, in fact, shred me O-U-T!
P.S. Thanks to
Emily for coming up, the posse will have to come visit for you event in June. Look forward to Shredding with you again!

I look forward to that too. And now you have to come to Santa Cruz in June to make up for misspelling by name.

Yay! I'm feeling better now, and since the weather is starting to clear up, I've been able to have a few sessions. I'm starting to practice up for Missoula, comp training and gerneral shred.
=General Shred =
- Working on string length (again!)
- Getting my Add ratio higher than 3.1 (I did a video calculation)
- Freestlying fours in a row (I can plan it out just fine, it's the random thinking that gets me)
Everytime I take a break of more than a week from hard shredding I get more stabel with my moves, but my string length goes WAY down. I'm thinking it's becuase i'm not very good at cardio activity, so when I take a long break it lowers it even more.
+Comp Shred+
- Shred 30 planning (going to do better this time, i.e. less threes and repeats)
- FINALLY got a good saftey sick three down, which I can hit 4 out of 5 times (Alpine Fairy Beater - Tomahawk - Spinning Whirl)
- Trying to get a Beast down (yeah right! But i'm trying Alpine Matadore - Mullet - Spinning Blender... funny how that's the same thing as my safety, only hopped up on the Juice!)
