Ian, My barn warming party is Saturday night, Kaiser will actually be there. Any possibility you would be able to make it?

---

played last night for 25 minutes. Forced myself to stop there, and forced myself to again take it very very easy - although I did push a little more than previous night. Foot is more sore today, but bearable. Will take the next several days off while we have friends in town for the barn party. Hopefully I will be able to ramp up the energy on shredding next week, I'm so sick of this.

Hey Bob,

We should talk. I am interested, but I don't believe I would have a way to get there.

ugh, so tired out.

thursday night, best buddy arrives in town, I pick him up at the train station after work. we play with the kids, hang with megan, party late night (to give you an idea, he ended up falling asleep on the barn floor).

therefore, friday morning, we're all in rough shape. i have the day off, so meg wants me to take keegan to preschool. later, we go out and about with the kids, watch phillies game. then, avett brothers concert at the electric factory in philly. what a good concert. in my top 5 concerts all time, and that's saying something as I've been to a shit ton of shows. once again, get home late night.

saturday, spend all day playing with the kids and getting ready for the barn party. another out of town friend comes in during the day too. barn party all night with lots of good friends, hot grog, cold beer, darts (you should see the final throws of the night by me.. amazing.. seriously), food, tunes. fun time.

sunday, wife and i recovering all day, just playing with the kids and watching various philly teams play.

and, in footbag news, my foot is feeling very close to normal. going to try to work off some of those weekend calories with some footbag tonight.

Yo Bob!

I apologize I couldn't make the barn-warming party, wouldn't have had a ride out there anyway :cry: but I am sure it was a blast!

Good to see your foot is coming back to it's old self, what exactly was causing the pain? A couple months ago I had a random pain behind two of my toes whenever I put pressure on them, causing me too to take a little break from activities too.

I will be around Saturday for a friends' wedding in town, if you're free in the evening and your foot is in shape, want to shred?

happy days!

hey drew, saturday evening shred sounds good, say around 7:30 or 8 p.m. let me know

--
played last night with brian. feels so good just to type that I "played". I put in about 65% effort and did not feel major soreness last night, and also am nearly pain free this morning. YAY. I was way less rusty than I thought I'd be for the most part. Going to try again tonight, solo session.

In the end, I think I injured the foot practicing pixie ss DLO which was a new trick for me as of a few weeks ago. That's my weakside pixie, so I was slamming my foot down repeatedly during the set, and then again while catching the DLO. It was just a bruise, but man did it freaking hurt.

fell asleep with 3 outs to go in the Phillies amazing comeback win last night.

=====

played again last night. probably closer to 75% effort last night, and still relatively no pain in the foot. a little sore today, luckily it's "Phillies spirit day" at work so I am cushioning my footb by wearing sneakers with my jeans and phillies colors.

did a bunch of rip walks, lots of spins, pixie stuff, ducking and diving, some drifters and whirls, some DLO's. stayed away from anything bigger, no paradons (the footwork hurts), no blurs, no atomic, no eggbeaters.

some strings. tonight, off. phillies game, hoping to clinch and go to the world series for 2nd straight year.

======
10/22/09
you know, it's real nice not having to do so much work right now. last night, just lifted weight a little while the pregame was on, hung out with the wife and played darts and watched the phils whup the dodgers (going to the world series baby!), and hit the hay.

kicking tonight, foot feels good right now, fingers crossed i can increase the intensity

======
10/23/09
the weight yo yo is back on the decline. shit, i was really getting there and then got injured. oh well, you can't stress too much in life. in any case, it's headed in the right direction again.

played last night for 30 minutes. played a little harder, but not much harder. maybe 80-85%. I think that's as much as I can push it right now, I'll have to play at this level for a little. It's ok, there's still plenty to work on without being able to go full speed.

Nothing interesting to report.

you know you've gotten something out of footbag when you can have a barn warming party, and when you're looking at pictures later, you see one of a room full of friends, and you don't even realize they're footbag related friends. ya know?

ken - yes, get together would be good. since you'd be the one travelling let me know some good weekends and I'll see which one fits.

ian - definitely glad you could make it, jess is cool as hell. I'll let you know my trip times for Christmas soon, I for sure want to get together with you to shred etc. Also, I'll be making a solo trip down at some point to pick up some things from my dad (he got me some more cool/sentimental workshop stuff from my granpa's collection, but it's too large to try to get home while packed with kids and luggage etc. so I'll take my truck down for a night) so I'll keep you posted on that too. I would possibly want to crash in the city rather than drive back to my folk's place, but I'm not sure.

shredded with brian on saturday. I played about 80% (and also mowed 3 lawns, raked leaves, cleaned the house) and my foot is still pain free. YAY. I had a couple runs that were close to 100%-ish and haven't really lost much in my time off. Missing annoyingly easy transition tricks, but otherwise, feel very deliberate and controlled and smooth. Play tonight, Pearl Jam concert at the Spectrum tomorrow night, more play and then Phillies in the World Series on Wednesday!!! Shaping up to be a great week!

===========
10-27-09
shredded last night. I was nearly 100% effort on stuff that I was playing, but I limited myself to only play about 80% of my game if that makes any sense. But I was able to really string and go hard at it without pain. Watched some MNF (Eagles/Redskins) while lifting afterwards, hit the hay early.

Because, Pearl Jam tonight with Meg! Fun date night. And then Phillies games the next two nights! Going to be wiped out by the time the weekend arrives. But it's worth it, what a fun week.

============
10-30-09
no pain last night, played without limitation, although i'm still shaking off rust and getting back into shape so i couldn't do everything i wanted to, but it wasn't my foot that caused the problems. lifted after and watched phillies (rough loss last night).

=============
11/02/09
looks like the phillies are done for, things just aren't bouncing their way and they're down 3-1 after last night's heart breaker. too bad, we'll see if they can get another win for pride's sake.

shredded with brian friday night. i think my foot is officially healed as i played hard and shredded pretty darn well. hit a nice blurriest on command, hit some pixie DLO's, barfly, midrun atomic mirage on strong side, weakside atomic ss mirage to start a run, both stepping sets, both spins (if there's one benefit to the injury, it's that it seems to have allowed me to get my weakside spin up to speed), etc. etc.

Just going to focus on fitness levels and solo shred for a bit and see where it takes me.

=================
11-3-09
well, the Phils had a pride game last night. Utley is playing out of his mind, tied Reggie "mr. october" Jackson for most homeruns in world series history. That's a big stat. Never say die, but game 6 will be tough to win considering the pitching matchup is not in our favor. We'll see.

did a more formal footbag practice last night. I need to be careful to not be too drill oriented because I tend to forget how to shred when I get like that. But, it's still nice to have a list of stuff to work on. Was really gassed by the end of practice, foot feels great. then lifted, i'm getting stronger pretty quickly right now.

===================
11-4-09
btw, this saturday is my one year anniversary of quitting smoking. Not sure if I mentioned that earlier or not. Go me. fuck it. If they came out with a healthy cigarette, I'd start again tomorrow. heh.

played last night, it feels so good to be back working hard. right now, my practice goes like this:

Night 1:
warmups (basic drills, tiltless, bops etc.)
work on individual foundation tricks, not sets really

Night 2:
same warmups as above
work on concepts such as sets, spins, ducks dives.. mostly in the form of working them into a short run to mimic real shredding

Night 3:
shorter warmups
just play whatever i want to play, shred

repeat to night 1 etc. Of course, actual shred sessions with other players happen here and there as well.

last night was a night 2 night. lots of stepping and pixie last night.

then lifted. bed early.

world series game 6 tonight.. must win to continue to play. go Phils. Big freaking meeting at work at 8 a.m. tomorrow, so I can't watch the entire game most likely, I can't be tired for the meeting. Damn it.

Poor Phillies, lost to the evil empire. It was a fun run though. What a 2 year stretch it's been for PA sports.

Shredded last night. It was just shred night, no drills really. I just try to shred stuff that I want as bread and butter automatic combos, and stuff that's totally foreign to me. It's been a pretty effective approach. Nothing drives me more nuts than missing a far butterfly in the middle of a good run. And stuff like that. 2nd pet peeve is if every run is the same. Hence the approach I take.

I know I've said I want atomic for a long time now. Right before my recent injury, it was finally getting there. And last night was the first night I let myself try it since getting hurt. Really positive results overall. I was able to hit weakside tap and strongside atomic mirage midrun in the same run several times. Those are my two strongest atomic tricks on either side, so I'll be happy to just get them solid, then I can branch out.

Otherwise, lifted and hit the hay early. Weight is falling off me again now that I'm back in the swing.

Hey Bob,

Jess and I had a great time. She was glad that she came. Perhaps the best thing about it was that it was a group of friends with real history have a great time in an exciting environment, and not just a bunch of dudes playing hacky-sack.

You always have the option to crash at my place when your in the area, and I might even have to arm wrestle Matt Beall over the privilage.

Looking forwardto catching up with you again sometime soon.

Hey Ian :-) I'll keep you posted on Christmas trip dates/times. I'll have the whole fam with me on that trip so will be crashing at my folk's place. But in the spring, I'll have a solo trip to get some tools and help my dad with a few things. On that trip crashing with you in the city would be fun. I'll probably plan on warm weather visit to make it all more enjoyable.

---

kicked friday night and sunday afternoon. freaking world series kicked my ass, I think I'm just now feeling back to normal again. I was so tired for both sessions. But, got out there and played, so that's good.

Funny thing.. during sunday's session I decided to take some footage. bad idea. Feeling/looking too overweight still, so it was depressing to watch. I was wiped out as I mentioned, so I sucked ass while playing. And, somehow I got pause and record mixed up and ended up pausing during my runs and recording during my breaks! ha ha, oh well, I really only missed recording shitty run after shitty run, so it's for the best.

Phillies lost to the evil empire. Hahaha, truer words were never spoken. It honsetly has really diminished my desire to watch the sport over the last few years.

So when are you coming around, brother? I have Thanksgiving day off and nothing else and Christmas day off and nothing else. Haha, but I can definitely make it out to shred at some point around either holiday.

yo matt!
yeah, the rich get richer syndrome in MLB definitely hurts the game in my opinion. It should be about team chemistry, the farm system etc. That's more fun and develops fan loyalty.

We'll be up your way the day after Christmas for about 3-4 days. My folks have a good garage for shredding, and afterwards we play pool in the adjacent rec room area while having some suds. Good stuff. You will be there.

started warming up last night and realized I was just too tired and shitty of a mood to even make it worth playing. Stopped. Need to break this funk. Losing weight/shredding better.. chicken and the egg

well, i'm glad i took monday night off because my session last night was much better as a result. i also realized that my music selection affects my mood more than i though.. i was listening to ipod on shuffle and never found a groove. so last night i just picked a single album and let it play through. much better. anyways, nothing crazy good about last night's practice, just played well overall and got a great workout.

after, lifted. increased the weight on my dumbells, and increased the number of pushups in each set. doing well on all other aspects of my health routine too.

probably build stuff in the barn tonight instead of playing

----------
11/12/09
what the hell day is it? let's see.. the above entry was written on wednesday i think.. so i didn't plan on playing wednesday night i think? well, whatever, i played last night anyways. i'm glad i did. it was an off night from lifting so i could just take my time. last night i picked whirl, paradon, atomic, spins as the components i wanted to work into runs. did a nice job of all of them.

with whirl and paradon, i'm mostly concentrating on playing into and out of those tricks with something more interesting than bops. and that's coming along nicely. like whirl > drifter and stuff like that, or dlo > paradon > spinning clip.. etc. even got a midrun ripwalk > pdx DLO > paradon > whirl > drifter once. that's pretty cool i guess (although that particular combo is entirely strong side.. so a teense cheater)

with spins, i'm mostly focusing on doing weakside spinning clipper out of a variety of stuff so it feels more comfortable. and then i try to go into pdx mirage after every one because i feel that takes more control than far butterfly or osis or even ducking clip etc. this went well too.

with atomic, i just don't want to do it as a run starter, so during my run I set myself up for an easy toe delay, either through pdx mirage, or pixie op legover usually, so that i can get a good balanced set. i'm actually really happy with my success rate compared to the last 10 years worth of futility... which perhaps isn't saying much. shrug. fuck you atomic.

----------------
11-13-09
short session last night, probably 20 minutes or so. I knew my legs were shot from last two nights, and that I wanted to play tonight, so I took it easy.

I like the practice approach I stumbled upon, and I plan to expand it. Basically, I pick 2-3 individual moves that are difficult for me on at least one side, or that I can hit nicely but have difficulty linking, and I pick 1-2 concepts (either one of the sets or duck/dive or spins etc.). And I just build runs over and over again trying to get all the moves and the concepts into each string. It's very random which moves and concepts will make it into each string, but that keeps it fun. And I really concentrate on trying for links that are new to me, but would be useful in my game. It's a fun approach.

Last night, for example, I picked dives and stepping set as the concepts. And the individual tricks were DLO (b/c my weakside is horrible) and dyno (both are unreliable, but weakside especially so). My runs included all the stuff that I do, but had an emphasis on these items. It allows me to drill and freestyle all at once (which I find is important.. I HATE HATE HATE the style of play [one that is more and more prominent these days as people get "good" at "freestyle" by being robots] that just looks like someone doing bsos drills all day... yawn!)

Regarding bsos robots: You should see Matt's game these days.
Holy cow- it seems like the guy tries to see how hard he can push himself, and then just wills himself to hit it on the other side out of principle. Friday he hit bladerunner b2b.

I have noticed a personal trend that I rarely ever freestyle unless I am kicking with someone new, am at an event or out of town, or after I have successfully warmed up and completed a shed-ton of drills already. My strings are way longer when I freestyle, but I feel there has to be a give and take.

Regarding your approach at isolating moves, I swear by it. It really identifies your strengths and weakness, and it has helped out considerably in the last few months.

And, finally, regarding ten years of... not starting out a string... out of something easy like pm.. yeah- fuck atomic! :)

wassup brill!

well, what a pain in the ass couple of weeks I've had. Let's recap..

- built a barn so i could woodwork and shred in there.
- finally finished the fucking stupid barn... only to have hamstrings in tatters.
- hamstring improved, then played hard, was really getting into it.. bruised foot.
- bruised foot finally healed... tweaked lower back..
- lower back mostly healed... had to get a mole removed on my leg, right where shorts hit while playing, so a couple more days off to allow stitches to heal.

but, friday night and saturday night, i got out there and played again finally. and i'm taking it slow to avoid any further setbacks.

friday night concepts worked = spinning legover, pixie ss mirage, diving clipper, forget what the 4th one was.

saturday, I did a whole session of bops basically. if it's good enough for crowley, it's good enough for me.

actually, my bops mixes with my tilts and kicks now in a fun way. it's just sort of non stop hacky sacking / bopping / little bit of freestyling.. nothing fancy, but it's a fun way to play. So, whatever, I'll go with it.

heh heh, no shame here, glad to be shredding no matter what the tricks are :-)

--
working on a project right now that I think will be really fun.

I went through the footbag.org list of tricks and concepts and entered every thing I do or want to be able to to do (and have a reasonable shot at being able to achieve) into a spreadsheet. That ended up being 140 rows worth of information.

Now, I'm going through and categorizing items depending on how often I use them in reality. Already, I've noticed I can add so much variety to my game just by doing stuff I already know how to do.

Analysis and practice schedule to follow later on.

edit: yeah, it's slow here at work due to Thanksgiving holiday. But I've wanted to do this for awhile anyways.

Wow, so my analysis has pointed out that my game sucks ass. I think I knew that, but now I REALLY know it.

- 140 items in my list of things I can already do, should be able to do, or really wish to be able to do and it’s somewhat possible for me
o 1 add tricks - 5
o 2 add tricks - 15
o 3 add tricks – 36
o 4 add tricks – 47
o 5 add tricks – 15
o 6 add tricks – 2
o Flying tricks – 6
o Other/sets/unusual – 14

- I don’t use all these equally
o 14 tricks are very common, nearly every run
o 8 more tricks are used frequently
o 24 more tricks are used a few times per session
o 94 tricks almost never make an appearance

- And I probably don’t use them all because I’m not as equally skilled on each of them
o 7 tricks are never miss on both sides
o 7 more tricks are never miss on one side or the other, but could be a little better on weakside
o 6 tricks are 90% there strong, but only 75% there on weakside
o 12 tricks are about 75% on both sides
o 76 tricks are 30% but should be way better
o 32 tricks would be brand new to me

- Therefore, my goal is to take tricks from each category and move them up the pile. So a “never hit trickâ€

I really love the analysis you made. A guy like Ianek did lots of things like that and in a long run that paid.

I also love you goal; not to make everything perfect tomorow, but to raise a little bit everything. In a long run you game will be way better!

I believe i should do that too!

Good luck!
