800th post in this blog!!! woo!!!

okay, so im gonna try to be more optimistic. today wasn't too bad. the head of the graphic design department at my school pulled me into his office today. he said he heard i was a little too advanced for my multimedia (web design) class... and that someone called the school with a freelance job. looks like im going to be making a web site for some country music person! i dont like country... but the exciting thing is that the head of my department thought of me first for this job! that really says something. i havent called them yet, ill be calling them tomorrow. hopefully this goes well and ill get paid well and it'll be good for my portfolio.

another thing, it looks like brian and i will be taking a typeface design class this summer! this is the first time and last time this class will be offered at my school, and it will be taught by a well know type designer named lori young. im really excited.

even with the summer class we are taking, we will be able to afford a trip sometime this summer. we are hoping to find a nice summer jam... so if theres a jam next summer that you think would be worth it, please let us know. unfortunately, we cant make it overseas or to nyj. but something in the summer in north america would be nice.

we are getting ready for the knoxville jam on saturday. chris ryan will be driving too our house from huntsville, leaving his doggy with my family, then we will make the 3 hour drive. the event is 6 hours long. so we will come back, and chris will stay the night. im excited to meet players i havent met, and i hope to hit some new tricks.

i need to make a list of what i can hit consistently. the list is short... but it's consistent, and im proud of myself. ive never persisted at anything physical, so footbag has been different for me. i always hear people talking about getting your foundations before trying things out of your range... so ive been trying to do things the right way and slowly. im really proud of myself, and im tired of being compared to the faster progressing players. im am me, and i do this at my pace.

both sided:
-pickup
-ss pickup
-legover
-ss legover
-mirage
-ss mirage (not pixie. this is downtime, not uptime)
-mosher's tail
-clipper (need to work on consecutives)

one sided (need both sided):
-atw - in>out (need both ways too)
-butterfly
-illusion (really forced. i need more practice and tips)
-pixie (again forced. need practice. this is new for me)
-clipper set ss mirage
-pdx mirage (new trick and lots of fun)

what i need to do:
-pay attention to magic hop and putting the weight on the ball of my foot. when i get into kicking, i have a problem remembering these things. im going to try much harder.
-work on atw both sides. i need this before anything, since its the most basic move of them all. work from the bottom up, is what i say. i figure if im doing uptime sets, and cant hit this simple of a trick, then im in trouble.
-consecutive clippers. both same side and op side.
-flip butterfly. then consecutive butterflies.
-illusion form. flip illusion. i need help with this. it seems some people do it hippy and some people do it leggy. im not sure which is better for later tricks.
-flip pdx mirage.
-hitting all the tricks above from a clipper.

that's pretty ambitious for me. sam cloughcloughclough told me lonn said to practice 10 minutes a day, then bump it up to 10 minutes twice a day. then bump it up more. ive been successful this week with 10 minutes a day... and i plan on resting tomorrow for the event on saturday. with the practice this week ive been able to do some clippers back to back everytime i practive... and this is far better than how i was at worlds.

so yeah, if you have any tips for me i would really appreciate them. especially on the illusions and pixies, since these are my newer components and less practiced components. also, feel free to watch my sick3 for online comps and give me tips on form and stuff.

thanks for reading!

the blog title reeled me in , and now i have to post.

I wanted to comment on 2 things.

First, about the learning curve and going at your own pace:

Depending on what you want to get out of footbag, you should conduct your practice differently. For example, if you want to have fun by being able to hit big tricks, then you should start to skool dbl dexes now as you continue to build your foundation. If your goal is to be a really consistent and solid player, then school the shit out of your basics until they're totally dialed. IMO, this approach isn't the most "fun." You definitely don't need to keep up with the pace of any other players, but sometimes it offers you a nice challenge to try to learn things at an equivalent pace with another person. It helps to push your game, but then again, why are you schooling trick X, because YOU want to hit it, or because someone else is learning it? In the end, I would say do what you think is fun and build on that. For me it was working my foundation while I learned to hit advanced tricks. It wasn't until my 5tyh year into freestyle that I was able to link 100 guiltless or tiltless links, I think footbag was more fun for me because i tried to push my body to learn and hit hard moves. Just thoughts.

2) I call ss pickup (esp if there is no plant) an in-to-out ATW. And I call ss legover (esp if no plant) an out-to-in ATW. If you can hit those moves, you can hit ATWs both ways.
My name: Jeremy Mirken, AKA Chocolatey Shatner, AKA jerk enemy rim.

I kick it with trunk chef elf and liz luck key my.

yah, i plant on same side stuff. unless its clipper set ss something. i think plants on same side stuff is stylie. (edit: but i see what you mean. i guess i can do them both sides and both ways and didnt even realize it)

im not really about hitting the big tricks. for me, learning how to link things together and getting longer strings is fun. and goofing off with pinchers and weird moshers tails. im happy with what im trying to learn because it's fun when things finally click together and i can link it. once ive got these foundation things down, ill move on to more advanced tricks... and maybe my idea of fun will change when that comes around. im not really footbagging to win comps, or footbagging to be the best, or footbagging ot hit big tricks. im enjoying that "ah-ha!" feeling.

Definitely school those consecutive clippers. Get to where you can do 30+ on each side. And work on drills, and turn them into strings. Like clip>ss pickup>op clip>ss pickup>op clip>ss legover>op clip ss legover. It's a great 8 contact tiltless drill. Work on that flip butterfly, then when you have it, sub that in where the clippers are on that drill. Also work on clip>op clip x 30+ contacts. School infinity. I think you really have a grasp of where you can take your game, but you do need to build that foundation.

I agree, but slightly disagree with Grommet. I originally took the approach of following what felt "right" and easy for me, and developed into a pretty darned good guiltless player.

Then I hit a wall.

When I hit the wall, the fun of progressing (afterall, I think that's what we all really like when you get down to it.. finding new ways to have fun with the game) was over. Now, I find myself at 31 years old doing ATW's and illusions etc. so that I can progress once again.

In other words, even if you decide you want to ultimately be a big trick player, I still think your current approach of getting very comfortable with the basic components will serve you very well.

On the other hand, I think his point was really that you can practice basics, and do some practice on harder stuff too if you choose to. That's true >> that's the point I'm getting to now. It's more difficult to stay disciplined because the bigger stuff is more fun. But a little sacrifice now will payoff later.

Done rambling.

we got back from the knoxville jam around 10 last night. it looks like my parents got rid of the hot tub. we are so sore that we can barely move. i helped my friend move furniture on friday, and footagged all day yesterday. i pulled a muscle in my left leg... and one in my arm. i guess the only thing to do is rest it off.

i sold out all of my footbags! i brought 5! looks like ive gotta make some more, too...

knoxville had an unofficial sick 3 and sick 1. brian won open sick 1 and got a gift card. i made 4th in amiture sick 1 with moshers tail. i didnt place in sick 3 cause i didnt catch it. hardly anyone caught their bags. oh well.

we met a cool guy named chase from maine. he showed us his van/home. it was pretty swankin.

so i guess im gonna do homework and stitch all day. no point trying to go do anything.

im getting a black eye from my yoyo collision. its my first black eye. its pretty painful, and kinda swollen around the bleedy part. (it was on my cheekbone/temple area). couldve used a stitch or two. fuck that.

i need to pump some bags out, im getting lazy.

got a replacement lens for my glasses today. its nice to see clearly. i like seeing.

my body is sore. ive felt kinda shitty today, just like... groggy/tired. almost buzz like. whatever.

ghengis grill was badass. i got my food too spicy for this time. (it wasnt as hot as the other times, but still) and cheesecake. mmmmm.

i think its shower time.

ive been drinking like half as much soda as normal. ive got a headache most of the time now, but i sleep better. probably better for me. my pee has been clear. its a good thing.

the last session was nice. im finally hitting moves out of clipper. my strings are getting a little longer. i think the most contacts in a string (w/o toe stall fillers) i can do is 13.

id like some advice on illusions. are they supposed to be dexed around the calf? or more around the thigh? ive got no idea.

man. my eye is fucked up. it looks like either the busted blood vessel in it is spreading, or its just bleeding more. either way, its looking worse. (my black eye is green now.)

i went to the dentist today. i think about 6 cavities were filled... idk. 3 teeth were worked on. they put a anesthetic shot in the bottom of my tongue. it hurts the most.

i forgot my floss, so all the bags i just cut out will have to sit until i get home.

i got some new badass yoyos in the mail. they were "flawed" but only by looks. they own, and not many people get the ones i got. (plus one isnt engraved, so its more rare i think)

jeez. life is going so fast it seems. its almost finals. most of my semester projects are done, but my sketchbooks are pretty far behind. school ends DEC 7. i gotta do so much shit. stitch like 30 bags by nyj, fill all my orders, and train footbag shit. gah. no time.

i need some new headphones. ive soldered mine like 4 times, and theyre just shitty because theyre falling apart every few weeks. i guess i can always just keep fixing them.

gotta get back to cleaning toilets.

ive been down lately. family stuff has been sucking these days... and ive felt worthless because of it. my favorite footbagger hates me now. i dont have time for myself anymore. and now this.

i was pissed off, so i decided im gonna go outside and footbag alone. the short lived session started well. i hit osis a few times. i broke my ss mirage record... now its 13. i was feelin really good. so i start trying whirl. and i thought i was doing it.. so i called brian to come outside and see. so i did it again, but i was dexing it at my thigh... so its really a ss butter. well i knew i could do those before... so it wasnt new. so i started trying to dex it at my calf/ankle. bam. rolled my ankle.

i think my pinky toe is more messed up than my ankle. my ankle probably isnt sprained. uggggggg. im giving it a rest for a couple days... maybe more than a week even.

this is sort of ironic. about 15 minutes before i decided to footbag, i told brian i quit. he said "just quit modified" and we talked about it. i didnt really wanna quit kicking... i wanna quit some of the areas of this forum. so i went to footbag to get rid of my stress.

Holly you should move to Boise, by yourself. Your game is only weak because of your boyfriend, but you have so much intense potential. When you dropped your mosher's tail in comp and then immediately tried it again and hit it that is when your will and style shined, you just need to be in the right environment to break out of your slump and push your game to the next level. Ever since I moved here my life has been intense and full. We train SO much! This is a real invitation. Life is crazy like that. We all agree that if you came here you would get so good and be so happy. You could even sew bags as a source of income and utilize your design skills in what is becoming our own shred commune. I know you are in the middle of a degree, but I think there are chances in life that come rarely and this may be one of them for you. More and more shredders are drawn to Idaho and we all agree that you would be welcome here. No matter where your adventures take you, good luck and may you phase out the hurtful things in your life and cultivate positive energy.

I rolled my ankle too holly! Rolled ankle pals!

Mine went craaaaaaaaaack (like when i normally crack the joint; it's just sprained not broken). Later at school I thought it would have been funny if I had said "snapple! pop! kellogs rice crispies!".

ice!

UPDATE: My ice pack exploded. :O
