Crossbody Rake

Crossbody Rake
SET >> [XBD] > RAKE [BOD][DEL]

Hey guys, can anyone help me understand these moves? I have no clue how to do them, but I want to learn though! I tried looking at videos where people do rakes (especially the Vasek ones), but I still can't seem to figure out how to do these. Any tips or help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :D

Go there. Click on Baseline. And scroll down till u see Xbody rake. I used this video to learn them.

A quick discription of how to do it:

You set it up and act like ur going to go into a clipper stall with the foot u want to rake it with. But instead of clippering, turn 90 degrees and position your toe under the bag and swing it through. I'm sorry for the brief description but i'm a little busy ATM. I'm sure others will help out.

The way I do rakes is I set the bag from toe to where I would normally do a clipper stall. Then turn 45 - 90 degrees depending on where the bag is. Then bend your "raking" leg at your knee keeping your knee and thigh pointed straight down and your lower leg about parallel with the ground behind you. As the bag descends, bring your lower leg forward and catch the bag on your foot while continuing to rake it forward. The big key to this move is to WATCH THE BAG hit you foot. It might seem obvious but many times I will drop the bag because I am simply not watching it like I should. To do this move from clipper just set the bag up from your clipper, turn slightly, and do the same movement as setting from toe. Make sure to try both sides.

in my opinion if you spin on an x body rake it isn't clean - you have to keep facing in roughly the same direction as you do the move - otherwise you lose the x body ness of the move.

I tend to think of it as a symp mirage but with virtually no jump and the dex after the toe stall. I don't know if that makes much sense and I attempt some kind of rake move about once every three months so I don't even know if that's a good technique or not.

Well, I've learnt xbd rakes and I do them the way the video in the link shows, so it's similar to the way Ben describes them. I'll try it without the spin Jeremy and see what happens! Thanks for all the help guys!

Okay, I read the description of a rake, I just don't understand it.

How do you catch it behind (more to the side) of you? In all the videos I've seen, when someone does a rake it just looks like instead of setting the bag they just (I don't know how to describe it) pendulum motion(?) it forward. Help?

Rake is like when youre just about to land a clipper stall then you twist your hips and you "rake" it up and it ends in a toe delay.

Go to www.flipside.com and go to practice session, they have a demonstration i think.

Ah, but it is important to remember that there is the difference between Rake and Cross-Body Rake. I don't remember seeing ANY video of normal Rakes.

A regualr Rake is done like this:
Imagine you keep your right leg straight, and then move it all the way backwards, still looking at your foot over your right shoulder.
In this position, the surface you stall the bag on in a toe-stall should more or less face the ground.
It is in this position you should start stalling/scooping the bag forward.

If you stand with the bag on your toe, swinging your leg forward and backwards, like a pendulum (not the move Wink), the Rake would be the "from back to front" motion where the bag is in the air and is beeing caught while you move your leg forward.
The further behind you you catch the bag and begin the motion forward (which, in fact, will be the catching of the bag), the more clean the Rake is.

A Cross-Body Rake is the same thing, just done where you look at you right foot over your left shoulder. The XBD Rake is usually done a lot smaller, as explained above.

Hope this explains it!

Yeah, that was very helpful in clearing that up for me. That's what I thought but I can't seem to do it. Oh well, practice, practice, practice.

one of jorden's videos gives great examples of rakes. cleanly done and his body is in a position where the camera catches the rake perfectly. I think it was the wack session but i'm not positive

Just discovered i can do this trick

I can do alot of different ways

but in the sake of guiltlessnes is there an add difference in the different way

1. right toe towards the left side, half spin towards the left rake with right foot

2. or left toe set straight up turn towards the right and rake with right foot.

is there a difference to these approaches or is it all the same or is this a situation to use the terms backside and front side?????

I hope that makes any sense

If its on the right side of your body and you rake it with your right foot like your second example its a 2 add rake. The first one you said is a x body rake and gets 3 adds.

there is no such thing as a mirage xbd rake. xbd rakes are the the same as clippers only the bag lands on your toe instead of your inside and then you drag it back into the normal toe position. So any move that ends in a clipper can be done as a xbd rake move too - whirling rakes, drifter rakes, double down rakes etc.

Moves that end in a toe cannot be done ending with a xbd rake. - you can still do non xbd rake toe moves but a miraging non xbd rake would be very hard to hit cleanly in my opinion and would probably be (ie the bag goes too far behind you). Most likely you're not hitting a miraging rake at all but something else - maybe just a normal toe set xbd rake - which is like a slurry mirage.

what a stupid thing to debate. If you want call it a mirage xbdy rake. You obviously know more about footbag than I do.

edit: Sorry, I'm a little stressed and didn't mean to say it like that.

technically you could indeed call a drifter xbdy rake a mirage xbdy rake. However it's very rare to call a drifter a downtime muted miraging same foot clipper or any varient of that. A drifter is a drifter. A drifter rake is a rake out of drifter. This implies that the rake is xbdy already so there's no need to say so. "miraging xbdy" rake is a very ambiguous term - it could be a drifter rake or a whirl rake with a vertical dex. It's also an unused term because mirages end in the toe position (ie infront of you - not neccessarly actually on a toe) while drifters end in a xbdy position. Thus a move that goes op in>same xbdy position is always in my experience until possibly this topic referred to as a drifter move. I've been playing footbag for 4 years and I've been very active on this forum. I'm fairly sure I know what I'm talking about.

In any respect this is a completely pointless debate - my point was that I didn't think that Troyson is hitting a miraging xbdy rake at all - and I've spoken to him a about this on chat twice so I feel like I've got more information on this topic than what's simply been said here too.

As I said in the general footbag topic, I'm really bored of these debates and I'm not going to debate further. I'm happy to help try and figure out what Troyson is actually hitting but if you want to argue about mirage xbdy rake I really wont' comment. In fact I already regret commenting on this at all.

this is what i am hitting...i do a normal mirage set from my right toe, but instead of just landing it in a toe stall, i turn to the right and rake it like i would for a xbd rake. What would this be called?

another trick i am confused about is this...left toe>op in out>same turn to the right and rake like the i said in the first one. its like a toe set pickup but i turn to the right and rake or xbd rake it. I was told this is called a swerve but im not sure if im doing it correctly. i hope this clears things up.

i wasnt trying to start a debate. if i was a newbie and i was trying to describe a drifter rake, i would say miraging xbd rake. im not trashing your footbag knowledge, and im not doubting you know what you're talking about, so dont patronize me with "you must know more about footbag than me" obviously you have more experience.

"this is what i am hitting...i do a normal mirage set from my right toe, but instead of just landing it in a toe stall, i turn to the right and rake it like i would for a xbd rake. What would this be called? "

this definately sounds like a drifter rake to me, but the question is which foot you're raking with. is it the left or the right?

then its a mirage that you're catching too far back.

and the other one is a pickup with a turn. they arent their own tricks, they're just styley (or uncontrolled) versions of mirage and pickup.

so for it to be xbd i would have to turn to the left instead of the right and rake wid my right foot?

Troy - this is what you're currently hitting.

If you turn to the left do a complete mirage dex (so the bag goes all the way infront of then behind your left foot, then goes all the way infront of your right foot then lands on your left foot toe in a xbd position and gets dragged through to the normal position. This is a drifter rake. I am sure that the majority of people on this forum find this move very difficult.

I am really confused on x body rake. I have been doing them (or at least what I thought was them) for a long time now, I just don't know what qualifies as a x body rake. When you do an x body rake (assuming that you turn 90 degrees) and "double step" (put set foot back on ground while bag is still in air) isn't that just a mirage with a 90 degree turn? When you do a x body rake and do not "double step"(set foot does not touch ground as you turn) isn't that just a symposiummirage witha 90 degree turn? what make a x body rake an x body rake? thanks for your time

just a thought ...

a toe delay caught in x-body position (clipper) and just pulled through until a normal toe delay position, all being done in one smooth motion (rake)

There is NO dexing in just a x-body rake, so if you doing a dex your not doing a x-body rake, moreas a miraging x-body toe unwrap, maybe even something else altogether.

Technically, the most clean x-body rake you could do would involve NO turning whatsoever IMO, but that is VERY hard to do, so turning into it makes it come out smooth and in position for the next move.

I always think the cleanest rakes would be like doing a x-body heel stall, but not catching it on the heel but actually catching on the toe and raking it to the front of your body ...

Just my thoughts on x-body rakes ...
