Question about video requirments, and how to get around them

Every once in a while, I find a video that I can't get to play on my iPod. And I was just wondering if there's an easy way of converting a video to a format supported by the video iPod.

If there is, what is it, if there isn't, what kind of crazy expensive program should I look into pirating so I can do it. (<3 LimeWire)
