Reasonable amount of time between competitions?
EDIT: Here are the final results of this poll
How often should we have competitions? (Ie. How often will you be able to make a new sick 3 video)
Once a week
12% [ 5 ]
Once every 2 weeks
35% [ 14 ]
Twice a month
20% [ 8 ]
Once a month
30% [ 12 ]
Total Votes : 39
Basically I'm just trying to get a read on how often you people think I should organize these competitions for each skill group.
Currently I was thinking of trying to have one every 2 weeks for each level. However, it all really depends on the competitors, and how often you guys and girls can get videos in. It's not worthwhile to have them more frequently if only a couple of videos are coming in each time. Please only vote in this poll if you are a competitor.
So, is 2 weeks adequate time to get a new sick 3 video in everytime? Should it be longer? Shorter? Vote in the poll if you are a competitor, and discuss.

That's a good point ... Too much sick 3 practice can be a bad thing.Fu Xi wrote:Well, I'm competing intermediate and i think 2 weeks should be fine. 1 week for me would be focusing on sick 3 too much of my session while i should be schooling strings. So I vote for 2.
We'll just have to see what the rest of modified thinks about it.

Johnny wrote:I say once a month, that way this idea wont get old as quickly. This will also allow for better sick threes, because you haev a chance to improve on your last one. I don't know about anyone else but there isn't too much a I can hit now that I couldn't hit 2 weeks ago.
But at the same time ... I'm sure you could think of a number of different combos to throw together that would be of similar difficulty/coolness. It's more so about throwing down different types of combos and seeing what the community thinks of them then spending an entire month trying to get one perfect combo that is the absolute most difficult.
About the idea getting old too quickly, there is also the issue of this forum likely being quite dead and not very active if competitions were spaced as far as a month apart.

What's the difference between every two weeks and twice a month?
I think 2 weeks is the way to go. I like the idea that in a few months I'll really be challenged to hit hard combos that I haven't hit before. First few comps will just be standard kinds of things - but we'll quickly be forced to be more creative - I think that's good!

If the comp was set for once a week, it would probably lose the value for those competing.
"I got 5th this week. Oh well, I have a week to avenge myself so no biggie."
In comparison to...
"Damn, I worked hard for this one but got 5th. I'll have to put in a few hours every other day into this thing for next time."
My point is, if you were to hold it every week then people wouldn't give a damn since they only had to wait one more week until they could try again. If it was spaced longer apart, people would actually work hard to leave their mark until next time.

Maybe every week a differnt level can have there sick 3. So every 3 weeks. This way there be less confusison and every level have there week to shine so to speak. There be always something going on for people to vote and that gives plenty of time for people to throw together something.
I think I going to take over Canada. You should help.

I think 2 weeks is good - because it means we have a week of voting and then a week to film a new combo. 1 month might be better because that will mean more competitors but a month is a long time - I bet we'll wish it was shorter.
I think Melissa's idea is really good two - and a good compromise between 2 weeks and 1 month

How about this?
First day of the month, Beginner Sick 3 vids are posted. Polls are open for 8 days, then a winner is announced.
Then, intermediate Sick3 vids are posted. Polls are open for 9 days. Winner is announced.
Then, Open Sick 3 vids are posted. 11 days, winner is announced.
Cycle starts anew the next month. Like Melissa`s suggestion, this spaces it out, and ensures that Open Sick 3 doesn`t steal the thunder from intermediate or beginner. It also means that each month there is only one winner for each level of Sick 3. I think spacing it out so you have only one shot a month will push people to really post their best combo.
As for the spectators, we get a new vid almost every 10 days, which gives us time to watch and re-watch the combos, and take our time voting.

That is a good idea ....
I like the spacing things out idea, although I still think it would be better to have more than one combo per month for skill group.
Do you suggest we start that right away, and hold off on having the comps as originally planned, or go ahead with the first slate of comps as planned just to get everyone a taste, and then set up the spacings?

It's a good call ... I want to see how many people we get sending in videos for this first round of competitions .. Then I can more easily decide how often and with what spacing these things should run to best suit everyone.Jeremy wrote:I say go ahead with them. Otherwise I'll publically release my combo now and hit another one - I don't want to sit on it for three weeks!
Right now it seems split up the middle of people who want it done as frequently as every 2 weeks or less, and people who want it with longer spacings.
One option has definitely been ruled out in my mind ... The competitions will NOT be 1 week apart, due to the reasons provided by folks here, and the difficulty it would create for people to get in videos consistently.

Ken's idea sounds fantastic. I just wanted to add that I've ran several 3d art competitions online via forums (most art forums do this), and we always give one month for anything serious. Though some competitions are larger, and there is the classic sketch of the week.
Maybe a sub-category for people who have a shred video that doesn't really meet the shred 30 or sick3 category: Shred of the Week. People could submit their more random vids to that?
