playing only with sand?

Post by Nogbad » 06 Dec 2005 04:15

How killing would it be to my game to play only with sandbags? I find that when I do hit tricks, it's with the sandbags and when I take one out, it's amost like putting on an old pair of shoes, just feels right. So ho bad would it be if I played strictly with sand?

I started out with sandbags and played with them all the way up until worlds 04. When I got there I was in for a rude surprise as almost every circle was using 32 panel bags I sucked with them. If I could go back in time I would have started out playing with 32 panel bags.

That being said sand bags are great for starting out. But, if you intend to get serious it might not be a bad idea to invest in a nice 32 like a footfighter.

Well I have both a footfighter and an abshire, just seems I pull the better tricks in what I can do when I am kicking a sandbag.

Yeah I tend to do that too. I'm trying to slowly break out of it, but I find that learning single tricks is sometimes easier with sand. I much prefer to use a 32 during runs though, because 32s have a more consistant set to them. Lately I've been drilling a lot with my lesh 32, and that's helping me get more comfortable with it. I see some pros/semi-pros using sand, but I think that when I achieve guiltless, I should only be using 32s.

Thats what I mean, I feel guilty not kicking the 32's But if I hit anything decent I've noticed it's with sand.

Its not bad to start out with sand bags, after awhile they felt too light for me and I just started playing better with a good broken in 32. I could never go back to sand bags, too light.

Sandbags are great bags!

32's are just better for a solid guiltless game because they set truer and are easier to make heavy, which a lot of people like

I think that when one is starting out one should play with the easiest equipment possible. Too many potentially great shredders are turned away from the game because the startup time is soooo long. In this respect I think sandbags are great. In fact, I think even the pros would play with sandbags, if they truly thought they were better (i.e. easier to use at that level.) To repeat, I think this game is too hard and anything that makes the game easier is a boon to the indivdual and the the game at large.

So why do better players prefer panel footbags with beads or pellets? I can't say for everybody but I can speak from own experience (and I'm not a 'better' player). As a newbie I thought the most challenging thing about the game was stalling a clipper, so I did everything possible to make that task easier. As my game developed and my clipper became dependable, that's when I started trying harder tricks. What I leared is that the harder the trick becomes (uptime concepts like pixie, for example), the more dependable the set must be, and the good stall becomes more of an assumption. So in my opinion, panel bags with beads have a much more reliable set, and for that reason I prefer them.

I'm definitely no pro, so take my opinion with a grain of sand. 8)

I used sandbags for almost the first year of my game but eventually evolved into some 32's. Playing with a 32 will make ur game more precise and clean imo.

sanbags are like a skateboard with no pop.
There is always a bigger trick.

When i looked in the video section, I saw that :

http://www.footbag.cz/video/footbag_ct1.wmv

So maybe it's easer to play with a cheese sandwich rather than sand or 32 panel bags.

i skipped sandbags prettymuch altogether... from crotchet to 32s... i improved quickly, but the break in time on the 32 killed me... i didnt really like my 32 for about a week... then it got better.. and better... and now i can hit all the basics, and alittle harder ones as well. and i LOVE my bag now

I'm probably going to get a 32 soon...When I get my lavers and can hit a mirage and will stop spending money on preventing laptop from overheating.

About the setting...I am sort of starting to notice. I currently own 2 sandbags (/joy) and the one that is better broken, I have a more difficult time setting where I want it to. Probably because it isn't really round and can mold into positions and doesn't always leave the foot the same way.

I guess it's natural progression to go to a 32 eventually.

It's safe to say that all beginners naturally start out with sandbags. It's presumeably an easy road for starters to get the nack on the set and not feel guilty in being sloppy in the catch. However, as your sets improve as does your game, 32s are likely much more reliable as it all really depends on the crisp set that the bags can give. Once it's mentally engraved into you, sandbags are pretty much that - beyond your experience level (Level UP!). That's when you know that it really doesn't depend on how you catch the bag when it comes to doing proper freestyling.

And yeah, busted's explanation deserves major props! Can't give a better one myself. :P

I play best and feel the most comfortable with sand bags. There are two main reasons why I like 32s, though:

the sound they make (the sound that I grew up playing with before non-32-panel sandbags became popular) -- it's more satisfying for me to heard the beads, rather than almost no sound with the sand;

and the same reason already mentioned, that many other people play with 32s, and playing with others, say at tournaments, gets REALLY frustrating and loses all the fun when you are not used to playing with the bags you end up using.

I think when I play next I will use both, but probably mostly sand.

I also started out with sand. I still do use sand, but Im also using a 32. I like the sound that the 32 makes when I kick it. I also like watching it better than a sand bag, if that makes sense.
Use whatever style you like! :D Gfsmoothie uses sand BTW. :)

Hello,
My name is Garrett Dryden and i use mostly Sandbags. The reason is because they stall easily and becasue they feel O so good. Another reason is because i Stitch my very own sandbags. I make "The Dryden" that is sold on FreedomFootbags.com . I make a few different patterns and they are all hella sweet.
2Panel
4panel
12panel
14panel
32panel
My bags are unlike any other bags and they stall at least 10X easyer then all other bags.
If you have any questions or if you want to purchase one form me Just pm me.

Peace,
Garrett Dryden
