I have'nt read your whole blog David, but I just noticed this and was compelled to correct you.bigdirtyfoot wrote:I know I'll probably never be good at footbag either.
Saying you will never be good at footbag is total bollocks (please excuse my french).
First of all, I believe you are already good at footbag. I think I am somewhat good at footbag, but I can't duck my pixie set, and in a certain video I recieved from you recently I believe you did?
I honestly believe anybody can be good at footbag weather they be tall, short, skinny, fat or even un-coordinated.
Back in 4th form I was kicked out of Hacky circles because I was too un-co, I couldent even kick the bag (I still can't really lol) but now I can do long strings and those hacky players dont even know what I am doing, and I do believe you can do the same.
Lets be real here man, footbag is a sport. Anyone can be good at it, but it takes practice. If you want to be as good as Vasik you need to play many hours a day and school everything till its so tedious and boring you never wana see a footbag again. Ie. treat footbag like a real sport.
I bet if you played 2 hours every night for the next 6 months you will be guiltless. All it takes is practice.
What do u think man? Am I right?

You're definitely right. I have a really tough time with motivation and confidence and it carries over to everything I do. I am very self-critical and I often see others that are fulfilling the same passions as I do at a higher level and become extremely discouraged. I have a lot of natural talent in (mostly) everything and I rely on it to the extent that I don't ever practice anything. I was able to pick up footbag and be able to perform a few tricks without ever playing much. Same with trombone, and poetry, and bowling, and mostly everything. It always takes a certain amount of concentration, but I usually have the ability to block everything else out and focus on what I'm doing, and I think that's where it comes from.
HOWEVER I do still have absolutely horrendous practice patterns. I never have the motivation to practice anything for a long period of time, and so I gradually become better at everything in some sort of cycle. It's such slow progress that I often don't notice it. For example, I plan on being a jazz trombonist in the future, and making a living off of that (somewhere other than I am now). However, I know I don't practice nearly enough to perform to the ability that I want to. On the other hand, when people hear me play and tell me how sweet some solo I took was, it feels great to know that I can sound great to others (while simply okay to myself) with little or no practice. I have always taken pride in this, for some weird reason. I think it's a facet of my laziness. For another example, I never studied in school but I could always do pretty well if I focused on what I was doing. However, had I studied, I would possibly be at a better university or even in another country by now (I was in a program that allowed me to have the ability to go to other countries for uni, but I never applied myself to it and decided that I was just along for the ride). My parents and I have had many many talks about this, and I know that the real reason I never practice anything is because of the intense happiness I get from being able to not practice, and still be good at stuff. However, I realize that the feeling would be ten times greater if I was able to practice and achieve a higher level of ability. It's just that I can't seem to get there. Laziness is blocking me. One thing I noticed last year at uni, was that when I got out of my parent's home, I was much happier and able to propel myself forward and maintain a higher level of practice (at least on the trombone). However, since I've been home this summer, I have practiced maybe five times total. That is absolutely pitiful. Yet, I smile when I think about it because I know I can still go on stage and play a pretty nice solo if I give it my all. I don't know what to do about that.
One final example. All music majors at my uni have to have what is called a "jury" (fairly common in uni's in USA, not sure about other countries). Essentially, we prepare a piece for 2-3 months and then we play it for three faculty members and they grade us on our performance. My friend Chris practiced his trumpet piece for 3 months, and got a B+. I, however, slacked off the entire second semester and prepared my piece in one day after having practiced only three other times in the semester, and I got an A. Chris listened to my jury outside the room, and when I came out he nearly punched me and told me how angry he was that I was able to pull off a good performance with one day of practice, when he totally worked his ass off for 3 months (and believe me, I heard him, he definitely worked hard). The feeling I got at that moment was so intense and awesome that I forgot the fact that I thought I did poorly, and focused on the fact that so many other people thought I did well, and that I had been practicing 14 hours a week (they make us notate how often we practice on our jury grading sheet, and I lied). So, that's probably my best example of my low motivation to pratice things.
In response more to what you said:
I feel "okay" at footbag. I hate that I have neither a toe nor a clipper game. I have a semi-toe game. Bullocks is a funny word. Yes, I can duck my strongside pixie set. Yet I have no weakside pixie set at all. In fact, I have no other sets whatsoever. I have been wanting to try stepping and atomic but they just are not coming.
I think that the abilities in this sport cater to skinny short guys. There are plenty awesome players that are my favorites that are tall, but very few are fat. I am tall and overweight. I have no motivation whatsoever to lose weight. I think that being tall is a supreme factor for suckage. There just aren't that many tall players. I love watching footage of people like Chad, but you don't see him going all out like Vasek or some of these prodigy 14 year-olds who bust crazily everyday.
I don't really want to be as good as Vasek. I don't want to put that much time into footbag. I want to put that time into trombone/jazz. I find that footbag pulls at my trombone/jazz practice schedule and vice versa. It is really hard to have so many passions, but it is also a blessing because I can meet so many great people through all of my obsessions. If I played 2 hours every night for the next 6 months I would definitely be guiltless, if not tripless! You are definitely right about that, and about most of what you are saying. I just gotta get off my lazy ass and do something with my life. When I get back to uni I hope to make a fresh start and really explore a lot of things further, but being home totally drains me of energy and I often go to work for 10 hours and then just come home afterwards and go to sleep immediately. It's hard to put my necessary 3-4 hours of trombone and 2 hours of footbag into my schedule, while also trying to finish reading books and watching movies and socializing, and writing poetry (that I hope to get published someday). I will figure it out someday. Thanks for the great post though, and I hope you figure out how to duck your pixie set some day (set then think about the duck, and think UP!).
PS. Goodness, what a Ken-style post.

Gah, I leave for a weekend and I'm already on the second page. I guess that's a good thing.
Anyways my weekend was super fun, but mainly just because I spent less than 30 minutes with my own family. We're having problems and I'm just completely sick of seeing them. As I have been most of my life. 2nd semester last year I saw them 2 days and talked to them perhaps 10 times, if not less. I'd prefer even less.
This weekend was cool. I hung out with my friends, and we had a shred. It was actually nice. They have a lighted tennis courts by their house, so we went over there. This one guy, Josh, which is Luke's older brother, learned toe stalls. Luke learned guay, and came close to da da curve a bunch of times. I didn't really hit anything new but I had a few good strings. We watched Natural Born Kickers and Sick 03. It was pretty fun. I wish I could've hung out with Annie (their sister) more though. Oh well I have the rest of the summer, assuming my parents don't take away the car or something, which I'm fully anticipating, since I probably "ruined" their weekend or something. I just fucking hate spending times with them.
Argh and I keep footing parkwalk but not hitting it.

Dude it sucks about your family. Perhaps not spending much time with them is a good idea. It's always important to remember that no matter what it feels like they do still love you though.
Great to hear that you're schooling some new freestylers. I find that very rewarding at times although it's always difficult to know how much to push them and stuff like that. I tend to treat people as if they're just like I am - so very rarely ever give any strong directions about what they should try to hit because I tend to really resent stuff like that (irrationally). I just give suggestions - "hey that's looking really good, why don't you try doing it a like this..." but I really don't know if that's the best thing to do. If somebody tells me I'm doing something wrong (which usually I will have figured out for myself) - I might get (irrationally) really pissed off at them but I also get very motivated to get it right
Hmm. That was a random kind of hijack of your blog
Anyway best of luck with things. If you're biggest concern in life is just that you don't get on that well with your family then you're doing pretty well (compared with the majority of the world) and I'm sure you can work things out!

My family and I will be fine as soon as I'm out of the house, I'm sure. That's what happened last year. I just don't like living in their house.
Yeah it's DEFINITELY cool that I found new freestylers. Hoss actually just joined modified, so hopefully he'll start posting a bit and reading my blog and downloading videos and stuff. And I'm also trying to get both Hoss and Luke to buy Lavers and quality bags. It's definitely hard to know how to push people; I generally just try to make sure everyone's having fun and that they learn something or break a record or something every time we play.

In spirit of Jeremy’s 4000th post, I’m writing my 2000th. Wow he trumped me even though I’ve been on the forums longer. Congrats, loser.
I started playing footbag in 2000. I was a freshman in high school. My first memory of footbag relates back to 1996 when I bought a footbag (a Sipa Sipa) and received a “Footbag World” subscription card with it. You know, one of those things that falls out of a magazine and they want you to subscribe to the magazine? If you sent off 5 bucks to WFA back then, they sent you back a membership card and I got a free magazine with it. I had a record of four inside kicks, barefoot. I read the magazine and was so intimidated and confused by what I read that I decided to learn more about it. So would reread the magazine every night, trying to understand it. There were 2 trick tips every issue. I think the trick tips for the magazine that I have are whirl and… well, something else completely ridiculous. Wait, I think it was clipper! Yes, it was clipper and whirl, from the Spring issue in 1996. Clipper is still a ridiculous move, almost TEN (whoa I’ve been in footbag for nine years technically) years! I remember reading that someone hit blur so clean that they could hit it on paper and it would still be silent. I didn’t know what a blur was, of course. This stuff was totally confusing to me. So after I sucked at footbag for a few more years, I found the voy forum in 2000!
The voy forum was where it was at. None of this PHP shit. It was one of those forums where it was a bunch of jumbled threads and it was all one page and when one thread was updated it would go to the top and show all the other posts as links as well. It was very cluttered and very intimate. I even had the number of the forum (it was www.voy.com/####) memorized and I used it as my PIN number for a bank card I had at the time. This was my freshman year in high school, btw. Anyways. It was Cole, Bob, Erik, and MIKE WILSON (btw if anyone has contact info for him – let me know, I need to email him or call him to talk about some things). There were some other people. I think Jer (the original creator of modified) was on Voy as well. The advice I got from the voy forum was awesome. They told me to learn kicks before stalls, stalls before tricks, and … they really helped a lot. I think hackrifice was on its second update by the time I saw it. Flipsider wasn’t even out. There weren’t many shred videos out that were easily accessible. I would download Ryan footage overnight and watch it OVER AND OVER again the next day. Someone (I really wish I could remember who, I need to thank them) illegally copied Tricks of the Trade and Sultans of Shred for me on one tape and sent it to me. Sultans cuts off with about 30 minutes left, because that’s what TOTT took up. I watched that tape a lot too. Mike Wilson sent me footage of himself playing over the internet. He was the guy who got me into footbag. I bought two of his hand stitched 4 panel facile sandbags. They are so classic. I didn’t have the money for a 32. Everyone on that forum was nice and very helpful.
Anyways, eventually voy closed down the forum on us and we migrated to another forum. I forgot what it was called, but Rob Fuller found it and then became active in our little online community. Keep in mind the freestyle lists at .org were still running. I would print them off… 30 pages at a time, and go study them in the bathroom while sitting on the toilet with my pants around my ankles. Then I would go watch Ryan footage. Then I would practice. I got to where I could do over 100 kicks with ease, and then I started learning tricks. First was neck stall. Then dragonfly kick. Then mirage. Then pixie. Then I learned pixie set. Then smear. It was fun but I am a slow footbag learner. I’m not built for this sport, I just love it.
Then modified was created. And I’m still bitter about it, because I am #11 in the member’s list, but that’s because I was away for a day right when it was created and Rob didn’t tell me about it! Otherwise I would be #3! Oh well! Anyways, Rob and I talked everynight on MSN. Rob was awesome. Erik was awesome too. Erik actually saved my life. Before the mass deletion I made a post about me committing suicide and Erik talked me out of it. Thanks man, someday maybe I’ll suffer through eating one of your cookies as repayment.
Modified grew over time. Leadership changed, etc. Flipsider forums was created, and people from there migrated over here. A few of the people at modified were bitter about it at the time, myself included. Having kids who can’t spell and talk about their bongs post on here is sort of annoying. (Hey Zach you’re cool with me now though!) I realize that the explosion on modified helped build the community a lot. Footbag.org forums were created around the same time. A lot of people were my heroes. It was good times.
Then “Brad Kaplan is the Biggest Dick in Freestyle” was created on Flipsider. That was a long thread about how much BAP sucked and whatnot. The angst in the thread was pretty ridiculous. Me and Jeremy still joke about this thread and how funny it is now.
I don’t have a favorite thread on modified really. I liked the janiwalker thread a lot. I am sad that Rob left. And Windsor. Windsor was nice to me as well.
I have a lot of friends. I can’t list them all like Jeremy did and tell each one what they meant to me. Everyone on modified means a lot, of course. There are certain people that I have met in person, or talked to on the phone or through PMs or IM’s. I like the community a lot.
I’m very glad I got involved in footbag. I look forward to making my 3000th post next week and telling you about the next chapter of my time in footbag and on modified.

I studied the footbag.org trick list on the toilet too .
There were two five add tricks on this list and I was like - holy shit no way for me to hit one someday maybe I will make it to the 3 adds.

I don't read other people's blogs really, but that was a very good read.
You were there from the start of modified and before, it's interesting
to read all that! Go, youngblood go!
Being one of those who don't seem to be built for this sport either
(since my body is supplying me with all kinds of injuries), I still
love this sport so much. It doesn't matter how fast you learn or how
good you get - it's all about fun. (*brag* and even though I'm injured
I recently hit far symple dyno in pants - that move feels too awesome

Everyone else's osis kind of flied away, and most of Chris's tricks flew off but it's definitely an improvement and it's sweet to have people be excited about playing. Luke's flip smear is sweet and we've been having a competition to see who could hit it first and he won and that sucks, so I will learn it soon!
We played four square and EVERYONE had fun! It was great. Anyways that is all and we're going to bed because it's 4 AM and we just finished shredding.
Oh, side note: my old Lavers that I grew out of fit Chris so he's using them now, and Luke's buying a 32 and Lavers. Sweet!
Today we had a sweet Alien Shred at Addville. This is what people hit:
David
Ducking Osis
Ducking Butterfly Kick>Spinning Toe (Styley)
Smudge Clean
Smear>Symp Mirage
Footed Assasin AGAIN (Boo!)
Double Around The World
Ducking Clipper Kick
Flip Pixie Legover
Ducking Butterfly
Footed Terrage
Footed Phoenix
Pixie Knee Bump Mirage
Pixie SS Osis
Pixie OS Osis
Flip PLO>Smear
Smear>Smudge
Luke
Flip Smear!
Osis
Chris
Ducking Butterfly Kick
Mirage
Dragonfly Kick
Clipper Kick
Osis
Spinning Outside Kick

Hey, I went to my friend that lives in Winterville's house this weekend. It's like two minutes from G-ville!!! When you get back to school I'll be able to come up there when ever I want! Just had to let you know.

Sweet, that's cool - we'll be able to shred even easier now! I'm sure it will be cool - we won't turn into anything like the Vegas crew, let's try to rotate spots to make it convenient for everyone involved. By the way - T Shirts and Banners for the NC Crew in the near future!
Nathan - thanks for the kind words.
How's my bag coming along?
Hmm. I haven't played in a while. I just want to bitch about money. I have this ex-friend who gets her college and everything paid for, who has the gall to complain about gas to me when she doesn't even have to pay for her housing or her tuition or anything. It totally bugs me, because I pay for everything but my books. I'm working on my budget and it makes me want to cry because I just can't handle looking at all the money I'm going to have to come up with somehow.
Anyways, as far as footbag goes I feel pretty good. I'm improving. I really want to take the time to find the old Mike Wilson videos I have and see if I can hit the strings he was hitting back in 2000, now. I remember back then being blown away, and thinking that if I could ever hit that stuff I would be psyched. I think it was easy tiltless stuff. I think it had whirls in it though. I remember him gasping for air in a vid and exclaiming "10 seconds is a long time!"
Anyways, so hopefully Luke and Gabe and David and I will have a shred sometime soon. I'm really glad Luke got on modified. I wish I could get Chris to post more, and Josh and Gabe and David. It's funny, I got Gabe to sign up back in 2002 with me, and he's the 12th member, but he's only posted on modified once or twice, and that was in the dark ages, so those posts are lost.
Anyways...
lateS!
