If you cant hit it, just drill Rev swirls x10 on each side a bunch of times and you'll get it then. Keep it up dude.

So...this day...
Well, most importantly I signed the contract that is going to get me the money from this grant. That's a very important step, but not the end of the line.
Earlier, we had to go to a "mandatory" meeting. In the end it was the offer to provide you with a mentor, for the bargain price of $400....
For someone like me is who less than keen on being "coached" that investment is not necessary. Man, I really hate being coached. On anything. Even though sometimes it is necessary. That of course brings a problem for me as an editor, because sometimes I need to dish out some hard advice. When you have a bunch of people working for free though, that can be a complicated area. That's not what this story is about though. Maybe that should be edited out....
Anyway, I went to sign this contract, I was actually heading to the office of the magazine, but got the email that the contract was ready. I was in the metro, so I just crossed sides and went in the opposite direction. So quite a few million pesos will be coming my way in the fairly short term future. That is good. I encountered quite a few small protests and strikes. There is an election on the weekend, so everyone is pushing for an increase before the change of government.
Let's skip to the footbag part of the story now. I went out to La Florida, where I was once again judge of an "English song festival". Aside from my judging duties, I was also slated to open the show with a footbag demonstration. It was a mix of trying to get the kids to talk in English, as well as presenting footbag, one of my favourite ones for this, which is quite simple - is to get them to count, say up to 20, while I am kicking.
I had a few drops in the presentation today, but they didn't really care. I got a few cheers. Oh, first off I saw some of the guys I was doing regular classes with. I haven't been doing that lately, as the schedule hasn't worked properly. But a couple of them came and started kicking. One did around the world, the next clipper.
Later in the show there was a power cut, which dragged on for a long time. It was for a few blocks of the area, which is kind of funny because the municipality, where the event was, should be "in control". Anyway, to keep people with something to watch, I did some more demonstrations and had some kids get up on stage and play. So that was kind of fun.
At the end of the event, which went on for a long time without the power cuts, the mayor came out and joined an Elvis impersonator for a song, then launched into his own version of The Beatles. The winner of the competition also got a trip to New York, which is pretty amazing.
After finishing up there, I went over to meet with Francisca, who had been having her wisdom tooth out. So it was a pretty long day. I have also been reading a book called "Shooting Balibo" about the crew of Australian journalists called the "Balibo Five" in East Timor. This is a really interesting book, very well written. I really like when I get right into a book and smash through it in a couple of days. That is definitely happening with this book.

Hello blog. Haven't been writing in here too much, haven't really had the time. I haven't been playing as much as last month either. Nor playing that well. But today I had a good session. Flip twirl and I hit spinning swirl for the first time.
We went for a BBQ with some friends the other day. I had quite a good session by the pool there. I was working on the combo twirl>swirl>whirl, simply because each trick rhymes. It was the first time I had ever really hit anything worthwhile out of twirl.
Anyway, spinning swirl, that's something I've been trying for ages, and always been "that close". I hadn't really been trying it in a while, but today I came back to it and just did it without mucking around.
Something caught my eye on the Facebook group. One bloke posted about some "crazy trick ideas" and some said not going to happen, some maybe, some made some good points about other parts of footbag.

In terms of the prize money, I guess it depends on the person, but I'm not sure for everyone it is something that matters greatly. Obviously the best thing is to be the best. Then when you're the best it's good to be rewarded. The first question is, will small amounts of prize money, say $50-$100 get people travelling (paying say, $2,000). Maybe if there's at least $1,000 on the line, people will want to go for the prize money.
The next question is where to pluck that money from. Of course the simple thing to say is get the sponsors in. For all of the above reasons, and particularly a lack of publicity, there is not a huge return on investment for the sponsors.
I was just having a bit of a chat with Asmus. The DFO looks like a great tournament, and I would still really like to go. In reality I don't think it's the right time..or actually it probably is, but the right time to book it was some time back. We also have the World Waterski Championships here in Chile, so that could be good to check out. That's the thing for my project, it's not going to be just about footbag, or just about minority sports that nobody knows about, but it's about filling some key gaps that are present in all sports.

I put a short comment on the thread in regards to this one, and the main idea is that these sort of things don't really need huge investments of money. They need huge investments of time, without a doubt. And that's the key (I don't know if he purposefully said that in the way of investment, but the fact is not all investments are financial ones). As I said in my facebook comment, the time when the heavy investment is needed is if one of these things are successful. Then if it is worthwhile, someone should be coming to back it and they cover the costs of mass production.Another aspect which hasn't been mentioned that would bump up the technical level would be huge advancements in equipment. This includes incredibly durable and lightweight shoes with perfectly optimal surfaces and amazing traction on all flooring. Also if footbag were to become a cash cow an ideal type of specific flooring would be invented. Think tennis court x 10. Endless improvements would be made to footbags as well. Rechargeable glow footbags with flexible exterior solar panels? Bioluminescent footbags?? Magnetic filler that interacts with your shoe??? Algorithms that determine the perfect bag specs for your height, weight and body type? Anything would be possible with investment.

I don't know if I really agree with this part. Aside from the words in bold. There is also no flow from doing ten kicks up until being the world champion. The flow of information is not very smooth. If you are outside "the scene", it is very hard to find out anything that's happening in the footbag world.I think public perception plays a bigger role in the popularization or acceptance of a sport than we realize. When skateboarding blew up it was something that already had a history and was already woven into the underground fabric of many countries. This was at a time when the general public was both curious and open-minded to such a thing. With gymnastics - you have all these national organizations and a public that recognizes and appreciates the athleticism. Footbag has to be looked at differently than other recently popularized sports in my opinion.
There is not one fatal flaw that holds it back but many small problems that quickly add up and stunt progress. Just a few include: past stigmas and stereotypes, an abstract object being the focus rather than the body (everyone can relate with having a body but not everyone has held a beanbag before, making it hard to connect), moves are too fast and complex for people to understand/appreciate, poor organization at the grassroots level, small dark coloured bags, foreign body movements the public doesn't recognize, etc etc. To change public perception on a large scale would take a decade or more, and that's only with mass marketing campaigns with big corporate sponsorships. Unfortunately not terribly likely. Also, the lure of prize money would have to come back in a big way. It is possible, but the world at this point has no reason to be compelled to care about footbag.

I decided to put it on my Sport/Life site for a simple reason - I need to be putting more content there, and I need more people coming to visit (despite the fact that the crowdfunding part of things is not ready yet). I was originally planning to put it on Shred Global, to continue with my series, but the site appears to be down.

So I have decided not to go to Denmark. Mainly because I don't have the money yet (should probably get it today, but it's not there for me to spend yet), and moreso, because I don't want to spend two days each way on flying there. Anyway, there are a lot of great events coming up here that I should stick around for.
Today I am probably going to head out to the waterskiing, then tonight there is a surf film festival and I have got an invite to the inauguration of that. The next day El Grafico, which is a sports newspaper, are doing an awards night for the soccer. I went to this two years ago in a famous (I think I have written about it, it was more disastrous) "baptism of fire" to my "sports journalist" "career". Anyway, I am now armed with a lot more knowledge so that should be fun. It's also on at night rather than day, so that should mean it is a cocktail...
Chile have also announced that they will play Costa Rica on January 22. They haven't said where it is yet, but I'm planning on doing some kind of footbag event. My tip is for the newly rebuilt "Don Elías Figueroa" stadium in Valparaíso. Lots of sports in January - Dakar Rally, Trans Andes Challenge mountain bike. In reality there's lots of sports in Chile all the time, but nobody has any idea it's happening and my goal is to try and change that with my project.

Went to the World Water Ski Championships today. Was an interesting experience, particularly when comparing it to footbag. While they have a lot (a lot a lot a lot) more participants in the world, millions of them, there weren't too many spectators or anything there today.

It's pretty late so I'll talk about this another time. Heading there again tomorrow. A few bits of positive news and plenty of potential as well.

I have many things to write about, but the first thing I want to say is that I have 10 million pesos in my bank account. milonario. Maybe I will have to change my chosen team to milos in Colombia. No, I have my team and I'll stick with them. They're on a downhill trajectory though. Since I got on board when the bandwagon was at full steam, that's the only way to go.
Let's talk about footbag first. I have been doing the links in this competition. I have them both on video from my phone. I will probably do a little video toward the end of the month. This will be long after I can't do the challenges anymore. I guess these first challenges are perfect, because, if you're a player like me and you look at them and think - hey, no problem. I can do both those tricks. But maybe you've never linked them before. Maybe one's on the wrong side. Whatever excuse, in a real request contest I would be long gone.
But I have got each of the combos, after a long, long time. Much longer than I expected. Today's combo I was really hoping to hit first try. Though I don't do double pickup regularly (maybe I should if I want to get this combo). I got it in the end though.
So I featured briefly in the online competition. I actually filmed a bunch of stuff, but it was pretty low quality. I ended up trying to film on the last day and got the weird one that I had done earlier (atomic cloud kicking whirl). It didn't go great in the competition, but not so bad either. Somewhere around the middle of the road. The problem for me was I could never get a good set of 10 tricks I was happy to submit. Also, I hate when people call me Danny Boyle. Also also, I just read the "technical scores", which put me in third place, and that's pretty good.

Asmus mentioned in his writeup that he is excited for Caroline's fotobag project. I have mentioned this in my blog, and like I said back then, I will let her tell it, and I am looking forward to hearing the exact details myself. In reality though, I think our own projects can intertwine and that can be something good for footbag.
As I just posted on the video section, I just watched the video from Andrey Dyakonov. This guy can play...What I was more impressed by though, was that the song is from a band called "Jerk". These guys played in the "Bega Day Out", which was the, THE big event in my little town of Bega, well probably ever. They played early in the day and were not happy about that, but I watched them quite a few times over the years.
Anyway, the fact that they are long broken up and that now I hear that song, which I haven't heard in years, in a Russian footbag video, that I'm watching from Chile. Well, my project needs to be "global and scalable". I don't think the global part is a problem...
I spent two days this past week at the water ski world championships. Both Chile and Australia picked up a gold (Men's Overall and Women's Jump). Well anyway, my battery is starting to run low. My belief is that in this competition they sacrificed the fan experience and the possibility of gaining new spectators for the competitor experience, which was probably as close to perfect as you can get (since it's a lake designed just for water ski competitions). This is a sport with a much bigger base than ours, but they, like many others, are facing many similar difficulties.
Also, some of these trick water ski people shouldn't be too bad with the footbag.

So many things to talk about lately, but haven't managed to collate my thoughts on something coherent. I have way too much happening at the same time, and I'm waiting to hear back on a couple of things. All the pieces of the puzzle, sometimes they feel like they are about together, sometimes like they will be thrown to the floor by someone that doesn't like this game anymore.
Speaking of this game of kicking the little ball, I haven't had so much success on the challenges. The one that was rev swirling toe to something I couldn't do, and I couldn't manage today's, which was far swirl>pdx drifter. Both of those tricks I hit on the first go when I was trying them individually, but that was that in terms of the combo. It was a nice quick lunchtime session though, had a lot of runs of 20-30 guiltless contacts.
The Danish Footbag Open looked super, super cool. I am about to talk to Caroline, so I should hear some more about it. That's been about as close, aside from reading the blogs on here, that I've been to footbag action lately. I got the review of Worlds, the German Champs and soon to be the DFO.
I saw a comment on her Facebook that was something like "how does she get time to go everywhere". It's quite simple - she puts footbag as number 1 priority. There are probably very few of us who are doing that, and there needs to be more if the game is to do any growing. Evan Lovely is going to be in Santiago this weekend. I have offered him to stay at our place. I think he is in the Peruvian jungle or something, but it would cool to meet up or even better to have a kick. I haven't completed my thoughts about the water ski championships. I haven't really thought too much about that.

The thing with this competition is there was practically zero publicity, just like footbag, although within the waterski community they had a live stream and there was a bit of news coverage. They didn't go crazy though with the Chilean world champ. He's not going to get to meet the president or anything like that, it doesn't seem.
I had a feeling (and said on Facebook) that I thought it was the first time a Chilean had won a World Championship in Chile. I was telling that to a friend and he said "you told me that Chile won the World Roller Hockey Championship in 2006", which they did. There was also a female boxer Carolina Rodriguez "La Crespa" who won a World Title this year. A key to my project is going to be getting people to know these kind of facts. No one is going to fund somebody that they think is a nobody, a world champ on the other hand...
Speaking of this game of kicking the little ball, I haven't had so much success on the challenges. The one that was rev swirling toe to something I couldn't do, and I couldn't manage today's, which was far swirl>pdx drifter. Both of those tricks I hit on the first go when I was trying them individually, but that was that in terms of the combo. It was a nice quick lunchtime session though, had a lot of runs of 20-30 guiltless contacts.
The Danish Footbag Open looked super, super cool. I am about to talk to Caroline, so I should hear some more about it. That's been about as close, aside from reading the blogs on here, that I've been to footbag action lately. I got the review of Worlds, the German Champs and soon to be the DFO.
I saw a comment on her Facebook that was something like "how does she get time to go everywhere". It's quite simple - she puts footbag as number 1 priority. There are probably very few of us who are doing that, and there needs to be more if the game is to do any growing. Have made some progression since the last post. Have been in contact with a few people I had been planning on getting in touch with.
So, still many things to work out, but there are some plans in the works to do a serious tour in Europe, probably around April.
Jay Boychuk is probably going to get involved in the project, all the more so if he goes back to Europe on the flight he has back there in the pretty near future.
Chile are playing with Australia in the World Cup. I wasn't hugely planning on going to Brazil, but that has really got me thinking...
I talked a little on Facebook to Asmus and Flavio. These are guys I want involved in the project too, particularly on the European side of things.
I hit today's combo. It took me a lot of tries, but I hit it a couple of times, so that was pretty good. Did some ok runs also. Was playing in the shade on grass in a park. Nothing particularly great, but that down double down>rev swirl I don't think is a combo I've hit before.
Going to have Evan Lovely stay on Sunday, probably for a couple of nights. Will be good to have a kick with somebody else, has been a long, long, long time since having a serious shred session.

Today's challenge is inspinning osis>blurriest. That's a pretty interesting combo. Going to try it out. The last couple I couldn't hit. Yesterday I went to this event with the "Manchester United Soccer Schools". I was playing some footbag there, and was doing some good runs. Some people from the TV filmed me, but I don't think that made it onto the news. Anyway, these guys had been filming me on their phones, so I got one to film on mine, as I will probably never see the footage from that one. I did this long, long run (of course there were a few bails and even kicks along the way, but I was in control), I even did a scorpions tail late in the string. When reviewing the footage, there was nothing to see. All I had was a video of me picking up the bag after I had dropped it!

Hello blog. For the first time in a long time I can say "the other day I played, and someone else was wearing Lavers". Well, they were my Lavers, but Evan Lovely had paid a visit to Chile. We had quite a good afternoon/evening actually. The session was quite good, we probably played for just over an hour.
Evan said he is not playing so much anymore, but he had a few good tricks up his sleeve, including vortex bsos and a lot of pendulous tricks, including stripwalk (pendulous ripwalk), which he told me he invented. He probably did, but I don't want any historians giving me grief on this blog because it was actually something else. There was a combo he really wanted to get, which he did eventually, which I can't remember what it was now - he got a few things on film on his iphone, with slowmo etc. Most of the time we filmed anything though, the bag remained mainly on the ground.
For me, the biggest highlights were hitting sailing butterfly, which is the first time I have hit that set, and 9 reverse swirls. I can't remember if that equals or breaks my record. It was a good session though. Afterwards, Jessica, who is Evan's fiance had seen some of the video and said "hey, you're pretty good" and then I said "I'm the best in Chile..."
It is hard to gloat about that, but something that I do wonder is would I make it into a list of "top 10 players in the Southern Hemisphere". This would be an all time list, and I think I may scrape into the list for longevity and the trans-continental list. Obviously guys like Phil Morrison, Lynton, Dan Ednie, Johnny Murphy, Adrian Dick, Jeremy, these kind of guys would take the top positions. You could even throw the old mate who did "Wallaby G footbags" into the mix for historic value. Then you have the guys from Colombia and Venezuela, which maybe you wouldn't even call the Southern Hemisphere, but we can do it for this exercise. Brayan Stiven and David Castillo are definitely better players than me and there are probably plenty more.
You know what, the more I think about it, the less I think I would be in this hypothetical top ten. Definitely in a current top ten, mainly because there are not so many others playing, but despite being to very few tournaments, the results speak well for themselves, 2nd or 3rd in practically everything at the South American Championships (2012), mainly second in Australia (2011), with a victory in Shred 30 (only just and mainly because the main contenders weren't in it).
Anyway, that's enough rambling on that topic. I forgot to mention, it wasn't just good to have a shred, afterwards we walked up the Cerro San Cristobal, which is just over the road(s) from my place. You actually have to cross four very busy roads before getting to the hill, and Evan said that's how they'll remember hiking in Chile. They had just been on the Inca Trail, so this was not going to be anything in comparison.
Anyway, we didn't go right to the top, but we did see a good sunset, then we went down to this pub which for some reason was having free food and drink, which is exactly the sort of promotion that I go in for. So that was a pretty fun night, but I event went to bed last night, which was the next day, still with a deep hangover and woke up feeling pretty rough.
Played for a short while today, as I was playing there was a combo I decided I wanted to hit, which was parkwalk>stepping swirl, which I did, so that was good.

So I made a video playing in a Socceroos shirt. It was a fun little project to do.
Tomorrow I am probably going to go watch bloke set off to row the Pacific. He is going to row from Con Con to Brisbane. That's something. After the photos we also went to watch the Copa Providencia, which is a women's tennis competition. It is probably the biggest in Chile. There was barely anybody there, as is the norm in Chile. Somehow I want to change that with my project, but it is such a huge change to make, so if I can even do the 1%, that would be a start.

1. Phil. I think he clearly achieved the highest skill of any oceanic player, and if you want to add tournament results to the resume he made Finals at Worlds a few years, which only solidifies his top position.

2. Johnny Murphy. Does Johnny have any real competition for the #2 spot? He may have had more raw ability than Phil even, but I didn't play with him as much, and he had fewer tourney appearances. Still, ability wise at his peak, I think only Phil beats him. Does anybody have that video with Phil and Johnny from one of the old xmas calendars? That was sick.

3. Lynton Stephens. Dude had some bad timing with his career, in that he played before filming was as accessible as it is now. Also hurt historically by being a player in Australia in the pre-internet era, without anybody to play with. The US scene was barely aware of him, even though he was hitting tricks they could not hit yet. But he makes my list for being a pioneer of the sport in Australia, and also for hiting some insane tricks, which were really ahead of his time. I don't know how consistent he was at his peak, or how he competed, but I think the list would be incomplete without him.
4. Dan Ednie. Great ambassador to the sport, and also multiple Aus champion if I'm not mistaken? Also upset Jorden to make routine Finals at Worlds 2007. No slouch in terms of big tricks either, and had very good consistency even as far back as 2004.
5. Liam Johnston. Do people even remember this guy? He'd make my list just for the sheer control and lightness of his game. I saw him hit some huge tricks in person with amazing control (blurriest swirl, fs legbeater swirl, etc.) but really it was just mesmerizing watching him be so light on his feet.
