Bulge in Bush`s jacket during Presidential debates in Miami
Bulge in Bush`s jacket during Presidential debates in Miami
I`m sure several of you have heard about this already. Here`s a photo from the New York Times (sorry, I`m bad about inserting images in text, so here`s just the link)
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/200 ... e.1841.jpg
Many people have speculated that the bulge was a radio receiver, so Bush could get answers from an outside source.
What I find the most shocking, and revealing, isn`t whether or not Bush cheated during the debate. The world may never know what that bulge was. But what the world knows FOR SURE, and what is documented for future generations, is the reaction the White House had when people first started writing about the bulge.
The first response from the white house was that the pictures showing the bulge `might have been doctored.`
But anybody with a VCR who taped the debates can clearly see that they weren`t doctored photos. Once the White House realized that every News broadcast of the debates clearly showed the bulge, and that they couldn`t just claim that the bulge was `doctored,` they CHANGED their story.
Bush campaign spokeswoman Nicolle Devenish went on record saying:
"There was nothing under his suit jacket. It was most likely a rumpling of that portion of his suit jacket, or a wrinkle in the fabric."
But look at the photo! Or if you taped the debates, look at your own VCR replay! How can a `wrinkle` or `rumple` look so rectangular?
What burns me is how this administration`s first response to any criticism or question is to lie and discredit the accuser, even when the questions or criticisms are legit. Do I know what the bulge under Bush`s jacket was? No. But I do know that this administration tried to tell me that it didn`t exist, even though everybody can see it with their own eyes. I also know that that bulge isn`t `a wrinkle in the fabric,` and I feel my intelligence is insulted when this sort of explanation is offered.

you think he'd just have it in his ass or something, to hide the bulge..
I agree with you Ken, those with intelligence should be offended.
It makes you wonder how many of those great leaders throughout history reigned over a population of mostly uneducated people who merely tended to crops..
meh i dunno.

Maybe its a ..... robot Bush sent here from the depths of hell to destroy the world!
But I agree with Ken. A wrinkle of farbic? Give me a break! My robot Bush is more beliveable than that. If there going to lie, at least take a moment, take a breath and come up with something good.
And maybe Bush could have sliced a million away from Iraq and buy a radio recevier that smaller.
From our president i would expect nothing else.

this came up in another topic...
I dont think Bush cheated, it reminds me of the movie the Emperors Club though---good movie by the way.
I heard from lisiting to conservaitve talk radio- (i like to hear what both sides have to say, i also listen to air america
) that people thought Kerry cheated in the first debate for taking a piece of paper out of his pocket or somthing, your not allowed to bring notes with you to a debate its one of the rules.
anyway i dont think either cheated-

.
The point isn`t whether or not Bush cheated. The point is that the Administration`s automatic response to any kind of criticism is to deny reality, then attack the critic.
Let`s follow the course of events.
1. Millions of people see with their own eyes Bush on TV with rectangular bulge under his jacket.
2. Somebody points this out.
3. Bush administration`s first reaction: the photos are doctored.
4. The entire world checks their VCRs, and sees with their own eyes, that Bush has a rectangular bulge under his jacket.
5. Bush administration changes its story, claims that NOTHING is under his jacket, and that the bulge is just a wrinkle in the fabric.
Want me to break it down further?
1. You see something with your own eyes.
2. Bush administration tells you you didn`t see it.
3. You whip out video to check, and hey! Yes, you did see it.
4. Bush administration tells you that black is white, up is down, and my urine is lemonade.

understood.
you really cant beleive anything they tell you, the fact that they are trying so hard to cover it up makes you think that some shanangins did go down.
its like- a main reason why i think there could be a draft in bushs 2nd term- because he said there wasnt gonna be one.
it is nice to see sooo many people watching the debates though, everyone is into the election this year over 60 million watched the last debate

yes that was in the french news also yesterday (well at least in the paper I read). I was actually less surprised at the possibility that GW could have used a receiver of sorts for the debate than by the fact that he gets his suits from a FRENCH tailor (Georges de Paris... 11 000$ suits)... with all th french bashing going on you'd thought he'd at least get his threads from Saville Row (UK)... Anyway, the white house's response is very predictable Ken. They're what 2 weeks from the elections? I'd think that the general concensus is:
- we're being attacked? WELL DENY EVERYTHING!
that would at least by some time to think of a better cover-up.. such as fabric crumples in a 11000$ suit !!!

^^^ Scruitiny such as this keeps them in check and publically demonstrates that they're still on a democratic leesh. If we don't give a crap when we have suspicions then it sets a bad precedent for them in the future - i.e welcome to the gulag bro
If our scrutiny even makes a few people vote, or vote differently, then yes it does benefit us because then it potentially changes who gets power and who doesn't, and that has global ramifications.
But that's not really the point of the thread. The real point is a good one - that I haven't heard before...I sort of see the same thing in Israel - Israel has a sort of seige mentality that it adopts when addressing anything it deals with. The current US admin doesn't have that, but it is certainly a dismissive attitute that isn't primarily focused on giving a truthful answer, just one that will work. That's an openly partisan and broad generalisation but there you go.

I agree that the government should be questioned. That is the whole point of democracy, and why it is supposed to work!!
Because the people of a nation are supposed to vote in the person that they feel best represents their views and what they want done in the world. But democracy is not a matter of simply electing someone and then sitting down and never doing anything again!!
People NEED to speak out when they feel like their government is doing something they do not agree with. Just because someone is elected does not mean you cannot write letters to your government and have objections.
Even if there was nothing in Bush's jacket, part of the point is that people need to be able to question things in a democratic government and receive a fair and honest answer, and the White House's response did not seem fair, honest, or respectful of the people they are governing.

if bush wanted to cheat dont you think he could have put something a little smaller. come on people, hes the president, they can build him a radio the size of a matchbox. at the dollar store you can buy a pen with a radio in it. now why the hell would he but a big box on his back. and in the middle of his back! just think about that.

Personally I think cheating or not cheating in a debate like that is a very unimportant thing to be worrying about in the upcoming election and I hope people are more worried about the human rights abuses occurring in your name in Afghanistan and Iraq right now, as well as the human rights abuses occurring in Israel and Russia where the leaders are using US doctrine as their defence. I also hope you are concerned about the huge health and education problems your nation is facing and the economic problems created by a government that raises spending and cuts taxes.
As Ken pointed out - a government that first response is to directly and knowing LIE to you is not one you can trust - regardless of why they did that - it's something that should worry you - if they are prepared to lie about such a minor matter - it seems very likely that they will lie about anything if it is in their best interests - that means you can't trust anything they say. I hope that worries you more than wether your president "cheated" or not.
