Oh well I didn't play on Saturday due to my concussion. I had headaches lasting literally all of last week, although I smashed a pack of neurofen plus, so the dr thought I should have a few weeks off (and a brain scan if they continued this week, which they didn't).

We got humiliated anyway. It was probably the worst sporting performance I've ever witnessed. It's resulted in me working a little harder so that our team never gets beaten like that in a game I'm playing in.

We lost 38 goals 18 behinds; 246 to 0 goals 1 behind ; 1.

This week we have the bye and then next week I can guarantee I'll be one of the best players on the field. I don't understand how people can put up with being destroyed like that.

I wasn't aware I ever retired from footbag, I'm just not playing at the moment.

Anyway it's true, one of the team managers thought I should play in one of the higher divisions, but I'm really only playing football because I enjoy it, I don't really care about the level, and now that I've made this commitment, I'm happy to see it through. Campaina hasn't had a football team for over 10 years, so this is basically a new team, many of the players have never played before. We're not going to be able to win many games this year, but we can learn a lot.

I think playing in a team that struggles so much now will be much more rewarding when we do start winning games, so I see myself playing for at least a few years.

Yeh thats a good way to look at it, it will push you to work harder and harder each week which cant be bad thing... unless you have a nervous breakdown lol

Sorry for misjudging your footbag hiatus.

Maybe you should approach the other teams and propose that they have to use their flipside foot to kick with. Maybe that way youse have a fighting chance.

You know what? I'm really fucking sick of losing. I'm sure many of you know how competitive I am, how I'm not at all happy unless I'm winning. Well can you imagine how humiliated I am seeing results in the paper like that last one. It makes me sick. Then on Thursday we get to training and everybody is pussyfooting around, too weak and too stupid to make an effort to improve. This may sound like a drunken 3am rant, and maybe it is, but tomorrow and all this week I'm getting up and I'm working hard and next Saturday I'm going to work so fucking hard, we're at least going to be competitive and not embarrassing.

Don't my team-mates have any pride? How can they not care, when people laugh at the score-line?

This isn't the time for standing back and complaining about how bad we are, this is time for showing some gumption, some fucking leadership, and giving an example of how hard we should be fucking trying. If we try our hardest and lose, at least we gave it our best effort. If we get smashed by 250 points again, that's not our hardest, that's a soft cock school kid effort.

If I learned anything from footbag, it's that if you want something done, don't rely on other people to do it, do it yourself or shut-up. Well that's what I'm going to do. Being good isn't good enough.

Yeah well it was another big loss. 37 to 143 in the end I think. Kester and I both got in the best, which is good, since we got some money for our pool, and I managed to play the whole game, despite apparently breaking some ribs at the beginning of the third quarter. If I had have known that they were broken I probably wouldn't have kept playing. Pretty fucking sore now, it hurts to breath or move, so I'm trying my best not to do either of them.

It was a bit of a blow though, because at half time I had had 19 disposals, and I only finished up with 32, and didn't really have an impact in the second half.

Sure I had broken ribs, but they didn't hurt enough to stop me from playing, so I don't really think that's an excuse for dropping off. In all fairness, last time we played this team we lost 30 to 231 so it was a much better effort, but we were only 2 goals away at half time, so things really blew out in the second half.

So my doctor says 6 weeks off  I might see if I can come back a little earlier than that, although avoiding a punctured lung would be a good thing :P.

She has prescribed me some panadine forte, so at least some positive has come from this ;)

Last night was pretty shit, every position I tried to sleep in hurt, but trying to roll over hurt even more. As long as I sit or stand straight and don't move at all I'm almost fine, so that's a bonus. Apparently it will be like this for a few weeks.

Bummer about the ribs. A punctured lung doesn't sound like the sort of risk you should be taking but who knows you might heal quickly and be back in under six weeks anyway.
Only two goals away at half time sounds like a good improvement.

Yeah, I think we play a lot better at home too. What do you think the worst thing that could happen while you've got broken ribs is? Well today I woke up with a cold, but I sit around choking on my flem because it hurts too much to cough.

Hey Jeremy,
bad luck with the ribs and getting a cold that sucks, it could be worse though....you could have a cold and hayfever.

I only sneezed once when I had broken ribs and I think it was more painful than when I actually broke them.

I found the pain died down alot after about 2 weeks, but I still couldn't play footbag cause it hurt to land suddenly.

Wish you a speedy recover!

Well I played my first game back from the broken ribs yesterday.

They were still pretty sore, and I struggled for fitness at training as well, so I told the coach that I was happy to play, but that I wasn't sure I'd be up for a full game.

So I started the game on the bench, and then 10 minutes it, got put on the ball, where I proceeded to play the entire game :P.

Having watched the last 3 weeks (and a bye), I've really noticed that we don't run enough and that we don't handball enough, so I set out to do both those things as much as possible. I managed to get the 2 votes for our team (second best player for us) and $40 so my plan worked, although personally I thought I could have played a lot better. I was very soft because I was worried about hurting my ribs, and I fumbled the ball under pressure a lot too. I still managed to get a lot of the ball though, and set up our second goal of the game.

We ended up losing 195 to 12; which was shit, although is a 20 point improvement over last time we played them at home .

One of the things I love so much about playing a team sport again is sledging. There just isn't anywhere near enough of it in footbag. I guess it's a cultural thing, because I remember the topic here about it, and I have to assume that sledging is mainly an Australian thing. Not that there were any remarkably funny sledges. There was a funny moment when I kicked the ball to my brother, who got a free kick for something, and then played on and stepped the person on the mark from about 30 cm away, who fell over. Kester then started laughing while running up the field with the ball. Apparently he turned around to the guy who fell over and said; "Mate you wouldn't even get on the bench on our team," which is probably not the best call for a team that loses by over 100 points most games. The guy responded by saying; "At least I have a team," which doesn't even make sense, and at that moment the runner came out and took him off the ground for the rest of the game.

I accidentally sledged somebody as well. One of the opposition players was about 50 out and about to kick to a lead when this big dopey looking guy running up about 10m behind him calls for the ball. I was right next to the dopey guy and said; "Why would he give you the ball?" Which was merely a comment on the fact that he was directly behind the person with the ball, who wasn't under pressure. He responded with something like; "I'd drop you," which is true, since he was about 100kg and 6 foot 5, and I sarcastically said; "big man," because somebody that big beating up somebody who only weighs 65 kg and is 5 foot 5 wouldn't really be an impressive act of manliness. That got him angry and he spent the rest of the quarter running after me trying to shirt front me whenever I got near the ball. Of course being a dopey fat guy, he was always 20 meters behind me anyway, so it meant he was out of position and ineffective.

Anyway, the thing about sledging is that, in Australia at least, it builds friendship, rather than animosity. After the game we all go to the home team club bar and have some beers and the people you were sledging are the people you have a chat to from the opposition.

When I think of all the most fun rivalries I've had with people in other sports, sledging as always been a part of the rivalry, but it's also always lead to us playing better, becoming friends, and having respect for each other. I think in Australian culture at least, sledging is a good thing.

Anyway I'm a bit sore from the game, just muscle stiffness. My rib was really sore at the end of the game, but today feels almost fine, so I think playing was ok. It's great to be playing again.

Also I played footbag last weekend. There was a big demonstration about a proposed pulp mill that my work organised (11,000 people turned out) and I so I got to meet up with one of the guys who used to make up the Hobart Footbag Club (the rally was at the other end of the state) and kick. I was a little rusty, but it felt good, although I don't miss having sore feet, ankles and knees after playing.

So played ok last week, got in the best again. Rebroke my rib in the first quarter, but not very badly.

A guy I went to school with died a couple of days ago. Not sure how, in fact I only found out because somebody sent me a message to say that a party this weekend was cancelled because people were going to the funeral. Pretty sucky for at least 3 different reasons.

Anyway I just made this post to share this message, because it's loltown.

"I didn't get around to writing up a decent application, i'm no good at those things.
I'm broke for a while but if your free in a month feel like teaching em to play pool? This is a big show of trust to you on this matter but that prob doesnt mean anything.

Anyway Hope your well and such, im off to watch more oz now."

From a girl I've met once. I'm late for work but will explain later.

So a very important update. Although we may have lost every football game for the season, I played a game today for the law society at uni, vs the engineering society. Although it was pissing down with rain all game, we managed to beat them by about 12 goals, which means that I've won one sporting game for the year :D. It was a tough game, I played at forward pocket and on the ball, and managed to kick 2 goals, as well as getting a fair bit of the ball. Winning felt so good, although I also suffered my worst cramping ever after the game, and am really sore now. Rib is fine though, which is good. So huzzah, winner at sport :P

Thanks. Been playing a little footbag, a few new stuff but nothing amazing. High plains drifter>big apple kicking with Brian and James on Friday was probably the highlight.

The bigger news is that I've organised a mixed touch football team this year. Almost nobody has played on the team but I think we'll go ok, should be in a low division anyway. We had our first training session and bbq today, and everybody picked up the rules pretty quickly. My goal for the season is to score 100 try's - which will be a big challenge (considering my record in 1 game is 10, and often games can be played with a combined total of less than that). If I can score 5+ every game I think I should be able to manage it, but we'll see. I will keep you posted ;) :P
