A not so Lovely Predicament (No Video)

Post by TwistedTorque »

I don't know if I am going to make big internet videos anymore. I want to keep making videos, but I don't know if the Internet is the medium that works the best. I can't encode in formats that work for everyone because they don't support the quality I demand. The size ends up being almost too big for most to download. The amount of time, effort, and equipment it takes to do this right makes the few forum thread thank yous that I get seem disapointing. The logical next step is to mass produce DVDs. But, who orders DVDs? I've talked with Daryl and I have a general idea of how many of them are sold. Not Much.

How many people would order a $15 DVD (includes shipping):?:

I think i would, if i was in the us..
But you could send an order to someone in europe there could sell them to us? Like planetfootbag.. Or something..
Of course, it should have great players and some new thinking in editing and in shred..

I really enjoy watching your videos so yes, i would definitely buy one for 15 bucks.

If it is going to be a long, shred intensive video however, i always love to see a little sillyness or personality shine through. I mean, what do we really know about sunil jani or chad degvulzig? Nothing but how they shred. I'd really like to know how they feel about the game, their thoughts on life etc, and then see their shred section or whatever. i dunno, its just a thought.

I was watching an And One tape the other day, and when it was over my first impressions were: that was real fun to watch, streetball is cool, I should try that behind-the-back crossover against my students. Only later did I realize how little actual basketball content there was on the tape. But then, on subsequent re-watchings, I do fast-forward through lots of the extraneous stuff.

I guess I`m trying to say that there is definitely a balance to be struck between content and fun stuff. I agree with Mirken that it`d be nice to see some non-shred, interesting content on vids, just don`t go overboard.

As for the original topic question, I`d have to honestly say that I probably wouldn`t buy one, just cause the shipping costs to Japan would up it so much. But if I were at a tournament where you were at, I might. But even in that situation I couldn`t say I`d 100% get one.

I think maybe you're looking at this the wrong way. your method of internet distribution isn't working, so you want to scrap the internet way all together... but what if you just modify your distribution method? now, this is coming from somebody who is a) cheap and b) doesn't have a dvd player, but i would totally pay you five bucks to send me a 600 or 700 mb file over skype or one of the many other direct file transfer services. even bit torrent - say twenty kids on modified want to see your new video. it's a half hour long, maybe 350mb - if we each pay you five dollars that's 100 bucks right there, with no production costs for the DVD, then you spend twenty bucks to host the video for a few days as we all download from you (and each other through teh magic of bittorrent!).

I don't know, it just seems to me like EVERYONE has a computer, and not everyone wants to spend the cash on a DVD... more people will buy in if it's less expensive, possibly getting more profit to you (and of course, possibly not). or maybe you could destribute it on a CD for people - burning to a specific format on request and mailing that out would be WAY cheaper than making DVDs...

anyway, this is just me rambling because my DVD player doesn't work. then again, i'm sort of planning on buying a new computer, so maybe DVDs are best afterall. but take this stuff into consideration... i know i would definitely by a cheaper, lower quality/longer video but i'd think twice before shelling out for a dvd, even if it was only 15 bucks (which is a good price if you include shipping.)

I think BitTorrent is a fantastic idea. However, I don't like your suggested implentation idea. While it would work, it would a) work for only a few people (the initial people that grabbed it), and b) anyone down the line who wanted to see it would have a hard time getting it. Instead, we could set up a new section on this forum for communication about seeding files. Evan could initially host it on wherever (freedomfootbags.com, I guess) for a day or so, let people have at it, and then take it down. Later on if other people wanted to acquire it they could ask on the forum section for someone to seed the file. I think this could potentially flesh out well, but sadly, I wouldn't count on it. :(

I think selling it as a DVD is a good idea -- I know I'd buy one, anyway. Your movies are great! However, if it were on a DVD, I would like the video to be at least 45 minutes long. Otherwise, I don't see paying $15, or you wasting your time. Of course, I'm sure you're already aware of that/plan on making something longer anyway. ;)

I agree with Mirken, by the way. I think a very short personal section before a shred section is a good format.

i think selling dvd's is a great way to go, i already bought one from you at sjff and it was fantastic. even though i had already seen most of the footage online it was still worth it to me. i don't have it here with me so i can't say exactly how long it was, but i remember it being a decent length and being satisfied with it. i didn't regret my purchase at all.

I would buy a DVD for $15. It's the $25 that kills me. Anything small enough to buy completely on impulse with my most-of-the-time empty budget, I'll go for.

Wow! I didn't expect this many responses. 8O Thanks for all the input!
If I were to put out a video, I'd try to have 45-60 minutes of fresh, well edited material and an additional hour of internet released stuff in high quality (Seattle 04, CSS 5...).
I'm a big fan of high quality footage and it always looks so good on DVD.
The high quality pay per download release idea sounds interesting. Paypal definatly makes that easy.
I'm open to more ideas and I thoroughly enjoy hearing your feedback. Thanks again! :D

I think that I could not, but I would like...

You know. In Poland we can't use PayPal, and there is not too much other ways off paying to another country, on another continent, so I would not buy a video from you, but your videos are my favourite (beside some finnish vids :P)...

Maybe if I will go to some trip to America, or you would come to Europe, I would buy one frome you in person....

we could set up a new section on this forum for communication about seeding files.
that would be so easy to do. even just a sticky in the videos section. if anybody has a website, http://www.blogtorrent.com/ is a really easy way to set up a torrent sharing site, and anybody can upload to it, so we could share big movies really fast. I tried on my university site, but it didn't work because they don't allow PHP, and i tried on a couple free sites but couldn't get it to work (probably because they block that kind of thing). if anybody wants to have a go at it, the blog torrent program is only like, five megs so it's pretty easy to throw online...

I really like the idea with sending over a prog.
Skype is fastest i think. And that would also give people the opportunity to burn it down to a DVD if they want that..
And then i would also like a insiders guide to your pendulium sets.. I really like them!

hey evan,
i hear your predicament, and i'm sure every one who makes big videos and works hard on their projects has had the same idea. i know i have. Any way, i'd surely throw 15 for a video, because i have seen your work and i enjoy what you do. for those who don't know your style and your stuff, a high quality sample might be needed, but i still think 15 can't be argued with.

I used to host an ftp when I used to be into the other "scene" alot. I may be able to convince my girl to host it, as she has high speed and it is on 24/7. I would host any video, new modified vids/chan's classics/any requests/all requests. Would anyone be interested in this? Probably have a 4-5 user max though, to save some speed

I would like it because the quality of the picture is so much better on TV. Plus then you can just kick back and watch the video while sitting in your comfortable living room or whatever. I like to watch the vids but my computer is at a desk and it isn't as comfortable. Also i like the sound better on TV because i only have headphones for my computer. Anyway, your online videos rock, but it would be cool to check em out on TV. It would be cool also to have a video that is strictly DVD from you and not online. I would definately purchase a few.

Jared had the good idea (and pointed out the easy software) that I finally got around to implementing. This is highly experimental, but I'd like to try it out:

http://www.freedomfootbags.com/shredtorrent/index.php

I still haven't done a thorough read up on the whole bittorent concept, so my approach here may change slightly, but blogtorrent seems to be a pretty cool application...

For more information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bittorrent

Right now, I'm the only one seeding Evan's radical video, so please, anyone who has the bandwidth to share, consider running the client and allow people to upload from you by following the simple instructions presented on the site.

If you have videos to share, by all means, create an account and start sharing it with us. I'll be putting some of the more poplular videos from the Freedom Library on here as soon as I get a chance.

If this gets popular, I'd see a tracker integrated into the footbag.org galleries.

Feedback?

B-)

I am seeding as we speak, and I will be for the rest of the night.

If you already have the file, which should be LovelySJFF~04_SICKNESS.mp4, then change the name to LovelySJFF04_SICKNESS.mp4 (meaning, just remove the tilda "~"), open up the torrent, and choose to save the file where you have the video already on your Hard Drive. The bit-torrent client will check the file to make sure it's the same, and once it does this, you will be seeding. :D
