Too much filming?

Post by Muffinman »

Ever since CSS4 it seems like there are so many people out there with video cameras at tournaments, these days, that footage is almost OVERUSED. It's hard to say something like that about Vasek footage but I was just watching Evan Lovely's Vasek special and seeing all the people filming in the background made me realize that there are going to be lots more videos out in the future with the exact same footage that Evan and Eric (Sorcery101) used (I haven't seen Ryan Thomas' Worlds DVD yet...). I am sad in advance knowing that I will probably be sick of Worlds 2004 footage and feel like I haven't even seen enough. I know I'm sick of CSS4 footage and I feel regret for having spent most of my time filming and not enjoying myself and actually WATCHING people shred. The exception, of course, is NICE editing. I enjoyed Sam's CSS4 video the most -- the slowmotion one, not CSS4hallway. It was very unique and the editing made it enjoyable to watch regardless of the quality of shred. It's very late/early(?) and I am dominating all of the forums at the moment but what are your thoughts on this? (Trying to not focus too much on the whole asking permission issue -- however on a secondary note how do NON-pro players feel about being filmed? Is there anyone who is not "pro" who would feel offended by the same issues some pros seem to be taking offense to in regards to asking permission to film? -- Did that make sense? Should I have ended my parenthesis a while ago? Why have I not separated paragraphs? Is this too hard to read?)

Im not going to try to attempt to answer all of your questions chan. But I would say thay if those people enjoy filming, then sure, they should film. Personaly I enjoy playing so thats what im going to do.

I think its essential to the sport that there are people about who want to film it, the number of random people ive directed to a vasek video is lots, and without that resource being there, those people would have no idea how freeking cool footbag is, I think alot more people end up seeing these videos then we expect.

i think that eventually you will not only have to ask the kickers to film, but the other filmer (singular) as well.

like, you might need contracts and stuff to be able to film;
so you dont steal footage from paramount or universal ;)

I think, proportionately, there's way, way too much Vasek footage. I really would have liked it if the filmers at Worlds didn't fixate so much on Vasek and got more footage of other players. Not necessarily even BAP members, some intermediate, too! Big combos aren't the most important thing! Diverge, people! Evan Lovely may have just put out a Vasek special, but he made sure to put out the prequel (with great footage of other players), and the Routines. Even in his earlier vids like CSS5 and SJFF2, many other players are shown. This is a good example to follow.

Yeah, I used to bring my camera to every event, but I don't even bother anymore. There are so many cameras that I'm going to see all that footage anyways. So I spend my time hanging out instead.

yeah...from what i've seen, worlds was 90% vasek playing and everyone watching him. While he is great..no AMAZING, i'd still like to see more of some other players from worlds. Now i haven't seen the ryan thomass video yet, but there still is usually more footage. I mean, there were like 15 cameras filming vasek, i'm sure they had to of filmed other people. Where's the footage?

Totally!

Where is the Johnny Murphy footage? The best runs I've seen of his so far are in the back ground of other peoples runs 8O

And Nick Laroche!!!!!! - Seriously I have only seen at the most 3 runs from him ever!! - The only stuff I can think of is one run in Andrew's vid - and some stuff at the night shred of the chilly philly where the biggest thing I think he does is drop pdx baroque.

yeah, Nick is totally underated.
Not to mention underfilmed!

He's got the best style and he does lots of moves I happen to think are really cool. (swirls/drifters)

and Nick wtf! You're not coming to Finland? it would be cool if you could make it... I know.. it's expensive. Work hard.. not like this

I think I might have the most unique worlds footage. And thanks to Mosher, you can all see it sometime soon!

:D

I feel that we may need more creativity in filming/editing.

Also more speed. Every time I've been filmed - by the time the video has been released I've been easily a better player and haven't really enjoyed watching the footage at all - except to be able to see how much I've improved.

I totally agree with that! Except for the fact that I don't get filmed, I have to use my own camera :)

Yeah for sure - I wasn't haveing a go at you at all Ian. Exams are more important than getting footbag footage out... well... maybe...

I was more thinking of the videos from the 2003 worlds - that were very well produced - but by the time they came out the footage was completely out of date. I think it's important to have a balance between production values and time it takes to get the video out.

yeh thats cool, just wanted to make my reasons clearer

just a thing about the proliferation of Vasek footage; i see him as like the ultimate filming subject, because he's a walking highlight reel and pretty much everyone run is worthy of putting on video, there seems to be a sort of 'intimidation' factor there when he is in a circle etc. So theres so much footage to be had, so many badass moves and combos, and so much you can do with it in the way of editing. Making a cool vid of him is one of my main goals in filming, i would guess it would a goal of many other people?

I rollerblade as well... .it's kinda similar to every aussie blading video being packed with Brock Midgley footage...simply cos he busts out at every spot, every time, so he's always there.
