Due to pestering by certain Aussie shredders i took one for the team and spent the whole arvo editing this video of the informal SICK3 competition we held at the Brisbane City Sessions in September this year, in Australia i should add. Its 11megs and 2 minutes long, but it is edited and has titles and music and stuff thats why its a bit bigger. i wanted to try a more edited video this time. hope its not too big for all y'all!
Dan would like you to post your opinions on the winning combo. There are two in particular which are very close i think. We'd like the wider audience to judge if possible.
Oh, thanks Jeremy I'm impressed You pronounced my whole name pretty well too. And remembered my last name - Props!
I just looove [EDIT]Symple Butterflies[/EDIT] - In fact those very pretty styley.

I think it's the first time I've seen footage of Dan Ednie. He is good, makes it look easy. Although personally, I think Jeremy's combo (sumo > phoenix > ps whirl) should take it...
Was that really DaDa Curves? It looked like blur > pixie symp butterfly > symp butterfly?

Oh poop, did I really wrote Dadas there? It seems like I did... wonder why. I was supposed to write Symple Butterflies - sorry I really need to go to sleep...

Lol - I sense sarcasm...
I think symp butterflies are cool when done cleanly - I think mine are clean.
Also I love Dan's comment before his first combo - that's such classic Dan - he has an enclypodiea of comments like that
not every one can hit fog, same thing goes with sumo, but most people can hit pheonix and ps whirl. pixie whirl out of fog is hard (or at least it is for me) same with stepping out of whirls.
im glad some people are seeing the closeness between those two particular combos; at first glance jeremy's is bigger and better but when u consider the links and moves in Dan's, it gets harder to chose i think
sorry about the dada curves thing, i just assumed they were since i thought the old debate between Anssi and Jeremy was over the legitimacy of dada curves... it must have been symp butterflies though, my bad.
what do you think of the video editing and stuff? its my first edited vid so some feedback would be cool if possible. Is the quality compared to video size acceptable?
I thought the editing was GREAT. I don't really have a problem with video size -- I'm willing to download several hundred megabyte vids if the quality and editing skill is there. Really good job, Ian. Nice blend of fonts, style, and music.
Those are both first for me, I don't think Sumo>pixie ducking butterfly>ps whirl should be first. It is a great combo, don't get me wrong. Each one of those moves don't have a ton of difficulty, aren't extremely hard to combo out of, and aren't very rare, along the lines of what like Andrew was saying.
So out of all those combos, I think the one I could hit first would definitely be Sumo>pixie ducking butter>P.S. Whirl. Props though, on all of the tricks, also, I think I am slandering my judgement to Dan, because of his awesome finishing technique, as he powers up off his ki.
As I can't personally hit any of these combos I cannot say which is harder, so I voted for what I thought looked good...! I really liked Dan's combos and I also like his style a lot.
Nice vid. Thanks for sharing..
I agree with what Dan said about it at the Ausfootbag forum -

i really enjoyed it
jeremys combo had a wider range of elements than both of my combos
and was more difficult
my five>five> five combo was all whirls
and the fog> pixie WHIRL> blurry whirl was also pretty standard
the only thing that worked in my favourewas that i hit 3 maybe 4 really good combos whereas jeremy only hit one combo
and he had about 30 tries before he got it
he was feeling pretty sore that day so that explains the inconsistency
dan
Although I only took 6 attempts I think and the reason why I was so sore was because I arrived on time for that days shred - not two hours late
I do think my combo is really one sided - all the hard dexes are with the one leg - but I don'tthink that's a big issue considering the difference in dex types and the fact that I do still do some stuff with my other leg.
Both sidedness could be taken more into account however when the combos are really closely matched on other aspects, and you need a differentiating factor.
I'm with Max - I don't think it should be an issue at all. I think variety should definitly be an issue.
In my opinion a sick 3 should be judged simply on which combo is technically the hardest combo to hit. I think how well each move is it is part of this - as is variety and obviously difficulty. It's obviously technically harder to hit a combo which involves different sets on different sides of the body than it is to do a combo with similar moves on the same side of the body. So a one sided combo is technically easier than a both sided combo - and it should be one of the factors to look at - but only from a "how hard is this combo technically" point of view - not a "this combo is better because she hits a symp whirl component on both sides"
I also think that you can't judge the difficulty of a combo by what you personally find difficult or hard. Personally I find flipside swirl a lot harder than beta fusion but I'm fairly convinced that beta fusion is a harder move!!
Another important thing is the balance of the moves - A good sick 3 is one where the moves are all around the same difficulty. A combo like gyro barroque>osis>ps whirl is not a sick 3 at all and I'd rate it very lowly. A sick 3 really is only good as the easiest move in the combo - because it's about hitting the 3 hardest tricks in a row. With the combo just mentioned - the judge would have to presume that osis is one of the hardest tricks you can hit in a row - and judge accordingly. Sick 3 is not the two hardest or the hardest trick you can hit with some stuff at the end.
Those are my thoughts on how sick 3s should be judged - and how I've judged them in the past.
Well as I said variety is important because it makes the combo technically harder. Whirr>whirr>whirr is already a very hard technical combo - and ultimately that's the only thing that should be judged (the best technical combo should always win) - so it would do very well despite the lack of variety. Whirr>pdx whirl>whirr is a shit sick 3. It has two really hard moves and one completely out of place easy one. It is not really a sick 3 at all and shouldn't score well. Perhaps some intermediate who has a freakishly good whirr could do it and win - but in an open comp I'd be inclined to give the points to anybody who did a combo with 3 clearly harder moves than pdx whirl. Who cares if you can hit Whirr both sides - if it's a sick 3 you should use all 3 moves - that's what the competition is all about!!
