Hi Bob,

Challenges:

*Whirl-rip-repeat go for contacts
*op-set illusions (like illusions, but dexed with the set foot and landing on the opposite side). Go for a high number
*try the above trick with an additional dex (delay foot, o-i) b2b.
*Whirl-ducking clipper repeat go for contacts
*Ducking clipper- whirl- spinning clipper repeat
*stepping ss clipper-rip-repeat
*stepping ss clipper- blur-paradon-repeat
*ripx5
*ripx7
*spinning whirl- ripwalk, both sides
*tomahawk
*whirr
*Tap-smear-pixie legover repeat
*Drifter-blur bs

Pick and choose buddy. You have a better game than I do so you should be able to hit some of these tricks, even if you haven't. The links are above my level (a few of them) but I think I need to school em and I think they could open up your game. You are the man, and I hate to see you grumpy.

Happy New Year, and Best

Cool links! I've always thought that the secret to shred was french fries. Before, during, and after shred.

French fries made me fat in the first place! ha ha

Ian, I think about 50-75% of those challenges would take me about a year to hit honestly. I think you've misjudged my skill/potential skill possibly. I'll give them a try though. :-) (spinning whirl > ripwalk > repeat? when I'm asleep I hit that easily)

on top of the grumps, my barn windows are leaking. what a pissy week

Yeah, I wanted to raise the bar. I thought you might feel less grumpy if you had a few other ideas in the back of your footbag-head that were out of the box. I wanted to encourage you to try out a few concepts.

I know that your spins are better than mine and I can hit spinning whirl. I suppose the question is "how good are your ripwalks out of whirl?"

Basically, they are there in case you are bored of drilling the same-old stuff. I tried that ss illusion stuff today... holy hell is that hard for me....

Totally appreciate it Ian :-) Can't wait to shred with you again sometime soon hopefully!

Well, had a much better practice last night. Still bummed that "health month" has not yielded results as quickly as I would have hoped. We've really worked hard. But, I'm trying to look at it as though you're moving a huge boulder. The first revolution is the most difficult, and then it gains momentum.

I will say that my legs, arms, and chest are all in good shape right now. Strong. So, when the gut catches up, we should be in good shape hopefully. Just need to stay motivated.

Anyways, back to practice. I really want to shred a lot more right now. I play my best when I shred a lot (vs. drill a lot) but I always learn more new stuff and make form improvements when I'm drilling a lot. Kind of a conundrum (sp?)

Also, I've been having difficulty justifying spending much time on the "possibly hittable" and the "it's a stretch" piles of tricks lately. I think they're good to give a couple of minutes of energy to, but not much more than that.

And, the "should own" pile of tricks is really what I need to spend time on.

So, last night I:
- Did every single "warmup" trick at least once on each side.
- Hit 10 "bread and butter" tricks at least once on each side.
- Freestyled for 25 minutes with a focus on starting runs, or incorporating into the run, tricks from the "should own" pile.
- Tried 2 "hittable" tricks on both sides.
- Tried 2 "reach" tricks on both sides.
- Cool down, stretch, lift

I liked this approach because the warmups really did warm me up nicely, I got some reps in on stuff I can do really well and want to continue to be able to do really well, mostly played hacky and worked on runs but still got reps at tricks that aren't consistent yet, and still had a chance to push my boundaries a little at the end.

We'll try this for a few practices and see how it goes.

Well, good spirits were short lived.

Gained more weight despite more workouts, less calories, no drinking. So that's great. Glad I'm choosing healthy lifestyle since it helps me zero percent.

Then, Brian calls out of the blue and wants to shred last night. I had an appointment with a contractor that was running late, so I get out to the barn and Brian's been playing for 30 minutes already. Tells me he can stay another 15 minutes. So I skip stretching, skip warmups, and just try to play. Needless to say, I was horrible. Quit the sport horrible. He was, of course, the best he's ever played despite that he hasn't touched a footbag in weeks. Nice. I work hard and get worse. He skips the work and gets twice as good.

fuck it. taking a break.

yo bob I've been there. Any chance that increased weight is from the muscle you gained when lifting weights?

I'm playing like shit too with this new lacing style so give ma a weekend or two before I get back to where I wanna be, then we should shred if you're free.

days off did me good. Played the best I've ever played on Saturday. Interestingly, Brian can't tell the difference between when I play great and when I play awful, so it was a little bit of a let down. He also informed me that he doesn't listen to any of my advice ever. <shrug>

But, focusing on the positive, I played very well. One run I can remember had this in the middle of it (I can only remember a string this long because I've been wanting this string for a couple weeks):

a couple tricks > ripwalk > pdx DLO > paradon > whirl > DLO > pixie butterfly > drifter > whirl > ducking butterfly > a couple more tricks

That counts as very genuine for a guy like me.

I still can't atomic or quantum, but whatever. Plan to play tonight, wednesday, and take off until Saturday again.

lots of snow to shovel yesterday, about 15+ inches. Plus building snow forts for the kids, romping around, and building in the barn.

but today I got to play. highlights:
- midrun pixie whirl
- midrun fear
- midrun tap

big day tomorrow

edit: this is this weekend's barn building effort:

blizzard!!!!!!!!

no, really.. it's snowing like a mo fo outside.

but I have a shred barn, so I got a session in after I got out of work early, battled ridiculous road conditions home, shoveled for the 3rd time in the day (shoveled 2 times more since then.. looking forward to more of the same later on).

anyways, highlight of today was getting out there and doing it.

and ripwalk > pdx whirl. first time to hit that link.

still no word since monday's big day.

blur > paradon > ripwalk > pdx dlo to start a run.. I think that might be the hardest 4 trick combo i've ever hit. not that impressive, but i'll take it

down dble down for first time i think.. that's left clipper, right foot twice around, delay on left clip.. anyways, I don't think I've hit that before today

another midrun pdx whirl

Got a short practice in last night. I'm "stress tired" so I was just happy to get out there. I spend a lot of time on basics and bread and butter lately and I think it's been good for everything else. Brian commented the other day that I looked very balanced and controlled.

Great combos Bob, all the hard work is starting to pay off. I wanted to give you and the philly scene a heads up that my Mom will be moving to the Philly area in April so I will be taking periodic trips down to you guys. I hope that during those trips we can put together some shred sessions.

Hey drew, that's cool! I have a tough time getting away from the house (kids/wife schedules), but always welcome shredders to come out and experience the shred barn. Keep me posted.

here's a table I built out of free scrap wood today. I set it to the height of my chop saw so it also acts as a support table.

ducking butterfly > blur > toe set drifter to a run (which if you know me, is a really uncoordinated link for me)

pixie butterfly > ripwalk > whirl > drifter (where the whirl > drifter was weakside, which again is hard for me)

otherwise, just happy to play with the worst cold in the world.. sneeze.
