Straight from the rules which you hopefully read:

"All players are subject to having their videos moved to a different skill level if it is deemed necessary".

Ie. If someone sends me a fearless run and says they want to compete Novice, I will kindly inform them that they are above that, and they will be moved to the proper decision.

We'll mostly play it by ear (and eye I guess)... As more videos come in we'll have a better sense of the level of play of each of the 3 skill groups. However, more videos have to come in for that to happen .. so send away folks!

video formats

Post by C-Fan »

One concern I have is what format the videos are posted in. Personally, I am not able to see avi files at work. I can see wmv9 and MPG. But if in a Sick 3 contest, one or both of the players have their combo in a format I cant see, I cant vote. For most people this may not be an issue, since they can download players, but I was thinking it would be cool if somebody could re-encode every video so its available in several formats, which would allow more people to watch, and consequently vote.

I think having the first comp when they are is good as it will give me an indication of how many people are able to get videos together and at what speed.

And yes, the leaderboard will have the position of anyone who has ever competed.

Hmmm .. Interesting .. Fortunately I think this will be the exception, and not the norm. Certain AVI's haven't been working for me lately either, but I run them in Quick time and they work fine, have you tried that?

At any rate, to answer you question ... Since most people will be able to see all the videos, this shouldn't be a huge issue. In your case, it's unfortunate, but especially with their being deadlines for the submission of videos, it would just take extra time to get everything reencoded.

How difficult a process it the re-encoding anyway? How long would it take?
Would the person themselves simply be able to re-encode the video themselves into something they can wathc?

Sorry, I just don't know much about the process.

Anyway, I guess that's not really an accurate answer, but I guess we'll have to see if it becomes a big problem (ie. lots of people submitting avis, or lots of people who are like you and can't view avis)

Ok I have some questions:
when is the open deadline?
How many sick3s does one submit for this comp?
Can I submit one sick3 in open and one in intermediate?
Can people who are not modified memebers participate?
How big can the videos be?
What video format is preferred?

The open deadline is November 5th at 11 am

You only submit one sick 3.

No, you cannot submit a combo for two different skill levels

Well if the people who aren't members could take 2 seconds to create an account that they'd be able to PM me videos with it would make things a lot easier.

The videos should be of decent quality to see what moves are being hit, but shouldn't be too big as to take forever for people to download. There's no set limit, but under 2 megs-3 megs or so should be attainable.

I can't speak for everyone, but I guess WMV or quicktime would be preferred.

Ok well I'm signed up. I filed some combos yesterday. But I don't know if Pierre (from Unanime) will have time to get them on disc for me by the first deadline. If not, I'll submit them for the second comp.

thanks for your answers.

I have a concern/comment.
There seems to be a very fine line between "novice" and "intermediate" and a HUUUUUUUGE gap between "intermediate" and "open". "Open" and "novice" seem accurate to me, but intermediate should be of a much higher level, I think. When I think intermediate now I think of the results from Chilly Philly (I think it was) where intermediates were busting tripless 30-second shred runs. This is the extreme of intermediate shred, I believe, however linking 2 adds is much too low-level for an intermediate level (not to put anyone down).
My initial sign-up post asked that I be put in intermediate because I am injured and I realize I have no chance at open. I changed my post based on the signup list for intermediate because I realized that I wouldn't fit under that category, either.
I would also like to complain and see Kevin Regamey in open. If pandemonium-busting Regamey (and I hear pixie mofly-busting Chris May) are in intermediate I refuse to compete in open. (I realize even injured my combo will probably go under open, but I also know that Kevin and Chris are also both capable of open-level sick 3 combos.

What do you think?
(And nothing personal to Kevin and Chris -- I just know you're both really really good and would take first and second if placed in intermediate -- that's no fun -- kind of like Dave Clavens at Worlds (was it Worlds??)....can you say dominated?)

Once the weeks go on and people see what videos are being posted in each level, the definitions of Novice, Intermediate and Open will become better defined I believe.

Also a thought I've had is after a competition or two to divide up the skill levels even more and have Open A, Open B, Intermediate A, Intermediate B, Novice A and Novice B. This would allow people who are in the lower end of skill in their division to still have a chance at gaining some votes, and it would make it an all around more fair competition. This is something that could be posed to the entire forum after a while, and may come into fruition a little later.

Now to address some of your issues .. I really don't think any of the people in Intermediate will be linking 2 adds in their sick 3's. So you may be a little off on the skill level of the players in intermediate thus far.

As far as your specific addresses of Kevin and Chris .. first off, Chris IS in open. Secondly, Kevin is injured as well, and he sent me his video and between us we both decided that although in full health he would be able to bust an open level combo, the one he sent in was of intermediate caliber.

Yeah, I got pretty frustrated trying links. Each time I tried something a bit harder, I felt it in my leg...so I decided not to push it, and go for something styley/fun instead.

Note: I was in Open to begin with, but got bumped down. There will be a time when I will go up top again.
