Daily Drill:
*500 consecutive kicks
*50 consecutive toes, b+f:
plant set foot, no hop
plant and hop
no plant of set foot till hop into stall (getting much easier)
*50 consecutive insides
*50 consecutive non-plant insides (jumping into)
*50 consecutive non-planted inf.
*50 consecutive planted inf. (Tap...tap-tap...Tap)

Highlights:
*swirls (almost 4 consecutive)
*wauxpinX2-simple swirl-string
*good steps out of weak side
*Drifter on each side, despite exhaustion

Almost all of it is on tape, so I am going to upload it for feedback. And because I am continuing my "trial by public humiliation" strategy. Meanwhile, it will give a good insight into how I go about practicing swirl. That may help someone out- who knows?

imo, practicing from hand catch, to a hand catch isn't effective practice for most tricks. At the least, toe stall > whatever trick you're practicing > pdx mirage or some other bop.. that way it's more similar to a string in terms of rhythm and balance.

I think you're a teense off balance on some tricks. I see you step away from the bag after tricks to catch your balance, and your misses often have that step/catch balance. That's an easy one to keep in mind that I think will help.

Looking good Ian, like seeing these vids!

edit, finished watching.. Only commenting because I think you like advice, if you don't want me to comment, let me know. Anyhow, the ducks aren't there in my opinion. They're just high sets going past your forehead, not behind your neck. I like to visualize a clean duck or dive being beneath my ears but above my shoulders. Aim for your collar bone, stretch your neck, and really go under it. It's a dex with your neck, not just setting it higher than your head. Hope it helps, I really do think you're making good progress, comments are meant to be helpful and friendly :-)

Hi Bob,

I new that you'd deliver.

Clearly the ducks are "the". Sometimes my form on these is so bad, and other times it is better. Usually when I play frequently I remember to keep it in check, but these days I play mostly by myself, and I am schooling different things. Your advice sounds good though, and I will apply it once I start incorporating sets of 50 ducking/diving clippers in my pre-session. At this point in time my pre-sessions use up my energy before I can get around to a solo-session. For instance, yesterday did not even get around to more than a few drifters or any dt paradons (which I was visualizing my whole way home, after practicing these switch-planted, "simple," dt toe stalls.)

So, I had about 5 strings in the last 3 solo sessions and they all have wretched form, and they are all on tape. For your viewing pleasure. And I love the feedback. The ducks are obvious though. Do you have any input on the drifters, weak-sided steps or swirls?

I think you are right about the hand catch. My approach, after a year of schooling swirls on and off is that starting with a hand catch will help. It is the first step. Then comes doing it from another trick. I find this is the case when a trick frustrates me. Makes things easier to map out and keep track of in my head while I try to use my limited and fading daily energy.

I sort of hear what you're saying about the hand catch, and giving yourself every advantage while learning etc. But I still disagree - but what works for everyone is so different, so it's just my opinion. I used to practice from a hand catch and then into a hand catch, I just don't do so anymore.

My advice on swirls probably isn't gospel because I'm learning as well... But, I think the slightest of pause between set and dex is healthy for learning them and just like that style a lot personally. Also, I'd avoid freezing the clipper before the swirl - similar to my hand catch argument.

Drifter.. yours are like mine, kind of up timey - which is OK, but won't aid in any bigger drifter tricks later. I'm trying to be more mid time and down time with them - this is the style needed for multi component drifter tricks. I visualize high knee, whip the heel through, on the dex leg (whereas you in this vid, and my own natural tendency, is to sort of jump and momentum over it with the thigh instead of really using the leg to crank over and around). To fix, I do a lot more toe set drifters (either toe > op dex... or toe ss dex) as it requires a leggier motion.

I hear you on warm ups taking lots of the session energy. I do the same thing.

Thanks, Bob!

I am loving the feedback.

It sort of hurts to think that the drifters are sort of uptime, as I am still struggling to make my paradons dt. You are right though, now that I am thinking about it. Perhaps the learing processese will resonate well and I'll learn a bit more from each.

Regarding the swirls- I like the pause idea. It makes a ton of sense. I do this more naturally when stringing. When I hand-clipper-set, the motion is more like an uptime dex, and I am not fighting it yet because it may help me with my ripsteins. I tried one ripstein yesterday and I got my foot under it. It felt nice.

Yesterday I started out doing swirls from a hand toss, went on to swirls from tiltless, and then swirls bsos, guiltless (which I hit a few times.) Once I hit swirl-swirl on my weak side I let myself move on to other tricks.

The one thing that I found is that reps of 50 clippers is quite helpful for me, as it is forcing me to sink into the clipper so that I can maintain my breathe. I think I will focus on swirling out of both variations of clipper next time, and once sets of 50 butterflies become part of my warmup I will then link swirls out of infinities.

Thanks again for the feedback!

I think you should try and get a straighter set. You move around way too much. And the problem as I see is that you don't focus enough on your stalls.
I really like all the wauxpins. Such a cool trick.

After four days of family visiting I kicked today. Skipped the opening drills because I squeezed them in Sunday, and because I had little patience. Plus, I walked to work (four miles.) Plus, I wanted to reserve energy to school some components.

*My left whirl needs major attention still
*My weak step is getting stronger and the form makes better sense than on the one I already "have."
*Wauxspin is better set straight
*I need to keep working out
*my website is getting better- please check out the video section of ibrill.com

edit: since i deleted the footage from youtube:
*twirl-wauxpin, etc

Side-note: My blog is possessed and screws up right before my page is almost full. That, combined with the knowledge that I am starting to focus on promoting my art is making me consider changes in my web presence. So, my Footbag videos have been deleted, and my posts here will become sparser, although I play much more than usual.

Yesterday and today: Solo@Arsenal. I have been drilling Simple Swirl and Ducking Clippers

Yesterday:
*Simp. Swirl to frozen stall
*Simp. Swirl X3, set to high and missed the fourth. Had I stalled it more I would not have set it too high

Today:
*Simple swirl bsos
*Simple swirl- far simple swirl (weak side)
*Far simple swirl- frozen simple swirl
*Ducking clipper X3- frozen simple swirl- ducking clipper-far simple swirl
*Weak far simple swirl, multiple times, different strings
*Multiple weak simple swirls from ducking clipper
*Infinity-frozen simple swirl
*Made progress with both wauxspins

I practice later. I ended up winded today. I sort of want to push myself a bit more to increase my endurance.

I have been doing reps of slow pushups. I am trying to learn how to slow down my breathing when exercising. I am trying to relax myself and maintain a better overall integrity of form. If I can do 50 infinities they have to be calm. 50 pushups must be at least as attainable as 50 infinities. Once I can do 50 pushups I should be able to hit of most tricks I regularly execute.

EDIT:

I did go back and kick briefly.

*ducking clipper-ducking infinity-frozen simple swirl-osis-string-ducking clipper-weak simple swirl- string
*frozen simple swirl X2
*weak (right sided) simple swirl from left inside kick
*schooled weak paradox mirage-weak butterfly swirl-only got underneath it- this is a new important drill for me
*osis-weak simple swirl-string

Kicked solo @ arsenal park.

Felt great. Highlights in vid (new youtube account strictly for footbag- I will put some videos back up, maybe.)

I am working on my left side ducks. Seriously. Working. On them. Also, I am trying to hold the bag longer so that my set is more controlled.

Kicked solo @ Arsenal for 20 minutes before trying to beat the rain and mowing my lawn. Should have kept kicking instead, but at least I can say I tried :) (half-done)

Literally spent twenty minutes trying to execute my weak-side simple swirl with a natural motion. I cut out at least 10 ducking clipper-weak simple swirl- hand catches.

I am quite excited by this. I know that I need to improve my left clipper set and I know that I need to catch my sets deeper, hold them longer, and in the case of my weak-side simple swirl- set higher

These youtube videos are so much moree embarrassing than anything else! Makes me want to jog, lift weights and really tighten-up my game

You are welcome to watch if you want. Feedback is appreciated. These are mostly to embarrass myself to improve, more than anything.

Great session with Matt @ Arsenal.

Families enjoyed watching us the entire session. The basketball courts were great too :)

Highlights:
* Matt footed pixie paradon swirl multiple times but no concrete stall, seal or hand grab.
* Matt hit one string with a bunch of spinning moves- DDD X3
* Matt hit barfly- gyro mirage and it looked SO styley
* LOTS of sick Matt shred

Personal Highlights:
*New combo: whirl- weak simple swirl
*New combo: frozen simple swirl X2-twirl- pm- string
*New combo: ducking clipper- frozen weak simple swirl- pm- wauxpin two different times
*Ducking butterfly X7
*New combo: Spinning clipper- frozen simple swirl- string
*Spinning simple swirl first try
*New combo: ducking clipper-pm-wauxpin-frozen simple swirl-osis twice in one string
*Footed(?) weak whirling swirl (almost a new move)
EDIT:
*Simple Swirl X4-string (personal record so far)

felt really good to shred today :)

Kicked despite a sore-throat. Probably getting sick due to weather change. God it's nice to leave the heat and humidity of the Summer though! :D

Practiced whirls. My left side is soooo gnarly looking. I remember how to learn this game again.

Practiced ducks first though. Big improvement, but still not there. I left out about 15 minutes of b2b drillage.

Practiced spins. Had some special moments with them before I became frustrated.

I will hit combinations of whirls, rev. swirls and simple swirls on both sides next session. Then, I will also school spins and start practicing steps again.
