Bush or Kerry...yes again!

PLEASE ONLY VOTE IF:

You are an 18 year old or over US citizen who is registered to vote and you are actually going to the polls on Tuesday November 2nd to cast your ballot.

Now that we are 2 days away from electing a president I wanted to sample how the voting looks to the Modified Footbag community. Obviously this is in no way a proper sampling of the greater US and is in no way scientific.
I was going to hijack and rewrite Ken's poll from a couple weeks ago in order to save doing this again, but that wouldn't have been fair.

Word Ted. Nader Camejo all the way. I dont agree with either the republican or democratic parties, and i think we need to get out of this whole two party system that we deny we have. Sure i cant vote but this is my opinion, and it wont screw up the poll because i didnt cast a vote because i cant.

neither of those 2 options. i'll vote for Cobb or Nader...i read in the local college paper that Leonard Peltier is running...

but my opinion and millions of others in California wont matter bc according to the electoral college everyone in the state is voting for Kerry.

Brad, c'mon, you gotta factor in us leftist nutjobs when polling footbaggers on politics  the ballot has more options

My very first vote 12 years ago was for the 3rd choice. I didn't like either the Republican or the Democrat at the time so yeah I voted for ol' big ears.

I am all for multiple possiblities when it comes to elections. Hell, at the time, Abraham Lincoln was a 3rd Party candidate and he didn't even come close to winning the election by a majority vote.

However, I also live in a place I like to call Reality. Making a statement for a 3rd party candidate makes sense when one party is likely to win by a landslide or that 3rd party candidate has a shot at winning. Guess what, this is not that election. Right now there are only two people who can possibly win this presidential election...George Bush or John Kerry. Cobb and Nader won't have a chance in Hell of even winning a single state. Voting for one of them or not voting at all because you hate the Reps or Dems is simply a waste of a vote. I'm sure there are plenty of felons who would literally kill to have back their right to vote.

This election is not about voting your ideals, it's about voting for what's real. If the leftists would just curb reality a little to the right (but still way left) they would end up voting for John Kerry which would undoubtedly win him the election by a substantial margin. Under that administration the leftist ideals would be far better protected than under Bush.

If you simply choose not to vote at all then you should have that most precious right revoked. You obviously don't like the way things are going now and you sure as shit know they won't get any better if they continue. In the system we have now you get to choose between the lesser of two evils. Don't just sit there and cry because you don't like either of them. You know that one has got to be better than the other so get up off your ass and make a difference.

I think Brad has the right idea here. If you want to make a difference, go do something. Don't just think that by placing a mark on a sheet of paper every four years you are really making a difference. Selecting some candidate to "represent" you and your interests is in fact quite farcical. If you feel something is important to you, go out and make it important. The world would be a much better place if everyone went out and represented themselves instead of passing the buck and relying on something as ineffectual as voting.

So, in conclusion, try to find 30 minutes of your day to go an vote. Be proud that you have participated in one of the least effective means of being "political". Don't think that you should stop there. Go out and do something.

I disagree - voting for a 3rd party tells the other parties you care about the election but you don't like either of their parties. Not voting tells them you just don't care at all - not only that but it tells the rest of the world that too. Considering what the US has done internationally this last presidential term - I think many people will look at the percentage of people who don't vote and make (probably unfair) judgements on American people in general.

At least if you vote it says that you care about what your nation is doing.

Obviously I'm not american so haven't voted in the poll but personally I'm very pessimistic about the election. I really really really really hope Kerry wins, but I don't think he will.

I think you are missing the context in which I am making my statement. This election is too important to hold to one's ultra-high ideals about how they wish things to be. A 3rd party vote is all well and good (I've done it myself) when there is even a slight chance of that person winning or when one of the 2 major party candidates is winning by a landslide. So, I'm saying that it's okay to hold to ideals when the time is right, but in a critical election such as this when those idealistic votes could make the difference in the election of one of the 2 major parties, it's a waste to remain inflexible.

As for not voting at all. there are many reasons that people don't vote. One of the most prevelent is LAZINESS. I had a fellow student tell me today "Man we gotta vote that bastard out of the White House", to which I responded with an empowering "RIGHT ON". Only for him to say a minute or two later that he wouldn't cast his vote if he got to the polls and found out he'd have to wait 2 hours. I was sickened.

Another common reason for not voting is because a person doesn't like either candidate. To that, my repsonse is quite simple. They are not equal. One is better than the other somewhere in your mind. Take 5 minutes to figure out which one that is and go cast the damn vote.

Contrary to belief, a lot of those people DO care, they just feel like our electoral system fails them and so they don't go out and vote. Well guess what, if all of those people would vote, they'd discover a whole new country waiting just around the corner and find that there votes really did make a difference.

I voted Nader, I wanted Kerry to win in this whole winner take all system we have, but I couldn't have myself vote for Kerry just becuase I hated Bush with a passion... I had to vote who I wanted to actually be in the office.

Much like this poll, the exit polls were far off.

Historically, the exit polls have been accurate, which is why they used to call the election with them, and be accurate. Recently the exit polls have become unreliable, and I wonder what changed. Is the population really 50/50, with equal numbers turning out in both a "selection of two identical candidates", and a radical vs a moderate scenario ? Has the polling method become different, do people lie more on the way out of the booth, or are they only polling young single mothers or some other nonrandom sampling of the population? I hope it is not something less pleasant.
There is no paper trail for 66% of the population.

I fear the revolution that started with the systematic disassembly of the education system in the 70s, has ended. Freedom has lost. The philosophy that used to hold the body of the constituion together now lives elsewhere. We are a radical christian nation. I feel much less safe today than I felt last week. What was a leader of accidental selection has been given a mandate by a majority of the population. The American people back the actions of the last four years.

11 states have voted to withhold fundamental rights from 5-15% of the population. Judges will be appointed. These are dark times for liberty, free thought, equality and justice.

Exit polls were wrong last time, and they were even worse this time. Some type of tampering or intentional bias must have been worked in.

If you really like having a secret ballot, you would tell a pollster to fuck off.

I wonder what would turn up if they studied the type of voter that would tell an exit-poller who they voted for. Who knows.

Why do networks pay for this garbage? Maybe the pollsters just sat around drinking beer at home, and had the computer randomly generate stats.

Loosen up Tsiang. Just because gay-marriage isn't allowed doesn't mean "dark times for liberty....."

Anyways, a single judge someplace will make a ruling making the free thought of 11 states moot.

All those voters in 11 states will be told "No", by one man. Isn't liberty great?

Thanks Zach. I'm obsessed with international politics and history. Probably the Cold War is my strongest knowledge - but I like to know as much as I can about everywhere in the world. It's a pity this forum has such a high portion of Americans because there are lots of other interesting things going on around the world. Not only are there elections happening all the time but there is heaps of other stuff going on. There's just been a big economic forum between Africa and Asia. Last month the Israeli army killed more people than it had in a month since 2002. The Sudan conflict is still going on - I find the world to be a very interesting place. I think I'm probably more obsessed with politics than I am with footbag!

I wouldn't give up too much hope for humanity - the world has had bad leaders and times of great upheaval and ignorance before and has come out of it okish. Maybe we are in for a long period of "dark times" but if I didn't think things would get better I would probably do something stupid.

There's nothing wrong with political obsessions. Politics are more important than sports.
Of course being involved in a sport is more than just watching a ballgame, for example.

I saw that the Sudanese army has surrounded some refugee camps, and aid workers cant get in. Will they all be starved?

Keep us apprised of the International stuff, Jeremy, because I, like you, get sick of seeing the meaningless Scott Peterson trial on T.V. news.
